One could ask whether she should really tell a 12 year old what she actually does...

Onc could, and the rest of us could go on about it.

Things to bear in mind however:

a.  Fictional dominatrix;
b.  Fictional child;
c.  Fictional situation;
d.  We're not the author.

Had the situation been real and involved me in some way, then my opinion on the right way to handle telling Sam what VV does for a living would have some bearing, but for now I want to see where this arc takes us - or Faye's bath - whichever comes first.

Well, not necessarily if Veronica is planning on stopping. At least, not until Sam is old enough to actually be interested and ask of her own accord. I don't think it's harmful to tell her at this age, though. Knowing about sex isn't harmful; the attitude that children should not know about sex is pretty harmful.

What I'm confused about is Sam's word choice. Unless she actually knows the context of said spankings (which I have my doubts...), I don't understand how the simple act on its own is "gross."

Unless words like "eww" and "gross" are slang for "cool" and "awesome" for her... which they very well might be.

I think it's deliberately chosen that way to show that Sam is reacting to VV as she reacted to Faye--that is, as almost a playmate rather than as a stepmom. VV would appear to have been successful at disarming the shyness... though, we'll see what happens in the next comic.

Wow! Kids grow fast!  Sam grew a few inches between panels 1 and 2!

I mean, look at it; in panel 1, the top of Sam's heard just about reaches Veronica's chin.

Panel 2, BAM, the top of Sam's head is as the level of Veronica's nose. :D

But then again, for all I know, someone will ask Sam tomorrow why she decided to get up on a box. :D

Humor disclaimer, love the comic. :D Now I just need 18 spare bucks to get book 4. :D

Sam and Veronica together are seriously cracking me up.  I don't care if it's perfect realism or not, it's hilarious.

Gross probably means gross...but yeah, that's a positive thing to her.
I think you nailed it.  If Veronica had said, "I work in the sewers, with poop!" Sam probably would've had the exact same reaction.

What I'm confused about is Sam's word choice. Unless she actually knows the context of said spankings (which I have my doubts...), I don't understand how the simple act on its own is "gross."
She probably has a very, very vague awareness of the context.  Enough BDSM makes its way into mainstream media and marketing in the form of non-explicit hints that a 12-year-old might well have just enough awareness to say "gross!" without really understanding.

All I know, I learned from comics ...

When Sam goes "gross", she reminds me of Calvin.

When she delights in biology, I think of Paige Fox, and how she enjoyed dissecting frogs.  ("Yesss.  The little kidneys ...")

And when amongst her father and prospective step family, it's (prospectively) like ... One Big Happy!

True. Sam is at least the right age for puberty, and will probably soon be curious in sex and/or sexuality. Learning about it in a healthy environment would help her make healthy and safe decisions when the time comes (Jim would probably hope that day does not arrive for another 10-50 years or so). In the case of Veronica's profession... well, that talk probably won't happen unless the Internet answers that question for her.

On comic: Sam looks kind of pleased about things after telling Marten that, I think

And that's how Marten got a little sister.
Whenever Veronica and Jim want a little time by themselves, they will from now on ask Marten to be the babysitter. Sam wouldn't mind, as she will get to hang out with Faye in their apartment. Pintsize is about to be dissected soon.

Sam will tell Marten he is too wimpy, and try to toughen him up. He might be dragged along to the frog pond. We might also see more Sam/Momo/Hannelore interactions.

I guess the disturbing glee of dissecting is the most discerning characteristic of a biologist. Disturbing, indeed. Sam will need to practice for her future career, so I guess a dissecting lab in the Faye/Marten apartment is coming up next. Hannelore will go catatonic when she comes to visit. Yes, seems like Jeph applied a quick fix. Probably after reading mustang6172's comment.

I think Sam and Marten will get along fine. Sam will be the boss. But Marten is used to being submissive, so that is OK.

Regarding Marten and Jim meeting previously: Jim works unrelenting shifts at ungodly hours (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2696), so I guess he mostly leaves the daytime work at the Secret Bakery to his employees. Still, he is probably present sometimes during the day.

Puberty is marked by rapid growth. Also, is Sam still 12? How long has it been since her introduction/since her age was last stated explicitly?

In the last frame she looks marginally taller than in the second-to-last. It might not be intentional, but I imagine her standing on her toes to better drive the point home to her soon-to-be-stepbrother.

Either Sam is really tall for a 12-year-old, or Marten is really short. Or she's sitting on Faye's shoulders, and Faye's sitting on the floor. Maybe it's an intentional thing to fit Sam into the frame better, or something.

I was actually full-grown before I hit twelve--I maxed out my height in fifth grade at age 11 and never grew any taller (wider, on the other hand...). Granted, I'm only 5'0"... but I do know I wasn't the tallest girl in my fifth grade class. I had friends who still managed to be at least a head taller than me. Between the earliest puberty age (9, usually) through the end of high school, it's pretty tough to establish a "normal" height for a kid because they all hit that/those major growth spurt(s) at different points and different intensities.

I'm also certain that if Marten tries to muscle his way into the front seat that Sam'll be able to get him out.

Meh.
How often are they going to go somewhere together in a car as a family, anyway?
Marten's supposed to be all grown up and living his own life now.
It's easy for him to play along with Sam and acquiesce to something that seems  important to her, but it isn't really going to be much of an issue.

I think I actually prefer sitting in the back, all other things being equal (as in, providing I like the person in the other front seat equally as well as the person in the other back seat). I am incredibly inelegant when I get out of a car, and at least in the back seat people figure it's because you have to get past the front seat. Having typed that, I just realised that in the USA most cars probably have at least four doors but my point still stands because many UK cars only have two.

There are several ways you could interpret "flip my shit". The first is the intended metaphorical way (boring!) The second is the way Marten interpreted it (literal flipping of shit). But, "flip" is also a slang term for quickly buying and selling an asset (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flipping). Perhaps Tai has recently purchased some shit she now wants to sell. It's also possible she wants to perform a mathematical operation on her shit (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flip_%28mathematics%29). Just make sure to watch out when Tai flops her shit.

Seconded. I did mine ('90) in representation theory of algebraic groups, which is a mixture of group theory and algebraic geometry. Only after I had completed my degree it dawned on me that I don't have to understand algebraic geometry to do my stuff. I just have to believe in (the results of) algebraic geometry.

Also the standard references to deeper AG are available in French only, so you lost me at that point.

I love algebra! I haven't gotten further than commutative and homological algebra in preparation for algebraic geometry so far, but I'm optimistic that I'll learn it yet.
Also, I didn't realise there were so many mathematicians around.

You have to admit that mathematicians are awesome in regard naming things: "flips" and "flops"; there is a whole field called "tropical geometry", there are "sheaves" (with "stalks") and "germs" and "flags". In theoretical physics there are "bras" (this one is special in the sense that the name is not a reference to the colloquial meaning of the word; it's merely the first half of "Bracket") and "tadpoles", but these usually aren't used in maths, I guess.
And many others. Some of them are only funny in German, so I didn't list them.

Seriously, my undergrad thesis in pure maths dealt with it (also Lobachevskian manifolds - spherical and hyperspherical geometry). They have practical applications.

Well, I am reliably informed that women tend to look refreshed and slightly rejuvenated after a good lay, gets the blood flowing and all that. I have no idea if that can take 20 years off, but it can contribute.

I've been very curious about this during the whole arc, since it seems so far-fetched: what the hell did Veronica say to Jim when she contacted him? (http://questionablecontent.net/2680) How is that first email not incredibly awkward?

Also, at least Marten dated Vicky for two months (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=253) before moving across the country.

Not to be ageist, but older couples tend to get together more quickly. When my Mom remarried, she got engaged after only knowing my stepdad for about 6 months. Its a bit more exaggerated here, but I kind of feel that when you're older, you are more quick to settle down, especially if you've already had a long term marriage/kids.

Plus VV was looking to retire anyway. She doesn't seem to have too much tying her to California aside from clients and other people in the scene. Moving to the town where her son lives doesn't seem like too far fetched an idea, regardless of the Jim situation, but that certainly doesn't hurt.

He decided it was a great idea to retain Faye as a qualified babysitter because she taught his daughter how to make an alcoholic beverage.

I think it's fair to say Jim has demonstrated less-than-calculated decision-making in the past.

Aside from shifts in drawing style, most women tinker with their hair a lot. I like that Jeph isn't afraid to change things up in the hair/clothes/glasses style/whatever, it helps make the characters more real and likeable for me.

This may have been her first romantic encounter since the divorce, which would make it her first romantic encounter with someone who is interested in her gender in possibly decades.

True.  She alluded to being very lonely at the wedding so she was probably looking to stop fooling around and actually settle down.

I think the reason we haven't seen much of the Secret Bakery is that it wouldn't have done much 'til now to advance the story. Dora's got Tai, Padma's presumably still in Cali, and the SB's arrangement with COD is pretty much on autopilot by now (how many times would we have needed to see Elliot dropping off baked goods and picking up beans?). Now that VV has come out to meet Jim, it's likely that they'll have their own subplot and we'll see more of Veronica, Jim and Sam at the very least, though it also leaves the door open for more Secret Bakery shenanigans.
