Curse my sudden and inevitable betrayal! Muwahahaha. None of you saw this coming did you?

Any way, here's your thread, and your poll.

I just had to do one.

I get a kick out of when they show that movie these days on Comedy Central, and the entire song gets bleeped out because none of it is considered acceptable on American TV.

And about as dumb an argument as the Console+PC wars. Both Japanese dubbing (voice acting) with English subtitles and English dubbing have their pluses and minuses for an English speaking viewer, and that's about all that needs to be said.

I also find there's an age issue; the older mind - I'm not too embarrassed to say - is simply not as fast at some things as a younger one.  I prefer dubs (when available) because I can keep up, whereas with subs, although I can keep up with the reading, it can severely impact the attention given to the rest of the screen.  In some cases, watching can become really hard work (Bakemonogatari is the extreme example I know, though that one's probably hard work for anyone!).

I've just ordered a film from Australia, because their release has a dub; one US release has it, but is out of print, and I can't find a copy anywhere, and the UK release is subs-only.

Noodle Incident (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/NoodleIncident) ahoy! Subs vs. Dubs is obvious*, but I wouldn't have got the WoW reference.

For most cinema in languages I don't know, I prefer subs, but all the anime I own on DVD (Everything from the GITS universe (except Arise which I have not yet seen) and Planetes; I'm not a big fan) are English-dubbed, so... *shrug*

But they presumably have the Japanese audio and English subs as well?  Very few don't (in my collection, one very old DVD which is a straight copy from VHS, and one where the Japanese company enforced dub-only in their licence).  Presumably your player selects the English by default.

Subs vs. Dubs is a never ending battle. I watch a mix of both. There are some anime where the English dub is so atrocious I literally won't watch it except in Japanese. (Sailor Moon and Love Hina for some examples off the top of my head) Others have put as much effort and skill into their English voice cast as their Japanese voice cast and have a fantastic dub to show for it. (GITS, Hellsing Ultimate, Outlaw Star. Dragon Ball/DBZ) and every where else is middle ground. If I'm just vegging I'll probably watch the sub, if I'm painting or doing stuff in addition to watching the DVD or whatever I need a dub so I don't have to look up constantly. This goes for the more traditional foreign film I watch as well.

Re the strip: Ah! Marigold was so cute! and I want to work somewhere with sword fighting training!

No, that's WoW. If I'm not entirely mistaken, that was part of the Trailer for Burning Crusade, but I'm not sure. In either case, Illidan yells YOU ARE NOT PREPARED at you, at the end of the speech he gives when you encounter him on the roof of Black Temple. He then proceeded to bash the shit out of your raid.

She's still pretty consistent with Faye. Neither was ever supposed to be 'fat', just a bit chubby. The art just overdid it for a bit.

yeah, with an artist like Jeph who likes to evolve his art, the rule of thumb (IMO) should be if they've not appeared in a few weeks/strips/storylines, there's no need to read anything into a character's different appearance. If it's intentional then the other characters will comment on it and it'll be part of the storyline.

Sub vs Dub: The ultimate anime argument/flame war.

Um... what does that have to do with the title "Anime Trap"?

Or were you just referring to Marigold's shirt, instead of replying to the previous post by ysth?

I'm totally bewildered by the title, too.

Soooo Marigold lost quite a bit of weight?

She looks a little skinny in the first panel, but I think it's mostly because he cuts off her upper half at the waist. She looks pretty normal to me in the second panel, where you can see her hips.

She's never been that heavy, just has a poor self-image.  Also she's curvy, and how she looks depends some on the angle as well.  And she's always been pretty short - it's just that Dale's really tall when he doesn't slump.

He weight may well yoyo some too, depending on how often she remembers to eat during a raid / how much junk food she mindlessly devours during a raid.

Then again, Bellisario's Maxim (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BellisariosMaxim) applies.

Quote from: Jeph's Tumblr
It is really weird and kind of offputting to me how obsessive some people get about Faye’s (and it’s always Faye) figure. My art naturally varies from strip to strip, if she looks “skinnier” or something it’s just how I happened to draw her that day.

With Faye working out and reducing the booze it would have been plausible that she was being drawn skinnier for a reason, but that wasn't it.

If Momo is cooking for Marigold, Marigold may be in better shape.

You can never truly be prepared for this.

As for the Sub v Dub debate, I can take either depending on my general mood, though I will admit it's more work to follow in Sub mode.  I do have some issues with Dubbing, and sometimes it makes me cringe when I hear/see it in the original Japanese with Subtitles.

Then again, some things just sound ..... better in the original.

I didn't spend masses of free time studying Japanese to watch stinkin' dubs.
(Though I must admit modern dubs have greatly improved.)
The great thing about subs is I can now understand occasional bits of dialog.
It's a wonderful feeling when the little light bulb goes on. (Yatta! Wakatta!)

I can't stand subbing, because Japanese is completely different from tonal cues, and I can't make any sense of the dialogue because it's not spoken in a fashion that communicates meaning that matches the subbed words.  The only anime I watch subbed is Bible Black, because the dub of that is almost legendarily awful.

In totally unrelated news, was I the only one who thought that Panel 1 was Hannelore opening up to Marigold about "lady issues"?  This is probably very wrong-headed of me, but it was all I could think of with that context (and it's now driving me nuts to not be able to come up with a better idea).

I'll concur with this even with my admitted enjoyment of a good dub. It's fun to be able to pick out tonal cues (like the poster below you mentioned) and words/dialogue. I need to get back on the pony and reteach myself what I forgot after visiting Tokyo this summer. I want to try to go back possibly this spring so I can catch the cherry blossom season while my brother's still stationed there.

Also this comic is win. Over joyed Hanners is over joyed.

Also everyone who picked the Hanners/Emily will do something surreal option may award themselves on e-cookie.

"I think my face is stuck like this", as distorted by being spoken through an immobile smiling face. The words in the bubble are not an English sentence taken literally, but are phonetic representations of what she would sound like.

Omigod, you're totally right. That is exactly the strip I was thinking of, and one of the other characters in that comic (Thomas, I think) had made the same remark about sideburns in an earlier strip -- that he was bringing them back. I can't believe I mixed up QC and Between Failures. Apologies for the confusion; my bad.

Were this any other story, I'd say we should anticipate a few more days/weeks of unacceptable behavior followed by the relevatory experience then the redemption/rehabilitation of the character.

The online discussion will constantly veer toward demonization of one character or another, with no thought toward Jeph's admonition that no one in the comic is ever entirely right or entirely wrong, but that is simply noise from the balcony.

Of course, Jeph never does anything standard-issue, so I'll just watch. Popcorn, anyone? (I'm not sharing my Junior Mints).

This seems like pretty typical Faye to me, just indulging in her favorite pastime of dishing out sass.  The "listen, fucko" bit would've been harsh except that she immediately followed it up with the equivalent of a "haha, gotcha!"  She's just yanking his chain.

I love Dale as straight man.  His earnest-and-bewildered expressions are very comical, and at the same time it's obvious that he's not too bothered and we don't have to cringe for him.

Yeah, but I'm still waiting for a "DAAAAAAAAAAANG" from him about... something... anything!

I'm still waiting for the part where they test whether he's able to thwart Sven's attempts at flirting.  I mean that is actually a formal part of the training that EVERY non-Dora CoD employee has to go through, right?

Perhaps Raven will stand in for Sven. Of course, there's a question of power dynamics here into which the more, uh, sociopolitically oriented forumites might enthusiastically jump, namely: Is it more offensive/oppressive/what have you for a male to flirt with a female than vice versa?

I like that the slurp sound effect looks like it is written on the board in the first panel.

OH HO HO! It's funny because Faye is apathetic to customers!

(But really though, three strips in a row with that punchline. We get it Jeph.)

That's not an invalid criticism, but since you're new I should point out that you should take care not to seem like you're telling Jeph how to write his comic. That's a big no here.

I don't think that line's been crossed, really.  There's a distinct difference between complaining about the ride, and backseat driving.

Nor do I, but I wanted him to be aware of the line.

To me it actually also seems that Faye is meaner than usual - at least looking at her later development, not at the earliest comic. So I guess her increased power might be getting to her head a bit. But I also really expect Dale to stand up to that at some point.
Anyway, I like the new CoD arc(s), just like old times!
And yeah, the resisting to flirtation part would be a nice gag. I imagine Dale would ace it, given his past work experience, no matter whether the flirting comes from a girl or a guy.

Given Dale's job as a pizza delivery (and the way some people apparently tried to tip him), he probably wouldn't have a hard time passing the test.

Oh, I had totally forgotten that comic! But yeah, it shows that Dale has had to defend against much more than just flirting.

Looking at that now, I notice he never actually voiced objection, and he did come into the apartment between panels, so there's no evidence he passed and he may in fact have failed. Relief at it not being the case isn't enough.

relief indicated that, had it been offered, he would have had to refuse.

Or at least think about it...

As it was, he still had no idea what she was offering!

It seems highly likely that he would have refused, but less likely that he would have refused with COD-worthy sarcasm.  He's admitted that he's scared of talking to girls, (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2512) so he might have ended up floundering his way out of that situation.

I wouldn't assume that his taking Hanners's words as suggestive means he's actually been offered sexual favors as a delivery tip.  He could just as easily have gotten the idea from pr0n.  Heck, you don't even have to have ever seen any pr0n about pizza delivery boys to know that that's a theme.  (Tho, being a pizza delivery boy, he probably would have made a point of looking up some of that stuff...)

I am living proof of the statement that you don't have to have seen the relevant porn for the expectation.

What can I say. My porn is usually either classier or devoid of story. Although one muses whether pornography involving two or more people in love with each other does not, in fact, have a beautiful story to tell.

Yeah, I've never watched it either--I think I first learned of the theme from this xkcd (http://xkcd.com/778/).  Which Dale may have read too--we know from Marigold's shirt that there's xkcd in the QC universe.
