Xenon, XBox Next or XBox 2 are just some of the names, describing Microsoft's next-generation console, that you may have come across. Many industry sources are claiming now that Microsoft is planning to add to that list the name, XBox 360. The change of heart by Microsoft does not mean that the name is final but that we may see a lot more of it during the pre-launch period as Microsoft, indirectly, tests the waters with it.
One of the more entertaining stories regarding the next-generation battle has to do with Microsoft's name research for its upcoming console. Very early on Microsoft decided that it wouldn't settle for XBox 2, a name which would seem very appropriate as the console is planned to be the XBox after the first one. Microsoft, in its infinite wisdom, decided that a name with the number 2 would make its product seem inferior to its rivals, PS 3 and N5, with users believing it to be less cutting-edge than the competition. Since Microsoft's view of its consumers must be that of a rather dull money tree, the obvious choice would be to call it XBox X edging ahead of all of the competition, leaving consumers stunned and confused but impressed nonetheless. Microsoft would claim that its product numbers will always move up in tens and that would be it.
Unfortunately Microsoft decided to christen the console project Xenon, and to circulate stories regarding an XBox Next name which most found tiresome and slightly heavy on the Xs. The first time the name XBox 360 was first mentioned was last year when MS commissioned a survey to gauge consumer reaction regarding possible names. The full list of names tested was : Xbox HD, Xbox 247, Xbox E, Xbox 2, Xbox EV, Xbox 360, Xbox FS, and Xbox NE. The fact that MS seemed to prefer the 360 name however, became evident later when the same consumers were also asked which of the names, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, or Nintendo N5, they thought sounded more next-generation.
So, to recap, XBox 2 is no-go and XBox Next is history while Xenon is strictly in-house. For now we have to accept XBox 360 but consider this; if 360 degrees is a full circle would that mean that MS believes that the XBox has come full circle? Wouldn't that also suggest that the new next-gen console may share many features of the original and therefore not be that high-tech? Does Microsoft believe that the original console deserves a full circle tribute? Another possibility is that MS doesn't think its consumers to be bright enough to know how many degrees in a circle or does the 360 refer to the USD price?

I think the Sony jerks got it right well enough with their innovative "add a number to the name" system. The Nintendo people, some of whom may be jerks, also got it right with their "creativity" poppycock.
Hehehe, cock.

I could do better, if you want.
Mind you, it won't make any sense- but it will EXIST!

Personally, I think they should just call it the "Nextbox"
Flows nicely don't you think. Easier than Xbox Next. Just 2 sylables.
I say keep it to just 2 syllables (sylablas?...silly bulls?) cause apparently Microsoft doesn't think its consumer base has the intellectual capacity to handle more than that. Hell, I don't even know if I spent sylabols right.
...syla......ah....F|_|x it.

yea, well if the rumor is true, won't they have 3 names to differentiate
Maybe like NexBox, NexBox HDD, and NexBox XP or somthing
I dunno, may as well just wait and find out
though if I had a choice, I'd vote "SEXBOX" heh

To be fair, my two systems confuse my parents peabrained little minds.
I mean, they call them the X-Cube and GameBox. Come on people!

Call it the Xbox 3, just to confuse people. :)

You want to know why they call them that?
Because they hate you.
...
Yeah, my parents get them confused too.

And my parents hate you too?

Now, now. I'm sure everyone's parents hate everyone.

The X-Crate!

They should call it, "The Second Attempt By Microsoft To Milk a Market Which It Has No Business Being In" Or, in acronym form, the TSABMTMAMWIHNBBI...or, "Tis-ab-mit-mam-win-nibby"
I likes it.
-
No business being in?
Dude, it is their business.....they've been making games before Sony, and been on Computers before Nintendo....

Shit.. that really does sound a helluva lot better than "X-box 360".
Sony's got it right though. They just added a number, as opposed to spending loads on trying to get the "right" name.
Do any of you really give a rats ass about what your gaming console's called anyway?
Unless it was called "Xbox.."

The name isn't X-Box 360 nor is it Xenon. X-Box has already picked out the name of their "X-Box 2". They actually bought it (the license use) off of another company for more than the company grosses/year.

Actually, a new Megagames posting implies another name all together: HD Era
At the Game Developers Conference (GDC), Microsoft announced the first official details of its next-generation Xbox platform, highlighting how it will combine hardware, software and services in order to provide a powerful and enhanced game and entertainment experience. Read on to find out details and for an attempt at the surprise question at the end of the article; please post your answers in the comments section.
Microsoft Corporate Vice President and Chief XNA Architect J Allard further outlined the company's vision for the future of entertainment, citing the emergence of an HD Era in video games that is fueled by consumer demand for experiences that are always connected, always personalized and always in high-definition. His insistence on the term may suggest that we are heading for an XBox HD type name for the console.
In his speech, Allard mentions HD Era several times.
