I chose #4, but mostly because I wish for it personally, and not so much that I think it's what'll actually happen.

I am somewhat expecting Angus to not get the spot, hard to say why.  I guess I'm just uncertain and nothing else, but I always expect the worst of situations for some reason...

A whole week of buildup, and then he shows up at her apartment - looking like he went into the ring with the Undertaker.

"I was number 9,723 to audition. Three seconds in, my nose started to itch. I tried to be suave and make it look like I wasn't trying to itch my nose."

"And that's why you have a patch over your eye?"

"No, that's from when I pitched forward and face-planted onto the judging panel's table."

"I was wondering what the sling was for."

"Yeah. So. They told me, 'Don't call us, we'll call you.' Unfortunately, I lost my cell phone on the train back up here, so I'd have no idea if they liked me, anyways."

(Meanwhile, the interior of a train car - "BRRRRRRING!")

I have to compliment Jeph on the art. Especially the composition. So many strip comics avoid showing people from the waist down. Here's a bunch of panels where people are standing in full view. Nice work. I hope this is a continuing consequence of the expanded size of the comic.

There is something very strange going on with Dora's right foot in the first panel. Either she has mismatched feet, or she's wearing a biker boot several sizes larger on the right than the left. Jeph still draws better feet than Rob Liefield, even on a bad day.

A friend is a friend, and a boss is a boss. They should never be mixed. A boss should never be your friend outside of work, even if you are on friendly terms while at work. Conflicts are bound to occur if you do not follow this rule. Faye is trying to be schizophrenic about this, but it is not going to work.

Faye and Hanners obviously violate the boss/friends rule. Other employees at CoD are not part of Dora's inner circle of friends (even if she occasionally meets them outside of work because they have common friends).

Jeph has previously touched this theme, when Dora hired Hanners (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1707).

Many comics are only three strips a week; one well-regarded one is a dozen or less strips a year.  Why then do you feel the need to berate someone who's been so comparatively productive for over ten years now for being unwell?  What's your excuse?

Ryan Sohmer is the writer for Looking For Group (lfgcomic.com).

Not to mention, Jeph doesn't run a strip buffer, and everyone needs a day or so off now and again.  As mentioned in the YB thread, it's either this, or nothing, and I'd rather have a ranty little bird (although an appearance by Sweet Tits Harriet wouldn't bother me at all.

I've read the comic for years, but never felt compelled to register/post until Xthform's post.  I thought it was going to have a sarcastic twist at the end, but nope - ended up being nothing more than a rant.

As mentioned above, we're guests, and Jeph's history/track record speaks for itself - he rarely misses a day.  Sometimes life gets in the way, and I'd rather he take a day or two when he needs it to reset, clear things up, and be ready to attack the next one fresh and ready to roll.

That sense of entitlement to something that is provided for free out of the goodness of the artist's heart is part of what makes creating any kind of art so unrewarding at times.

Considering the shit he's been through, it's amazing that he's kept this up for so long and is still going strong. Let the dude have a night off if he needs it.

Yep, I know anxiety issues, although they are probably very different from Jeph's, and because of that I have the greatest respect for Jeph for not completely skipping the day. Taking a day off can really be a necessity when you're struggling with stuff like this. So, I'm happy about the YB strip, while hoping that the day off helps Jeph with his problems.

I generally don't love the yelling bird strips.  But I've never had any sort of problem with them.  As far as I'm concerned, Jeph's output is downright remarkable, particularly given the quantity and quality of art in his strips.  Everyone deserves time off every now and then, even if they aren't going through personal stuff.  I mean, seriously, compare it with Darby Conley on the paper strip side of things.

That said, I actually quite liked this YB strip.  For some reason, it really struck my funny bone.

I think it is time for a Mother's conference. Just imagine what Veronica Vance and Hannermom (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=913) might have to talk about. Faye's mother (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=585), while more timid, could also add some useful insights.

But I dont even know half the curses Yelling Bird uses ...
You're posting on the Internet, a forum for Porn (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5z5U_xd8EU); there has to be at least ONE site on the Internet for swear words and sexual references you can pull up for references. Or just make them up!!
I was talking about the fact that I am not a native english speaker and the vocabulary used there is simply completely alien to me.

Basically, the net effect of Yelling Bird is to combine expletives with more common, everyday words
(click to show/hide)
to make profanity worse than normal. Or, simply put, making swearwords up to be as dreadful as possible.

On comic: Uh oh, indeed. Mrs Reed must have sensed something was wrong...

Now I wonder why she's here?  I am anxious to see if he drops a  "Marten's moving back to California" bombshell.

Should you ever meet a woman from the US South, be careful not to mistake polite for "timid".

Marten loves his mother, but she tends to embarass (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1827) him all the time. Also, she is very active in trying to get him hooked up (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2379) with some girl. I guess this is common for most mothers, but VV might be a bit over the top.

The combination of his mother's unexpected presence, Pintsize's prophecy (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2672), and the reality of Faye's huge boobs covered in cake batter (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2679) is probably too much for him. But if he really wants to change some shit, this could be good, because something is bound to happen.

Well, I would guess VV knows how to pick locks. Part of her job. A bondage performance might involve throwing away the keys, but sooner or later the customer wants to get loose (and VV wants her payment).

On the other hand, Pintsize might just have let her in (try to figure out how he can reach the doorknob). I guess he is very interested in VV's choice of career. They may have had an interesting discussion before Faye and Hanners arrived. VV may also have donated a few terabytes of porn to Pintsize's already substantial collection.

The timeline might be just a minute or two from Pintsize utters the phrase "huge boobs covered in cake batter" (just after Faye has the accident), thereby waking Marten, and Marten walks out of his room (seeing his mother and Faye's cake-battered boobs). Thus, Pintsize might not be a prophet after all.

The overall timeline is linear, but parallel events in time requires some time jumps. There are a few hours elapsing between Marten going to bed and Pintsize waking him up in strip 2672 (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2672). In the meantime, Faye has had a bad day at work, Marten's mom has arrived, and Faye has had some bourbon and cake-battered her boobs.

But I agree that Pintsize might be partly responsible for cake-battering Faye's boobs.

Not really, 2672 is Marten just going to bed and Pintsize whispering that to him as he drifted off to sleep (which probably causes him to dream of that). Soon after that, Faye goes to work. She then has a bad day at work. She then returns home to find Marmom there, and then Marten wakes up and sees her. All linear.

So, Jim (it's Jim, right?) was quite a bit older than Dora, but wouldn't he be quite a bit younger than Veronica?

Marten loves his mother, but she tends to embarass (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1827) him all the time. Also, she is very active in trying to get him hooked up (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2379) with some girl. I guess this is common for most mothers, but VV might be a bit over the top.
What ? My mother never tried anything like that ...

The problem is that Marten's mom does try things like this. And Marten doesn't have the stones to tell her to stop - not in a way that she'll listen to, anyway. And if she and Jim hit it off, she'll have good reason to move to the same coast Marten is in, and the same town as well.

Marten may have to move again to get away from her over-mothering ways. Or gather the courage to tell her to back up off him.

I think Jim was in his early 40's.  If Marten is mid-20's, his mom could easily be 50-ish, or even late 40's.  A difference of, say, 6 or 8 years isn't too significant for folks their age.

I did not realize Marten was so much shorter than his mom. He seems like an anomoly, genetics-wise. I would expect him to be taller, especially after seeing his parents' heights in this strip (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2399).

One word: heels.

those'd have to be some pretty damn serious heels. she looks like she's got a good 6 inches over him.

Ugh...we're probably going to be subjected to at least two weeks of Marten's mom.

I would be far less indisposed to the character if she hadn't undergone such a drastic personality shift between #461 and #1820. The Embarrassing Parent is an old trope, and a mid-life crisis can cause some personality shifts...but seriously, it's like two different people.

Which is too bad, because I really liked her back in her initial visit...but everything since has been like nails on a chalkboard.

Grandchildren urges seem to have hit her in the meantime, and hit hard.

All Samantha has to do is ask what her dad's new friend does for a living, or Google her name, for awkwardness to ensue.

Late on the topic and all but Yelling birds "creative us of language" is of the Pick from column A and from column B variety, where A is a small fixed list and B is whatever words came to mind at the time and even then they are pretty tame.

I personally laud the invective from Grrl Power's protagonist Halo aka Sydney Scoville, Jr., as truly being creative in any sense or nonsense meaning of the word creative, all while using mostly words from the English language.

Trying to imagine how that went:
"Hi, I'm the mother of the ex-boyfriend of the woman with whom you're in a business arrangement, but dated once and decided to remain friends with? Anyway, his boss thought we might make a good couple? What do I do? Well ... "

Or maybe it just started as a phone order* for crullers or eclairs and she just worked her way up to that.

*It could happen. A TV host in California called up a pizza place in his Ohio hometown to have some pies flown out. I imagine they needed a reheat once they arrived.

I mean, sure, if you say it out loud. But that's not why they use it. X is a substitute for the Greek letter Chi, which is the first letter in the Greek Χριστός, which means "anointed" and is where "Christ" comes from. Okay, seriously, I can enjoy a bout of hating on Veronica and her embarrassing actions as much as anybody, but you're kind of pushing the line between comic canon and your own personal fanon here.

Actually, there was the fact of her embarassing him when he was out. There was her dragging him around, showing embarassing pictures to his friends. Also, when he finally called her out on her behavior she shouted him down, made him apologize to her and apparently his friends thought this was fine, or at least said nothing to her about it. This isn't personal fanon, this is me pointing out what she did.

In case you need a reminder, was how much worse she made his misery after Dora dumped him.

As opposed to him moping and slamming an entire bottle of hooch before her visit.

One of these days, I'll figure out how to do that thing where my text links to whatever I wanted to link to.

This isn't personal fanon, this is me pointing out what she did.
yeah, parents sure can be embarrassing and inconvenient.

I took a lot of that as being jokey - it's hard to tell from text but the way that Marten acts when his mum leaves seems to me to suggest that they're comfortable around each other. My mum and I jokingly tease each other a lot and if you wrote it down it'd look like genuine fighting.
