Any tips on drawing girls? Other than "Take some life drawing classes"? (I'm an art school grad, had PLENTY of life drawing) Just having trouble drawing convincing female characters in a flat color vector style.
-
Girls tend to be more curvy than guys.
I'd recommend using reference but that's another way of saying take life drawing classes. Apparently giving them larger eyes makes characters appear more feminine, but it depends on what kind of style you're aiming at.
-
Man I have no idea. I have been drawing ladies pretty much every single day for two years now and am still trying to get it right.
-
Well, there are all types of girls with all sorts of features, but if you're going for a straightforward feminine look, here are some things you can do to "femme up" a character:
Thin the eyebrows.
Thicken the eyelashes.
Make the chin pointier, jaw less square.
Make the cheekbones higher and the cheeks fuller.
Make the nose smaller.
In general, the head should look a little smaller than that of the male.
Make the lips fuller.
I took the liberty of playing around with one of the male characters from your comic, so you can see what I'm talking about:

As for bodies, it's all about the curviness (particularly around the hips) and proportion. Other than that, just remember to make sure everything abides by the laws of gravity.
This is just a starting point...like I said, there are all types of girls, and they're all fun to draw. Be sure to take a look at Wapsi Square (http://wapsisquare.com/) and the Pants Press sketchblog (http://www.livejournal.com/community/pantsketch/) to see some examples of nicely drawn females.

Well, this is for Anime chicks, but still
http://www.polykarbon.com/tutorials/index.htm
Theres about 5-8 tutorials for females, from their profile to their mouth and eyes. Most of what is taught there could be taken out of the whole anime frame....
-
That does appear to be a pretty solid tutorial. Basically the best thing to do is take some of the ideas from a site like that and just draw them over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over....
-
I do this all the time, but being sneaky and drawing ladies (and men..as thats my weakness, drawing wise) whilst out and about is a good way to practise. I tend to do it on public transport or trains, in my tiny inconspicuous sketchbook. It's a good way to practise drawing the many shapes and sizes of the female figure and great for facial expressions.

But what happens after you've done that?
Do it again?
-
Then you bake a pie as fast as you can
-
no no no. we are not doing that again. i haven't gotten over the last race.
-
but i just went and grabbed my unicycle :(
-
You wear the drawing of the lady on your head like a little hat, because it looks funny.
-
It's the Lady Race
-
No one understands The Lady Race.
-
I understand the Lady Race.
-
don't come crying to me when the lady race bites you in your bottom. the first thing to understand about the lady race is that no-one understands the lady race.
-
you ride a unicycle....
the ladies love unicycles, SCIENTIFIC FACT!
-
You wear the pie on the lady because she's funny looking?
-
wah? i definatly dont understand the lady race
-
It's not for you.
-
You wear the lady on your alright, that's quite enough of that.
-
i dont think i have one of them :S
-
wait... you wear the lady on your pie because it looks like a unicycle?
i don't understand...
-
then you ride an oven round as fast as you can?
-
NONONO
don't even try to comprehend the Lady Race OR the Pie Race, for they are Far too complicated for our little minds to handle. Thinking about it too much results in spontanious combustion.
-
my feet are smouldering... and not in the good way
-
I understand the lady race a lot more than I understand what the hell's going on in this topic.
-
no one understands the lady race, its a shame really
How did we stray this far off topic?

You know Paul, drawing is very much like making love to a beatiful woman. First you lay her out on a flat surface, check the measurements, then whip out your pencil and have it. Be sure to avoid making mistakes by having a rubber handy. And when your finished, stand back and admire you handy work.
(Brits should get this reference)

Ooooh, I GET IT!
You, "lay her out on a flat surface, check the measurements, then whip out your pencil and have it. Be sure to avoid making mistakes by having a rubber handy. And when your finished, stand back and admire you handy work and then wear the lady on your head."
BECAUSE IT LOOKS FUNNY!
Thanks for clearing that one up, Socky

Swiss Tony is possibly the most smoothest man alive.
"Going to the brink of death and back, in a nine car pile-up on a dual carriage-way, is ... very much like making love to a beautiful woman. First of all, brace yourself, hold on tight - particularly if it's a rear-ender. And pray you make contact with her twin airbags as soon as possible."
-
ah, teh fast show was great. i bet swiss tony understands the lady race
-
NOBODY UNDERSTANDS THE LADY
