Title: BEST GAME EVER (played)!
Post by: LiterSize on 23 Dec 2004, 14:16
It's only fair....

A game I haven't been able to put down lately is Tales of Symphonia.  I <3 RPGs, and that you take such a role in battle RT is my fave aspect.  The character designs and unlockables make it a good play... even past the 100 hr. mark.

My favorite game ever played will always be River City Ransom. Nothing beats rolling through a city pounding the snot out of your own age group that inhabit said city. Man... good times, there.

i don't remember RSR...i had little in the way of older system games.

that said i think GTA:  san andres.  mostly for the non-violent aspects though the violent ones in the game are fun as well

Oh man, I loved River City Ransom. Me and my sister played that game for hours on end. I loved Super dodge Ball too, so much that it makes me wonder why Technos Japan doesn't really make games anymore... but I guess they really must have not sold that well for whatever reason.

Blaster Master was another one I played a lot of. Never beat that game, it got so difficult, and it was one of those older games with a limited number of continues.

Lately I've been playing a lot of Sid Meier's Pirates! It's really good. Also EverQuest II, but the game is so buggy right now I can't fully recommend it. It's way fun though despite it all, if MMORPGs are your thing.

Technos doesn't make games because they no longer exist, dude.  RCR EX was put out by Atlas.

But yeah, RCR is addictive. Even after you're stats are full, you just keep taking kids' money Hehehe

Bubble Bobble was frickin' awesome too. I kept looking for that game on Game Boy when I finally got one, years ago... but could only find wierd offshoot titles that were named the same but were not actually the same type of gameplay. o.O

What was up with Super Dodge Ball in the arcade, btw? Was that also made by Technos Japan? It was so different and... crappy. In the arcade.

Funny if you go through all of Technos Japan's releases on NES... they like recycle the same BGM for like all of their titles lol.

I cant narrow it down to one so I will make a small list:

Baldurs Gate 2 - RPG perfection if you ask me. Played it trough twice so far and enjoy every single minute of it (that adds up to hours and hours).

Diablo 2 - Cant say that this is the best game out there. Its braindead, simple and SO DAMN addictive. Played it on and off since the release and just quit it for the 3rd time (deleting everything I got each time). I blame friends online for making me stay with this game for so long.

Half-Life - Best FPS game ever if you ask me (closly followed by HL2).

GTA:VS - Dont need to say why.

River City Ransom truly was a god among games.

I was also a fan of Sid Meier's Pirates-- I see there is a new version out, too.  Does anybody know if it is any good?

I liked it when games were nice and uncomplicated.  My brain can't keep up with fifty buttons and such.  RCR was great because it was a classic example of "walk around the streets of slum city and bash people" with the stores added as a little twist.

best oldschool arcade game: bubble bobble, for realz

best arcade game: street fighter 2 (and all the subsequent versions)

best fps: halflife 2.  apart from the ending, this is absolute goddamn gold

best rts: starcraft with the broodwar add-on, hands-down the best-balanced RTS i've played

best scrolling shooter: ikaruga.  simple idea, pulled off absolutely awesomely.

best MMORPG: i'm gonna have to say World of Warcraft.  i mean, i've only played Everquest, Final Fantasy XI online, City Of Heroes, Guild Wars & WoW, but as far as i can see, FFXI was pretty much the best ever, and for me WoW has beaten it.  they haven't done it with flashy graphics, they've done it with cool gameplay.  i'm close to level 20, and for me it still mostly feels like a really good single-player RPG that just so happens to have these other dudes running around in it that you can team up with sometimes.  i mean, ask me again in 30 more levels & i can give you a better comparison to high-end EQ gameplay.  but so far it's got FFXI's 1-20 gameplay beat.

Using My friend's NES, I got into "Bubble Bobble", and "Air Fortress."
When growing up I played Sid Mier's Civilization (for DOS)

Fast forward one decade, "Final Fantasy XI" kept me busy for nine straight months, longer than any other game (don't play it anymore :().
I am currently into "Halflife 2" and "Rome: Total War."

I'm a sucker for the GTA series. The original GTA, on pc kicked ass,it was the game that got me into games. It was great to play and easy to mod if you were sad like me. I'd probally still be playing if today the cd hadnt exploded my cdrom :/

GTA VC and SA are both pretty sweet, as was GTAIII, but the PS2 dosent match up to the PC - the graphics arent as good, and i miss aiming with the mouse and being able make the cars stupid fast, IMO the story and charachters in vice city were betterthan san andreas too - i cant wait till SA comes out on the PC, but until then i'd say my favorite all time game is GTA VC.

The only other games that come close for me are the quake series, maybe mario kart double dash(gamecube) or colin mcrae 2(psx) for multiplayerness, but then again i havent played a whole lot of games.

Morrowind for eva! Not only is it so big you have to play through it 3 times to fully appreciate it, it is the only game i've ever gone wandering about the countryside to sightsee. Plus it has none of the shitcocks that infest MMOs.

Ico.  The game made me cry.  No other game has ever done that.

Freespace 2, maybe.  I'm playing it again, and it's just so amazingly good.

XCom was pretty much the business too.  Scared the crap out of me.  I made the series extra psychologically damaging by renaming all my troops to names of my good friends.  So I'd have to send my good buddy Simon out into the hall to eat plasma, not just some faceless grunt.

I can't decide.

Argh.  How does it end?  It ends well.  I don't know how much is in the demo, but there's a ton of dark vs.light, life vs. death imagery and associations going on through the game, especially the last parts.  The more I think about it, the more amazing I find the game.  Once again, mostly because of the ending.  I'm really hesitant to give it away for anyone, because I really think it would detract from the experience.  It was one of the most satisfying storytelling experiences ever, for me, and I don't know that I can adequately explain why.  That includes books, movies, plays, opera, etc.

And here's where people respond, "Bah the end sucked nothing that amazing happened." and I become depressed.  The game had me in its grip from the opening cinematic.  The first time Yorda got attacked I jumped up off the couch (still holding the controller and playing) like someone had slapped my sister.  I was absolutely furious with the monster.  Not the game, not the designers, that specific monster.

EDIT: Digs, you are clearly lacking a soul. :(  There were one or two rooms where getting her in the right place was difficult, but that's it.

I wouldn't get Crystal Chronicles for just single player, but if you can find 3 people to join in, it is awesome.  Especially tough boss fights and stuff, where it requires coordinated spell casting (multi-caster combo spells with particular effects), healing, physical attacks and bucket management.  It's glorious.  Everyone's yelling and running around at the same time:

"Who has Life?  We need a Holy on that ghost, I combo with Fire, ON THREE!"
"Bucket is heading toward the cliff, everyone move!"
"Charging Ice on that Orc, everyone with ice combo for blizzaga!"
"That bomb dude went down, everyone get away from it!"

Single player is just you and a moogle, which is cool--but just not cool enough.

A DS version is coming eventually, and thinking about that makes me very happy.

Favorite PC game: Freelancer  (easy-to-mod open ended space games rule)

Favorite console game:  The original Super Smash Bros.  A friend and I rented it right after it came out, and played it for eight straight hours.  No bathroom breaks, no snack breaks, just bashing each others' heads out.  It's a shame that the graphics are sobad I can't stand to look at it anymore.

Favorite handheld game: Super Mario 64 DS.  Awesome remake of the original on the NDS, it kicks butt.

Korlin, Link to the Past is the one you're thinking of I'm sure.  I did play SF 1 quite a bit back in the day, a tiny convience store out in Clallam Bay, WA use to have it (Clallam Bay being third to last town before falling into the ocean) and it was awesome.  Saget was the main boss as far as I remember

Yep, I played it.  The sprites look absolutely HORRENDOUS.  And it had characters like Birdie the hulking chained brit punk and others who made it into the "remake", Street Fighter Alpha/Zero, which was supposed to be a prequel to SF2, taking place around the same time as SF1 but making it actually not suck and make sense.

If you play the CPU in an Alpha game, though, prepare to get your ass handed to you.  Especially Alpha 3.

I like Wind Waker, but it's not my favorite. It has the best plot and most life and fun, but the sailing was poorly done, the Triforce quest at the end was ridiculous and, overall, it was too damn short.

I abhor Four Swords though. It was fun for a little while until I realized how stupidly easy it was. It was a game built entirely on nostalgia and a gimmick, which isn't good enough.

My favorite is pretty much the least favorite of many a person: Majora's Mask. It was refreshingly original(especially after the overrated rehash that was Ocarina), complex, and, best of all, free flowing and non-linear. Brilliantly made, but I understand why a lot of people wouldn't like it.

Ahh yes, Link to the Past, that was it. Absolutely fantastic game, although I never was able to finish it. Got to about the 6th dungeon in the dark world (the one on turtle mountain) and was stuck. I still remember the shakes I got after defeating the game's first temple boss (six huge bouncing knights) because of the ryhtmic thudding of the enemies and the eeeeevil music.

Ahh, good times...

In other news, Fave Planescape character? I'd have to say Dakkon... Although Annah was cute. Actually, anyone know of any mods/extensions to the game, like, fan-made?

Majora's Mask.
Majora's Mask made me feel things that were wholly unwelcome. Failing Anju and Kafei comes to mind. There were times I could've cried. That's happened three times as a result of a story, and I won't be forgetting Majora's Mask as a result. It's not my favourite Zelda game, but the story is probably at its strongest there.

It isn't as good on the replay value, if you ask me - a bunch of the new stuff feels like novelty for the sake of novelty. Original, though, to be sure.

I never owned a console before, now my brother has an XBOX at home, but having never really played them I can't stand using the controller and everyone beats me at everything. So all my favorite games have been for PC: Deus Ex, Half-Life (1 and 2), Knights of the Old Republic, and StarCraft (which I played way too much in my younger years).

...Okay, that's not true. I've played a very limited amount of Zelda: Ocarina of Time when my friend had an N64. That was a really cool game, although I hadn't played any of the other Zelda games (actually, I still haven't.) Chrono Trigger as well. That I played... umm... in a questionable manner let's say.

It's hard for me to pick one best game and ignore the different genres they fall under. So I'm going for the game that entertained me for the longest time, which was StarCraft.

For older systems, it's gotta be Chrono Trigger. Too many endings and sub-quests for any normal mortal to complete. Brilliant storyline, brilliant characters, just brilliant.

For newer systems? Not so sure. There are plenty of really good games, but off the top of my head, I can't think of any one that I could call the best. I'm playing Jet Set Radio a lot lately, for no reason, so let's just go with that for now...

Edit: Now I think about it, Shenmue, I fell in love with that game. Let's go with that instead.

Final fantasy IX is my favorite game ever. i am one of the few people i have ever heard of who re-plays RPG's for fun.

then again, i think my life is crap and RPG's are a great escape, ans so are consequently take up most of my small library of games (my friends get mad because i have so few multiplayer titles)

I do that too.

But I agree with the folks who said Chrono Trigger.

Just remembered... Am I the only person who really, really liked FF8?

Seriously, I thought it was very good, and the drawing of spells really appealed to me.  Not my fave FF, but nowhere near as bad as some people said.

Most involving, fun, stylish and generally awezome:

Planescape: Torment and Fallout 2. Those are, imo, the two best roleplaying games ever, or just the two best games ever, full stop. Torment is really the kind of a game that, if I could only choose one game to play for the rest of my life, that would be it. I sincerely recommend it to anybody, from the bottom of my cold and withered swedish heart.

Most enduring pleasure:

Super Mario Bros 3. I played that game for years when i was younger. I still catch myself thinking of booting it up again a few times each month.

The Specialists. I've played it for a hell of a long time now, without really stopping for other games more than maybe a week. Truly superb and exhilerating game, or mod, rather. If you like to try, it's free and can be found at www.specialistscentral.net; free provided that you own vanilla Half Life, of course.

Those four would be the ones, I guess. Tied first place, or first place in different categories, if you will.

I think we can all agree that this discussion is now closed.

It might be... I't a good one. Anyway, " a link to the past" it's a very nice game too. (i love the little link )...

But the best game ever... Of course, Final Fantasy VII :)

Damn, tough one to answer.  In terms of hours played, that'd be SoF2.  Sucked up about 2.5 years of my life in terms of online gaming.  In fact, SoF2 is how I know Jeph.  :)  Played that game for 12-18 hours a day for a few months straight.  Just totally owned it.

Half Life 2 features quite nicely.  Awesome graphics, awesome gameplay, wicked story (minus the ending).  KotoR and KotoR2 were also nice time sucks.  Halo, Halo 2.

The entire Civilization series.  Ownage.  Any Sim City that wasn't 4 or higher.

The Fallout series.

Ultimate racing game:  Burnout 3.

So many more.  Oh god, I love my games.
Title: BEST GAME EVER (played)!
Post by: happybirthdaygelatin on 27 Jan 2005, 12:35
This is just about impossible to answer if it is just one.  The things that make KotoR beutiful time sucks is going through to play the different alignments and classes.

I like Fable.  It has a pretty good broad skill/ability system that I like, sometimes classes are great but sometimes it's mucking about.  I stopped reading alot of the build up and hype to games at the begining of last summer and it helped to make gaming more fun.

Metroid Prime 2.  I hardly play because it feels wrong to just casualy play it.  This may be crazy talk to some and it is my (not so humble) opinon that Metroid as a FPS trumps both Halo games.  Then again I don't own Live or even have any sort of online access at home and some how ended up with friends not as big on FPS.

My name is Ray and I'm an unabashed gaming addict.

Grim Fandango! I totally and utterly forgot about this game.
Wonderful wonderful characters, brilliant plot, beeeeeautiful locations and fantastic script. All put together make one of the finest puzzle-adventure games ever created. I've yet to come across a game where I felt so deeply for the characters as I do with this game.
I highly reccomend it to anyone who can find it, it is rather old now, so would be a challenge to find it.

Good luck trying to get Grim Fandango to run if you've got XP. I tried everything I could think of and couldn't get it to work.

Speaking of games I wish would work on my computer, I'm surprised nobody's mentioned the original System Shock. While I wouldn't give it my #1 vote, it is widely viewed as one of the best games of all time.

System Shock 2 is freakin' amazing as well. The atmosphere is phenomenal... it's the creepiest game I've ever played. Anyone who says Half-Life scared the bejeezus outta them should try SS2 with the lights out. Those damn spiders sent shivers up my spine.

As for best game ever, I dunno. I'm an oldschool nerd, so I'm going to be the first in this thread (I think) to elect NetHack.

Actually, Grim Fandango runs fine on my XP box. I dunno what you're doing wrong...

For my favorite games, I'd say Phantasy Star 4 (Genesis) as my fave RPG - it just blows FFVII away in story, and in the coolest villain EVER....
For action, it's a toss-up between Gunstar Heroes, Vectorman, and the Armored Core series. All are just great stuff.
For artillery-shooter, Gunbound. It's free, it's awesome. Go get it now if ya haven't.
For racer, NFSU. Not 2, 1. It just rocks...
And finally, for arcade/oddball game, Dance Dance Revolution (either Extreme2 or 3rd mix). I loves the DDR. I loves it good.

The Best Game Ever really depends on what genre you're looking at. If you are, for example, looking at the flight simulator genre, then the Ace Combat series really tends to dominate it. If you are looking at something a bit more open ended, like the RPG genre, then you get alot of stuff to think about. I guess FF7 WOULD be on my list if it was a bit more challenging. Or at all challenging. On the other hand, I guess that depends on who you are. I beat it before my friend did. My friend was already at the final boss when I started. Plus he was using cheats.

In any case, I guess the only game generic enough to score the best over all would have to be pong.

I still have an original pong. It's the bee's knees.

See, I don't put the FFs or any related genre game in the RPG territory.  RPGs are...  D&D style.  Yes.  That's it.  Anything else just doesn't fit into my world view.  And FF7 > *.  That was the most awesome game.

Works fine on mine I'm afraid, don't know what you're doing to not make it run. The only problem I have, is when I try to run any graphics acceleration, the characters disappear. I can still run around, just, can't tell where I'm going.

Well put point.  RPG isn't quite fitting for most games it is applied to.  I have to say I've had a strong itch to pay some D&D lately and it's annoying to have friends who always want you to DM.  The first FF is as close to RPG as you get in my book.  Lost my train of thought.  Heh.

I'm going to disagree. Even though I wasn't into it, I remember the beginnings of D&D; my friends were all about their characters. So, regardless, an RPG, IMO, is a type of game that is based around character development. I don't use D&D and RPG synonymously, but I do believe they go hand-in-hand because of the content. If FF is about character development, then they're an RPG. If someone is a D&D nazi, then they need to get over the use of the RPG label IRT other games. Linux, Windows and OSX are all OSs just like Morrowind, FF and Fable can all be RPGs.

I don't know, I've never been able to apply an RPG label to a futuristic anime-style game.  Just can't.  They're awesome games, but I don't put them in the old-school RPG genre.  But that's just me and how I classify them.  Not an attack against them.
Title: BEST GAME EVER (played)!

Didn't mean it as an attack on the FF series dude.  I was just stating that I pretty much agree that FF is not what I'd consider a RPG.  I like the series (for the most part, I don't care much for X or X-2).

Plus I wasn't just meaning FF.

I'd consider Fable more of an RPG because of the more choices you can make going more torward good, evil and even neutral.  Both KotoR I'd consder an RPG for sure.

Why does an RPG have to be fantasy based? Star Ocean was pretty decent, I consider that an RPG. There's a reason for labels, labels should be generic, like RPG, FPS, RTS, etc. When you start putting borders on things, then the creativity suffocates and the fans suffer. Bottom line, drix, or whatever his name is, frodo and orcs don't need to be an RPG requirement. I might not like FF, but I do think they belong under the RPG flag. Unless someone is so devoted to one game that they don't want to ruin the elitist vibe by letting other games share in the label?

As I said, I don't like to lump them together.  And no, I'm not trying to stifle any creativity.  I just don't like to label them as RPGs.  I play them, I love them, I just don't call them the same thing you do.  But what's in a name, anyway?  :)

I have to say I probably had the most fun with Gothic and Gothic II.  They had my favorite system of fighting (the 2nd one being much better)

Also what I loved about those games is the fact that if you pulled a weapon out in town or went into someone elses house (and being seen) others would threaten you to put your weapon away or get out of their house.  If you did not comply they would attack you.

Otherwise my favorite FPS is probably call of duty.
My favorite Snes game would have to unoriginally be Chrono Trigger.
Nes: Ninja Gaiden as frusterating as it may be.
Flash: Madness interactive

PSOne:  FFVII
Dreamcast:  Skies of Arcadia (It's a game with Air Pirates in, come on!)
PS2:  GTA:VC (Best music in a game, ever)
Xbox:  Star Wars: KotOR (Best droid in anything, ever. (http://www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=93))
