Title: Steam summer sale and trading cards
Post by: LTK on 11 Jul 2013, 12:47
As of today, the Steam Summer Sale has kicked off, and in addition to the usual fare of a lot of games for not a lot of money, they've introduced a little meta-game to the service in the form of trading cards (http://steamcommunity.com/tradingcards/faq/).

Basically, if you are playing a game through Steam you have a chance of receiving a trading card. You can sell these for steam wallet credit through the market, essentially turning your game time into store credit. You don't even need to play it, leaving it idling in the background is enough. That's where the story ends for those of us who are only interested in free (pretend) money.

(click to show/hide)

So far I've gained about €10 in Steam bucks that I can put towards new games, and exhausting all of my games for card drops took about three days, during which I had them running in the background. Not too shabby, if you ask me.

So, anything you'd like to get from this sale? Remember that if there's something you're planning on buying, don't get it until it shows up in a daily deal or a flash sale, and get it on the last day otherwise.

interesting!  I'll have to log into steam and take a look. Glad Bioshock: Infinite is on sale, would love to give it a whirl!

Bioshock: Infinite is actually cheaper on greenmangaming.com if you apply the coupon GMG20-F202F-UI40F. ;)

Bought DragonAge Origins ultimate edition. Either it'll run on my laptop (that's a big fat maybe) or it'll run on one of these desktop PCs i'm rebuilding (more likely). Either way i get to be reunited with my dear morrigan

Today is a good day. The new Civ V addon was released and from what I can tell so far, it is awesome. Then Civ V goes on Sale and I can get the Gold Edition Upgrade for a mere 2,50€, so now I have all DLCs too!

*drags self out of Steam Market* fucking...auction house...jitters...

On a side note, I've managed to make a little money! Not any *actual* numbers, mind, I'm playing for pennies here, but it does remind me of some of the occasional fun times during the Warcraft years.

Post by: LTK on 12 Jul 2013, 07:19
I'm getting flashbacks to Neopets. Resellers, price sniping, artificial inflation, I'm seeing every trick in the book.

I'm not going to bother with selling any cards other than my own. I bought a mystery card yesterday and I tried to sell it when it turned into a summer getaway card, but the market was being overloaded with them so every time I mananged to get mine listed, the price had already gone down too far to be competitive. Now it's only worth a third of what I paid for it. Pity, but it's not real money anyway.

I'm starting to wonder what could motivate someone to actually consume the trading cards in order to craft badges when the alternative is just selling them for store credit. I suppose you could gamble on getting those booster packs if you craft enough badges to increase your Steam level, then sell those, but that doesn't really get you a reliable return of investment.

I'll take it! So far I've only been playing a pirated version but I'd love to have it for reals. Want to trade anything for it?

I bought all the Just Cause 2 DLC for less than €2. I normally wouldn't touch DLC as insubstantial as an extra gun or an extra car, but since it's cheap and it doesn't cost me anything I figure why not.

Just Cause 2 by itself is also totally worth getting at that price. It's fantastic if you treat it as a cheesy action movie simulator.

I'm considering buying Anno 2070... I played a lot of Anno 1602 back in college, but I haven't played any of the sequels.
Having slept on the decision, the cheap side of me took over and I decided not to buy a $25 game that I don't know for certain will work with my graphics card and has a three-machine activation limit...

RPG Maker VX Ace any good?
Title: Re: Steam summer sale and trading cards

Haven't used RPG maker since RPG Maker 2000 and xp, so I can't say for sure. That being said, if putting together an RPG even though you know nothing about programming, art or sound sounds like fun, then RPG Maker is the way to go. It's a great tool.

You can start the game and then alt-tab back to Steam and manually start the downloads again. That's a bit stupid, yes, but it does work.
Title: Re: Steam summer sale and trading cards

Of the games I bought, I've mainly been messing around with the Just Cause 2 DLC. The other games require dedicating at least an afternoon or evening to them, and I have way too much work to do to allow myself that.

I also dipped in a game of UT2004. Holy shit I suck at this game now.

As for the sale, the only thing I really, really want to see discounted now is Zeno Clash II. Everything else can wait.

This is the reason that I have owned Civ V for like a year but never played more than 2 games of it. I always want to but then I'm like "wait, do I have 6 hours?"

If you use their browser-based interface (http://store.steampowered.com/) you can.

On another note, I'm pretty happy to see Prison Architect get some exposure in this sale. Introversion Software is another little company I've been a fan of for some time (for all their real problems, Uplink and Darwinia are still pretty neat), and though this isn't the project of theirs I wanted right away, PA does look like they've got it coming along very nicely.

When I use Steam in the browser it asks me to login almost every freaking time, which makes it a lot less convenient. It is so, so much faster than the client, though.

Zeno Clash 2 for 50% off in a flash sale! That's the one thing I really wanted from this sale. Plus, I got someone to split a two-pack with me, so it was almost 75% less. Now I can stop buying things.

My wishlist keeps growing. :( I managed to pick up Sim City 4 and Scribblenauts on the starting capital of cards from games I already have and obsessive market playing. Those and the Spiderweb Humble pack are more than enough additions for me, in addition to when I get the stupid paycard money transferred to my bank and get you back later this week for Gunpoint, LTK.

EDIT: Of course now I also want Zeno 1 and 2, because I played a ZC2 demo a long time ago and thought it was just too weird and interesting not to want.

Oh god, they've given developers the ability to connect in-game rewards to the badges you get from collecting trading cards. This can only end badly.

Hopefully they'll limit it to small things like a new skin or something else that at the end of the day would have otherwise been put up as quick cash grab DLC that's easy for most people to ignore. Anything bigger will indeed end poorly and possibly ruin a really good idea.
