this is a thread to get people introduced to music they may not have heard of. no "indie cred," no pretensions, just good fucking tunes.
my choice of the evening: efterklang.
a dutch 10 piece of glitchy indie-chamber music. sounds a lot like the bjork vespertine album meets someone like rachel's or godspeed. very very very good. i suggest downloading this cause buying the album will run you a bit ($32 with postage straight from leaf) oh, the album is called tripper. it's really really good. every person i have played it for has loved it. check it out.
-
Will look it up soon as I get back from college...
My choice to add is Rob Dougan... a weird blend of classical and hip-hop style beats with some beautiful lyrics, albeit sung in a voice that sounds somewhat like Lou Reed with throat cancer. Either way, it comes off a lot better than it sounds, and more people need to look this guy up.

65 Days of Static, dammit.

Ooooh! I like 65DaysofStatic! They played down here very recently ( possibly last night) but I couldn't go, as I never have thursday nights free :(
Band I want people to talk about:
The Dawn Parade.
They're from Cambridge (well, Bury St Edmunds, to be exact), and John Peel used to love them, even if their fans tried to rig the Festive Fifty results in their favour. It very melodic, Smiths-y and brilliant in general. They played SXSW this year, too...

65daysofsstatic are ace, top noise action!
good band = Plans and Apologies, twee tastic from Derby, catchy tunes, odd lyrics and awesome instrumentals.

my choice of the evening: efterklang.
Someone told me efterklang were Danish... maybe they were wrong. They sound nice, I'd like to hear them sometime.
A band that's definitely Danish is Mew, and they're the best live band I've ever seen, bar none. I guess they're a kind of jangly, dreamy noiserock, which isn't saying much, but the singer has a really cool high-pitched voice. Their albums have good songs and dull songs, ok but not fantastic, but if you ever have a chance to see them play, please do so. It's a fantastic experience that leaves me stunned and breathless every time.
Their best album IMHO is their first, A Triumph for Man.
-
gabriel and dresden's remix of "in my memory" is one of my favourite songs ever. sorry if you don't like electronika, but you should listen anyway. this is just damn good music.
there's this brilliant band based down here in a-town called code atom. having looked online and not found any of their music posted anywhere (google or limewire), i say that you can email me for the tunes and/or i will post their title song (and maybe another one) when i can access my hard drive later today (if i don't forget, that is). either way, i think you will have to wait, so, yeah... (www.codeatom.com)

more people should listen to the capsules and bunnies for broken hearts.

Umm.
Wuthering Heights.

The Features (http://www.thefeatures.com)
granted, some of you people on here will hate it, but man i dig em. very upbeat rock, tons of farfisa organ, and an amazing drummer. the album "Exhibit A" just came out in the UK (it's been out in the US since sept), and they've got a single out now, "Blow It Out".
Go to the website and check out the video for "A Million Ways to Sing the Blues"....
-
Umm.
Wuthering Heights.
Novel sucks, band bloody rules.

-
Fallout Boy
wait no I mean!!!! ahhhhh
Seriously though, check out.
Listen to Jeph in his suggested listening. You should all listen to most of those fucking bands. Especially, Iron & Wine.
-
I will always be surprised that Isis and Opeth are on that list. More so Opeth as I know more that a few sceners that like Isis for some reason.
-
Someone told me efterklang were Danish... maybe they were wrong.
Efterklang is danish, not dutch, why is it that people can't tell the difference?
oh well Denmark has a good deal of good bands, including Mew, but also:
Under Byen - these guys and girls cannot get enough praise, I can't really describe them, they have to be experienced, though like most of the bands on this list, their records are only available in Europe.
Moon Gringo - recently disbanded indiepop band, but their two records Boy Girl Beat and their newest Ingrid Superstar are among the best indiepop I ever have heard.
Kitty Wu - dark ominous sparse rock'n'roll with really good lyrics
Kashmir - In their early days they were a form of funkrock band with witty lyrics, now they have matured quite a lot and made a milestone(in Denmark at least) with their album The Good Life, which some described as their Dark Side of the Moon.
A while ago came Zitilites out, which was also quite good, they may be my favourite band ever, though I seldom listen to them. It's just nice to know they are there ;)
epo-555 - danish shoegazer at it's best, gorgeous melodies and just the right kind of ghostly vocals
ENTAKT - A demoband, but never the less, they are pretty good and their vocalist kick ass, I don't know how to describe them, may be a little triphop-influenced?
Sorten Muld - I think they are disbanded, but they made some really good electronica records with adapted old danish ballads of bloodshed and dwarves and soothsayers, that may sound strange, but it's in danish so... anyway they are good.
-
Someone told me efterklang were Danish... maybe they were wrong.
Efterklang is danish, not dutch, why is it that people can't tell the difference?
Same reason why I've came across alot of people that think Heineken is German I suspect.
Sake, this really interesting band that I believe is/was from California. I'm not sure if to consider them punk, hardcore or other but they have a violinist and duel male/female vocalist
-
Defiance, Ohio (http://defianceohio.terrorware.com/).
-
The Residents.
-
These bands are at least halfway there in the "being heard"-ness department, but you can never have too many people listening to good music. Actually, that's totally not true. But still.
Soul Coughing.
Mirah.
Smog.
That is all.
-
Mirah = love. One of the best voices I think I've heard in ages...
And, as it's just come on my playlist,
BRAKES.
It's Eamon from British Sea Power, the brothers from Electric Soft Parade and Marc from the Tenderfoot, and they are the BEST BAND IN THE FUCKING WORLD.
Their stuff ranges from Clinic style dance-y indieness but better than any indie shit to psychotic brilliance...
please, if you own a soul, look at http://www.brakesbrakesbrakes.com, as they own you already, you just don't know it yet.
-
The Effigies. (http://www.effigies.com)
Great band from Chicago. In the early '80s they were bootboys who played awesome hardcore, but they evolved into more of a post-punk band as the decade progressed. Totally fucking awesome. Very intelligent, they just don't get nearly as much respect as other classic midwest bands, like Husker Du or Negative Approach. Check them out.
-
Throw Rag.
My buddy described them as "Turbonegro being sent to join the navy" and it is oddly apt, except throw in a man playing a instrument that combines washboard and cowbell.
-
Canvas. The intro to 'Black Shape of the Nexus (Mk.2)' from 'Lost In Rock' is possibly the greatest start to any album ever. More people should hear Soophie Nun Squad too, since I'm sure it would make them much chirpier. They basically sound like the best squat party of all time.
-
*coughjawbreakercough*
or is that a little obvious?
-
Everyone listens to Jawbreaker.
I suggest you suggest, Black Dahlia Murder.
-
hey, everyone here might listen to them, but god forbid you mention their name in a hardcore setting. you get tarred and feathered.
but yeah, black dahlia murder rocks. one of the best live shows i've ever seen.
bury your dead are great too. and the warriors. and set your goals. and a million other bands. i=music geek.
-
You get tarred and feathered for mentioning Jawbreaker in a hardcore setting? Wow, your scene must suck hard.
-
nah. just a lot of kids that love the thugcore. can't really figure it out myself. yeah, i'm into shattered realm, but acting all tough all the time just wears me out. i'd rather have a lemonade and watch maury povich.
-
Did you say Bury Your Dead...
Them be fighting words boy..
Just kidding.
-

Fantastic band that broke up a little while back [so sad] but you can usually track down some of their stuff. Or ask me. =P
-
Everyone listens to Jawbreaker.
I suggest you suggest, Black Dahlia Murder.
I'm sorry but what? BDM are one of the most horrible and fucking generic things come out of the Melo Death genre.
-
Morbid Angel, Dude. Morbid Angel beats them in generic ness by a longshot.
-
Dresden Dolls.
I haven't heard them mentioned enough and I absolutely love them.
So what if its Tori Amos with a darker past and pent up anger, you can tell there is pure emotion coming from that duo.
-
Morbid Angel, Dude. Morbid Angel beats them in generic ness by a longshot.
I said Melo Death. And there are far more generic Death Metal bands that Morbid Angel (apart from their last album)
-
Apan! ("The Ape")
They rap pretty slow and are not very skilled even thought their texts rock.
Uh, actually only three or four of their songs are worth listening to...
Actually they aren't very good at all. But I sure wish more people knew about them.
They have some free music on their website (it's under musik which means music :D, strange huh?)
I recommend Ingen som Hör dig, Desperat Psykedelia, En Kväll som Denna and På Västfronten intet Nytt.
I feel kind of French recommending things in a language few know and which sound silly pretty often.

the pAper chAse (http://www.thepaperchaseband.com/index2.html)
indescribeably brilliant and fucked up.
"hide the kitchen knives" especially the track "where have those hands been"
and anybody who dosent know brendan benson should check him out. seeing him for the second time this year next week \0/.
edit:
65DOS kick teh asses.
and amazon has some bits of that paper chase album to d/l. cant comment on clip length/quality as this pc has no sound card :/

two picks for the day:
opto. a collaboration between glitch-idm composer opiate (as seen on bjork's vespertine album and his own brilliant full lengths) and avant-electronic musician alva noto (not many minimalist electronic composers have museums commission them to make music for an exhibit). the first cd has tracks named after times of the day. at times they sound like some of aphex twin's more ambient stuff, other times it would fit well on constellation's roster (sounding like polmo polpo or the more ambient moments of godspeed for easy reference.) definitely softer and more of a background type music. very very beautiful though.
swans. no, they aren't that obscure. no, they aren't that unheard of. but no one fucking talks about them! from jarboe's fucking lilting voice that keeps you high up to gira's deep groan that will keep you down, from the haunting melodies that remind you of walking into a beautiful but creepy old building to the crushing heaviness that reminds you that that creepy old building was set to be demolished that day. this band has it all, and the lyrics are just the cherry on top. haven't heard them? trepadacious? do you like neurosis or isis? what about converge? sonic youth? yep, they all love swans (sonic youth used to play a lot of shows with them in the 80's, though swans is definitely more sonic youth influenced, not the other way around...) it can take a few listens to get into, but once you do, man, you will be hooked. i suggest you start with children of god and then move to filth and the great annihilator. go off on it.

Did you say Bury Your Dead...
Them be fighting words boy..
Just kidding.
...your dead to me.

We've already been over...I get the kids.
By the way, if you haven't you should check out www.myspace.com/vanzetti good ass michigan grindcore.

I've not seen anyone else here mention the Fire Show here. They're probably the only neo post-punk band I've ever really gotten into, well they're one of my favorite bands ever. You can download their whole catalogue free and legally at:
http://www.resplendentmusic.com/releases.html , just cause their singer is a nice person.
-
I said Melo Death. And there are far more generic Death Metal bands that Morbid Angel (apart from their last album)
*cough*sixfeetunder*cough*
As for Melo Death...is there anything actually original coming out the whole genre at all nowdays? Almost everyone decent's either progressed out (Opeth) sold out (In Flames) selling out (Soilwork) split up (Edge of Sanity) or is simply re-hashing their glory days endlessly and with less and less success (Dark Tranquillity). All the new bands are either slavish clones (Gardenian, BDM) random stabs at false originality (Dark Lunacy, who actually aren't that bad tbh) or Gothenburg-influenced metalcore (Shadows Fall, Unearth). The only MDM band I still look forward to releases from is Arch Enemy (And Children of Bodom, but I don't consider them MDM).
I wish more people talked more about Candlemass. It's like all the doomsters skip straight from Sabbath to the early nineties Birmingham scene and forget fucking Epicus Doomicus Metallicus slap-bang in the middle of it all. Everyone who likes doom knows Candlemass, but they always seem to get overlooked: It's all 'My Dying Bride this' and 'Electric Wizard that'. They released some of the best clean Doom ever, imo, and deserve more mentions.
I also wish more people knew Ewigkeit and Contrastic. Probably the two best electro-metal bands in the world.
-
my disco
www.crashingjets.com
they are from melbourne australia and are touring the states in a month or so so if they come to your town make sure you go see em, fucking rad band.
-
candlemass is real good. i dig a lot.
-
Filmmaker
Holy shit yes.
-
*cough*sixfeetunder*cough*
*SNIP*
I also wish more people knew Ewigkeit and Contrastic. Probably the two best electro-metal bands in the world.
Six Feet Under = Shitty rock and roll with even more shitty death vox. But yes, great example. Oh, Soilworks new album is the total sell out. And you're on wit the rest man.
CoB are pretty much Blackend Power Metal, Power with little BM touches in distortions and style and of course the vocals.
I've heard of Candlemass and yeah, I still need to get around to looking into them.
-
The Stereophonics first two albums were great. They don't seem to be particularly 'cool' though and are oft ignored by indie types fo being too mainstream or some such shit. Their loss.
-
How can a mainstream band need to be heard of more? Surely LESS people need to have heard of them if you want Indie people liking them?
-
Because (some) indie people are so far up their own arses that they ignore anything more 5 people know about, often to their own detriment.
-
I find it so funny that Indie is following in the footsteps of Black Metal.
-
another danish artist that wasn´t mentioned by my fellow dane Praeserpium Machinarum would be Tim Christensen. Pretty mainstream around here but i don´t think alot of peolple in other countries have heard of him. Great pop/classic rock n´ roll. best thing that has come out of denmark along with Kashmir in my opinion.
-
The Arrogant Worms.
No one knows about them, but they make me giggle.
-
I love the Arrogant Worms.
-
Dresden Dolls.
I haven't heard them mentioned enough and I absolutely love them.
So what if its Tori Amos with a darker past and pent up anger, you can tell there is pure emotion coming from that duo.
<3
one of the most fantabulous bands i've seen live. and, please, leave tori amos out of this...
-
65 Days of Static, dammit.
YOU KNOW I'M RIGHT!
http://www.65daysofstatic.com
As always Jetplane Landing.
www.jetplanelanding.com
(Also Fighting With Wire who supported 65 Days of Static on the recent tour I think who share a member with Jetplane Landing. www.fightingwithwire.co.uk )
-
I have to rep a band that went to my high school - Frodus. Nerdy post-punk spazcore with plenty of screaming and bizarre lyrics about fictional corporations taking over the world. They're no longer around, but you can get their discs online, in some pretentious record store, or if you're so inclined, you can probably find some tracks on P2P networks. Two members later started Decahedron, which is pretty similar both musically and lyrically.
-
RE:stereophonics
they are both underated and overated. people either like them for the wrong reasons or hate them form the wrong reasons. much like travis their musical ability is both overestimated and underestimated. neither are particularly groundbreaking, but both produce good *songs*.
imo beer etc.
-
hooray for whoever mentioned the dresden dolls! (didn't get around to reading the whole thread). i love them. it'd be so cool to see them live.
the raincoats. soo awesome! but not enough people listen to them! (too weird i guess). whatever- i like eccentric 70s chick bands with violins
also, i think more people need to hear the wonderfulness of breaker! breaker! (http://www.breakerbreaker.org). o and harvey danger, because they have some of the most beautiful lyrics i've ever heard (i know they're not very "indie" since they had a relativelly popular single, but it surprises me that a very small amount of people are really into them).
-
Dj Shadow trip-hop/hip-hop. unbelieveable
Black Label Society the band of ozzy's ex guitarist, zakk wylde.
Envy japanese hardcore x'D
Clann Zú aussie altrock or wtf.
-

Oh, hell yes. The Fire Show are amazing. It’s a damn shame they ended when they did. Their debut was great, and then every subsequent release flung their horizons wider.
Their version of "You Are My Sunshine" is just devastating. (It's on the third album from the right in El Opium's link, for anyone who wants to check it out.)
-
Black Label Society the band of ozzy's ex guitarist, zakk wylde.
I've actually got their patch on my patch jacket.
Nice patch. Nice band.
-
Reflector - Kansas Emo. I know you're thinking emo=bad, but they're closer to Braid and Fugazi then what passes as emo now.
Hopesfall - I haven't seen them mentioned much on this forum. Satellite Years is spacy Hardcore, close to HUM then metal. Their new album, A-types, is awful though.
Bellini - Proggy noisey music. It has Damon Che of Don Caballero fame as the drummer.
Edit: I should probably also mention Financial Panther, Before Braille, and Bullyrag A.K.A. Fucking Thunder.
-
Stellastarr* - it's incredible. Everyone in the band is like super-cool, and every song is just so much fun to listen to. Also if you see 'em live, the singer is mental. In teh good way.
**spluttertheymightbegiantschoke**
-
They've been on MTV, hardly need more people to hear them.
-
Envy japanese hardcore x'D
Good call, Envy are a great band and they're the kind of thing I can imagine people liking a lot even if they're not too keen on hardcore in general. I hear they're amazing live too.
-
Alex Boyt
amazing at guitar and voilin.
-
loquat.
dunno a thing about them, but their music is so prettiful.
-
Clearly most people have heard of 65daysofstatic. This is excellant. It is fair to say that they are my favourite band, and while they remain in this position, I will whore them with much enthusiasm. (Not my favourite artist, that changes all the time. Just favourite band)
Those who still be hating, cease. They rule.
Some may say my choice was poor, given that loads of people already know them. I think not. Clearly, my tactical nomination has won the thread.
You may now continue, pitifully striving for that silver medal.
Fin.
-
i actually got the raincoats reunion lp the other day. i wasn't too into it though, so i gave it to a friend who loves em. i like the other stuff more i guess.
and envy is really really good. my friend danielle got the luxury of driving them around and seeing them for 14 nights in a row. needless to say i was jealous.
-
Poe.
-
HUM: I've only heard like three people I don't know mention them and Downward is Heavenward is probably my favorite albulm ever and in my opinion were way ahead of their time.
Katatonia: Though this band has gone through significant changes over the years they are still one of my top five. If you want dark, gloomy music to slit your wrists to, check out "Brave Murder Day" or "Discouraged Ones". If you like progressive rock with catchy riffs and uniquely awesome vocals anything from "Tonights Music" to "Last Fair Deal Gone Down" to "Viva Emptiness" will rock your socks :)
Blue Oyster Cult: because kids don't respect the classics.
Balzac: Japanese Horror Punk
Avrigus: Epic Doom Metal with beautiful vocals
Pig Destroyer: Grindcore that will warp your soul.
Vision of Disorder: Imprint albulm is one of the most aggressive albulms I've ever heard.
*sorry, I've not gotten into too much indie music "yet", I've heard some that I like, but I don't own any of there cd's, besides maybe an Interpol cd*
-
Old Katatonia >>>>>>>>>> New Katatonia. Check out the October Tide side project to see a nice new take on it. Also the first album, Rain Without End was the last recording where Jonas used Death/Doom vocals.
Pig Destroyer are one of the must beautiful and talented Grindcore bands ever. The peotic lyrics are so dark, it's just amazing.
But certainly both bands have enough of a following in the underground ground.
-
i don't even think pig destroyer can be called grind anymore. not since explosions in ward 6, or maybe the split with gnob.... it's too much carcass worship now. not that that is a bad thing at all, but whatever. and terrifiyer was not as good as i was hoping... i mean, it's good, but no where near a "death metal epic."
i'd reccommend 324, birdflesh, sewn shut, and avulsion if you are a fan of grind and need a fix.
-
Envy japanese hardcore x'D
Good call, Envy are a great band and they're the kind of thing I can imagine people liking a lot even if they're not too keen on hardcore in general. I hear they're amazing live too.
Possibly one of the best live bands i've ever seen.
Awesome. Envy are top ace.
-
They cancelled their gig in Leeds at the very last minute. Bastards.
-
HUM: I've only heard like three people I don't know mention them and Downward is Heavenward is probably my favorite albulm ever and in my opinion were way ahead of their time.
Yes, HUM is awsome and DiH is beautiful.
And they were well ahead of their time; you'd be surprised by how many bands list them as an influence, Deftones, Evergreen Terrace, Hopesfall, and many more of the newer hxc bands.
If you like DiH check out Hopesfall's Satellite Years. It was recorded with Matt Talbot at his recording studio Great Western Record Recorders (http://www.gwrecordrecorders.com/).
Just to make this relevant.
Glifted - Tim Lash's post-HUM project.
The Rise - Industrial/hardcore type band.
-
I love the Arrogant Worms.
Yay!
-
Heheh, best song by Arrogant Worms - Last Saskatchewan Pirate
But I'm biased, cause I grew up there. =P
-
I hate almost everything that sounds like Envy, but I love Envy. Go figure.
The Yummy Fur!! (http://www.mylegendarygirlfriend.co.uk/yummyfur/) This band was so awesome. Their catalog is about to be reissued (first ever US release!) on Ba Da Bing! Hilarious, gangly nerdy Scottish guys who are not these guys. (http://www.vh1.com/shared/media/images/sn_legacy/addict/images/Proclaimers,_The/sq-prolcaimers-gonna-be-duo-sing-bmg.gif)
-
hehe...I like stereo girls by the yummy fur, but fear their imminent revival is due to the success of Msr Kapranos and not their fuzzy pop genius...oh well, can't have it all.
-
Feller Quentin - I am not a monster
Seriously check this stuff out, he also does hip hop production and lyrics, but I pause to mention that here, as this hold no resemblance. Lovely and pastoral and at times unsettling. Good folk with keen production, nuff said. If you read this thread Jeph, I think this might be up your alley.

Dappled Cities Fly.
I've been whoring them, since i saw them last month. Not enough people know them.
Go here.
http://www.dappledcitiesfly.com
-
Black Label Society the band of ozzy's ex guitarist, zakk wylde.
Wasn't his band called Pride and Glory, or am I thinking of someone else?
-
Under Byen
Moon Gringo
I saw these two play in lille vega once... I felt like I should like both of them, because I quite liked the style of both, but for some reason they didn't grab me. Especially under byen just felt like they were trying too hard to be intense, but failing.
epo-555 - danish shoegazer at it's best, gorgeous melodies and just the right kind of ghostly vocals
This sounds really good. I must try to hear them sometime...
Sorten Muld
Not too keen on them... the melodies are just too dull somehow. Nice idea though.
-
No, Pride & Glory was Zakk's one time Sludge/Southern Rock band that released a self titled in 1994 then split.
Zakk released a solo album (also Sludge/Souther stuff) in 95, called Book of Shadows. That project is dead as well.
Black Label Society was formed in 98 I think and it's his current project.
-
Can't go wrong with The Frames (http://www.theframes.ie) if you are Irish you probably have heard of them before if not, you MUST check them out. Their new album Burn the Maps was released recently on ANTI in the UK and in the states. also the album Set List, basically works as a live greatest hits album.
-
Mr. Mixel Pixel
atari2600 + synth pop + songs about robots = rad.
listen to them here (http://www.epitonic.com/songstreamer?coid=245850&bbadd=yes)
-
Just in general, Cryptic Wintermoon. I hardly ever see them mentioned anywhere, even on metal forums. One of my friends has made it his mission to collect the whole dicographies of every melodic death metal band ever, and among all the cliche and general drudge he occasionally turns up something sparkling, and Cryptic Wintermoon is definitely such a jewel. Very virtuous technical MDM with a cutting edge of symphonic black metal, mixing atmosphere and brutality in a barrage of ripping solos and tight, fast drumming.
'Supersatan' is probably one of my favourite songs ever.
"It won't be nice to
meet up with me
'cos all I wanna do
IS TO FISTFUCK YOU!!!"
-
I wish more people had heard of Jim Thirlwell (http://www.foetus.org) (Foetus, Steriod Maximus, Maonrexia, et. al).
As a composer and arranger, the versatility and depth of his skill is near-unrivaled. Picking over his Foetus albums alone, one can find surf-rock ("Satan Place"), gospel ("Haus on Fah"), big-band swing ("Slung"), filthy blues ("Bedrock"), industrial ("Verklemmt"), cabaret ("Cirrhosis of the Heart"), symphonies ("Overture from Pigdom Come") among countless other genres. He doesn’t just ape genre conventions—he’s skilled enough to remake his own image convincingly in each.
And aside from his musical skills, he's got a gift with lyrics, spinning webs of inverted phrases, deft wordplay, and a pitch-black sense of humor. (Though the latter means that many folks will probably shy away from the tongue-in-cheek revelries of murder, sex, and hate.)
If you watch The Venture Brothers, you've heard his work—the show's creators were wise enough to enlist Jim's skills as a composer. Pay attention to the music if you're able to.

Burn The Maps eh? I think i'll check that out. I only know of two songs from them, Dream Awake and Revelate but i love both of them.
-
Cruachan. It's uh... irish folk heavy metal with a female vocalist. Really cool.

Dream Awake is on Burn the Maps, Revelate is on their album Fitzcarraldo, and there is an excellant live version of it on Set List
(no i am not working on comission for the band)
-
Hey! Listen to Bearsuit! On their site, they have an mp3 of "Itsuko Got Married", which is my favorite song off their new album.
nownownow!
-
I'm told Sage Francis is rising in popularity, but somehow only one person I've talked to has ever heard his talents, and only one other person has heard OF him, period. Sage Francis is rap...but not crappy, or unintelligent...and has some pretty kickass lyrics and rhythm. Go for it, I say.
-
They've been on MTV, hardly need more people to hear them.
MTV does not a well-exposed band make.
EDIT: Mnemneth, Poe played at the Regina Folk Festival last year and they were AWESOME.
I think I'm thinking of the same Poe as you. The one you're talking about would fit in at a folk festival, right?
-
Hey! Listen to Bearsuit! On their site, they have an mp3 of "Itsuko Got Married", which is my favorite song off their new album.
Hey! I'm planning to go see them next month when they play in Glasgow. Should be good I hope!
-
I'm told Sage Francis is rising in popularity, but somehow only one person I've talked to has ever heard his talents, and only one other person has heard OF him, period. Sage Francis is rap...but not crappy, or unintelligent...and has some pretty kickass lyrics and rhythm. Go for it, I say.
SECOND'D
Also, hellacious live.
-
Yeah I got played his album on Epitaph and it was pretty good. Nice to hear some political hip-hop with a decent beat.
-

Hey! Lucky!

He played here not long ago for a mere admission of $5.95, but I missed it. =(

The comic has mentioned them, but i've never seen them mentioned on the forums maybe thats because they broke up idk. The Unicorns they're one of my favorite bands up with the flaming lips and I have this awesome pink shirt that says The Unicorns never liked you. You'd be surprised how many idiots say is the unicorns the band or something. By the way sorry if they are well known around here.
-
I just remembered a fantastic band that practically nobody seems to have heard of - Florian. Very twee, but supremely good noisy indie pop.
I really need to get more of their stuff, the only record I have of theirs is a vinyl single (which is amazing) that a charitable Swede sent me for free, and I don't have a turntable...
-
oo alic3sw0nd3rland i love the unicorns! i was so sad to hear they had broken up. i was born (a unicorn) is one of my favourite songs in the world
-
More people should listen to......
The Lucksmiths---Very good indie pop from down under. If you like Belle and Sebastian and wonderful pop songs do yourself a favor and check them out.

The World Inferno Friendship Society Too many words can be said about this band. World Inferno plays what has been called "carnival" or "circus" Punk. With two drummers, a three person horn section, a bass player and a guitar player and believe it or not a piano/accordion player, this band turns out amazingly well crafted tunes. World Inferno is simply unlike anything you have ever heard before. They have songs based on classic movie stars(like Peter Lore), dead punk rockers(like Jeffrey Lee Pierce) and a scary love of halloween. So if any of this sounds like fun to you, go to their website and track down some of their songs.
http://www.worldinferno.com
If for some reason you can't find any songs by either band I would be happy to help you out just PM me or IM me.
-
I love Fall Out Boy (listening to it at this very moment) and The Dresden Dolls which have been mentioned previously. But a band that everyone needs to know...
DISPATCH
It's techinically in the genre of jam rock I think, but I don't describe it very well but supposedly it's "funk and reggae influenced pop tunes"
Lots of their songs song pretty different, but man they have some of the best lyrics ever! My personal favorite songs of theirs are
The General
Openup
Out Loud
Bang, Bang
Bats in the Belfy
Small Change
-
For some reason I totally cannot stand the World/Inferno Friendship Society. I don't like their song construction. Plus I kinda have this view that proper punk shouldn't employ any instruments that can't be used in the brawl that results when the venue won't pay the band their fee because they used the word 'cunt' too many times.
How about Skyclad? I am fast coming to the opinion that I am, in fact, the worlds largest Skyclad fan. I would assume that their often upbeat, fiddle-and-guitar combo, lyrically driven folk metal might appeal to the kind of crowd that hangs around here, but everyone I have tried it on doesn't seem to like it. Some say it is too odd or outside their comfort zone (increasing my opinion that indie is really a very tame and unadventurous form of musical expression), some say it is too folky (Recent studies have shown that being too folky is impossible). One even said that he couldn't take it seriously because 'It's obvious he's trying to entertain' (This is obviously what people say when confronted with something that isn't ball-bitingly pretentious). Give them a go. Give them a proper go. Get one of their old, Martin Walkyier helmed albums (I would suggest Folkemon, The Answer Machine? or Irrational Anthems) And really give it a few good listens. Once you key into M. Walkyiers vocal register and pick up the subtle emotions, as well as those transmitted by the music, they are seriously, seriously good. Unique, original music with fantastic lyrics and social commentary invested with the venom of someone who has actually been on the recieving end of society. And did I mention the lyrics?
Please, please, PLEASE try them out and love them.
-
got a few here...(and bear in mind, most of these bands are probably better known than i think they are, because i tend to get blank stares when i mention them)
christ analogue would be a big pick for me. they've this glitchy, coldwave*sigh*, earlier industrial sound with bits of other things thrown in as well.
i, parasite is another big pick. you hear any of the albums & you'll know why.
idiom of sad. really haunting, beautiful music...for your sad-ons.
-
The Capitol City Dusters are teh awesome.
-
The Lawrence Arms probably. They're totally under-respected in my opinion. But this is all about personal taste.
Other bands I can think of are Chisel, Arcwelder, and The Pocket Rockets.
-
The stunning sounds that make Lights Out Berlin are ones not to be missed.
The sextet blast out amazing tunes at every opportunity, with guitars blazing, bass throbbing, keyboards brimming, drumming precision and the vocals touching and forceful.
www.lightsoutberlin to check them out, they are way too underated, even at the young age of just over a year old, constructed from friendship and ashes of several other bands.
-
Buckethead.
That is all.
Actually, any of his side projects would be good as well.
Praxis, Thanatopsis, and Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains are good as well.
-

I second this statement. These guys are pretty damn awesome.
-
I try to make it my personal mission to make people who like APC hear the original version of "The Nurse Who Loved Me" by Failure, and try to get anybody else that is into similar things into them too for that matter.
Also, I am spreading the word of Lovage around here more lately, because it's just good fun and beats.
-
I've mentioned these guys in a previous thread here, but I just have to mention them again. The Sourkeys, from Waterloo, Ontario. Still one of the best live shows I've been to in quite some time.
-

World Inferno are absolutely brilliant.
-
Cibo Matto
nothing new from them in quite a while, but Stereotype A is great.
Red Elvises
Kick-ass rock'n'roll from Siberia. Yeah, 3/4 of them are from Russia and they play surf rock/rockabilly stuff. And they put on a fantastic concert.
-
Buckethead.
That is all.
Actually, any of his side projects would be good as well.
Praxis, Thanatopsis, and Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains are good as well.
You're officially my favorite kinda-new poster. Also, I reccomend you pick up an album by The Residents, they might be just up your alley. (Their newest one, Animal Lover, is a good place to start.)
Also, Khar, Skyclad is fucking awesome.
-
New Rhodes (http://www.newrhodes.com) - Fantastic british pop-rock, Kele (Bloc Party) hearts them bigtime.
Tom Vek (http://www.tomvek.tv) Funky, spexy electro rock.
Komakino (http://www.komakino.tk) - Shouty, energetic Derby boys.
The Fog Band (http://www.thefogband.tk/) - Modtastic punkers with the most intimidating (onstage) frontman ever.
Apartment (http://www.weareapartment.com/) - Very pretty, very listenable and danceable rock lovelys.
...anyone who has supported Bloc Party or the Futureheads over the last two years. :)
-
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, aka BRMC.
-
Surely most people will have heard of them? I mean, I'm familiar with them and I generally hide from most mainstream stuff. I wish I'd made more of an effort in their case...
-
Actually, most people I mention them to just give me clueless looks.
-
Really? That surprises me, they seemed to be all over the place and you often see people wearing their shirts. I thought they were pretty big.
-
That's easy. Umphrey's McGee (http://www.archive.org/audio/etreelisting-browse.php?cat=Umphrey's%20McGee). By the by, I did the recording for the 2005-04-06 Temple Club show, and a few others throughout the years.. :)

Stephen Malkmus. I have yet to find anybody else who has heard of him. not that i've asked very many people... his self titled album features good upbeat music with fun lyrics about alaska and his girlfriend or other random things...
-
most of my Pavement-obsessed friends still revere Stephen Malkmus in that 'thou shalt not speak ill of anything Pavement related' way, so he's fairly popular over here, at least
-
half handed cloud
Pretty much is all from one guy, John Ringhofer and he has 3 great cds out. Many little songs multi instrumented all great listening. I listen to them over and over and never get tired of them. Maybe his christian message turns some off, but I am not christian and I love his music.
can find the music through here http://www.asthmatickitty.com/
-
Haha, I just read through this whole thread and recognised the majority of bands that people were posting. >_<
Sneaker Pimps.
I literally know about 5 people that know/like them. And 2 of them are people who I've told about them.
-
Really? The Sneaker Pimps are great, but i thought they were a little more well known than that. Possibly because 'Six Underground' was used for a beer advert.
-
I think Scientist has done some of the best dub Ive ever heard, however I really havent heard alot. And even if youre not into dub, check out his album "Scientist Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires", it contains some of The Best Songs Ever. Really ^~
-
Really? That surprises me, they seemed to be all over the place and you often see people wearing their shirts. I thought they were pretty big.
Maybe they're less big here in England.
This is where you tell me you're from England too, isn't it?
-
The thing saying 'Leeds, UK' next to the location bit under my name ought to have been a wee bit of a clue :)
-
The thing saying 'Leeds, UK' next to the location bit under my name ought to have been a wee bit of a clue :)
Yes, I spotted this AFTER posting. (stupid)
Do you really see BRMC fans? Everyone round here just gives me clueless looks. Then again, I'm surrounded by chavs.
-
59 Times The Pain.
Sweedish punk in the vein of Millencolin.
Also, Capitol City Dusters.
They are pure awesome.
-
Yeah, all over the place. Maybe not so frequently these days but I still see people with their shirts in the street a fair bit. Their stuff was all over the place a little while ago, I remember their songs getting played ad nauseum on MTV2 and I'm sure I heard them on the radio a fair bit too.
-
Meh, I just got really bored and did a pretty full list of bands I wish all the people here had heard more of.

And thats just being generous. I left the names of of lots of bands I thought you might have heard of which, lets face it, a good few of you probably haven't.
-
I see BRMC fans too...
It's a bit like seeing dead people, but without the dead part and with a lot more copies of the NME in the picture.
Another band who I neeeeeed more people to love is The Pipettes -
3 girls doing synchronised dancing and handclaps with a male backing band, they make the happiest music known to mankind, it's the best possible incarmation of pop. I know I've mentioned them before, but I won't rest until everyone knows them!
-
I've heard of Fields of the Nephilim, Queen Adreena and Zyklon-B.
-
To qoute Meatloaf:
"Well don't be sad...'cos 3 out of 300 ain't bad..."
And with Zyklon B, you sure you're not just thinking of the poison gas they used in Nazi death camps?
-
EDIT: Khar beat me to it. And hey, it's a small start on that list.
-

Yes, I'm sure. Hope you don't have a problem with that.
-
Zyklon-B is just a fairly random band to have heard from that list for a non fan.
-
I was friends with a guy a few months back who was into them.
-
I recognise about 10-15 names on that list for the same reason - one of my best mates is really into his metal.
Ask me what any of them sound like though, and I'm completely stumped. With the possible exception of Queen Adreena, as I remember having arguments with a mate as to who was better, King Adora or Queen Adreena. That was embarassing.
-

I don't get it...
Why is this so good? I just went and found their website, and you're right. It's perfect pop, but damnit if I know why!
-
*checks the pipettes website*
*listens to some tracks*
*nods slowly*
*puts Nazgul back on*
-
Damnit!
See, the thing is, I'm a miserable cow and generally only listen to miserable music, but a few bands can pull me out of being miserable and make me want to dance and smile and sing. Tilly and the Wall are one of those bands, Pipettes are another.
SO I WANT YOU ALL TO LOVE THEM TOO!
-
Miserable you say? Go listen to Life of Agony's River Runs Red...if you're still here by the end, you're not depressed.
*Listens to some Pipettes....blinks....blocks the website....goes back to Nortt*
-
When I want some cheery music, I generally listen to Skyclad. 'Helium' is definitively the happiest song about suicide ever, and 'Great Blow for a Day Job' is the most brilliant take on selling your soul to the devil ever.
I mentioned Skyclad twenty posts up, because they are (or rather were, fuck you Ken Riddle) THE. BEST. BAND. EVER. They had wit, originality, musical proficiency, catchy tunes, and genuine roots and credentials for their anger against society. When Good Charlotte sing about 'Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous' everybody laughs. When some out of work kid from a housing block who lives on his music sings about 'A Bellyfull of Emptiness' you don't laugh. Or I get very, very, very angry.
Did anyone check them out?
I'm going to give you NO EXCUSE:

Pleeeeeease *flutters eyelashes*
-
More people should listen to music from anime shows. How can somone disagree with cheery Japanese Music?
-
More people should appreciate Moxy Fruvous. I know I do. Therein lies true happiness. My friends and I were singing "King of Spain" forever!
-
Pleeeeeease *flutters eyelashes*
I promise I'll check these out on monday on my lunch break. I'm on my mom's computer, her husband is sleeping and for some reason when I plug headphones into the jack on this computer only one side will work. That would not do these songs justice I am sure.
-
Ok, giving Skyclad a shot. Thus far, I'm enjoying "Penny Dreadful" a great bit. It just makes me insanely happy. And I also LOVE the fiddle. Also, the clip of "Helium" makes me want to hear the whole song.... I have a soft spot for happy songs about death.
Now to experiment with more suggested music, until my brain explodes...
-
Let the converting begin!
-
Death from Above 1979.
Sexy, sexy, spunky rock charged with dancey bass lines and beats.
-
That fact some Indie music gets talked about with words like "sexy" really makes me want to check that those bands aren't actually 90's boy bands.
-
Listen to them, you'll see. www.deathfromabove1979.com
-
No thanks, I've been subjected to them before. But I do love that fact people try to be all cool about loving "indie" pop.
-
"Sexy" in reference to DFA1979's music is very apt.
-
No thanks, I've been subjected to them before. But I do love that fact people try to be all cool about loving "indie" pop.
What?? I wouldn't really classify them as "indie" pop.
-
That wasn't on about DFA1979...just the general indie love for pop music.
-
There seems to be a love for just about every genre imaginable within the label of "indie". So far, it seems to be a good thing.
-
There's no over groups of people that I can think of, apart from 8 year old girls and indie kids that claim to have a love of pop music.
If I was productive, I'd go and add to Khar's list, but it doesn't really need it and I'm lazy.
-
More people should listen to the Houston, Texas punk-rock band known as 'Last Ride In'... Because I said so!
-
The Lawrence Arms probably. They're totally under-respected in my opinion. But this is all about personal taste.
The Lawrence Arms are great. A band that can get BETTER after signing onto Fat Records is one heck of a band. The Broadways kicked ass too when they were together, as well.
I know many people on this thread know Iron&Wine, but not a lot generally speaking do. Sam Beam is great and deserves attention. Also a band called Buning Airlines (punk) really needs some credit. Give them a listen if you like things like Jawbox & At The Drive In, might enjoy them.
EDIT: I forgot a young fellow who goes by the name of Four Tet, sort of trip-hop style, amazing. Definately also deserves attention.
-
I could never get into Burning Airlines, although I do like a bit of Jawbox.
Signing to Fat isn't always a bad thing. Personally I thought 'As The Eternal Cowboy' was pretty much as good a record as 'Reinventing Axl Rose' so Against Me! managed it, although everyone tells me that Dillinger Four didn't.
Ah, Four Tet... question is, do I go see them or save money and watch Rapider Than Horsepower instead? I'm thinking Rapider.
-
See! I am in June! :D
-
Bearsuit were really really good, incidentally, and very noisy. Endorsed 100%.
-
I Voted For Kodos, great ska band, Audio Karate, and Arcade Fire (wait....I think everyone knows who Aracade fire is, crap)
-
Anyone for Orthrelm?
-
65 Days of Static, dammit.
YOU KNOW I'M RIGHT!
http://www.65daysofstatic.com
Yes, yes, a million times yes!
And to whoever mentioned the Dawn Parade- EVEN MORE YES. I am actually wearing one of their tshirts now, they are wonderful. Only good thing my ex-boyfriend did for me was get me into that band!
-

Hells yes. Rounds is an amazing album. His new one is uh.. less amazing, but still pretty good.

YESS!
I have so much love for that band, what's even more surreal is that half of the old line up appear to have relocated to Brighton, I keep bumping into them...I haven't seen them in ages though (as a band, that is) after a falling out with Miss Black America, as both of those bands were like bossom buddies to each other...and appear to be cursed whenever they try and play Brighton...
Oh well.
And Khar, I actually listened to some Skyclad a while back on your recommendation, but...it did nothing for me.
What can I say? I'm a soft indie kid.
I'm sorry.
-
But, but, they have acoustic tracks and fiddles and HAMMOND ORGANS, they're about as hardcore as a little kitten! And it is chock-a-block with melancholy and social commentary, I thought you indie types would lap it up!
Land Of The Rising Slum
Show me a politician who's a man we can trust
And if I ever meet him then I think I'll have him stuffed
Look out of the window - see not one happy face
The only splash of colour's the graffiti 'round the place.
It's hard to even crawl
With your back up against the wall.
I find it hard to sleep at night
I feel that the worst is yet to come
Social helter-skelter
Ride the downward spiral has begun.
Are some people just born bad
Or is it how we all become?
Human termites driven mad
In the concrete mound of the rising slum.
The people who are dark fear the people who are fair
And hippies live in terror of the guys who have no hair
The saddest thing of all - what I really find grim
Is we haven't yet noticed what a mess we're all in.
It's hard to even crawl
Now your back's up against the wall.
I find it hard to sleep at night
I feel that the worst is yet to come
Social helter-skelter
Ride the downward spiral has begun.
Are some people just born bad
Or is it how we all become?
Human termites driven mad
In the concrete mound of the rising slum.
The "whether man" says that the outlook's not great
A few outbreaks of murder with some isolated rape
I ask my doctor his advice, this is what he says,
"Get yourself some cancer boy, before you die of aids."
It's hard to even crawl
With your back up against the wall.
I find it hard to sleep at night
I feel that the worst is yet to come
Social helter-skelter
Ride the downward spiral has begun.
Are some people just born bad
Or is it how we all become?
Human termites driven mad
In the concrete mound of the rising slum.
I mean, come on! Is it the brimming with righteous anger and rabid ecosensitivity?
-
No, I like both those things in a band. It was the cheesiness that I didn't like... sorry Khar, just not something I could ever get into.
-
I wish more people here would know who SLAVE WHIPPING BLASPHEMY is!!
True Slave Whipping Black Metal!!!! \m/

PISS ON ABE!!!!!
-
Fall Of Transition, best emo/indie band of my year.
-
So what, folk instrumentation and a bit of slang is cheese nowadays?
Man, they do overplay the folksyness a bit I know...but you people make me sad. I crai!
-
Awwww...poor Khar.
As I said, I am sorry, but then again, you didn't take all that well to The Pipettes, as I recall ;)
Can I add All Girl Summer Fun Band to the list?
Man, I'm gonna overdose on kitsch girl pop soon..
-
What about Tin Star? They're broken up now, but has anyone heard them?
-
hmm... I should also add Every Move a Picture. I'm in love with their song "Signs of Life".
Oh. And more people should know about The Hidden Cameras. Because Mississauga really is a godamned place. And because everything they do is a parody. Yay.
-
Can I add All Girl Summer Fun Band to the list?
Man, I'm gonna overdose on kitsch girl pop soon..
You most certainly can, since they're amazing. Actually, do you have any more kitsch girl pop recommendations to throw out there? You seem to know your onions when it comes to this stuff.
-
i don't expect anyöne here to enjoy them, but i wish cabaret voltaire got more respect. they are (were? i don't know if they exist anymore) the definition ov audio dada-ism.
-
I think my little brother has listened to it, he dabbles in the obscure, but mostly punk like danish bands with such names as the Cunt Cannibals etc.
Just about all danish bands should get some more attention, because a great of them is quite good
hey Khar, I am going to check them Skyclad out..
...just to shut you up ;)
-
A hombre of mine mentioned Tin Star once. Never heard em though.
I mentioned this in another post I think, but anyone who's a fan of indy, The Beatles, new wave, or pretty much anything on the side of rock that isn't distorted all the time should definately check out The Sugarplastic. It's kinda hard to find their stuff outside of LA, but you can probably get "Bang, The Earth is Round" or maybe even "Resin" online. But your chances of finding a copy of "Radio Jejune", their classic and most Pixies-esque indy album is nilch to nien (nein? I speaka no german).
Also, If you don't already, you should most definately listen to EELS. I love the Eels so damned much. If you're in the Europe, I seriously recomend catching them on tour, like, right now! I saw them at one of their warm-up shows in LA and they are AWESOME this tour.
And lastly, If you diggums the jazz, check out an album by Karl Denson called (Dance Lesson No. 2). It oozes groove. Like, the grooves are seeping out of Karl Denson faster than the intelleigence from the US government.
-
I'm going to download the Skyclad songs, not to shut him up, but because they're free skyclad songs. Jesus.
Also, I reiterate The Residents, the weirdest band that doesn't suck. I'd upload a song but my FTP thing is being a mother.
-
If you're in the Europe, I seriously recomend catching them on tour, like, right now!
I am in the Europe, and am going to see the Eels the today! It is going to be the awesome!
-
SikTh
www.sikth.com
http://myspace.com/sikth
the only song you can hear on their site is from their up and coming new album but there are a couple of others you can hear on their myspace, anyone who is interested in wierd and wonderful metal should check out their last album "the trees are dead and dried out, wait for something wild"
i've seen them twice now and they have to be one of my favorite bands.
-
I liked their demo and EP stuff then it just really seemed to take a on the album and removed a lot of the fun stuff. That and being a bunch of twats the last time I saw them live didn't help either.
-
I never liked those UK metal bands Kerrang hyped like Sikth and Earthtone 9. I always felt there was some bite missing from them somewhere.
-
the ep version of "such the fool" was miles better than the album version i'll admit but maybe listening to the album has converted me somewhat to their new style.
they were much better the first time i saw them though they may not of been as good the second time due to the fact that one of the singers mikee was so stoned i could barely get a mumble out of him after the gig~
-
It's so sad considering what Kerrang started out as . Earthtone 9 I always hated, waste of time really. Much better UK acts around.
-
I saw that ex-Earthtone 9 band The Blueprint recently who really reminded me of that whole mid-to-late-90s era. They headlined an all-dayer but I have no idea why they got booked because the crowd was largely made up of hardcore types, and they rather predictably tanked embarrassingly. Whoever thought they'd be able to follow Narcosis must have been crazy.
-
Yeah, I've heard stuff about The Blueprint and it's never sounded any good to me. At some point I'll get around to checking out real underground UK acts again.
-
Pack of Wolves - I'm something of a novice to kitschy pop, being as most of my music is inherently depressing, BUT...
The Kitsch list at the moment is:
Pipettes (mentionedd already)
Tilly and the Wall (none of my mates know them, but it seems they're pretty popular on here - they have a tap dancing drummer, so it's impossible not to love them!)
Kenickie (sadly, they've been and gone, shouty girl rock/pop, they sang songs about PVC and going out and getting drunk. They were amazing)
Smoosh (a 10 and 12 year old playing the best kind of songs, everyone should investigate them, they epitomise good pop)
And maybe some Beulah, Park Ave (if you can cope with Conor Oberst's involvement), Melys (a bit indie-fied, but a lush welsh band), Kimya Dawson (one half of Moldy Peaches, and, unlike Adam Green, is not a knob), Surferosa (a bit more brash, sort of electo-ish) and Younger Younger 28s...
Wow. I didn't realise quite how much of this stuff I had.
-
If you're in the Europe, I seriously recomend catching them on tour, like, right now!
I am in the Europe, and am going to see the Eels the today! It is going to be the awesome!
*giggle*
I'm going to see them next month at the Queen Elizabeth Hall as part of Meltdown. Eels... WITH STRINGS. I may just explode with tears and angst! But it will be worth it!
-
I like SikTh fairly well, they were a bit of a let-down when I saw them supporting Pitchshifter though. Especially as I went for them.
I really, really want one of those Prick-Tees 'Kerrap! Life is lame: horrifying real British metal every wednesday' shirts.
-
I saw them supporting pitchshifter as well (portsmouth), they were much better when i saw them supporting machine head. Pitchshifter however were outstanding~
-
skycamefalling.
fucking class.
-
Based on what I'm listening to right now: Star One.
Ayreon Side Project, basically. But seriously awesome. Their medley of Hawkwind tracks with Dave Brock himself on vocals is probably the finest moment of space rock. Ever.
-
I promise I'll check these out on monday on my lunch break.
It took four more days then I said but I finally am just checking them out. Awesome stuff. Reminds me of a band I saw on a friends Neurot records DVD.
-
To all Europeans seeing Eels with Strings:
Expect pants-creamingly delightful music. They played a two hour set when i saw them pretty much without stopping. Plus they're really mellow this tour (except for the part where the string quartet whipped out maracas and the Chet whipped out a bitching Epiphone and the played Dog Faced Boy harder than rock can rock), which is nice cuz the show went 'til laaaate. It is worth every penny you spent... or euro. Speaking of euros, I need a hotpocket.
-

I love Kimya Dawson. She's so sweet when she's doing a gig, and I saw her at the Brudenell which means sitting down and an intimate atmosphere. And a friend played me Smoosh in the car, it was pretty great I've been meaning to check them out more for a while. So the rest of that list will be investigated forthwith.
-
Although it's not really the sound that's really popular in the indie scene right now, I've been really digging the Black Keys as of late. Old-school blues rock done right. The band aren't top quality musicians and the guitarist can't really solo to save his life, but hell if they can't write really catchy riffs, plus there's really not much else in the scene right now that sounds quite like them. If you're not turned off right now, it'd be worth picking up their newest CD, Rubber Factory. It's pretty damned tight.
And the drummer rocks, but looks like Napoleon Dynamite with a bowl cut.
-
I'm going to plug the Residents for a third time until somebody actually listens to them.
-
If you're looking for good classic Bluesy Rock, get some stuff by the little-known but much awesomed Butterfield Blues Band. The singer isn't great, but there really isn't such thing as a good white blues singer. Maybe Roy Buchanan... Anyways, get "East West" by Butterfield. The title-track (last on the album) is one of my favorite blues jams ever.
Also, another band I wish more people had heard of (I'm sure a good portion of the UK peeps will know of) is Lemon Jelly. They make these happy little trance-ish breakbeats. They are soundtracks for life. Get the second album, "Lost Horizons" for approcimately an hour of continuous mixer-mastery, cute guitar licks, and astronauts talking in the background.
-
but there really isn't such thing as a good white blues singer.
Dan Auerbach from the Black Keys is pretty damned good for a white blues singer.
-
Captain Beefheart would make a good Blues singer... if He actually played Blues.
-
Captain Beefheart is the shit. I keep trying to find a copy of "Boogalize You"... what CD is it on?
Speaking of Beefheart, Tom Waits shoulda done much more blues in his early days. But it was all piano-sing jazz and angry jives like "Wistlin' Past The Graveyard" (which is possibly my favorite early Waits tune).
Speaking of Tom Waits, I just started up this lil' ditty:
Eyeball Kid
by Tom Waits
-
Mmmm...Tom Waits.
-
I fully agree with the mmming over Mr Waits, I think 'Jesus Gonna Be Here' proves he could sing some amazing blues. And there's a couple of Who tracks on 'My Generation' which are pretty good blues too.
'I'm Gonna Booglarize You Baby' is the first track on 'The Spotlight Kid' and it is indeed an amazing song. If you can't lay your hands on it then let me know as I could put it up on yousendit.com for you if you want, or in my soulseek folders if you have that.
-
...I really can't see how you can call Skyclad cheesy if you're salivating all over all that kitsch pop crap.
That's just a general point, I formulated it before you posted, pack.
-
Hey, even if it had been directed at me I wouldn't mind, it's a perfectly legitimate question. And here's my answer. I'm not averse to things being cheesy. I like Manowar. Hell, I like Youth of Today! But the cheesiness has to work in the benefit of the song. In the case of Manowar it's all part of that gleeful, ridiculous, fist-punching-the-air metal happiness. If it wasn't cheesy it wouldn't be nearly so much fun. With Youth of Today it adds to the naive youthful feel of the music. If they were coming across like Orchid they wouldn't be as good. But with Skyclad I didn't get any effects like that, it detracted from the impact of the social situation he was singing about without adding anything. So The Pipettes could be described as cheesy, but they stick a big smile on my face when Skyclad don't.
-
Dude, Manowar is teh SEX.
I mean for serious, I'd kill for a loincloth like that.
-
Don't forget how oily they are. It's all about the oiled-up pecs.
-
UNION YOUTH
here you can listen to some stuff from their new album to be released in june:
"yeah" (http://media.roadrunnerworld.com:8080/ramgen/UnionYouth/UnionYouth-Yeah.rm?usehostname)
"about this ride" (http://media.roadrunnerworld.com:8080/ramgen/UnionYouth/UnionYouth-AboutThisRide.rm?usehostname)
"back in the sun" (http://media.roadrunnerworld.com:8080/ramgen/UnionYouth/UnionYouth-BackInTheSun.rm?usehostname)
-
Scout Niblett. She just came out with a new cd. Enjoying it now.
-
Anything produced by Underground Operations... it's pretty much all excruciatinlgy politically motivated indie/hardcore punk or ska, and is just super fucking cool... especially The Brat Attack, Protest The Hero, Bombs Over Providence, and Closet Monster.
Also, Flashlight Brown... indie punk stuff from Canada, they are wicked in concert, and all of their songs are hilarious... such as Ready to Roll (about Advanced Dungeons and Dragons), Looking Away (About computer crashes), and Cycle (an older song of theirs about a bicycle theft).
-
Heard of:
65DoS - Monumental, their debut kicks ass. Damn their rescheduling of tours!
The Frames
Bearsuit
World Inferno Friendship Society - I really, reeeeally want to see them live. Like, now.
Dispatch - awesome, and parent-friendly. Their final DVD is wanted, by me, oh yeah.
The Lawrence Arms - exliontamer, you rock. They rock too.
Sneaker Pimps
The Pipettes - don't they have a new lass now?
DFA 1979 - Anyone else seeing them Wednesday here in Leeds?
Four Tet - totally seeing him in London in June! Wooo! Anyone seeing Prefuse 73 the night after?
Now know:
The Paper Chase - for yes!
Envy - Anyone know where I can get some samples? I am intrigued...
Recommend:
Jeniferever - Swedish (I believe) post-rock, 65DoS supported them a a BSM label show in january, really very lovely. Their 'Iris' EP is a thing of great beauty
Modey Lemon - These guys fucking kick ass live. IMHO, that is.
Vialka - Anyone actually heard of them? Absolutely bizarre...
Also much pimpage to controller.controller (kinda DFA1979-esque), An Albatross (insane), Hem (folk) and The Gossip (gospelish rock)
There ya go.
-
No! Don't mention An Albatross and Vialka! I'd already bought a ticket for Nile when their gig together was announced. And good as Nile were, I have a bad feeling I made the wrong choice. The Gossip are awesome too. Good call.
I'm going to add Spy Versus Spy to the list. Long-gone UK emo band, who for some reason went on to be in uniformly appalling bands. Their debut mini-album's stunning though.
-
Hey now, if Nile played Unas Slayer of the Gods, there's few finer gigs to be found thank you very much.
Jeniferever are alright, in my if post-rock is there I'll listen to it way. Listend to them for a while.
-
The Pipettes - don't they have a new lass now?
Yeah, the old one was apparently too bitchy to deal with...
And the new one used to riverdance for Michael Flattley.
So, you learn something new every day!
-
i wish more ppl knew about big country, tis my mates dads band that had a number of albums out in the 80s, they are local so u wud expect everyone around here to know about them, but noone does
-
Hey now, if Nile played Unas Slayer of the Gods, there's few finer gigs to be found thank you very much.
That is a tune, but actually the material from the new album was the best stuff of their set. I did enjoy them, but for one thing Vialka and An Albatross had better support bands instead of the woeful Man Must Die. Dying Fetus were decent though, rather soothing actually.
-
Yeah, I saw them on the first date of the UK tour in London (was also my birthday as well) and the new stuff was impressive. Support seemed to have been buggered for that tour, with people pulling out all over the place. We had some random but good local Death Metal act as second support. Dying Fetus where nice and brutal as I'd hoped.
Anyway, go listen to Karl Sanders' solo album, it's beautiful people.
-
I'm going to plug the Residents for a Fourth time until somebody actually listens to them.
-
Scout Niblett. She just came out with a new cd. Enjoying it now.
Hmm, I maybe commiting a hipster faux pas but I haven't heard of them. What type of music do they play and where do they usually play?
I've been going back and listening to some oldies but goodies from our local San diego bands. Three Mile Pilot, Black Heart Procession, Heavy Vegetable, Thingy, Physics, and Optiganally Yours. Of course Pinback is still good and it amazes me so many local musicians form and break up bands that most of the big local bands past & present are connected in some way but some how still manage to not sound anything like one another.
-
The Residents are from San Francisco. LISTEN TO THEM.
-
POE is awsome. Secondly, i think i have heard of mabe three of the bands mentioned in this thread. How do all you people find all this woderous music? I have had the fortune to stumble apon a few (three or four) on my own. Ex: i bought Poe's album Hello because i liked the cover. :P
-
How do all you people find all this woderous music?
I don't know about everyone else here, but there are several ways I find new music:
Recommendations from friends: this is self-explanatory for the most part, but it doesn't hurt that one of my friends is a DJ at the local college station, which means she knows pretty much everything that's going on in the scene
music stores: most good local stores often have a listening rack with a lot of new music that the folks working at the store are listening to a lot, or otherwise like. Slip the headphones on and listen to a bunch of different artists all at once...it's great
college radio: self-explanatory, but especially good here because the local college station (Radio 1190) is a damned fine station
concerts: smaller venues often have cheap tickets (like $5 to $15 a pop) so it's easy to go see a band you've never heard of and see if you like them. Also, sometimes an opening band really wows you. A band I saw a few days ago, Kiss Me Deadly, really impressed me, for example.
dive bars: the local dive, the Sundown Saloon (aka the Scumdowner) is a total indie joint. The jukebox is chock full of good indie and art rock albums, and during the week local bands are always playing gigs without a cover charge. Sitting around and drinking beer at $6 a pitcher (Yes, it's PBR. No, I don't care) while watching a band like Bright Channel or Punkalele or Swayback or Devotchka is a cheap way to spend the evening, and you get to hear some good stuff. There may be similar places in your area, too.
One place I don't find music is Pitchfork. Pitchfork pisses the shit out of me.
Jesus Wallhanging Christ, I feel like I've written a damned term paper or something.
-
Pitchfork is bad music journalism for people who are too cheap to buy bad music magazines.
-
Pitchfork is bad music journalism for people who are too self-conscious to listen to music and make up their own opinions.
Altered slightly for accuracy.

Here's something worth checking out:
YUP, Acid Mothers Temple, Juicy Panic, Yoko Kanno & the Seatbelts, Dorothy's Magic Bag, Aavikko, Moon Fog Prophet, Children of Bodom, Eläkeläiset, Viikate, The Boredoms, Rättö ja Lehtisalo, Cradle of Filth...
I'll post more after i get home and check what i forgot.

we are scientists. i fucking love these guys.
-
I don't know how obscure they are but Shivaree (http://www.shivaree.com/) are great.
Unfortunately the sample tracks on the website use some wierd executable.
This place (http://www.mp3.com/shivaree/artists/347935/songs.html) might help people find some samples.
They played the song at the end of killbill2, when uma is driving the funny old car and it's in black & white.
-
Listen to dEUS. They are awesome, and totally own live as well. Damn you, you wonderful, wonderful belgians! Should be a new album coming out sometime this year if they can be bothered to get their arses in gear, but for now, check out 'The Ideal Crash' which is the best starting point. It's like a key to the lock of all belgian rock music, as pretty much everyone has playe in dEUS at some point.
-
I wish people knew more about Against Me!, or Trenchmouth.
Please check them both out, though Trenchmouth is obscure to the point that its rare to find anything by them.
Against me just rock every orifice in my body.
-
Here's more: Impaled Nazarene, Timo Rautiainen & Trio Niskalaukaus, CMX, Painflow, Diablo, Edgar Froese (god, i love his music!), Kemopetrol, Clint Mansell, Black Mage (Nobuo Uematsu's band), Red Crayola, New York Dolls, My Bloody Valentine, Os Mutantes, Cheju, Keith, John Oil, Xhale, Liquid Stranger.
They are worthy for my ears.
Cheju, Keith, John Oil, Xhale, Liquid Stranger can be found from:
www.kahvi.org
-
It's The Black Mages, and they're a groovy little band. Unless I completely missed the mark.
-
Some band-age not nearly enough people listen to:
Roxy Music <----- This is glam rock. Fuck queen, Fuck survivor. These guys are glam.
Mr. Bungle <------ I always get the feeling that not nearly enough people listen to the greatest evil clown band in ever.
The Ditty Bops <------ Catchy, if a bit poppy, country/swing/indy with some terrific lyrics (a la clever-ass rhyming) and great guitar, banjo, and mandolin playing.
A Man Called E <------ This is the solo stuff that E of the Eels did before the band started. Some of it is really friggin' good and not nearly enough Eels fans delve into it. Symphony For The Toy Piano In G Minor is the shit.
-
Raised Fist
Kill Hannah
Bane
-
"Do you still believe? Well so do I!"
-
If you are going to mention Mr. Bungle I would include Secret Chiefs 3
-
"Do you still believe? Well so do I!"
"Was it more than words/And do they still apply?"
-
It's not possible for there to be too many songs about the awesomeness of hardcore.
-
Yes yes, I should have included SC3 as well as Fantomas. But lo, nobody's perfect.
-
I'm really not a big fan of pretty much any of Pattons work. Mr. Bungle, Tomahawk and some Fantomas were ok, but Faith No More and his work with DEP totally sucked. and his new hip-hop project is shite too.
Yeah, you all know who I think everyone should hear more of. But currently I mostly want everyone to like Dan Swano
For most people here, I recommend Nightingale. Awesome goth-tinged prog rock project he has with his brother and a few other guys. If you like metal, or can at least tolerate RAWR, then Edge of Sanity are still the greatest MDM band ever, if they even deserve to be pegged down to that. Bloodbath and Ribspreader are utterly old-school death metal that will tear you a new arsehole, then kick it. Pan.Thy.Monium is crazy, and Steel is pure balls to the walls heavy metal. Route 9 are some decent prog, and Godsend are some groovy doom, and his solo album 'Moontower' shows Dark Tranquillity how they SHOULD be using keyboard.
Seriously, Swano is so good that the metal archives allows 'The ONLY Dan Swäno solo album. Recommended for first timers with the Übermensch.' as the description for Moontower.
-
i wish more ppl knew about big country, tis my mates dads band that had a number of albums out in the 80s, they are local so u wud expect everyone around here to know about them, but noone does
I love Big Country, saw them 3 times in Edinburgh in the 80's, what are they doing now, didn't one of them die?
I wish more people had heard of Stephen Fretwell (curently touring with KT Tunstall) seen him twice, he's Fooking ace, accoustic or with his full band.
Mike Baillie a local lad from Edinburgh is also pretty good, cant find any info on the net about him though. Bought his Album in Feb when he was supporting Stephen and its really good.
-
Furslide.
chick namer jennifer turner, good guitarist, great voice. mm tasty lyrics. they broke up or something and she went to a band called inner, which i have not been able to find anywhere. damn this scene.
Lysander. check it out at http://www.lysrock.com download the EP for free.
bassist was my roommate last year, they fall short of sucking
-
Definently not going to try and read every post, but I wish more people knew about The Dismemberment Plan. Seriously, for a band that basically REVOLUTIONIZED Indie Rock (or Rock in general), they sure aren't as well-known as I would hope.
I'm sure SOMEONE has mentioned them somewhere in this maelstrom, though. ;P
-
Much as I do love the Plan, do you really think they were all that revolutionary?
-
I don't want to be that annoying fanboy guy, but they did do something to the Indie scene. I guess you could say they made spastic, multi-genre punk cool. XP
OMG there's a tribute.
http://www.stylusmagazine.com/feature.php?ID=62
This will be the last of my gushing. I hate it when one person oogles over their favorite band constantly.
Song of the moment...
Payroll - Mock Orange
From Emo to Pavement/Modest Mouse/Built to Spill. Their album "Mind is Not Brain" is awesome.
-
Oh, they certainly had a hefty impact, and god damn they couldn't half knock out a great tune to dance to while they were doing it. And they sang about a 'throw down autonomous zone'. Now that's the kind of thing I like to hear!
