Post by: yipjumpmusic on 07 Apr 2005, 06:02
For those not hording their local bands, please post links to your favorite ones here.  I'll start and end if no one else posts another band.  What do you mean I'm cynical!?

San Diego-Bunky (may be slightly known as they are on sufjan stevens label now and have opened for Pinback but for those that don't know them...)  Check out Bunky and the two main people's individual efforts.  I especially love Rafter's How Bout U Dad.

Basolutely none of my liked local bands seem to have websites :(

I am heavily partial to the musings of Overlord to give you a flavour, their cd gives their lineup thus:

Lucky Larry -  Forked Tongue Vocal Ordnance
The Baron - Guitar Delusions
Charrrr - Fuzzed-up Six-String Diabolism
Jess - Low-End Drone
Mike The Failure (the Elephant Man) - Soviet Drum Horror

They play insanely loud, slow and sludgy doom metal. Their lyrical themes (they do concept EPs) are Eastern European prostitution and Misanthropy. They do two covers: 'Girls Aloud-Sound of the Underground' and 'Anal Cunt-Dead, Gay and Dropped'.

Also rocking my world are their sister band Syrafex, with their dual male/female screaming sludge assault.

If you like sludgy metal, give these guys a go: Agent of the Morai (http://www.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewProfile&friendID=12252318&Mytoken=20050407061956) - Iron Monkey style stonery sludge business.

We do pretty well for local bands:

The Pipettes
Clearlake
Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster I know everyone here seems to think they're annoying scenesters, but they are lovely and I will not hear a bad word spoken about them.
Electrelane (though one of them's now in Prague, and another one's in the states now)
Miss Pain (who have graffittied every toilet in brighton - no mean feat)
Star Scream (mate's  band, they've supported Rachel Stamp I think, really really good)
Brakes (best band in the world ever, with Eamon from BSP)
The Tenderfoot
Electric Soft Parade

Teasing Lulu
and...
BRITISH SEA POWER.

Brighton's cool.

I quite like a bit of Eighties Matchbox myself, they have some catchy tunes. I saw Projections from down Brighton way last night, ex-Cat On Form and very good. And I have a feeling Pool Cleaner might be from there too, and they blew me away. Fantastic improvisations.

Heres some of may faves. Mainly valley folk, one LA. I have to mention the LA band cause I worked with them for over a yr and they rock :)

Virgil (http://www.virgilmusic.com) LA goodness
UVR (http://www.u-v-r.com) Tracy goodness
Honeyspot (http://www.honeyspotmusic.com) Sacramento goodness (another one I worked with, though not as good as Virgil ;))
Flying Blind (http://www.flyingblind.net) Modesto goodness that moved to LA (you might have heard them on the American Pie 2 sound track. No? I doubted you had too)
Transport (http://www.transportmusic.com) I forget where they are from goodness (can also be found on myspace)
Megan Slankard (http://www.meganslankard.com) Tracy goodness (buy her CDs on Amazon!)
Grandaddy (http://www.grandaddylandscape.com) Modesto goodness that has hit it well (yes I saw/heard them before you! bwahahaha!)

Also worth mentioning (and too lazy to look up for you):
Willknots (they went poof from the net... not sure what happened there)
Hollopoynt
Vegas De Milo
Waterneck (broken up, but not forgotten)

eddited for neatness :)

Deathamphetamine - Wicked awesome death metal/grind.  I think if these guys can get on a label they could become quite popular with the underground/extreme metal folks.  Also, they are some really nice guys.

http://www.freewebs.com/northernaggression/bios.htm
Northern Aggression - Bluegrass.  Fun bluegrass.

Those are both awesome UMass bands.  Wasteland is great too, but I know little of them, the one time I saw them I was impressed.

Those are a good list of Leeds band, but you've forgotten Fig 4.0!

which is quite frankly shocking.

Ah, Fig 4.0. Never far from my mind. But they didn't have a website after their first guitarist left since he was the one that maintained it, and I thought it might be a bit pointless to list a defunct band it would be damn hard fpr the uninitiated to hear. I left off Canvas too, another local legend. Lost In Rock is a genuine classic. That reminds me, people should check out Tigers! (ex-Canvas screamy hardcore sassyness) here (http://www.chinchillaweb.co.uk/chinchillaweb_sounds.htm)

I'm not as well versed on my local scene as I was in the 90's. I just don't live in the clubs anymore :( However, this is my current favorite San Diego band

Goodbye Blue Monday

And I guess I'll say Pinback too, cause I just started getting way into them.

And while I'm at it, I'm gonna put Scarlet Symphony on the list too. I've only ever heard 2 of their songs, and I'm just way behind the bandwagon on this, but this is one of those bands you know you're gonna love. In fact, it looks like their cd is now orderable on their site, so I shall purchase one post haste.

Not only are these just good local bands, but also good friends of mine:

Awesome Car Funmaker (http://www.awesomecarfunmaker.com/)
They just recently finished producing their first EP with Garbage drummer, Butch Vig.  "We play music.  We play dance-able, rock-able, throw yourself on the floor and flail around-able music."  They have mp3s for download on the site.

The Pipe Circus (http://www.pipecircus.com/)
Gotta respect the Sax-a-boom. :)  Very funky with bongos and a sax.  They are extremely high energy at their live shows.  They remind me a lot of Little Blue Crunchy Things (another local band that has since broken up but a little more success nation-wide).

Oh, you NEED to see one of their own shows. Its seriously a awesome experience. Assuming you go when there in their home town and surrounding area theres tons of ppl who know when to clap and get all excited and dancin and stuff. Fun times. I missed the Ted Leo show so I can only imagine that most ppl were there for him and not the junciton (which makes sense :) )

I think i remember something along those lines happening. Fun times!
The best was the first stop of the white light rock and roll tour was in Grand Bend and my grandmother's cottage is near there so i decided to go. The only trick was there was a tornado the day before that wrecked a few homes a couple towns over. The show was at the Motorplex which is outside and soon as they were gettin ready the sky went nuts, it started pouring and the wind was so strong. they said they'd be delaying for a while and in the distance you could see a funnel cloud!! It was nuts. So i drove back to the cottage (which was a scary drive) and then came back when it settled down. They came on a played an awesome set including the new secret song which is a really country sounding track that seemed reall appropriate at a motorplex!!
Crazy night!

OH MAN! I remember that! My friend got caught in that tornado and couldn't go to see the show, he was fucking crushed. He finally saw Matt Good for the first time after like like 7 years of being a fan! He was the crazy tall kid dancing like mad. My other friend was the guy with the huge mohawk. I know it was a while ago, but still felt like its worth mentioning.

Since I don't consider Brooklyn my actual home I'll have to go with DC/MD as my "local" scene cause it's where I grew up.

Medic - Ex-members of the fucking best hardcore band ever, De Nada, bring the jams again with this brutal squad of thrash-ninjas. As far as I know they don't have a website...but if you're in the area or are gonna be sometime peep pheer.com for shows.

Haram (http://www.harammusic.com) - Ex-MajorityRule, pg99, etc. They're kinda like grunge...but good grunge. Not Soundgarden or some bullshit. They're on tour right now so check them out.

The Ready Steady Go! (http://www.rudeindc.com/rsg) - Ultra-cool mod rock/ska for fans of Elvis Costello, the Specials or Burial. Definitely a sweet band to see live, bring your dancing shoes.

Ummm, there are tons more I want to say, a lot of whom are now defunct. But yeah, there you go for now.

I'll have to check out Bunky and Goodbye Blue Monday but I believe I saw Scarlet Symphony play at the 2003 SD music awards at Humphrey's By the Bay though I could be mistaken.

As for my local selections...  Rocket from the Crypt has been around for ages and they're a bit to heavy metal to be my favorite but they're not bad and they're a local music institution.  Switchfoot has a real early 90's alternative type sound which I dig but sometimes they let that whole Christian thing seep into there music to much; still they're a very talented band.  Satisfaction & Reeve Oliver are about as EMO as a band can get but I like their Beatles-eque sounds.  I read an article about the lead guitarist formerly was in Dogwood and decided to give Satisfaction & Reeve Oliver a try because I liked Dogwood before they broke up.  There worth the money to go see.

Grace, I saw Little Birdy and Eskimo Joe, both live at Melville Youth Festival last year (or was is the year before?) and yes, they are very good, and better live, definitely.
My opinion is that Eskimo Joe sounded more betterer (is that a word) than Little Birdy do, but then, I like their music better anyway.

Did you say in another post somewhere that you're in a band yourself?

Oh, and my $0.02: halogen (http://www.halogenworld.com), another perth band, quite nice.

Doris Henson is an amazing KC area band. Think Bowie, GVB, Talking Heads, and Neutral Milk Hotel. I have a feeling i'm going to say "i've seen them play to about 15 people in a dive bar, and now i can't get a ticket" They are about to tour too, check 'em out.

OK, I'm leaving in about 20 minutes to go check this band out.  I'll have a report when I come back.  ;)

you forgot Via Satellite! [i'm not from SD, but i love VS]

Ah, yes, Via Sateillite is pretty good. I saw them at The Casbah once i believe.

The Singer for Reeve Oliver (Sean O'Donnell) Sings solo at the bar I go to every monday. I definitly prefer him solo over the reeve oliver stuff.

Another SD band I really dig that I forgot to mention is Square Circle. Really funky electronica/hip hoppy stuff, definitly worth checking out.

Not technically local, but.... Devil Sold His Soul, Hardcore stuff.

I claim local because the bass player is my mate, and he's on my Physics course and in the same halls as me at uni.

Caprice* - Pop-Punk very fun to listen to.  I've known two of the guys since kindergarten, and one of them since middle school. All are very cool kids.

Kodiak Arrest - Pop-Punk as well, I know a couple guys in there who are really cool.

Skapegoat - Hardcore, our best local band.  Really talented.

The Adventures of Miles Hatchett and the Phunk Phiends - Category?  No idea they are just INSANE.  Two of my friends are in there and they are some wacky kids.

Altermind - Same two of my friends are in this band from Miles Hatchett.  This band is pretty crazy too, although more subdued.

The Features (http://www.thefeatures.com): album just came out on Universal, GO BUY IT.  it'll rock your ass... or at least go to the website and watch the video for "a million ways to sing the blues".  the guitar hook will make you dance your ass off.

Imaginary Baseball League (http://www.imaginarybaseball.com): Great band.  just great stuff.

Slack (http://www.slackattack.net): just got signed to Century Media... balls-out rock.

um.. and a bunch of other bands.  hey here's mine (http://www.myspace.com/belize).

Movement: http://www.movement1.com/

They've got a few pretty nice mp3 tracks on that website, check it out. I've seen them live a few times and they did really well in my opinion. They're a million times louder live as well, I might add.

Providence!

Black Forest Black Sea (http://www.secreteye.org/b/) - A "freefolk" band with processed cello and guitar, really pretty vocals, interesting use of noise.  Local heroes, I tells ya, and deservedly so.

Lucky Dragons (http://hawksandsparrows.org/) - Really great electro.  His releases aren't quite up to par with his amazing live performances, but are pretty damned stellar nonetheless.

Urdog (http://www.urdog.com/) - Nifty organ-driven psych.

Also, I could not let this thread pass without plugging two bands I play in:

Get Him Eat Him (http://www.gethimeathim.com/) - New wave-y indie rock, I guess.  We're on Absolutely Kosher (http://www.absolutelykosher.com) and play a buncha shows.

Lame Drivers (http://www.lamedrivers.com/) - Awesome rock and roll songs.  I play drums (poorly).

I am hesitant to post, since many here do not like the type of rock that I often listen to, but here I go anyways.

The Sound and the Fury (http://www.thesoundandthefury.com/)

They were local, but now they're regional, and it would not be a surprise if they were to go national here in the next few years.  They play good ole' hard rock music, with a slight touch of folk and blues to some of their songs.

Moniker (http://www.wearemoniker.com/)

Similer in style to TSatF, though they are a younger band.  They also seem to draw a bit more influence from Pearl Jam and Stone Temple Pilots style of bands, but that is not all they are restricted to.  If they stick through the rough first few years, they just might be able to make it big.  They definitely have the talent.

The Lonely (http://www.whatwaslost.com/)

Even compared to my previous listings, these guys are pretty dang hard.  They have a more industrial/techno sound.  To get an impression of their sound, imagine a band with elements of Orgy, Nine Inch Nails, Manson, and Skinny Puppy.  I know the majority of you here probably won't be able to stand to even listen them, but for the minority of you that like the harder stuff, you just might enjoy this.

There is only one local band I actually listen to. Just released their first album, which I might add is stellar. For two of the songs go here: http://www.purevolume.com/subrosaca

They don't seem to update their website much, but it seems a new one is in progress: http://www.subrosatheband.com/

And I might add their name i suppose, Subrosa

Wow. A band that has a member who can't tune his guitar properly. Maybe you should get a pitch pipe or a tuner, works wonders.

I've been listening to a bunch of Three Mile Pilot (http://www.epitonic.com/artists/threemilepilot.html) which is a great band out of San Diego.

Mia Doi Todd isn't exactly local (she's a Vietnamese American from LA who married a white guy thus here unusual name) but I really like her Come Out of Your Mine album is really good.  Download her "Digital, version 2.2" HERE (http://www.epitonic.com/artists/miadoitodd.html).

Here's my friends band:

Awesome Car Funmaker (http://www.awesomecarfunmaker.com/)

I've mentioned them before, but I figured I'd bring it up again.  They will be going on a tour in New England and Canada coming up.  I'll urge you to check them out if they come around.  They are a very high energy band when playing live and will have an EP coming out very soon as well.

Welllllll... ... technically Sum 41 is local, but I'm not even gonna go there...

For sures it has to be Protest The Hero... they're a politically driven hardcore punk band from Whitby Ontario... ... which is about as local as it gets for me...

They've got a 7" (Search For The Truth, i think) out, as well as an EP (A Calculated Use of Sound), and they have an album coming out this summer apparently... kick ass music
