So...
Now that I got everyone who's pissed on newbies asking stupid questions attention I will ask a stupid question:
Is Depeche Mode indie? I heard their first publishers were independent. Does a band count as independent if they depend on independent publishers?
-
Wtf? I thought Depeche Mode were New Wave!
/awaits flamage
-
Funny, I always thought Depeche Mode were just plain old crap.
/recklessly tempts flamage, but stands by his opinion
-
I like Depeche Mode, but I prefer the bands they've inspired...
And I'd go with new wave, but it's loosely indie too...as indie is a comfortable bracket which accomodates a whole heap of stuff that isn;t hard rock, some dance, hip hop etc...
Maybe they're just a band that appeals to indie kids.
-
I wouldn't call them indie, but pretending to like them will earn you a lot of "indie cred."
People will be impressed if you can talk at length about how they pioneered the use of synthesizers, and that singles like "Just Can't Get Enough" and "People are People," while ground-breaking and far ahead of their time, really aren't the band's best work, despite their popularity.
-
^ I hereby award you 5 scene points.
You'd have got more if you'd talked about how Black Celebration was their 'true' opus... ;)
-
Regardless: Slave and Master is a great song.
-
New wave? I am an expert pretending to know stuff but now I'll skip that to be able to learn something. What is new wave? Is it called new because they have "syntethic" sounds (which probably was new in the 70's?)?
I like Depeche Mode because I deleted all their sucky songs.
-
hmmmm, id say its music that is new, but old at the same time.....
-
Like someone playing Mozart on a synthesizer?
-
right own brutha!
-
Ok, New Wave is a term that was created by label execs. The talking heads were pretty much the first band to be called "new wave" When they were signed to their first record contract the label didn't want to call them punk rock because they saw Punk rock as a fad. So they decided to come up with a new term to describe their music. The label exec decided that the Talking Heads were the aural equivilent of "New Wave Cinema" and the genre of music known as New Wave was born. After this point pretty much any band that had the energy of punk rock but was different in pop sensibilities or had more of a focus on songwriting were instantly classified as New Wave. So bands like the Police, REM, Depeche Mode, and blah blah blah are all New Wave.
So New Wave is alot like the current use of Indie. It is a marketing tool. Gone are the days when Indie actualy meant soley independant. Hopefully that answered your question. Holy fuck i spend to much time watching VH1.

Sucky? Bah! Violator is a badass album, the only song on the entire album that is substandard is (ironically) "Sweetest Perfection"
-
Thanks TheoristB, I suppose that's the straightest answer possible. I feel somewhat enlightened.
Speaking of textwriting I must sound my hatred for the polical parts of some rap texts were they actually complain about society being too socialistic AND too capitalistic (but that's perhaps only here, we are as good as commies, the politicians speak of a new maximal income).
-
Indie?
...Indie?
...
INDIE!?!!?!!!111
-

Haha, no problem. Be lucky I didn't explain what New Wave Cinema is I am a film major so I have all of this knowledge that I have no practical use for so I get all excited when an opportunity like this presents its self. Yarg.

Now, here's a question...Flogging Molly is the best selling independent band in the world. Now do not kill me (please, death terrifies me) if this info is not 100% correct, the facts may have changed since last i looked it up. But regardless, the fact that they are an independent label should qualify them as indie, correct? However, according to many people, being well known disqualifies a band for the indie title. this concept was touched on in the QC comic during the strip in which Faye theorized that the best indie band is one which no one has ever heard of. Now, if this is true, then Flogging Molly is in fact, not indie. so....I'm sure you understand the dilemma now. Which is it? Is Flogging Molly indie or aren't they?
Ponder that and get back to me.
-
Better question might be, "does it matter?"
-
hmmm....does it matter? *The Writer ponders this briefly* Well...that depends on the angle you view it from doesn't it. If interest makes something matter, then, yes, it does because it interests me. On the same token...it might not be. Undoubtedly, some people are completely uninterested in the question. From a broad universal relevance view, the immediate answer would probably be no, but if one finds meaning in simple things, or subscribes to the belief that all things are one, then the question could very well be important on the universal scale! However, the larger question remains, does it matter whether or not the Flogging Molly question matters? Now, this new question could be taken the exact same direction indicated in my previous text, but that would just lead into an infinite loop, which would take us nowhere. So, if any meaning is going to be gleaned from this whole question mess, it will have to be by sticking to the original question. So.....is Flogging Molly indie?
ponder that and get back to me

Flogging Molly is the best selling independent band in the world.
I can't believe that for one single second. You know Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake are technically on an indie label? Also not that many people have heard of Flogging Molly, so they're quite indie from that perspective.
-
well, and i'm tempting hatred here, but who cares if theyre indie or not? i love depeche mode. i also love the cure, bauhaus, souxsie and the banshees, and a load of other 80's bands. fact is, new wave, indie, whatever. theyre just GOOD. let that be the way you classify your music.
-
One side of my brain knows how right you are.
and the other wants to beat your noggin in with a rusty hedge trimmer.
-
Sucky? Bah! Violator is a badass album, the only song on the entire album that is substandard is (ironically) "Sweetest Perfection"
Bahahaha, thats gold. But I totally agree. Depeche Mode is a really terrific band, its too bad heroin got more important than the music to them.
PS: 24HRT, your name rocks hard, as do your 80's bands.
-
thanks! i have this love of 80's bands that NOONE i hang out with or am related to seems to understand. oh well, i'm alone...so alone...*sniff*
as for my name, well, i think i'm really really sick of doing the "xgenericangryhardcorenamex" thing. just over it. yeah, i'm straightedge. i think EVERYONE knows that. adding x's to everything is a little bit of overkill.
plus, blake schwarzenbach is my god. i pray to him. hourly.
-
if you like 80s, but want something tht doesnt suck various arseholes.try "the faint"
great band
-
i do, in fact, enjoy the faint. however, i do also believe that they all REALLY want to be flock of seagulls. like, alot.
-
The Faint are possibly the greatest thing in the world ever. Apart from possibly cigarettes or chocolate, but it's a close call.
-
yeah, but what happens when your listening to the faint, eating a brownie, an smoking? does your head explode?
-

Haha, yah, Blake is so my God too. http://nothingnice.com/index.php?pageNum_Recordset2=7&totalRows_Recordset2=244
I kid, I make fun of my SXE friends way too much.
Can you tell I'm in love with Mitch Clem, by the way?
-
god, the first time i read that comic, i laughed so hard i woke up my then-roommate. that one and these two:

although, i have to say that i've never been a HUGE fan of jets to brazil.
-
Hahaha, man, the second one killed me too. But your distaste for JTB ist krazy. I like some of the Jets To Brazil stuff better then some Jawbreaker. I genuinely love both though.
-
yeah, but what happens when your listening to the faint, eating a brownie, an smoking? does your head explode?
No. Orgasm.
-
...cool.
and skibas, it's not that i don't like JTB PERIOD, it's just that i don't like them as much as i love jawbreaker.
-
Yah, I can see how someone would prefer them.
I forget what this thread's about.
-
ummm...fuck. i think someone asked if depeche mode was indie. meh...
-
I listen pretty much to Depeche Mode.
When I read Questionable Content I often feel like "I would hate these people of I ever met them in real life, are they typically indie or is everyone that annoying?" and I read somewhere that Depeche Mode first song was released by an independant company.
So I was afraid I was going to turn into some indie kid without noticing. Kind of.
-
ow. harsh.
well, i can't speak for the indie rock scene, but i can say that arrogance is pretty pandemic in the hardcore scene. if you don't have the right tattoos, hair style, clothes, or music taste, there are certain people who will write you off as a jackass.
not every hardcore kid is like that, mind you, but every once in a while, i'll meet one, and be completely embaressed for them. i almost want to apologize to everyone who ISN'T in the scene. "sorry, were not all like that. please ignore the asshole with the shotgun blast hair."
-
HEAL OH GREAT HEALER!
-
What's wrong with you?
-
i kinda felt like discussing indie. i simply did not do it just for lulz.
-
So you bumped a pretty terrible thread that is four years old and has very little to do with the topic you wanted to discuss?
We have this discussion all over the place. Indie=Independent, that is all there is to it. No need to complicated the matter. That is the definition, it works, let's stick to it.
-
Oh come on now, don't be harsh. It's only three years old.
Locked to discourage this kind of thing happening in the future. While I commend you, Mr. Mojo, for taking the trouble to find out if there were any old threads covering a topic you wanted to discuss, before plunging in and starting a new thread on that topic . . . Reviving threads from three years ago is taking it a little far. As a general rule of thumb (which I'm making up right here on the spot) if you want to discuss a topic and the only relevant thread was last active more than six months ago, feel free to start a new thread.
EDIT: Also, I'm locking this thread because of that annoying "!?!!?!!!111" thing in the title. Man, that wasn't even funny in 2005.
