Spill-over from the punk thread . . . I don't think this has been a topic yet, though I couldn't be bothered to trawl through 7 pages of threads to double-check. If I'm wrong you can all bitch-slap me . . . And I know you will!
So there's your topic, right there in the subject line. My vote goes to the Waterboys live from Glastonbury in 1986, which makes up the 2nd C.D. on the "Live Adventures of the Waterboys" compilation. I'll undoubtedly think of others, but I need to get a torch and some strong rope and dive into my C.D. collection.

Oh my friend, it is ON! Of course since live albums tend to be kinda like "greatest hits albums" I don't own a whole lot, but I'll make due.
Stop Making Sense is at the top of my list, until proven otherwise. Its more then an album and video, its a total life experience. You've got the vastly superior version of Psycho Killer, there is the vast array of venerable side musicians, and above everything you've got the BIG SUIT!
My two runners up are:
10,000 Maniacs -- Unplugged
Nirvana -- Unplugged
Yes, both of these albums come from the Unplugged phenomenon that was sweeping across the country in the earlyl 90s. Yet these two bands embraced the gimmick and ran with it creating an aural experience that took the bands to the next level. I think the biggest reason I enjoy these albums so much is that both albums were put out after the band broke up/Natalie Merchant left. Both groups played with an intensity and emotion that seems to say "this is one of our last outputs as a cohesive unit and we're gonna take it to another level."
Alright, lets see your cards folks!
~~Willis, strives to own a Big Suit someday
-
Nine Inch Nails - "And All That Could Have Been"
-
Violent Femmes' Viva Wisconsin or Talking Heads' Stop Making Sense.
P.S. Both Clapton and Nirvana Unplugged are stellar.
-
I can't believe I'm so stupid and forgetful. The live album to end ALL live albums: Sam Cooke, Live at the Harlem Square Club, 1963. Otis Redding's favourite singer, and with all the hooplah surrounding Ray Charles recently the forgotten man in the birth of soul. The most exhausting, most exhilirating 37 minutes of your life: because from first note to last, you're dancing any which way you can and grinning like an idiot because you're so priveliged to be listening to this record. So there.
-
Once again, I love the Talking Heads' Stop Making Sense video. Zappa in New York, Roxy and Elsewhere, and Bongo Fury (With Captain Beefheart! YAY!) are pretty good too. And I thoroughly enjoyed Led Zeppelin's How the West was Won more than any of their actual albums. They just sound so much better live.
-
Portishead - roseland nyc live.
Beth Gibbons' voice is sex. The first time I heard tracks from it I had no idea it was live until people clapped at the end, I was baffled how she could sound that good live. Oh, and Sour Times from that is > Sour Times from Dummy.
Recap: Beth Gibbons = Sex.
-
Does it have to be a live album that's actually on the market?
-
i agree with Willis (and most others it seems..) i like Stop Making Sense...
'psycho killer, qu'est que c'est'
-
Does it have to be a live album that's actually on the market?
Interesting question. Other points to ponder: is it a live album even if there's no audience (if not I nominate the Cowbody Junkies' Trinity Sessions - recorded live and without overdubs, as far as I'm aware, in a church in Toronto); and does a live album have to be of a single show (if not, then the Clash's From Here to Eternity - a seamless compilation of live songs from numerous concerts).
I'd answer these questions, except it's a Saturday and I don't think on Saturdays. Debate amongst yourselves.
-
Ancient Rites-And the Hordes Stood as One
or
Mayhem-Live in Leipzig
or
Iron Maiden-A Real Live Dead One
...and probably some more I can't think of right now.
-
Hmmm. i suppose I'll just go with Mike Doughty - Smofe and Smang
-
I don't own many live albums (nor have I heard any that I don't own, really); so I'm gonna just go with "And the band played on: Live at home" by Ann Beretta. The version of "Fire in the Hole" as a three piece is a lot better than the original recording as a four-piece (mainly because I like Robbie's voice a hell of a lot more than Leer's...), theres entertaining banter by the band and audience ("I've had these same pants on for 54 shows and 54 nights, so tonight I get to retire them tonight! Yeah! ...what was that?" "PLEASE, CHANGE YOUR FUCKING PANTS."). Anyways, great energy, some of my favorite songs, great sound quality...
oh, and it's out of print now apparantly. Add an inch to my rare-album nerd penis.
-
Live Set by the Frames.
-
Jeff Buckley - Live at Sin-E...
So gorgeous...
-
I like my NIN - Solid Gold Hell bootleg, from their 1991 tour. The live versions of PHM songs kick the ass of the studio versions. And there’s a pre-Broken version of "Wish" with much cooler drumming and extra lyrics.
-
my most favourite live album is probably the Grateful Dead- Dead Set. Old school, I know, but it's just so sweet. Others include Soulive: Live in NYC and MAYBE Portishead: Live at the Roseland. Come to think of it, I just don't have that many live albums in my moozak collection...
-
Jimi Hendrix - Band of Gypsies (Best Song - Machine Gun)
No idea when it was recorded, or where. Just saw it in some dudes Soulseek shared folder.
-
Well, there's a couple...
Cream - Farewell Concerts
Mountain - Live
Rage Against The Machine - Live At The GOA
Pink Floyd - Pulse
Pink Floyd - Ummagumma (disc 2)
-
pink floyd are the devil
pure eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeevil!!!!
anyways, id go with my bootleg recording of colin meloy live at schubas tavern,
-
What on EARTH could you have against Pink Floyd?
No really? What? You dislike them entirely? All their periods and albums?
-
they are an AWESOME band
-
bah, i cant explain it, ive just never enjoyed their music. its not that im afraid of slightly experimental stuff, i like "do may say think" for gods sake...
-
no, you must explain it, or the music police shall come and poke you with sticks and play 'The Piper At the Gates of Dawn' at you over and over again.
-
YES!!!!! THE MUSIC POLICE!!!!! explain you actions
-
damn you muic police and your pink floyd loving devilry
I WILL NO FALTER, pink-floyd-are-shit
-
DIE NOW INFIDEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
The music police are displeased with you, Mr. ASturge.
To the gulags with you, where you shall be forced to mine vinyl in the dreaded trans-siberian vinyl mines and carve out split 7"s with a toothpick.
-
Nine Inch Nails - "And All That Could Have Been"
That and the new boots from Fresno. Very nice.
-
Big Black-Pig Pile
The Cure-Paris
The Clash-On Broadway
-
Guns 'n' Roses - Live Era '87 - '93
:)
Count
-
Gowan - Au Quebec
Okay, just kidding. I honestly have no clue.
-
I am afraid, my friends, that I have been trying to get ASturge to like Pink Floyd for 6 months now. HE REPENTED DARK SIDE, THE BASTARD!
Yeah, that's his one musical taste fault, along with his fetish for 'Mmmbop' by Hanson. Poor boy.
-
I have 2 that I just love to death-
IRON MAIDEN - Rock In Rio
MEGADETH - Rude Awakening
-
Yeah, that's his one musical taste fault, along with his fetish for 'Mmmbop' by Hanson. Poor boy.
Years ago, my brother bought a copy of the single of 'Mmmbop' because it was on sale. He was not in the slightest bit a Hanson fan. "Sure" I asked him, "but why did you buy a copy of 'Mmmbop', of all things?" "Because it was cheap" he replied. "Yes" I said, "but it's still 'Mmmbop'." "Oh, yeah. I guess so." Always remember: a sale item may be cheap, but it's not as cheap as not buying the damn thing in the first place.
-
Always remember: a sale item may be cheap, but it's not as cheap as not buying the damn thing in the first place.
Tell that to my ex. ;)
-
easily, and for a number of reasons(production values, etc.), my fav is the recent live skinny puppy album: Back & Forth Vol. 5: Doomsday, Live in Dresden. everyone really needs to hear the live version of 'killing game' from that disc.
-
nobody mentioned Metallicas "S&M". That is one beautiful concert. The power of metal and classical put together is so cool. Also another favourite is Nirvana Unplugged. Wich is even cooler because on some of the songs The Meat Puppets guest apperes.
-

that song is good!!!!!
why cant you crazy assed mofos except that!!??!
-
Yeah... Now'd be the time to shut up dude...
-
My avatar may already speak for me, but I'm definitely going with Coheed and Cambria: Live at the Starland Ballroom.
-
Roy Orbison - Black & White Night
The Band - The Last Waltz
I like the Waterboys, I should check out this CD of which you speak.
damn you muic police and your pink floyd loving devilry
I WILL NO FALTER, pink-floyd-are-shit
I'm with him. Pink Floyd can slarve my dode.
-
^ Mnementh, you dont know how much that means to me

I like the Waterboys, I should check out this CD of which you speak.
Do, among other delectable treats it's got an awesome version of "Old England" on it.
-
.... Is it really possible to not like Pink Floyd? I mean, some of the stuff they produced (Momentary Lapse of Reason, I'm glaring at you.) wasn't too good, but they've made some amazing music.
-
I like Momentary Lapse of Reason
and technically, that wasnt Pink Floyd, that was after Roger Waters left, and did you know he sued them for Using the name Pink FLoyd after he left?
-
Five Iron Frenzy - The End Is Here is definitely my favorite. Because it's a recording of the last show they ever did, and they planned it that way, they put everything they had into it. The 10-minute medley near the end is inredible, but my absolute favorite is the ending of Every New Day, the last song they played. It's just mind-blowing.
-
The Toadies - Live from Paradise. These guys rock live.
the Smashing Pumpkins - Earphoria.
It's sort of live. They have them playing acoustic versions of their Siamese Dreams songs and other things. I think there is also a live version of Geek U.S.A. on it as well, but I may be mixing it up with either the VHS of the Greatest Hits DVD.
the Pixies - Death to the Pixies (Disc 2)
It's the Pixies. The songs are rawer which livens up their later stuff.
I don't have many live albums. I have some live bootleg mp3s. Some PJ Harvey, her stuff isn't that different then the albums, Smashing Pumpkins, lots of HUM, the live intro to Afternoon with the Axoltols is amazing too bad they didn't put it on the album.
-
The Name of this Band is Talking Heads.
-
emperor - emperial live ceremony
-
the vandals- sweating to the oldies
bad religion- tested
johnny cash- live at san quentin and/or folsom (i've only heard a few tunes from both, and i'm not sure what came from where)
i forgot live at the roxy, social distortion.
-
Dire Straits, 'Alchemy' <3 :o
-
If I had to pick an absolute favorite, I'd have to go with DJ Shadow: In Tune and On Time. Otherwise, my top 5 would be
The aforementioned DJ Shadow
NIN - And All That Could Have Been
311 - Live
Portishead - Live at Roseland NYC
Rammstein - Live aus Berlin
-
Unplugged has been mentioned a bunch of times but it is still one of my favorites. I also have 3 favorite live songs: "Like Spinning Plates" is beautiful live (I actually heard my brother playing it on the piano long before I listened to Radiohead), "Hyper-Ballad" from Bjork's live Post thing is nice, and "The Last Polka" on Ben Folds Live is my current favorite song.
-
i don't know if anyone mentioned it, but my favourite is still "no sleep 'til hammersmith" by motörhead
-
If I could, I would get one of those live CDs the Pixies had at each concert during their one tour recently.
-
Easily,
Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison
Jay-Z's Unplugged
Otis Redding In Person at the Whisky-A-Go-Go
My Morning Jacket Acoustic Citsuoca
-

I only really get down with the Syd Barret era stuff. A lot of Alan Parson's production work is great, but a lot of the songs get too self-indulgent. I dunno I've never been a big fan of "prog-rock".
-
I Might Be Wrong: Live Recordings by Radiohead is awesome.
I really like the Dillinger 4 live bootleg, mostly for the banter, cause the sound quality is crap.
there are others, but i can't really think of them right now.

Otis Redding In Person at the Whisky-A-Go-Go
You should definitely check out the Sam Cooke album I mentioned earlier. Otis Redding's Whisky-A-Go-Go album is often regarded as his equivalent to the Sam Cooke recording, but fine as Redding's album is Cooke's is a million times better. Cooke, incidentally, was Redding's favourite singer.
-
Coldplay - Live 2003
sends shivers up my spine every time.
-
Coldplay?!
I'm going to go and sob quietly in the corner. Next up somebody's going to nominate Morrissey. My thread, my beautiful thread!
(Don't worry, everybody has their musical weaknesses. I'm sure everything else you listen to is great!)
-
VIVA - Roxy Music. Because no one else will serenade my blow up doll...
-
Ramones - "It's Alive"
The best live album ever. My favorite album of all time.
-
Frampton comes Alive
-
Coldplay?!

Hahah, SWEET! I was waiting for this post! You win a prize. Of... something. =P
I know, Coldplay is definitely a weakness. I think it's perhaps the memories all tied in over the years to their songs. Especially that album in particular.
Give me a live album by Stars, or Metric, though, and that would be top notch!
-
Metric would be amazing.
-
others:
daft punk - Alive (it's all one track! there's rhythmic whistling! daft punk are jesus!)
it's not a whole cd, but i really really like the live version of "Halcyon + On + On" by Orbital, especially the part where they throw in "You Give Love A Bad Name" and "Heaven" and then get all crazy in respect to them. mmm Orbital.
(do i suck for liking live techno?)

-
The Roots Come Alive
JayZ Unplugged (Feat. The Roots...seeing a theme here?)
The Pietasters are Strapped Live!
Iron Maiden Rock In Rio (when the crowd starts singing along to Fear of the Dark...oh man)
pg99/Waifle split Live Album
-
Metric would be amazing.
Absolutely. I'm tempted to go to their show in Vancouver on the 7th, but I don't think it's going to happen, as I have no one to drag along to the show with me. =/
-

Oh, no doubt. I downloaded it once I saw you mention it and have since fully ingested it.
Notable mention is James Brown's Live at the Apollo.
-
Just thought of another couple - about 10 years ago when Deborah Conway (Aussie singer-songwriter) released her album "Bitch Epic", a limited-edition version was released with a second C.D. called "Epic Theatre", which was recorded live in Melbourne. It's one of my favourite C.D.s.
And for folkies, Christy Moore's recording "At the Point - Live" is an absolute classic. That man knows how to work an audience.
-
I think NoFX's I Heard They Suck Live might win for best title, though.
-
Dream Theatre Live is amazing.
Also, Some Kind Of Monster by Metallica is very good.
-
Because of my sheer, unadulterated hero worship of Jeff Mangum, Live at Jittery Joe's has to get the nod from me.
-
Rush In Rio (both DVD and album)
Primus - Live at the Greek Theater (d/led it off of PrimusLive.com, great show with a "La Villa Strangiato" cover")
Led Zepplin - How The West Was Won
Les Claypool's Frog Brigade - Live Frogs 1
Yes - Extended Versions (includes a great version of Siberian Kathru)
-
Ramones - "It's Alive"
The best live album ever. My favorite album of all time.
Much as I love that record, I think MC5 - 'Kick Out The Jams' just beats it.
-
Social D - live at the roxy
-
I have to agree with both of the Talking Heads ones - The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads and Stop Making Sense - and Jeff Buckley's Live at Sin-e.
-
I'm not that original, my favorites have already been mentioned:
Johnny Cash - At Folsom Prison
Motorhead - No Sleep 'til Hammersmith
But there's also:
Sheer Terror - Live at CBGB
Life of Agony - River Runs Again
-
waiting for columbus - little feat live in the 70's
i was listening to it while making dinner last weekend and it got me, i mean GOT me
'time loves a hero' is a song which could not be any truer to life
-
Inlander, you apear to have exceptional taste, so I shall also seak out the Waterboys album.
The Cowboy Junkies and 10,000 Maniacs albums mentioned above are both great. Others worth checking out are:
Runrig - Day of Days
Cowboy Junkies - 200 More Miles (except for an over-long intro)
Levellers - Headlights
-
mmm Orbital.
(do i suck for liking live techno?)
In my book, No. Orbital = yummy.
-
I have to agree with both of the Talking Heads ones - The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads and Stop Making Sense - and Jeff Buckley's Live at Sin-e.
Good person. ;-)
-
The new Hundred Reasons live bootleg. I have been having a sexual relationship with this band for the past 3 years and i think their live show is astonishing.
