Hmmm...I don't think I've seen him in anything, but I'm glad they picked someone a bit older this time. (Although part of me was really hoping for Idris Elba, even though I knew they wouldn't pick him.) Can't wait to see how it turns out!

Isn't he still making Luther? But yeah, Idris Elba'd have been awesome. STRINGER BELL!

Also, how is a casting decision a spoiler? It's not like knowing who plays the Doctor gives any indication to plot :psyduck:

I would imagine it more for the people who hadn't heard yet, who are perhaps travelling and just checking in on their phones. Its more of a courtesy than anything else.

Nah. I fell in love with Tennant in his first appearance. :-D
I think I started loving Tennant as soon as he started talking. Whenever I watch one of his episodes I absolutely love his accent, and love the way he behaves. Smith was a bit too positive and clumsy at the same time.

my one quibble is that We've ALREADY seen this actor in the Dr.Who universe...
Timey Wimey, etc; but to reuse a face already placed on another character?
seems a bit ~ Lazy.
Title: Re: The 12th Doctor
Post by: ankhtahr on 05 Aug 2013, 13:47
Well, we already had this happen with a companion. Martha Jones' actress Freema Agyeman already appeared in the battle of Canary Wharf. IIRC it was explained with her being Martha's cousin.

They also had him and Karen Gillan in the Fires of Pompei

They've also done that with an actor playing The Doctor before. It's hardly unprecedented.

The Thick Of It YouTube parodies are going to be amazing. I've seen one beautiful one already ('an army of fuckin' robots'/'you need to detonate a fucking bomb, today').

Honestly, this casting has actually got me interested in Doctor Who for the first time since Tennant's second season.

Right with you Gareth, I've always watched Doctor Who from afar, but remember watching and enjoying Eccleston and most of Tennant - Matt Smith was fine but I never bothered to watch him, Capaldi will make things interesting.

As for Elba - I'm sure once he's done with Luther he'll be picked for something huge. He's already been suggested for the next Bond, now Doctor Who...there's a role with an all-white history that I'm sure he can pick up with grace.

Ecclestone is still my favourite Doctor because of his damaged, dark edge and cynicism. Tennant was a know-it-all cunt and Smith seems to be a socialist teenager who's had too many sweets.
Title: Re: The 12th Doctor
Post by: ankhtahr on 06 Aug 2013, 14:50
Eccleston was great, but sometimes he was pulled down too much by his deeds about the Daleks and the Time Lords.

I absolutely loved Tennant. Almost everything about him was great, though he could be a little bit too self confident. Well, in the end this hubris was what brought him to his downfall. Keyword:

I never really liked Smith. Partly that's not his fault, but Moffat's. I very much liked the style of the new series, brought in by Russell T. Davies. Moffat's style seems too polished to me at times. But even with that aside, Smith was always so hyper, but still so clumsy, especially in regard to humans.

I look forward to Capaldi. He seems a bit more dark, maybe a bit more "Eccleston-ian". It'd be good to have a doctor with a dash of cynicism again.

My list of favourite episodes features pretty much every Moffat episode, topped by Blink.  Thing is, there's one notable exception.  The Waters of Mars is at least equal to Blink, possibly better.  It's a difficult watch, though.

The best episodes are when the Doctor is the most human - Girl in the Fireplace, Waters of Mars, Beast Below...
Title: Re: The 12th Doctor

My favourites are The Impossible Planet (and The Satan Pit), Human Nature (and The Family of Blood), Girl in the Fireplace, and basically the whole third season. Martha Jones is definitely my favourite companion. She is not as dependant on the doctor as e.g. Rose, and I liked her from the moment she answered "Far as I'm concerned you've got to earn this title." when the Doctor introduced himself as "The Doctor".

Was Captain Jack a companion? (For that matter, was Mickey?)

Captain Jack travelled to the End of Time, as well as Boom Town/Bad Wolf/Parting of Ways.

Mickey travelled once or twice, he was in Girl in the Fireplace.  He's also one of the people the Tenth checked up on before he regenerated.

Recurring characters, yes, but companions?
Title: Re: The 12th Doctor

A Companion is basically someone who shares an adventure with the Doctor.

For example, Astrid Peth could be considered a Companion, despite the fact she was only in one Christmas Special.

Rory can go suck a dick. He annoyed the shit out of me. Male equivalent of the damsels they used to have on the show that can't even tie their shoes. Even Rory's dad was more awesome.

This is where I should admit that I didn't watch Doctor Who especially religiously during Rory's time on the show - i.e. I barely watched it. I've only ever seen him being useless in episodes, though.

I didn't see much of Clara yet (I've only watched the first eight episodes of the 7th season yet), but I think she's alright.

Also I realised how much I don't like the episodes of the sixth season when I was looking for an episode to rewatch while on the bus. I randomly skipped through almost all of them until I opened "The Doctor's Wife" and decided that that was an acceptable episode…

I found Amy more annoying than Rory.
Rory has some wonderful moments.
When he enters the Tardis for the first time (vampires of venice I think) and the doctors ready to be all smug in the face of human incomprehension and Rory's like, oh so yeah. Different dimension inside then? (I'm paraphrasing) When the doctor is surprised at Rory's lack of reaction, Rory explains he did his research and read up on science theory after their first encounter. How cool is that!

[edit, now with extra added quotage!]
The Doctor: It's a lot to take in, isn't it? Tiny box, huge room inside; what's that about? Let me explain...
Rory: It's another dimension.
The Doctor: It's basically another dimen- what?
Rory: After what happened with Prisoner Zero, I've been reading up on all the latest scientific theories. FTL travel, parallel universes.

And when he says "this isn't fair, you're turning me into you" when the doctor asks him to choose between young amy and old amy in 'The girl who waited.'

You forgot Rory's best moment:  "Would you like me to repeat the question?".  Doesn't sound like much on its own, but in context, very badass.
Title: Re: The 12th Doctor

I quite like Rory. I think he sticks up for himself and is a good contrast for Amy and the Doctor. (I like the companions who are more reserved about getting into trouble. Why? It's believable and not so over the top.) Also I really like the dynamic of there being two companions for more than an episode or two.

But by far my favorite companion is River Song. The whole backwards/forwards timelines of the two (I haven't finished season 6 yet) is really dynamic and interesting. I wish it was with David Tennant, but when she kissed Matt Smith for the first/last time, it was hilarious watching him squirm about. My second favorite is Capt. Jack, then Martha, Donna, Rose, Mickey. Rose was...ok? and I found Mickey really boring until he went to the other dimension. (I liked his and Martha's ending a lot.) I'm not quite sure how I rate Amy and Rory on that scale yet.

But I have heard rumors that there will be a special that will show the time war with the 8.5 Doctor. Half-human/half-time lord Tennant and I think Rose will be in it and it'll explain why The Doctor doesn't want to discuss the Time War that much and will cover exactly what he did during it. I think he's supposed to have some elements of both the 8th and 9th doctors, but I can't remember what. Has anyone heard about this?

It seems I have great things to look forward to :o I've just resumed watching the reboot--which I'd unintentionally abandoned way back when Eccleston played the Doctor--from series 6 and am LOVING it! I lured the wife in and soon thereafter Amy quickly established herself as one of our very few celebrity crushes <3 I'm also enjoying seeing Badger in an unusually likeable role :o

Capaldi not only acted in the show once, but he as a major character in Torchwood's series 3: Children of Men as the character "Frobisher"

If you are familiar with the old show, you will remember when Romana regenerated when Lala Ward took over the role. Her second form was a copy of a character from the preceeding serial meaning they can take their forms based on people they encounter from their lives.  The Sixth Doctor is another example of this, as Colin Baker was in the serial "Arc of Infinity" as Commander Maxil.
