Whod'a thunk it, standing at the checkout line of the grocery store and there they are, the Arcade Fire in all their glory on the cover ot Time Canadian Edition. Not only that, but they have a big article on indie-rock in there.
Not only that, but they were also nominated for a Juno Award. For all you non-Canadians out there, it is basically a smaller, less prestegious and musically inclined Grammy.
Still, a big thing for a band whose album has sold but 200,000 copies in North America huh?
I am finding out there there is more to the music scene here in Vancouver too.....its bloody amazing.
-
Yum yum yum Vancouver. There are some fantastic shows coming up in the next month and a half... if only I were rich!
Who else was featured in the article?
-

Impossible! Nothing is less prestigious than a Grammy! :D
So Arcade Fire's getting serious mainstream attention, huh?
*waits for calls of "The Arcade Fire are sellouts!" in 5... 4... 3...*

i think the arcade fire were nominated for best alternative album, but it was feist who won.
both groups are amazingly good.
-
Not so sure about Feist - I love Mushaboom, but some of the other stuff seemed too...gentle.
Also, there's a huge feature on TAF in NME this week, which made me happy as I settled down for my weekly ritual of sitting down and shouting at the paper in the hopes it will improve itself.
However, they did print a picture of the Queenz of Noizzzzze topless, which kind of ruined the whole thing for me.

The article also features:
Stars, Metric, The Organ, DFA 1979. The Dears.
An essay by Brendan Canning about Canadian Indie.
A small article about Arts & Crafts.
And blurbs about: Black Mountain, Controller.Controller, Broken Social Scene, The New Pornographers, Caribou (formerlly Manitoba), P:ano, and Wolf Parade.
I think I got them all. Worth checking out.
-
yes, but I havent gotten that far yet......
Actually come to mention it, I havent even read all the article about tAF yet.
-

WHY HAVEN'T I SEEN THIS ANYWHERE

i haven't heard of them in forever! i saw them as an opener for the opener of a show awhile ago (they opened for sons & daughters who opened for franz ferdinand...i was just talking about this in another thread, how cosmic). i think they were pretty good, but i haven't heard anything of them since. they're canadian?
-
Heeeey, another Vancouverite.
Yeah, I clicked on to the Juno's too late to see if they won anything. It was Feist who won for best Alternative album though, eh? Not our beloved Arcade Fire.

Yes indeed, from Toronto I believe. We spawn many a good band. I've seen them twice now, both times as openers, and both times they rocked. In fact, last time I saw them was in October with the Organ and they blew me away, the Organ was a giant letdown after. They sucked.
Have you heard their album?

WE HAVE A COPY IN THE LIBRARY FOR CHRISTSSAKE!

Yup, another Vancouverite here
Tried to catch a Black Mountain show, but they were sold out by the time I got time to get tickets
I was very sad.
-
I'd be lying if I said I was never jealous of you Vancouver dwellers and your cool scene; Toronto is great, but after a while it's just Toronto.
Frog Eyes? Young and Sexy? The New Pornographers? Destroyer? A.C. Newman? P:ano? To a lesser extent The Organ? You guys have it good.
Who else have you got over there? What secrets don't I know about?
-
WE HAVE A COPY IN THE LIBRARY FOR CHRISTSSAKE!
OH
MAYBE I'LL CHECK IT OUT TOMORROW
IF'N I'M NOT BUSY
Also you Toronto bastards and Vancouver bastards is lucky. I live in Regina. Hello, cookie-cutter emo, I'm not your biggest fan.
p.s. controller.controller are rock, I'm going to see them with DFA1979 on Saturday.
-
Yes indeed, from Toronto I believe.
No band from Toronto would ever put a french song on their album. They're from Montreal, of course.
-
I saw the magazine in the waiting room at my eye appointment yesterday. I looked and was like...the arcade fire? Here?
Didn't have time to read it or anything though, I had just picked it up when I had to go get those goddamned pupil dilation drops in my eyes.

Really? I always thought Toronto.
newmusiccanada.com says Toronto.
p.s. we're talking about Controller.Controller not the Arcade Fire.

Hey, I suffered for 19 years in Saskatoon, I feel your pain Johnny C.
I don't live in Vancouver, but I'm just over on the island, so I find myself crashing on my friends couch in downtown Van whenever I can scrounge up the spare cash to head over.
-
Enyaw - I am a silly, silly person. Carry on.
-
Honest mistake :)
-
The Junos are basically a reminder of how lame Canada's pop scene is. Avril Lavigne...Sum 41...mmmm....
-
Have you heard their album?
not yet. actually at the moment i'm having a hard time remember what controller.controller sound like...aren't they kind of dancy bass-driven stuff? the lead singer was awesome, though, i definitely remember that.
-
hehe

That's pretty much it. Like a darker Metric sort of.

Holy on a damned minute...did you just list Great Big Sea first, ahead of a slew of way more talented and interesting bands and artists? I'm speechless.
-
hey!
Great Big Sea had/has a wonderful unique sound. I quite enjoy their music.
