Title: WCDT Strips 3046-3050 (14th to 18th September 2015)
Post by: BenRG on 13 Sep 2015, 12:08
Well this could either be a new long-running plot or a bait and switch! I really don't know which at this point!

What's my guess? I'm thinking that it is going to be a throw-away joke of some type that won't be ever mentioned again. At the most, it will turn out to be a single-use Chekhov's Gun that will have a very specific use as a plot driver for a specific character arc and will never be seen again.

What would I like? Option 1 with a very, very cryptic comment about it being "part of Hannelore's heritage" and Dr Ellicott-Chatham hinting heavily on some kind of mysterious origin story for him and Beatrice. "We are... refugees, if you like. For everyone's safety, that had to remain secret. However, Hannelore is now old enough to know who she is... what she is."

Ripe = black? Because agreed, green olives are tasty enough (a little too salty, but I'll eat 'em) but black olives are the ones that come on pizza usually and are just gross.

Aww come on, you get space pizza and the first thing you say is 'I hate olives'? Really?
(besides, olives are awesome)

Also, that seems terribly unsafe, I mean it landed pretty close.

I'm not sure how that conversation went:

'Hello dad, could you tell us what kind of device you sent me? It looks very nice and I like it. Love, Hannelore'
'Hey, Hannelore, why yes it IS my prototype for the Heisenberg compensator. It also scans you and tries to replicate the thing you want most in that particular moment. Wanna try?'
'Hello dad, yes that would be nice. What do we have to do? Thanks for the Heisenberg compensator!'

I'll admit to being skeptical about how well the pizza pie would come through the g-forces involved in the landing (I didn't see retro-rockets or a chute, so I'm assuming it hit the ground at terminal velocity). The good news is the heat of re-entry would keep it from getting cold. Of course if the shielding wasn't good, the payload might have been very crispy by the end.

It started out frozen on the space station. The trick was using just enough heat shielding to cook the pizza without vaporizing it.

So, the Doohickey is a target designator for orbital cargo drops?

I'm thinking that Dr Ellicott-Chatham won't be limited to pizza either! Why not space fashions, space accessories and the latest prototypes of Weird SCIENCE! for Hannelore to enjoy? Something tells me that Northampton will become hazardous because all of the paternal gifts dropping from the sky!

Of course, we are all guilty of making an assumption here: What if that isn't what the Doohickey does and, instead, the Doc sent a pizza down for our heroes to enjoy whilst they discuss what it does?

Now, I wonder if that pizza was launched cold and the thermal protection system on the descent capsule was minutely inadequate so that the heat of re-entry cooked the dish!

The slightly simplified character style in panels four and five is super adorable though.

That style has been used a few times in Alice Grove too.

I just want to add that Claire's punchline in the last panel made this strip what it is. There is all the wonder and 'Wow! Pizza from space! The appliance of science!' Then Claire leans over and basically says: 'Ugh! Olives! Can't stand olives on my pizza!"

Making such a mundane comment about something amazing is a nice bit of Pythonesque humour and helps further establish Claire's role as the laugh line provider in the current Marten-Hanners-Claire three-person comedy skit.

Olives - black with Fetta cheese, or on Pizza - YUM. Green, stuffed or whole, on their own or on salads - YUM.

Olives straight from the tree.... no thanks, they need soaking for at least 6 months or a year. We grow them in our backyard.

The actual answer is that they (and some people still do) systematically experimented with things to see if they were edible. At some point folk realised that thir preservation methods weren't perfect but could also produce desirable changes as well as staving off undesirable ones.

Also, much more interesting to me is; who was the first person to look at a lobster and go "you know what? I'm gonna eat that."

I imagine it's more like "yuck, these small fruits are not really tasty.  Let's dry them and grind them up for the hens.  ...hey, that's pretty good!"

(Three thousand years later...)

"Okay, the ham jar by the expeller... wait, what are these?"

I agree with Marten: Dr Elicott-Chatham has a lot of interesting hobbies! I'm pretty sure that this started out either as a military project or a humanitarian one to drop rescue packages to people stranded in isolated spots. However, he's found a more fun way to use the technology!

Personally, after Dora gets over the shock of finding a half-dozen space pizzas on the roof, I think that she's going to have the oddest special-of-the-day in the history of the shop.

That said, yeah, there is going to be a similar find on the roof of the apartment building. I have no idea what their landlord is going to think but it looks like Hannelore had better dust off that 'Living in a mansion somewhere' plan of hers because it might be the Plan-B that they're going to need!

It suddenly occurs to me that the way Marten and Hanners are treating this whole scenario tells you a lot about just how strange their lives are. This is seriously, seriously not a major weird event for either of them. It bodes well for Claire that she's letting this roll off her back too!

It would have been so interesting to have listened in on that 'phone conversation!

DORA: "Coffee of Doom! Caffeine with an unfriendly scowl! How can I help you?"

HANNERS: "Dora? It's Hannelore. Er... Is everything okay?"

DORA: "Everything's fine, Hanners! Don't forget that your break ends in 20 min..."

HANNERS: "D... Dora, can you do something for me? Please check the roof for me!"

DORA: "The roof? Why do you want me to...?"

HANNERS: "Don't a... ask me why. P... Please, don't ask. Just d... do it. Just check the roof and call me back. Please."

DORA: "Um... okay?"

Less than you think... depending on angle, by 5000 metres altitude it's slowed considerably, so impact velocity is about the same as if dropped from 5000m.

Depending on density and cross-section, that kind of shape might only hit at less than 60 km/h. If Jeph hasn't done research on it, he's guessed really well. Peak g-force might be 40g or so - 400 m/s-2.

The Genesis craft hit at 300 km/h, with a mass of 275kg and diameter of 1,5m, max decel 30g.  Assuming 15 kg mass, 1m diameter, 50 km/h is about right. Might be less. A 90kg mass with that cross-section hits at about 200 km/h.

Are we sure Hannerdad isn't planning to conquer the world?

An orbital mass driver, disguised as a pizza delivery service. Millions of robotic minions, just waiting to have their hidden loyalty programming triggered. Nanomachines that can be used to destroy cells within the human body.

And then there's Hannermom who we know is an evil corporate monster and at some point the two of them were apparently in love.

It may be that the only reason he hasn't launched the takeover while sittng securely in his space station is the love for his daughter who lives on earth and would be in the crossfire.

Well, they are. You've got to find a place to keep ypur jetpack after you've gotten to where you're flying, and if you don't and you walk around wearing it, it's always bumping into things, knocking things off shelves ... Boots, on the other hand, are on your feet. Though they do tend to mark up floors.

Well technically that belongs to her mother's company. But she may have sold some to Hannerdad. Even if Bob is an anthropc, I doubt those boots have enough lift to get him back into orbit. Or maybe he's just flying over to the Coffee of Doom to get a lift back with the Repair and Restitution team.

I am sort of wondering what kind of propulsion system his boots are using, where the fuel is apparently small enough to fit in them.

It's probably something exotic and they may not be 'rockets' in the traditional sense of the word but some strange kind of electric drive like a stationary plasma arc or ion jet. In the real world, they produce only tiny amounts of thrust (about equivalent to the weight of a piece of paper). However, QC isn't set in the real world and, apparently, doesn't have some of its physical limits!

Ah! It wouldn't be Claire if her first focus wasn't on tweaking Clinton's nose!

Seriously, I'm glad that Jeph has decided to at least make a reference to the fact that Marten has a seriously weird life and have Claire, who is, after all, an outsider, acknowledge this.

I've noticed that he's started to introduce a definite speaking pattern for Claire. She'll make a introductory statement like "I have a concern" and then wait to be asked to elaborate. I'm not sure if it's a sign of politeness or if she is nervous in social interactions and feels that she needs permission to be involved.

Continuity Note: Claire still has her hair down. So, it looks like she totally lost her hair scrunchie to the shock-wave when the Pizza Pod made its hard landing.

Man, I was pretty ambivalent about the septum piercing before. But the more I seeit, the more I dislike it. It's like my eyes focus on that instead of Claire's face now.

In truth, I barely notice it! Maybe I'm looking at the comic at too low a resolution but it isn't actually easily visible to me; it just looks like an art error!

I think the dear punchline could have just as easily been dropped by Dora or pre breakup Angus, but it's certainly core to the relationship that Claire's the younger one and still growing up a bit/coming out of her shell and that Marten's support is helping her do that.

Father's a bit much though. Marten doesn't have the authority figure aura for that, even if he was technically her boss.

Am I the only one who thinks that this mini-arc has a televisual 'three-act' feel to it? You could divide it into a standard sitcom episode format? Something like this:

Pre-Credits Teaser - Strip 3037
Act 1 - Strips 3038 to 3041 - 'Poof' makes a lovely segment ender and has a The Simpsons bait-and-switch feel to it;
Act 2 - Strips 3042 to 3045 - Dora's intervention of common sense is another perfect act ending moment;
Act 3 - Strips 3046 to 3048 - Resolution in act 3, as always;
Epilogue - Strip 3049 - Nice closing or post-credits joke scene.

"I want multiple pizzas."

My life philosophy in 3 words (and a letter).

Seems like a pilot's union would have fought the AI aircraft.  That's before we consider small, hobby aircraft.

How is the issue of sonic booms from pizza pods resolved?

We stop using glass in buildings and use Lexan instead, and we just get use to the booms (they become like the DING of a microwave)

Is it just me or does Marten sometimes come across as less boyfriend and more parent?

I'd say "older brother." Something he's done before, around young ladies with childlike aspects to their personalities (such as a certain skinny, other-worldly blonde). When he's not being discombobulated, that is.

Funny - to me, it actually feels like he's 'younger' somehow. More at ease with himself and the relationship. I think he takes pleasure in Claire 'learning relationships' & while helping her on the way, he can re-discover that for himself.
Hmmmmh ... actually that is pretty much a parent thing. :psyduck:

Anyhow, I like their couple dynamics - it's simultaneously innocent and very earnest. They are a nice couple. I like seeing them together.

a few dozen strips back (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2948)

I guess a few dozen is another way to represent over one hundred pages.

I'm sure that he can easily afford it.  What puzzles me, though (didn't think of it until you mentioned the repairs), is that Hanners didn't drag Marigold and Dale into a park or some place where the landing would be less destructive.

While not as bad as May, Marigold does have some impulse control problems... The time between the last two panels was probably about 30 seconds.. Just enough time for her to launch off the couch, grab the device and run to the roof to start byooing. Why and where Dale had that sign is probably not best to be asked...

If more people thought like me, we'd either be extinct by now or establishing colonies in other galaxies (I'm not sure which).

Really, Hannelore should have known better. Showing the Pizzatron to Dale and Marigold (the QC-verse's current 'student slackers' avatars) was always going to be a calculated risk.

Thx, I just looked in Google Maps and it seemed like the right one. I wouldn't have known, I just tried.

Regarding today's strip, that's basically what I would do when given orbital pizza bombardment devices.

Maybe this explains the mystery about Pizza Girl - she's an AI created by the Ellicott-Chatham empire, a sort of prototype before they had a massively radical outside-the-box rethink on the whole pizza delivery process.

Got the time for the Surgery on Monday.  Gotta be there by 07:00 on Monday morning for early Surgery.  According to the Nurse and the Doc, I should only be in till Tuesday - probably afternoon coming home - or Wednesday at the latest.

Got the Transport arranged, so I will have no troubles getting in.

The physics of this is annoying. Anything falling even from low earth orbit with no means of retardation would have a shed load of energy to spend.

Isn't there an XKCD "What If?" about this?

Way to not make a fair comparison; you're taking an article based around a naked steak being dropped uncontrolled and extrapolating to a pizza in its own little oven/aeroshell combo.
Like I said, the hard part is letting through enough heat to cook it but not enough to destroy it and most of that would be because of the ridiculous variety of potential routes the thing has to take; anything from straight down twenty miles to a nice long 3000km cruise depending on the relative positions of Station and the Byooo-box.

Well, OK, second hardest part, after "get funding for orbital pizza delivery project (est $3bn)”
