Have any of you ever heard cover songs that you liked better than the original versions?
For me, it's two Helloween songs, I Want Out and I'm Alive.
I heard the covers (By Sonata Arctica and Luca Turilli, respectively) before I knew they were covers, so of course, when I found out I had to seek out the originals. But I must say, I was dissapointed. They just didn't measure up to the covers. In my oppinion, they were quite bland in compairison.
Though, credit where credit's due, both songs have great lyrics.
-
Johnny Cash's "Hurt" > NIN's "Hurt."
-
Vehemently disagree.
-
Usually, whichever version of a song I hear first becomes my favorite...except in those happy cases where I like the cover and the original equally for different reasons.
-
Vehemently disagree.
Mind elaborating on that a bit more?
I'm not going to argue with you, I'm just interested.
-
Pretty much anything from Dynamite With A Laserbeam. It's a load of 31G-related bands doing Queen covers, about half of which are unrecognisable. Melt-Banana's annihilation of We Will Rock You and The Oath battering We Are The Champions into submission are particular highlights.
-
i've always been partial to oasis's version of "i am the walrus" versus the original. i just like louder guitars.
-
While I have to give it up to Johnny for having more actual feeling in his version than the Rez (angst-tastic), I guess I just don't like the feel as much. I guess I lean more towards the industrial sound on this one because the music itself on Rez's version seems to convey the real feeling where his lyrics don't completely cover. Slightly detuned guitar, creepy white noise... the imagery I get when listening to it just seems so much more hopeless, kinda like silent hill in "evil nighttime mode" type scenery. For Cash, it feels like a cowboy on his horse walking into a dark sunset after he didnt save the day. (which is appropriate for what he was goin for.)
But like I said, it's preference. If you want raw feeling and the simple rhythm then I completely understand going with Cash, but NIN's version seems more well rounded and in the right key for what I got out of the song.
Didn't mean to sound like a prick with the short answer before.
-
the Replicants' version of Silly Love Songs is awesome.
-
Lou Barlow covering Round N' Round is WAY better than the RATT original.
Jimi Hendrix covering All Along the Watchtower is better than Bob Dylan's original.
The Decemberists covering Bridges and Balloons is SLIGHTLY better than Joanna Newsom's original... but that one's pretty close.
Yo La Tengo's cover of Do Ya Think I'm Sexy? is better than the original by Rod Stewart.
:)
-
You know the cover is better when the original artist starts playing it the way it was covered. |mL is for Hendrix
-
gary jules version of 'mad world' is infinately better than the tears for fears version
-
Sheer Terror's "Boys Don't Cry" eviscerates the Cure's.
-
Yo La Tengo's cover of Do Ya Think I'm Sexy? is better than the original by Rod Stewart.
:)
The Revolting Cocks' version is the best of all. :D
-
gary jules version of 'mad world' is infinately better than the tears for fears version
Seconded. And thirded too for emphasis. ;)
-
cake - i will survive
johnny cash - hurt
-
Damn right.
-
Big Black covering Heartbeat by Wire. Their cover of The Model by Kraftwerk is darn close to being as good as the original but does not surpass it.
-
Cradle of Filth-For Those Who Died (Not a strict cover, as it involves a duet between Dani Filth and Martin Walkyier, Sabbat's original vocalist, but damn is it awesome.)
Similiarly, though it amounts to heresy, Cradle of Filth-Hallowed Be Thy Name . Screaming works better as a vocal style for the song, and the production on the original hasn't aged well: CoF make it rock as hard as it should.
Entombed-The Ballad of Hollis Brown. Very few Dylan covers work. None as well as this.
Dimmu Borgir-Burn in Hell This cover is just cheeky and brilliant. You can tell everyone was having a shitload of fun doing it, and the way Shagrath clears his throat politely before screaming 'YOUR GONNA BURN IN HELL!' is simply inspired.
Johnny Cash-Hurt I simply don't like subdued music. The NIN version sounds like it's got a duvet over half of it. I no likey.
Due to my musical tastes, pretty much every decent metal cover of a soft rock or pop song will be liked by me more than the original. This includes Amorphis-Light My Fire, Graveworm-Losing My Religion and Overlord-Sound of the Underground, but disregards both Turisas' and Star One's attempts to cover 'Space Oddity'. Both are good, but neither tries to be different enough to be better.
-

Yeah, I'd call that fucking heresy. "Hallowed Be Thy Name" is my favorite Iron Maiden song, hands down.
-
I'm frankly amazed that this thread has gotten this far without any nods to Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah. Depending on my mood, I might or might not prefer Iron & Wine's Such Great Heights. And screw my avatar, I can't not mention Guns 'n Roses' Live and Let Die.
-
Yeah, I'd call that fucking heresy. "Hallowed Be Thy Name" is my favorite Iron Maiden song, hands down.
Never seen it myself...of course, I heard Cradles version before Maiden's, so that's probably got something to do with it. Maiden's version seemed to lack punch afterwards. Tbh, I often find I like Maiden covers with growly vocals as much or more than the original: Aces High remains immune despite competent assaults from Arch Enemy and Children of Bodom, but I'll come out and admit that I probably prefer Dark Tranquillity's version of 22. Acacia Avenue. Again I gotta say though, production's a huge part of this: live, Maiden's versions must kick ass.
-
I'm frankly amazed that this thread has gotten this far without any nods to Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah.
Despite the fact that he omits my favorite verse, I'm inclined to agree. I'll also add Bruce Springsteen's cover of "Jersey Girl" to the list. And I'm tempted to state the obvious Dylan covers - The Byrds' "Mr. Tamborine Man" and Hendrix's "All Along the Watchtower" - no matter how much I love the originals.
-
Iron Maiden + Nightwish - Phantom of the Opera and The Clash - I Fought The Law get my vote as covers I like more than the original. Also very much like Me First & The Gimme Gimmes version of Nothing Compares To You, since I learned to hate that song while with one of my old girlfriends who used to listen to it. All. The. Time.
-
Aretha Franklin's cover of "Respect" >> Otis Redding's original. That is an undeniable fact.
Yo La Tengo's cover of Do Ya Think I'm Sexy? is better than the original by Rod Stewart.
The Revolting Cocks' version is the best of all. :D
*agrees* Rod Stewart even likes the RevCo version.
-
Most of the songs on the Tori Amos album "Strange Little Girls".
Especially the cover of "97' Bonnie & Clyde" - orig. by Emenem
-
Iron Maiden + Nightwish - Phantom of the Opera
Umm, the Iron Maiden track 'Phantom of the Opera' is a totally different song, you know that right?
The best version of PotO is by Lacrimosa anyway
-
i occasionally enjoy the shins cover of 'we will become silhouettes' better than the original. depends entirely on the mood im in though...
-
Iron Maiden + Nightwish - Phantom of the Opera
Umm, the Iron Maiden track 'Phantom of the Opera' is a totally different song, you know that right?
The best version of PotO is by Lacrimosa anyway
No... didn't know that... but there is a Nightwish / Iron Maiden PotO in existence.
-
I've never found the Phantom of the Opera Nightwish on an album or on their site, but I do have the track and it sounds a lot like Tarja. Must be a B-side.
Oh to covers, it isn't greater than the original, but it's damn close to being on par. Back in 2001 at the y100 FEZtival in Camden, NJ the band Ours performed a cover of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. Johnny Neico is one of the few people who do Freddie Mercury justice.
Earlier that same day Pete Yorn did a decent cover of Springsteen's Atlantic City too. Nothing beats the Boss though.
-
ON the topic of live ones... when I went to see Velvet Revolver in January they did a cover of Mr. Brownstone... know it's kinda cheating since 3 out of 5 band members are ex GnR anyway, but I thought it sounded way better with Scott Weiland singing.
Even my GnR hating best friend thought it was fantastic.
-
The Red House Painters cover of "Silly Love Songs" beat up the original version by Wings so hard that Paul McCartney still can't pee straight.
-
Well, Wings sucked, so that isn't too hard to do.
-
Most of the songs on the Tori Amos album "Strange Little Girls".
Especially the cover of "97' Bonnie & Clyde" - orig. by Emenem
The Eminem cover is fucking wicked! It's remarkably creepy with her vocals. I've never actually heard the original, but since it's Eminem, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Tori Amos' version is better. :)
In related news, I was in the music store the other day and saw a Warren Zevon tribute album. I think it was called Enjoy Every Sandwich. Has anybody heard it? I'm curious as to what the quality of the covers are like. The Pixies have a song on there (forget which one), and Adam Sandler does "Werewolves of London" (don't know how to feel about that).
-
Speaking of Warron Zevon. I like the cover of Raspberry Beret that Hindu Love Gods (Warron Zevon on vocals backed by R.E.M.) better than the Prince version.
-
I like Rufus Wainwright's cover of Across the Universe better than the Beatles' original.
-
Wainright's isn't even the best cover of "Across the Universe." That honor belongs to Ms. Fiona Apple.
-
I swear there was a thread just like this not too long ago. Probably still on the front page even.
Anyway... Nirvana's cover of The Man Who Sold The World. I <3 Bowie, but.. they really do it better. &Though I haven't heard the Meat Puppets song, I bet they do Lake of Fire better, too.
Also, Ari Hest does the best Hallelujah. I don't know wtf you guys are on.
Physical (You're So) by NIN > the original
Pearl Jam's Last Kiss.
Xiu Xiu: Fast Car.
-
From what I remember the Meat Puppet covers didn't sound all that different. I agree with The Man Who Sold the World. I also like their cover of Here She Comes Now is probably better then the Velvet Underground but I don't really remember. Didn't they also cover a Devo song? I can never remember.
-
Hahah that reminds me I have DEVO covering Head Like a Hole and it's fucking hilarious.
-
Yeah! Heh, I actually like it more.
-
Everyone likes Buckley's "Hallelujah." I prefer Leonard Cohen's original to Buckley's, but kd lang has a cover of it on her new album that's fucking splendid.
-
She don't use jelly Ben Folds > Flaming lips.
-
Not technically a cover since it's the same band with a different singer, but:
Elton John + Queen - The Show Must Go On >> Queen - The Show Must Go On
A proper cover would be Muse - Feeling Good > Nina Simone - Feeling Good, as would Reel Big Fish - Take On Me > Aha - Take On Me.
-
I've never found the Phantom of the Opera Nightwish on an album or on their site, but I do have the track and it sounds a lot like Tarja. Must be a B-side.
Track 9 on Century Child.
-
and Adam Sandler does "Werewolves of London" (don't know how to feel about that).
I woke up from a dead sleep one night, and Adam Sandler was doing that cover on some later night talk show..... swore I dreamed it till just now. I have to admit that it was a pretty good cover, even though I was expecting him to start making stupid faces the whole time.
-
Proof that even a complete fuck-knuckle can't ruin a great song.
-
I almost picked the album up. Perhaps if there had been a cover of "Excitable Boy" by a cool band I would have. I love songs where the lyrics and musical style are at odds with one another; i.e., in "Excitable Boy" the music is upbeat but the story is about a fucked up kid. There was also no cover of "Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner." How do you make a tribute to Zevon without including Roland? Sigh.
-
I prefer Nirvana's Man Who Sold the world over David Bowie's... And Metallica's 'Last Caress/Green Hell' over The Misfits.
-
Erm....Tatu's How Soon Is Now.
I like it better than the original, which, for a lover of miserable indie music should be a travesty, but it's soooooooo gooooooooooood!
-
I've been jaded by years of really bad Operation Ivy covers
-
And Metallica's 'Last Caress/Green Hell' over The Misfits.
Them's fightin' words.
-
I'll hold, you punch. We'll swap over after he loses conciousness for the first time.
-
I'm a big Tori Amos fan, but 99% of Strange Little Girl makes me sad, because it is not very good. I think the one song I did like though was 97 Bonnie & Clyde. I saw her play it live on the SLG tour too ^^
I've never actually heard Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah". I know! I know! stop pelting me with fruit! If someone could, say, provide me with a clandestine link to said song, I would appreciate it. Needess to say, I love Buckley's version.
Joan Jett's & The Blackhearts cover of "I Love Rock and Roll" Will always demolish any versions that came before, or after (That means you, Miss Spears!)
My Heirarchy of enjoyment for Last Caress goes NOFX > Metallica > anyone else in the world > The Misfits. I hate Glenn Danzig with a fiery passion.
I also enjoy NOFXs cover of "Vincent" over the Don Mclean version.
Lastly, Apollo 440's cover of Don't Fear The Reaper is about 90874587409679087x better than the Blue Oyster Cult original, which is already pretty rad, all things considered.
-
I hate Glenn Danzig with a fiery passion.
ai ai ai!
*stabs*
-
Joan Jett's & The Blackhearts cover of "I Love Rock and Roll" Will always demolish any versions that came before, or after (That means you, Miss Spears!)
Oh god! I did a Google search, hoping you were making a joke, but it's true! Britney Spears really did do a cover of I Love Rock and Roll! Isn't that in the Book of Revelations? The end times are truly nigh! I pray to my Unholy Master that I never hear this abomination.
-
I've heard that version. It hurts more painfully than a painful thing, and I have a soft spot for Britney, too.
I probably shouldn't say this, but have you heard her version of I can't get no Satisfaction?
OUCH.
-
No (thankfully), but I am rather fond of Dweezil and Ahmet Zappa's version of "Hit Me Baby One More Time."
-
Joan Jett's & The Blackhearts cover of "I Love Rock and Roll" Will always demolish any versions that came before, or after (That means you, Miss Spears!)
Joan Kirner's version was better . . .
(Ask an Australian friend to explain!)
-
Metallica - The Imperial March
The Travis version of Baby One More Time is pure comedy, the Darius version is pure torture. The original is only good as eyecandy with the volume really low :)
-
I hate Glenn Danzig with a fiery passion.
There are two artists/bands that I take personal affront to when they are spoken ill of, and they are the Misfits and Johnny Cash. You'd understand if you saw my giant Misfits tattoo. I'm curious as to why there's all the Danzig hatin'.
-
Hum doing Invisible Sun is better the the Sting version. It's an obscure mp3, but it's out there.
Evergreen Terrace covering U2's Sunday Bloody Sunday is very good. It's not that's it's better, it's just different in a good way.
the Foo Fighters covering Gary Numan's Down in the Park.
the Smahing Pumpkins - Clones, You're All I've got Tonight
The Kickin' Wookies (a local band) covering the Cure's Boys Don't Cry.
I agree that Xiu Xiu's version of Fast Cars is insanely superior to the original.
The Pixies - In Heaven (The Lady in the Radiator Song), Head On, Wild Honey Pie.
-
Ben Folds' cover of In Between Days is pretty damn great, though the original still fairly rocks.
Incidentally, on the subject of horrible covers, Madonna's American Pie is my favourite. Missed the point like it wasn't there.
-
Only cover I like much more than the original: Oingo Boingo--Don't Fear The Reaper
-

I mean come on! Just look at the guy!
-
Hey, if we're on the subject of that idiotic whore bastardizing songs we may as well throw in My Prerogative.
Also, according to my sister, she wants to be a Forensic Criminalist. As in a CSI... hahahahaha... sorry, I was just imagining her trying to figure out how the periodic table works.
-
Jimmy Eat World - Firestarter >(well, I like it better)> Prodigy - Firestarter
Also, Melbourne punks The Vandals have a cover of Queen's Don't Stop Me Now. I really love the Queen version, and this cover has some faults, but it rocks fairly hard.
-
gary jules version of 'mad world' is infinately better than the tears for fears version
Seconded. And thirded too for emphasis. ;)
Sorry, but you are painfully wrong in this respect. I love the music in the Tears for Fears version, and I think it helps the vocals. Gary Jules' version is just too....damn....slow...and...forboding.
Damn you, Donnie Darko.
/end rant.
-
generally when talking about such depressing things as having dreams about dying being the best ones, upbeat 80's music isn't a good backdrop in my opinion, nor are the bpm in general for that song.
-
The Ramones - Spiderman Theme
:D
-
Heh, ever hear Moxy Früvous' take on the Spiderman theme? I doubt anyone outside of Canada knows who MF is, but I was totally a Frühead when they first came on the scene. They also did a rendition of "Green Eggs and Ham" that was pretty funny.
-
YUS! Fruvous are the win! The Gulf War Song is one of my favourites ever...
/return to topic
Fruvous' covers are pretty great. Ever hear them and Da Vinci's Notebook doing Shoehorn With Teeth? (TMBG)
edit: Früvous :p

Yeah. HE'S SO FUCKING COOOOOOOOL!!!
I have honestly been compared to Glenn in physical appearance on several seperate occasions. If I had big muscles it would probably happen a lot more. Unfortunately I can't sing anywhere near as good.
-
The whole hundred reasons how soon is now 7".
-
nirvanas "where did you sleep last night" is in my opinion better than the original wierd blues(i think) song by leadbelly. not that i dont like blues in general.
and sonic youths version of nirvanas "moist vagina". mostly because the original is recorded really badly, and it doesnt feel like theyre trying that hard.
theres probably a bunch more that i´m lazy to think of right now... :P
-
I saw Rufus Wainwright do a pretty amazing version live of that at a Cohen tribute night...but still prefer Jeff Buckley's version.
Also, another cover that I prefer to the original -
Now It's Overhead's version of Magnetic Fields' The Book of Love is ever so slightly better than the original. But only by a little bit.
-
gary jules version of 'mad world' is infinately better than the tears for fears version
i think that they're equal. i Love the tears for fears version.
did you know that bjork covered NIN's Hurt too? oh that's right.
-
Nirvana - Lake of Fire > Meat Puppets - Lake of Fire
-

When I go to the san diego comic con this year, Im gonna rent one of those shirts with the ultra flatscreen TVs in it, and I'm gonna loop that clip of Danzig getting knocked the fuck out, and Im gonna stand in front of his booth all 4 days of the con.
True story.
-
I Agree with the Johnny Cash one. But have you heard OZZY's Prince of darkness boxset. It's awesome. I like the cover of Mountains Mississppi Queen. it's awesome. Just heard it today!!!!
-

Bit gay, to use 13 year old terminology.
-
The Pixies - Head On
So much better than the original that it hurts.
-
Eh, Dream Theater pretty much phoned in the Master of Puppets and Number of the Beast album covers.
The band looks board as well doing Puppets. Ok, so it's tight as anything and ultra spot on, but it's Dream Theater. I feel maybe that should have mixed it up a bit. Mainly because MoP is just a horribly generic album.
Type O Negative - Paranoid. No longer sounding like an over played track. It's just so danm creepy and more importantly, acctually sounds like Black Sabbath in that era.
-
Imo, as DT's version of MoP sticks a bit too close for true lateness...now, if you want true awesome on that song, it was Apocalyptica live. With a kick-ass drummer. Fuck. One of them jumped off his thrown and slung out the solo in a bow-legged black metal stance. Only exceeded by the slowly speeding thousand-person hand clap on 'Hall of the Mountain King' and the bit where one of them ran up the drumkit and played a solo with his cello stuck in the top of one of the bass drums.
-
The cover over the original any day.
-
oh and Blind Guardian - Mr. Sandman because it's fucking brilliant and the band can't help but laugh at it.
-
Is it ok that I like the Dead Kennedy's version of Viva Las Vegas more than I do...uh...Elvis'?
Or that I prefer the original cut of "LoveSong" to the 311 cover?
-
Yes to the first one, and then a resounding, soul-crushing NO.
-
gary jules version of 'mad world' is infinately better than the tears for fears version
Seconded. And thirded too for emphasis. ;)

I was never too fond of the cover either, but to be honest that isn't even my favourite Tears For Fears song by any stretch. I like it, but then again I like every song on The Hurting. Cold 80s synths as a backdrop to mental anguish, thudding heartbeat-style percussion, sounds like a good idea to me!
-
Yes to the first one, and then a resounding, soul-crushing NO.
I dunno, the reggae beat of the 311 cover just doesn't do it for me.
-
the park bench rant's version of "st. ides heaven" > elliott smith.
i heard pbr's version first, and then the original. i think the vocals on the original are too smooth.
(ahh, diddums, jon took that song off his tracklist at purevolume. damn him!)
-
I don't know if you people have heard of Bodyjar (http://www.bodyjar.com.au/) at all, they're a... well, they're a band from Melbourne. I'm not quite as up on genre classification as all you guys are. Their music is short, fast and loud. Call it what you want.
They have a cover of Simon & Garfunkel's 'Hazy Shade Of Winter' which works kinda well.
-
Elbow does Destiny's Child's Independant Woman quite well.
-
Johnny Neico is one of the few people who do Freddie Mercury justice.
Jimmy Gnecco?
I like Ours, sometimes.
-
"Against All Odds"
The Postal Service > Phil Collins
But in general I almost always like the original better!
-
"Against All Odds"
The Postal Service > Phil Collins
agreed. to be fair though, in that competition the Postal Service won pretty much by default.
I'd also like to add that I like Ozma's version of Korobeiniki, which is a traditional Russian folk song (better known as the tetris song) is slightly better in my opinion than Nintendo's MIDI version
-
"Stayin' Alive"
Ozzy Osbourne/Dweezil Zappa > The Bee Gees
Dweezil also did a cover of the same song with Donny Osmond on vocals. :D
-
DUH
yo la tengo - nuclear war > sun ra - nuclear war
-
Elliott Smith--When I paint my masterpiece> Bob Dylan---When I paint my masterpiece
-
Nirvana -- Man Who Sold The World > David Bowie -- Man Who Sold The World
NOFX -- Champs Elysee >> Joe Dassin -- Champs Elysee
one over which I am completely and utterly torn is the Beatles' Eleanor Rigby, versus the Thrice cover... :'[
-
Dead Kennedys version of "I fought the law" is better than the original. Then again, it's not exactly a cover, per se.
-
I dunno, I really think that Tom Wait's original Jersey Girl has the edge over Springsteen's.
-
Jeridus: I've heard the Thrice one, and I have to admit it is a pretty damn good cover.
-
Cat Powerss Wonderwall > Oasis' Wonderwall
-
The Mike Flowers Pops' Wonderwall > Oasis's Wonderwall
-
Cat Powerss Wonderwall > Oasis' Wonderwall
Agreed.
Also, Cat Power's version of 'I Found a Reason' (velvet underground).
Her voice makes me wobbly at the knees.
-
Iron Maiden covering the Ripper, orignaly by Judas Priest.
I allways wondered if it was Bruce Dickinson way of telling JP that they sucked.
-
No, it was Bruce going "Rob Halford is my big gay God. and I want his hat".
And dammit, who wouldn't want a hat like that?
-
EDIT: I stand corrected, never mind. But I'll have no talk of JP sucking around here.
-
Jeridus: I've heard the Thrice one, and I have to admit it is a pretty damn good cover.
Oh I know it's a good song. It's just that I'm also somehat of a Beatles freak.
-
That Thrice cover of Elanor Rigby just doesn't have the same feel as the original Beatles piece, which was perfect. Also he messed up the lyrics, it where do they all come from, then where do they all belong.
EDIT: I don't mean to be an asshole, it's just not my cup of tea. Mmmm, I could go for some tea now.
-
Jeridus: I've heard the Thrice one, and I have to admit it is a pretty damn good cover.
Oh I know it's a good song. It's just that I'm also somehat of a Beatles freak.
I have a thing for the violin in the beatles version so this just isn't as good.
Plus I don't really like that kind of music so turning it into a punk pop song kinda just was a dumb idea in my eyes.
By the way
Pink Floyd's Knockin on Heaven's Doors> Bob Dylan's
-
Zombie Apocalypse' version of Welcome to the Jungle> Guns and Roses version of Welcome to the Jungle.
