Unless Jeph wants to focus on playing D&D with his new cartoonist neighbours...

Seriously, I think that we're down to two options - More Faye and Bubbles or the consequences of Claire's new piercing. Regarding the latter, I'm not sure how that might go. On Twitter Jeph admits that he wants it to work out for Claire but, oddly enough, the way he phrased those Tweets makes me wonder if it will blow up in her face, big time.

I once pretended to flick a coworkers ear after she got it pierced and then accidentally DID flick it.

...she wouldn't talk to me for weeks.

All right, Marten should have seen that coming, but I see why he didn't.

Still funny though, I like how Claire's hair all stands up! And directly in front of the 'YES THIS WILL HURT' Poster!

I must admit, I might even start to like her a little bit if she goes for decker librarian, but at the moment, I think she's just up for an awkward reunion with Clinton.

Oh... Ouch!

It looks like I was right about this blowing up in Claire's face! Or, more specifically, I bet that Claire now feels like her face has just exploded! Nice job Marten! Still, it was only accidental and it is also quite cute the way that he can't help but be affectionate to her all the time. He really is falling in love with her, isn't he?

I'd really like to see the rules referred to here (I presume that they are for SOs' treatment of new piercings, possibly associated with the parlour's money back guarantee). No playing with new piercings probably is on there somewhere as is "It isn't our fault that you didn't believe the 'Yes this will hurt' poster!"

Additionally, I get the impression that Claire is in the process of emerging from a 'shut-in' period of her life during mid-transition. Consequently, she's experimenting with various looks and aesthetics so we should expect the occasional false start.

I'm sort of realizing that the 9:15-9:30 time frame I've gotten used to QC updating might be different now that Jeph's a Canada man. I also realize that might be just due to his moving. I'm prepared to accept both possibilities, they are both entirely better justified than my prior expectations, but it's a bit odd at the moment.

Considering Jeph has apparently moved to Nova Scotia(?), he also just went forward a time zone from Eastern to Atlantic, so I'm guessing he has a little jet lag on top of the aforementioned being-busy-unpacking-stuff.

Claire's last piercing was eclipsed by Emily out of the blue, and now Hanners gets a scary science machine.  Will she ever get the spotlight to herself for a change?

Dude, I have seen every episode since 2005 at least twice and seen a significant chunk of Classic Who. I was not reminded in the slightest bit, though I could absolutely see the 11th Doctor saying that, then proceeding to make an even larger mess.

It probably is a decontamination ray, considering the note and Hanners' obsession with keeping everything clean.  She may have stolen Claire's thunder, but at least the piercing site would now be germ-free.

A late reaction to Monday's comic. This stanza is rather well known among speakers of Danish:

To der elsker hinanden
kan volde hinanden mer' ondt
end alle de argeste fjender
der hævner sig verden rundt.

Two who love one another
can cause each other more pain
than all the most bitter enemies
revenging around the earth.

Hannelore, it is traditional that one tries to work out what the gadget is before you randomly fire it at acquaintances.

Knowing her dad, it is unlikely to be directly harmful but it is sure to be something weird. Maybe something like a synaptic mapper paired with a 3D holographic imager so that her dad can build AIs that mimic all her friends' bodies and personalities, so she doesn't have to worry about human germs anymore!

It also scans for all biological imperfections. "Ooh! That's a nasty ingrown toenail!"

Alternately, it's just a Star Wars toy that flashes green and makes a 'Byooo' noise when you pull the trigger. Dr Elicott-Chatham still hasn't got used to the fact that Hannelore isn't 13 years old anymore.

Am I the only one simultaneously not shocked, but absolutely terrified that Hannelore has an app for orbital railgunning?  My only questions like somewhere down the path of why in the name of everything she didn't use it when encountering Marigold's apartment or any of a number of other similar situations.  I could totally see her just railgunning things into nonexistence then calling down the robot repair squad to rebuild everything atom by atom to perfection, only sanitized to within an inch of the city's life.

The orbital railgunning app has been known for a while, although it was known as "orbital bombardment app".

Assuming it's the same ofc. Dropping a tungsten rod sounds like something a railgun would do.

For now, I'm sticking with 'holographic imager'. That said, maybe Marten should check the mind-control option by asking Hannelore to do something uncharacteristic. Hanners' test of this option was... sub-optimal anyway and I suspect that she doesn't really know how that sort of thing would work. Marten has to be sure, just for the sake of science, you understand!

Am I the only one simultaneously not shocked, but absolutely terrified that Hannelore has an app for orbital railgunning?

That's what you get for being a newbie! Those of us who have been here longer, or have read the archives, will remember that Hanners wanted to drop a 'Rod of God' orbital attack on Coffee of Doom to kill the spiders in the basement. She actually had already transmitted the attack co-ordinates to the space station and was waiting to start the count-down when Dora stopped her! (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2468)

What does "Staph" and "Strep" mean ??!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

'Staph' - Staphylococcus - A family of mostly-harmless bacteria that live on our skin and mucus glands; when they get out of their 'comfort zone', they can cause nasty diseases like food poisoning.

'Strep' - Streptococcus - Another large family of common bacteria that normally live on the skin. The nastier sorts can cause infections if they get under the skin and into the blood. Others can cause pneumonia.

Over on the Subreddit, someone suggested that it is an AI detector. It identifies AIs no matter how near-perfectly human their chassis (it probably flashes red when it does that). It's Dr. Elicott-Chatham's way of reassuring Hannelore that she isn't in a simulation filled with artificial people to help her learn to function socially.

The poster on the Subreddit speculated that the result, when she shoots the detector at Bubbles, is a shock to everyone.

Aaaaaaaaah !!!! Thanks ! I wasnt even thinking about the possibility of that referencing different types of bacteria.

On the other hand, them as a couple might make for the ultimate 'odd couple' pairing. I am against it.

Everyone is forgetting that, since Faye got her new job, Pintsize has been thinking of a career change. If it makes him super-powerful, it might just accelerate his move into professional prize-fighting. Alternately, the doohickey might flash red to warn Hannelore of a potential/actual letch.

I can't actually see him wanting to wipe out humanity, mostly because it would reduce the availability of porn.

Meanwhile, it looks like Claire is having another one of those experiences where it is revealed to her just what a surreal social circle she's gotten entangled in via Marten!

Honestly? Not at all, really. It didn't add anything to the comic, punchline or otherwise, and felt like she was there just to... well, be there. Her commentary feels forced and shoehorned in, as though it was felt that it was absolutely necessary to say -something-. That neither Marten nor Hanners had any reaction to anything she said solidifies it for me - she's really a third-wheel in this particular exchange, IMO.

I came here to post that this strip feels like vintage QC, heavy on goofy SF dialogue. Claire simply wouldn't understand - Marten and Hanners go back almost to the beginning of QC time and Claire wasn't even in the story when conversations like that were common, so she's out of her depth here.

If it goes on for much longer, though, she'll disrupt everything with one of her puns...

anyone else think this is starting to relate to alice grove?
Now you mentioned it, it does seems like that. In that case Hanners might become Alice as she has both the resources and technology to put her in that position.

Hmm. If I were going to tie them together, I'd say mother of Alice. Alice is much less baseline human than Hanners but Hanners would have the coin and facilities to make Alice possible.

However, I believe Jeph recently reiterated that Alice Grove is NOT the future of QC.

A phone call lasts minutes, more if there's time- related conflicts. A text takes seconds to read and the same to respond. Voice-based communication is only better if it's in-person

This little arc has thus far felt very "Classic QC" to me, I'm digging it. Riffing in the coffee shop on A Weird Thing with insight from two characters and asides from a third is a formula that really grooves with me, and it's a throwback to my favorite "era" of QC. Marten and Claire's almost-matching expressions of "DOY" in the last panel makes me smile. Also, I don't know if it's just me, or does Dora's face look supremely unnatural in panel two? I can't even put a finger on what's off, it's just...odd.

How does it take longer to say what you were going to type? If he answers the phone, it's as fast as texting, if not faster.

Social niceties, among other things. It can't be like *ring ring* "What's this thing you sent me?" "It's a/an (x)" *click*

True, but you can't call your dad, "The fuck is this 'byooo' thingamajig?" have him answer and then hang up. There's so much more social etiquette around phone calls. That's what makes texting more efficient.

Well this is an extremely unscientific and dissatisfying way of finding out. "Just ask". The puzzle is the fun bit, and then testing limits, alternate uses, and other hypotheses. If you just ask, all you have is an answer, and likely one that isn't as meaningful/interesting as one that is hard-fought.

Although, it's good not everything has to be learned that way. We'd never get anything done.

And, Hanners, call your dad. Parents like talking to their kids sometimes.

Dora, sit down please. I want to explain something to you: Just asking Dr Elicott-Chatham is not fun! 'Fun' is to speculate wildly about what it could do and then to run around town doing random and potentially-dangerous experiments to determine the Doohickey's function! FWIW, I do suspect that was the good doctor's intention when he sent it to Hannelore, all whilst laughing his 'mad scientist laugh'.

Meanwhile, it looks like poor Dora is still having to be the voice of sanity, reason and the like for her friends. From the expression on Claire's face, this realisation came as a deeply unpleasant shock!

It also has to be answered at the exact moment (nobody uses voicemail), and even if you choose to ignore it and call them back later, stopping it from ringing loudly for a full minute requires an active button press. I've gotten irritated at my brother for calling rather than texting when I'm in the middle of a round of a video game.

Awww, that's no fun!

Also, it's kind of sad that Hanners thinks a call would bother her dad. Damn kids and their texting.

It is sad, but it's consistent with what we already know of their relationship.
I can't imagine Hannerdad not being thrilled to get a call from Hanners no matter what he's doing.

We've seen how he reacts to calls from Hanners.  He tells her he's busy, then calls her back to ask if she's pregnant.
It's a pregnancy tester, then?
No, it induces parthenogenesis. Hanners, Claire, and Marten are all going to be mommies.

That's going to be fun to explain to Veronica. "Well, the good news is you are going to be a grandmother..."
