I like them.
What do you guys think?
-
god I love the arcade fire. I love bands that give you those good chills down your spine. only a few have, polyphonic spree, godspeed you black emperor, arcade fire to name a few.
-
Nope, don't like 'em.
-
You didn't have an OMG FUCKING AMAZING LOL!!11!!!11one1! option...
-
they float my boat
-
I listened to some samples and frankly, the guy's voice grates upon my ears like a cheese grater upon a cancer.
-
They are a fine group of young men and woman.
-
At first meh was the result, but now it's like ZOMG. Or something.
Anyway, they are the core of my current aural input recently, and I'm praying they'll do a UK tour when their record is finally unleashed in February. PLEASE!
-
I listened to a few samples too, but loved what i heard. My plan is to live like crap for a week, so i can afford to buy the album. I don't need nutrients!
-
I say 'yes' though at first I wasn't as thrilled with the whole thing -- I just was thrilled with like 5 songs.. soon enough the whole album was listenable though!
The s/t album is rather good, too.
-
I had the pleasure of seeing The Arcade Fire last night. They were absolutely amazing. They were so energetic, it was great. Unfortunately I was feeling quite horrible and probably didn't enjoy it as much as I would have had I been feeling better.
Set list:
Wake up
Laika
No Cars
Headlights
French Song
Power Out
Rebellion
7 Kettles
Born On A Train
Crown of Love
Neighborhood
(a talking heads cover, not on the set list i got, and i can't remember the name)
Haiti
Backseat
The opener, Final Fantasy, was GREAT. It was just one guy and a violin that he would play and record as he played and then loop it and play over it and sing. He was really really enjoyable and really creative. I have never heard so many different sounds made from a violin. He also played violin with The Arcade Fire.
....so i guess you can tell my vote is yes... amazing.
-
I really like one song at a time. If I listen to more than one or two in a row, I start getting a little sleepy. Might just be it's going to take me a little time to warm up to them. A lot of good bands are like that.
-
most people seem to like the Arcade fire like 40000thousandtimes more if they saw them live.
-
yeah, un annee sans lumiere was right, i was just in a hurry and was copying exactly what they had on the set list.
-

True. I was rawkin' out hardxcore and their songs basically bring a tear to my eye every time I listen. Except No Cars Go, which is completely underwhelming since I heard it live before hearing the studio version.
-
I thought the arcade fire were just another crew of acclaimed canadian indie pop poseurs till I saw them live, bloody amazing. So I say yes.
-
i most definitely voted yes. out of the new albums that i heard in 2004 (which isn't really very many), the arcade fire was my favorite. sometimes i find it hard to do other things while listening to some of the songs because i can get so absorbed in them. i'm desperately trying to find tickets to they're upcoming show in philadelphia so i can see them live and bask in their unbelievable awesomeness.
-
They're pretty fucking bomb. I'm just a little bummed they got so big so fast, because now I'm never gonna get to see them live. Their show at the Troubador has been sold out for like 2 months already.
-
I'm going to an Arcade Fire show! I'm so excited, I've been dying to see 'em live. Like SeanBateman said, though, tickets were hard to come by.
-
I love them !
One of my biggest 2004 surprises.
-
They do quite forthrightly rock my pocket rocket.
-
That's such a good description...
I haven't heard anything by them yet, which is upsetting, as I heard good things about them. Plus, they nearly got signed to Saddle Creek, so there's automatic respect...
-
I like funeral quite a lot, their self title, not so much.
-
I have heard Wake Up, which I liked, will defiently check up on them..
-
They remind me a lot of The Flaming Lips.
I hate the flaming lips.
-
considering i have downloaded only one song...in any case, i didn't like that song at all. the one called laika? didn't do much for me. but i'd listen to other songs to see what else they've got, they intrigue me a bit.
-
I like them... I think Power Out is probably the best on teh new CD.
-
I like Headlights look like diamonds on their self titled.
-
You didn't have an OMG FUCKING AMAZING LOL!!11!!!11one1! option...
i'm shocked anyone said no.
-

True. I saw them open for the unicorns before they released "Funeral", and I thought they were absofuckinglouty amazing. So I downloaded their album (the s/t one i think) and then thought hey, this isnt even that great. They're all about the stage energy.
-
its not faiiir!
i live in the UK! i had a hard enough time getting a hold of the album let alone see them live!
anybody willing to lend me a plane ticket?!
-
Don't really like them tbh.
-
I like them.
What do you guys think?
orgasmic.
-
I just saw them live tonight. OMG! Hoody-freakin' hoo! I'm still comin down off it. MY GF surprised me with tickets, being that i didn't even know they were coming into town. They're live show is something that must be experienced. And for now, they're still cheap-tickets!
I ran into them first a couple months ago, saw them in QC and on the cover of CMJ NMM Magazine, grabbed their album, and now I need to see them again. They played some new stuff, which was good, of course, and had some breakages, and some feedback loops. And of course, yeah, the helmets and the antics and the incredible singing!
I can't wait for more material to come out.
The first opener, Final Fantasy, is basically one of the violinists from the Arcade Fire doing tricked out kickin on his strings. He records/loops himself live, so he's got himself fresh recorded 3 or 4 times over, and hitting all the pedals, the timing.... oooh. And when AF's drummer joined him for his last song, I was then truly primed for main act.
I can't remember the name of the second act, though, but it reminded me of a cross between Tom Waits, Medeski Martin and Wood, and my friends and I screaming in a garage. It rocked too, though not much of the audience was into it.

well lucky you, they are playing london in march, the first show is sold out but there's another show on the 17th
i am seeing the arcade fire in paris, life will never be the same after that

do i like who?
-

Glad to see I'm not the only one who listens to polyphonic spree.
As for the Arcade Fire, I recently listented to some of their stuff on recommendation and have to say I loved it.
-
Can't say I care for them.
-
I saw them on their recent performance on Conan O'Brien. That was my first exposure to them, and I thought they were pretty good. I can't really form a valid opinion on the band without hearung more of their stuff, but my first impression was pretty darn good. I wasn't particularly fond of the vocals, though... I thought they might be better as a purely instrumental band.
-
You didn't have an OMG FUCKING AMAZING LOL!!11!!!11one1! option...
probably because shit like that isnt funny anymore ;]
i dunno, i think theyre overrated. theyre ok, though.
-
I had to rejuvenate this thread, as I got sent the album last week, and it's utterly addictive...they really are fantastic, I think it's the way they recreate that really unsettling, harrowing feeling the way interpol or (whisper it - muse) do...
I need to see this band live.
-
i very much enjoy them.
-
It's on my to-buy list, but haven't heard them much. If/When I buy them I'll post my opinion.
-
they are extremely fun live!
-
I bought The Arcade Fire CD after Jeph recommended it in his musical picks section and I loved it. I liked it so much I have tickets to see them in April when when they'll be playing at Coachilla.
-
i like them but the singer bugs me. so does the whole naivete of "funeral" (omg some of our relatives died it was monumental lets sing about it)

About 4 months ago I looked at Jeph's picks and I picked up "Funeral" because I had heard praise from others as well and I fell absolutely in love with it. I spin it constantly.
-
Felix, what the fuck are you doing? Is there a reason you are bumping year-old threads?
-
Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Amirite?
-
Yeah, I've never understood that on forums. You can't start a new thread if the topic's already been covered, but you can't res old threads.
-
Anyways.
Isn't this band due for a new CD? It's been at least 17 years.
-
I was under the impression that they were on a break. I'm pretty sure they're all doing separate things and getting away from the run-away famous behemoth they were.
I had a more informative post written but it devolved into a cynical commentary on society so I deleted it.
-
That's too bad (not being able to read your commentary, that is).
I hadn't heard that, though. Thanks for the clue-in.
-
I've actually read a few things on Pitchfork about how their in the recording process. Definatley going to be hard to follow up an album like Funeral.
-
Have you heard the stuff before funeral? Really lo-fi, and not nearly as awesome, by and by.
-
I mildly prefer the stuff before Funeral. Granted, the vocals got a lot better over time but on the whole I am slightly more partial to the old.
....and....I had heard rumours that their new album is supposed to be ready by May-ish next year. I cannot remember where I read that but I'll do some internetz digging and report back.
-
The way I see it, if I'm going to make a thread about one single band and/or a recent record, I might as well check and see if the band already has a thread not only so I can read it and maybe learn something from what others had to say, but so the convo will have some semblance of a foundation already existing, and so as to not clutter the forum with yet another thread about X band.
That said, The Arcade Fire are great. :) I listened to "Funeral" and their EP again last night. Brilliant stuff. I think my fave track is "Wake Up".
-
It was kind of nice to see this one re-bumped, as I thought by now everyone had got sick of them and were looking for a replacement, because talking about them's not, y'know, cool anymore.
But then I remembered that not everyone feels like that what they're saying is being edited by an innate scenester of doom in their head.
I think that what I'm trying to say is that I like the way people here talk about what they like, not what they think they should.
I think I'm struggling a tad on the making sense front today.

That makes perfect sense to me.
I'm somewhat outside of every musical genre, I'm not really part of any 'scene' or really caring what is hip, cool, or what people are talking about basically.
-
^ Hold onto that!
Exposure to scenester ways of thinking is something that happens gradually, without your awareness and then BAM! You find yourself hunting out only the most obscure bands and accusing every band of selling out if they sell more than 100 copies of a limited edition coloured vinyl.
Cherish your innocence, for it is a rare and valuable thing...

You mean they were worse before?
And Funeral was only released on a major label last year, I think, so they don't really need to bring another one out until next year.
-
I've heard from sources that they are currently working on a new album, and it will be ready sometime in 2007.
I'm very excited.

Haha...I see what you're saying. I've always held onto that 'innocence' though I suppose, even though I've always been surrounded by scenester's and elitists, and have even been accused of being one myself from time to time. For example, I'm not the type of metal fan that would go on eBay and buy a limited Mutiilation record or something for 100 dollars, or something equally silly. I listen to plenty of obscure bands and artists ranging virtually over the entirety of the musical spectrum, but I've always been happy when the bands I listen to garner some semblance of success usually and I've never accused them of 'selling out'. Well, not all of them at least.
;)
