While I am impressed with the skill and creativity some people show in modding their console and computer cases, I can't understand the motivation for it.

Well, there are contests, thats the motivation

MaximumPC Mod Contest - $1000 a month

Bawls Contest - $500 a month in 2 categories

well, yeah, and look at the price on the ebay auction.

my xbox is modded internally but nothing on the outside.

I have no cares to make my PC/Xbox look better.  I do strive to have it well cooled, small, quiet, and stupid fast.  That's far more important to me than how it looks.
