Long, long ago, in a galaxy far, far away...

(Okay, it was only about 1.4k strips ago, but bear with me)

I was routinely starting the WCDT and doing the poll thingy.

And then, Scott Walker came and stole my sunshine.

Eh.  It ain't entirely stupid if you drove there and it's too late for public transportation or taxis.  A bathtub and some sofa cushions is a lot more comfortable than a hospital bed and a bunch of broken bones.

I did the "wake up Sunday morning, with 9 people squeezed into a one bedroom flat" thing as a youth. I've seen people sleep in bean-bags, across bean-bags, under tables, on tables, in dining chairs... can't say the tub got any usage. Maybe we were just picky.

"Marten? From now on, our parties here are gonna be dry."

As far as 3 goes, you're forgetting drunk "logic".  There were more times than I'd like to admit where I woke up on my *own* couch without remembering how I even got home.  Since my bed was actually a shorter distance away, this made no sense whatsoever to a sober person.  I'm just glad that said couch was fairly comfy.

Your drunk logic was probably something like "If I go to bed, I have to brush my teeth and remove my clothes and so on. I'll just lie down on the couch to relax a bit first".

Of course, I may be doing him an injustice here. Do I really have any reason to believe that this isn't true? I mean... this is Veronica we're talking about here. Based on his father's wedding, I think that we can be sure that the people she calls family are at least as weird as she is.

She *does* sometimes use contacts.  It is rare enough, though that they probably don't work as well, or are just uncomfortable.

Oh, Pintsize, you rascal, putting things in peoples food and drinks.

It *sucks*  Last time it happened to me, I fell afoul of a co-worker's retaliation for a previous act on my part.  Even though I "had it coming", it was still unpleasant.

As a southerner, I can confirm that we do, indeed, get biscuits at McDs.

My wife found out the hard way one late night, though, that "all day" is NOT the same thing as "24 Hours".

If I didn't know you were a foreigner, I'd suspect you were a former roommate of mine. He never had any proof it was me, so there was no confrontation, just entertainment for me and confusion for him as to the foul flavor of his orange juice.

I'm from the US.  This case was part of the mutual pranking that we did to alleviate boredom at slow times.  The suddenly super-sugary drink (when I don't like sugar) was just one part of her retaliation for me tossing a giant spoonful of whipping cream that ended up landing on her cleavage (I was aiming at her head).  She almost fell on the ground just laughing at the face I made.

It just suddenly hit me... Pintsize is a masochist; he gets a high from being punched, smashed and disassembled! It's the only explanation I can think of for him continually pulling tricks like this, especially on people like Faye and Bubbles! Even if we take an optimistic approach and assume that he's just messing with the ladies' heads, he's still inviting retaliation and, look at the smile! He's looking forward to it!

No great surprise that Faye isn't a morning person. Although a prurient part of me wonders just what may have happened that made Claire decide that it is a bee-oo-tee-ful morning. It might also explain the lack of Marten.

[edit]
Prediction for tomorrow:
Marten (possibly unshaven) enters the kitchen to find Faye with Pintsize's head under her arm whilst Claire is banging it with a ladle like it was a bell or something. Naturally, Marten just doesn't want to know the details.

Pintsize is still in pieces in the kitchen. ALL. OVER. the KITCHEN.    2 (8.3%)
DORD.    5 (20.8%)
Spathe Ham with Waffles and Purple Monkey Dinosaurs.    0 (0%)
"Next Time, I'm un-spiking everyone's drinks."    1 (4.2%)

Never underestimate the power of the placebo effect!

Remember that Pintsize finds odd ways to help people; ways that most companion AnthroPCs would never dare to attempt. This could be just him playing with Claire and Faye's heads (in the former case, as revenge for the LOOM). However, there just might be some deeper intent at work here.

I always knew Claire would be able to hold her own.  This strip is so much better than 2896 (http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2896).

Also, I decided to take a break from the comic after that pointless episode with the Pizza Summoner, and it looks like QC became interesting and fun again while I was gone.  I missed a hell of a party.

Damn, Claire.

I suspect that's the most serious threat Pintsize has ever gotten - he's gotten wishes that he would be slowly and messily devoured by fiery electromagnetic destroyosaurs (http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=348), but he didn't think that those even existed, and it was just a wish, not a threat that it'd happen.

And, Claire's proving that she really didn't need 2896 to happen. She can defend herself, thank you very much.

I do wonder if there'll be a rift somewhere, though, between Marten and someone. Pintsize broke his agreement with Marten, but Claire just threatened Pintsize with a mindwipe (his entire memory capacity being filled with Geocities implying that the rest was erased to make room for it).

Marten once threatened to install Windows ME on Pintsize. That seems like a pretty serious threat.

I can't decide between panel five and panel four.

EDIT: I should point out that I think Claire is bluffing and doesn't really have USLOC data on her USB.  This would, IMO, only make her threat that much more badass, however.

I already loved Claire as a character, but I think this strip made me fall a little bit in love with Claire, and there's a distinction there.
I haven't posted here in forever, but reading this strip got me saying out loud, "My God, I think I'm in love with Claire."  Couple that with the vintage randomness-spouting by Marten and Faye on Tuesday, and I'm really liking this QC week.

I'm probably get hell for my opinion: Am I the only one getting a bit tired of practically every female character written being a badass? (Even Hanners can assert herself, i don't think we have ever seen any of the males do that.) Not just in QC but in other stuff as well?

It's like every author is afraid to write timid or not-smart or, well, weak female characters.

But it would make for a much more realistic cast and story.

I liked timid, dorky Claire.

I take it that it's a wider range of character types that you would find realistic, not that you think weak timid non-smart women are more realistic.

Hannelore is no Emma Peel, Raven never showed any fighting ability, and as for Cosette or Marigold ...

Badasses in a peaceful environment make for good humor. Broadsword in a coffee shop? Funny.

There's also the comic's overall theme of people overcoming limits and problems. Claire fighting timidity is part of the same pattern as Faye learning to allow relationships and Hannelore living a kinda-sorta normal life.

I'll just add that Marten is perfectly capable of asserting himself when he needs to. And on those occasions, the forums all reliably respond by saying something along the lines of "OMG has Marten grown a spine?" and then apparently forget all about it until the next time it happens.

None of the characters are 100% confident in 100% of situations. That seems fairly realistic to me.

Claire was very confident here because she could fall back on an area of her particular expertise.

Actually, none of Jeph's characters are like that and never have been. Claire has always had an aggressive, assertive side; it just was that it took specific circumstances to bring it out... like today.

I want to point out I wouldn't say Claire was weak at all. While timid and nervous that never really stops her from going after what she wants in life.

I'm thinking this is basically it.

Of course, I also think it's a bluff, because what server at Smif could even come close to using that dongle?
Title: Re: WCDT Strips 3076 to 3080 (24-30 October 2015)
Post by: bhtooefr on 29 Oct 2015, 03:22
Well, although she states it's a USLOC dongle, it actually has a real-world equivalent (including in the scale of the data), and that'd be downloading the Internet Archive's index.

In any case, there's differing time scales of information here, but as of December 2014, the Internet Archive has 50 PB of storage, with 9.6 PB in the Wayback Machine, 9.8 PB in the books/music/video collection. As of July 1, 2015, the Wayback Machine itself is 23 PB of storage (for a total of 32.8 PB), and growing by 50-60 TB per week.

However, we don't care about the database, we care about the index. As of January 2014, the Wayback Machine had 378,825,513,000 CDX records. Let's say 512 bytes per record, that's a high estimate, but we'll go with it. So, back then, just the index was 194 TB. It's likely tripled or quadrupled in size since then.

(It's worth noting that the USLOC's digital archive is "only" 5 PB: http://blogs.loc.gov/loc/2015/08/experts-corner-collection-development-officer-joseph-puccio/)

I'll also assume that the archive is at modern levels, despite the setting being possibly 2006. AIs will increase the size of the database.

So, assuming that Pintsize's OS doesn't have proper disk space management, any drive you could possibly put in Pintsize would be wiped. However, a very large server could feasibly handle that index - if we're going with the setting being 2006, you were looking at 750 GB HDDs for nearline storage. We'll go with 3 U of rack space for 16 3.5" drives, 42 U per rack, 168 TB per rack. So, four racks full of SAN, and you've got enough storage for the entire index and all student data. It'd certainly have to be a school that's serious about keeping a local index of the archive, but...

Of course, this is also something that you wouldn't just hand to an intern. This is something that not even Tai, and not even the head librarian, would have as a physical object like that, most likely. It'd be a shell script run by a cron job on their server, most likely.

I wouldn't go that far. But there is the point that Claire found a thing that really does frighten Pintsize. Stuffing him in odd places, dismembering him of stuffing his chassis with birdseed means nothing to him. At best it's a minor inconvenience, and he's known to do some of those things to himself for a joke or a lark. But it doesn't do anything to him permanently. At most it means Marten will have to clean out his chassis again, or he has to spend some time disassembled.

On the other hand, Claire's threat could significantly affect him. So could leaving him turned off for long periods of time, or pulling his personality core out a chassis, turning off his wifi connection or similar things. Until people start treating to do those sorts of things, it's all just a game to him. Or it's him using negative psychology to prod people into action.

If Claire actually follows through on this, I'll be pretty outraged, because that's basically intentionally brain-damaging him and/or wiping out his entire self.  As long as it's just a threat that she's not likely to follow though on, her brandishing that USB drive at Pintsize is no different from Faye brandishing a series of swords at a series of people throughout the years.

One: I'm... confused about the state of network/computer security in QC-Verse. I mean - you can build an USB-Stick that might attempt (and succeed) to infect the OS of the system it's stuck into. Three things would be necessary for that - malicious intent: you really have to want to build such a dangerous thing (usually, you don't want an USB stick that starts overwriting everything once you stick it into a random computer), exploiting vulnerabilities (the people who build computers don't want that either) and three - the computer must be turned on. So, maybe Pintsize could turn himself off as last line of defence?

So, why would a library build that? Or at least, something you can't turn off from the computer's side if you decided you didn't want all those petabyte of data (mistakes happen, y'know)?

So, Claire must be lying (we hope), or she really doesn't understand what that USB-Stick's doing (maybe believed an explanation by Tai), or it's the truth and the QC-Verse is even more terrifying and deadly for AI. And the guys doing computer security have no idea what they're doing.

Where is the outrage?

Eh, noo. Faye tells Claire to stop sassin' her: She's basically already beating her up. Claire threatens Pintsize with brain damage: Aww, look how badass adorable she is!

Windows autorun.  Sony did the same with "audio" CDs (which didn't follow red book standards, but I digress) to put rootkits on vulnerable machines in order to "prevent piracy".  Millions were infected, and no penalties came down.  Hell, the exec ordered it probably got a huge bonus.  If the QC-Verse is anything like the real world when it comes to computer security…  Well, I can't think of one.  Even those of us who run Linux or Mac have to qualify as someone who could be diagnosed with clinical paranoia to stay anything even approaching "safe".

Mind you, autorun isn't even needed for a specially crafted malicious USB drive. Note that Claire claimed to have to hit a button on it.

Plug drive in, it's a USB composite device that is both mass storage and HID. Hit the button, the HID endpoint sends LGUI+R, then sends the string "E:\payload.exe", then Enter. Or, for that matter, it could just send friggin' Enter once the AutoPlay dialog (which was specifically added because of things like Sony's rootkit) comes up.

Also, looks like Jeph's using a different font?

I actually put some thought into this yesterday. We don't know much about AI consciousness. But like bhtooefr said, we know about autorun features, which try indexing anything on a new drive. If AI consciousness was made to be inherently curious, so they'll try and save (learn) anything they're shown, that might result in Pintsize freezing up until his memory is full. Hence the "seizure". It wouldn't overwrite anything, but Claire never mentioned that. Having to sieve through Gigabytes of Geocities-sites to filter out his important porn collection might be horrible enough for Pintsize. People implementing such a feature seems plausible to me. Who would've known there was a way to attach a storage in the petabyte range to an AI in the near future (sadly such assumptions happen way too often). And the button on the stick? That just establishes the quantum tunnel, nothing more. No malicious intent there.

Basically, in that moment he knew, he fucked up.

I wonder if it'd be possible to make popcorn on Pintsize's head. His mouth seems to be the perfect dispenser.

His head might make a pretty good covered wok, too. Turn it upside down. Nice parabola.

You mean she was bluffing? Inconceivable!

You keep using that word.  I do not think it means what you think it means

I was right, she was pulling a fast one on Pintsize.  Not many can do that, she is a worthy foe.

Assault and bullying is fine if aimed at an AI?
Not surprised by Faye, she is a nasty thug, but very disappointed in Claire.

I get the feeling it's fine if it's aimed at Pintsize. If it was Momo, Winslow, or even May, I think people would be less than thrilled.

There's quite a lot of empty space in Pintsize's head.

Why would the Library of Congress be interested in archiving Geocities web sites from 2001?

Because they know how much fun it is to ride the Way Back Machine.

I'll have to echo gopher and War Sparrow:

After #3079 I had to go back and see whether I missed a strip, because that reaction just seemed exaggerated. My interpretation of his comment in the previous strip is that it's a nonspecific joke, not "Faye I'll make you relapse into drinking". From this we've gone to Pintsize being threatened with "the equivalent of a grand mal seizure" (which is really bad, mmkay) and finally being stuffed full of birdseed.

Sure, Pintsize has been a (both figurative and literal)  punching bag since early on, but then he was actually really misbehaving - honking boobs, destroying property, the like. Also in the meanwhile, the topic of AI rights has been developed more inside the strip (conversations with Momo, May's job search, Bubbles' past...), and when Faye switched off Pintsize the last time she went back and apologized. Since AI rights haven't been discussed a lot in connection to Pintsize (other than the time Clinton came to do a survey), it may be easy to forget them. Also Pintsize or Winslow look less like humans, so in a way I also understand why more readers have a different view.

We don't yet know whether this is the start of an arc or some one-off strips, but I love the QC where storylines are connected, things develop and the panels aren't a sandbox for playing with static characters. Having these strips stand in the middle of it all doesn't feel natural, and I'll be disappointed if this is the direction Jeph choses to develop the strip. (Though  there's no doubt I will keep reading!)

She's more fur now than dog, tired and lazy.

A dog can be lazy without being tired; my old dog Polly has always been like that.  She's fluffy like Shebly as well, but black.
