Title: Realism in QC
Post by: Nepiophage on 29 Mar 2015, 05:15
I always thought that Coffee of Doom's open contempt and abuse of the customers was a joke -- until I saw this:

heh, I thought this topic was going to be about how the realism in the series has ramped up over time, making previously-funny things like female-on-male abuse seem a lot less funny.

Apparently snooty, angry baristas was a pretty common thing for a while- not sure how true that still is. The internet has quadrupled the amount of sass some retailers have with customers.

This article seems to bear out the realism of QC, or at least it demonstrates that Tai has plenty of real-life counterparts in (real) Northampton. Because the list of 100 locations twice mentions Smith's library.

The 100 Gayest Places You’ve Had Sex  (http://www.autostraddle.com/the-100-gayest-places-youve-had-sex-285122/) (Autostraddle)

Note, probably SFW as not actually explicit, but you may want to play is safe and view the link as NSFW.

Kind of on topic: Webcomic Chat's Twitter feed asked five general questions for artists. These were Jeph's responses:

WebComicChat @webcomicchat
Q1: Would you be friends with your own characters if they were real?
@jephjacques
Q1: only some of them

Q2: Is  it possible to have a meaningful relationship with a character, or this this seem weird to you?
Q2: it's possible AND it's weird

Q3: Are creator/character relationships always synonymous with character development? Or, does it go deeper?
Q3: always be prepared to kill

Q4: Have your relationships with your characters ever seeped into the real world? How do people react?
Q4: see Q3

Q5: Is there anything you'd like to tell to one or more of your characters if they could hear you?
Q5: just kiss already

Harriot and Yelling bird is finally happening? Yes!

I don't think i could ever write some of the scenes that go down in QC. maybe it's due to real life experiences (which i know Jeff has too before anyone says) but the idea of making a whole world and people and their social lives and deliberately making them suffer and have misunderstands and behave like Dora has recently... i just couldn't do that, it would feel so cruel to me.

part of me would think "you are in control of these lives, why do you choose for them to suffer?"

Every creator is asked that same question.

But hasn't Jeph made it mostly clear he wants his characters to be good to each other, to succeed? Or am I mis-remembering what he's said about them elsewhere? Aside from that, many storytellers acknowledge that their characters develop a mind and will of their own.
