Title: GeoGuessr
Post by: jwhouk on 23 May 2013, 05:56
Slightly inspired by an xkcd strip (namely, this one (http://xkcd.com/1214/)):

GeoGuessr (http://geoguessr.com/) is a web-based "game" where you try to figure out from Google Street View where in the world you are, and you get a score based on how "close" you are.

Example: 22,958 points (results here (http://www.geoguessr.com/?v=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)).

After reading that xkcd strip a few days ago I took a look at geoguessr myself.

It's pretty cool, but so far I haven't been able to score more than 12k points. I'm terrible at this. :)

this thing's actually quite a bit of fun for someone like me who's into travel.

first try got me 7389. i saw a sign for the 'new england highway' & assumed i must be in the north eastern US. turns out that austrailia also has a new england.

it's interesting how you end up looking at little things like the color of the license plates on some turns. i expect you'd get a lot better at this with practice.

13043 points.

But only because the thing dropped me next to the Harlinger vis handel.

Other than that ... I swapped Africa for Australia. Oops.

14858.

In every round I had two thoughts as to where it was, and one was fairly close but I chose the other.

(Later) It dropped me in a town I know, not so far from here, and I put the marker less than a mile out, for 6,500 points.  Still got only 8,000-odd points for the round...

I've only played this back when it only consisted of a function that drops you in a random street view spot in the world, but back then I noticed that the vast majority of the world isn't on street view. You can tell which countries and areas are mapped by zooming out completely and dragging the orange guy over the map. Germany seems to have forbidden Google from mapping everything but the largest cities. I'd wager that 90% of the time you'll find yourself in the US, western Europe or Australia.

Well, I got 2379 in the first game... It didn't help I was picking Australia and it ended up Canada, or picking Florida and ending up with Oklahoma.

The second game decided to be a little sadistic gimp. Third place and I know exactly where it was, my ex's hometown. Got 13853 in that game.   :-\

The best one-guess value I've gotten is a 6k-something.

Just got 26948pts.
Its actually a lot easier if you find a landmark or a signpost. I lucked out in one instance because I was put right next to the statue of Valery Chkalov in Nizhny Novgorod. From the look of the game, you are never put that far away from a town or something similar, so it becomes a case of looking for a shop (you can usually guess the language) or a school, which should hopefully have a flag. Even better if you can look for a signpost or a "Welcome to X" sign.

I'll be honest - multiple tabs, with one on the game, one on Google and one on Google Maps. Even then, I screw up (especially when I get ones that have me in a country using Cyrillic on their signs).

I think I did really well in scouting out the Muroto area in eastern Shikoku, Japan, based on coastal shape. The one over in Sweden I just got from "Oh, there's those two kinds of trees and there's water over there", but turned out it was over in Gotland (so across the water on the island). The American stuff were random guesses based on pretty much "..I guess it's kinda both light brown and green in this area.. or something?".

Cheating helps nothing if you're dropped in the middle of an arid desert on a straight road without anything around for miles, as it turns out. You've got four continents to be wrong in, then.
Title: Re: GeoGuessr
Post by: cesium133 on 24 May 2013, 08:36
Generally the arid desert / straight road / nothing for miles places tend to be Australia. Plus you can use the lines on the road to narrow it down in cases where there aren't other clues: white dashed lines in the center usually mean you're in Australia or Europe. Double yellow lines in the center mean you're in the U.S., Canada, Brazil, or maybe Mexico. Single yellow line in the center usually means you're in Mexico.

edit -- another way you can narrow down locations is just by knowing things about where Google Maps has Street View, and when the pictures were taken. If you see a picture with really bad image quality, chances are you're in the U.S., because Google was using lower-resolution cameras when they started out. The challenge there, though, is that with the lower resolution, signs are unreadable.
Title: Re: GeoGuessr
Post by: jwhouk on 24 May 2013, 11:07
And Google doesn't update the street view much.

Hell, a year or so ago, I saw a Street View car on the freeway near my apartment, and inadvertently sooted it (had bad boost control on my diesel car). Still hasn't updated (the current image is from 2007), although maybe me sooting it ruined the image. :P

Got within 2 meters of one place.

By the way: you can post a "challenge" link to have someone try and beat your score. After you've tried to solve five locations, it gives you two links - one that gives you the answers and your guesses, and another that allows the challenges. The URL's are ridiculously long in both cases, but it's neat either way.

Google definitely helps, but it can be a pain at times - especially when you're talking about Cyrillic-alphabet language areas. I've flat-out given up a few times in Asian countries.

There is a caveat with doing that, though - sometimes you can overwork Flash to the point where it crashes your browser if you're not careful.

Man, I thought I was doing well when I got over 9,000 points that one time. v.v

I've got a pretty good handle on what different languages look like, so I can almost always end up in the right country. The "almost" comes in there's just a dirt road. I seem to get Alaska and Scandinavian countries a lot, and the forest roads look very similar.

I did one without Google or any other webpage assistance. Still got a score of 21,850, and that was even after throwing my hands up on the first one... because of the placement of the street view. It was pure EVIL. (Google "-18.904797, 142.327567" and take a look around.)

There were a couple of easy ones in the group, and a third one that I only knew because I'm too much of a Canadiaphile.

What exactly is the problem with those? That you cannot just type them into Google because you need to look up invividual letters and paste every single one? If that's the problem, you click the letters on http://translit.ru, then copy and paste the resulting string.

In the game I just played, I noticed the Google Street View wagon in Brazil was violating multiple traffic laws (including passing cars on a double-yellow line on a blind turn) and apparently going significantly faster than all the traffic around it...

edit -- managed to hit a spot exactly (0 meters away). Got 6479 points.

edit2 -- the challenge link for that game (http://geoguessr.com/?s=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%3D%3D). I got screwed up in Australia. Think that's the most I've ever been off from a spot (a good 1,200 km).

Getting better at my Cyrillic, though.

yeah,  australia's starting to piss me off. what with it's long stretches of unmarked road through the deserts.

i think what the game needs is some way to jump up or down the road a few miles at a time, that way you could at least make your way to a town of something.

I actually like the way it is. I think it makes the "you are abducted by the CIA and dropped off in the middle of nowhere" feeling* more realistic.

Yeah, that's the general vibe of the game.

"You are now in the middle of nowhere. You have no GPS; just a general map of the earth. You will not be allowed to know where you are until you have made a guess. For every guess you make, you will be awarded an amount of money, based upon how accurate your guess was. You will not get the money until after you have made five 'trips'."

I was just landed on an absolutely nondescript road somewhere... except that one of those cars (http://www.mercedes-benz.com.br/Interna.aspx?categoria=90&conteudo=11500) was right behind me.  :-D

Yay for advertising!

Edit: and you know what? The car passed the Google Street View car at some point, and during one frame, it's license plate was unblurred.  I found out that I was in Sao Paulo (the state). From that car alone.

I understand that there is a slightly-older game that has a similar premise, except you just have to type the name of the city. That game is named "Pursued" - and it has a time limit.

Personally, I prefer Geoguessr, because you can take as long as you want or as quickly as you want.

I saw this game (http://www.locatestreet.com/) linked on another forum. It's similar to geoguessr, except it's a bit more restrictive about moving around, and more importantly it allows you to limit the locations to one region.

edit -- just had a serious derp moment. I told it to give me locations in Allegany County, Maryland. It gave me Street View images of my mom's house (which I'm currently sitting in). I asked for a hint.  :psyduck:

It's gotten a bit harder to guess some places, and the game's GPS isn't quite dead-on in some spots. Best I've been able to get lately is in the 27k range - and that was with a lot of help and no Japan/Taiwan or Russian locales.
