Title: Announcing: The AnthroPC Handbook
Post by: Sionide on 02 May 2005, 06:50
Hello everyone...

From the creator of the QC Wallpaper Gallery (http://xrl.us/qcwallpaper) - comes a new creation exclusively for the QC community.

Presenting......

The AnthroPC Handbook (http://www.sionide.net/anthropc/)

Inspired by countless (http://forums.questionablecontent.net/viewtopic.php?t=4999) topics here in the forums about how AnthroPCs actually work, for example their connectivity, disk drives, system specs etc. - The AnthroPC Handbook is a place for everyone to jot down their ideas on this new generation of Personal Computer :)

There's obviously not much there right now, but it's a Wiki - so if you can think of an article or page you'd like to write about AnthroPCs then go ahead.

Make your way to http://www.sionide.net/anthropc/

Be creative, be imaginative, be technical. I know you're all so good at that!! Comments and suggestions most welcome, I need someone to create a logo for the top left-hand corner too!

Anyway, that's that. So.... Enjoy.

:) :D :)

hmmm... a section on "interacting with you AnthroPC" with example dialogs would be useful...

and and modifications you could make, including precautions to take if your AnthroPC doesn't like them. (reference to one of pintsize's friends who was painted and given a glass panelled chest)

i was reading the handbook and noticed that it says that anthropc's cant conume food, but there is  a strip in which pintsize eats spaghetti sauce and then poops it out all over the couch. there is also an explanation of how he can taste things, but it must be his new chassis that allows him to eat things now. i will have to look up the strip and try my hand at writing something unless someone else gets to it first

the strip i am talking about is this one after faye cuts her hand and has to have stitches

_grace_ - go for it, write about it... make it up! it'll be cool..

kaidia avari - yep, we need to build on stuff like this then... edit it out and replace it with what it should be!!

I just sorted out the main page.. bit of a tidy up. Added things to new pages instead of using the main page for everything, looks better now. Check out the disclaimer, hehe.

added some stuff about clothes, tidied up the grammar in the section on lasers, added an introduction paragraph, and came up with the concept of "AnthrOS" - the operating system.

Haha!! Switchblade you rock!! I knew you'd like this ;)

Any budding artists out there come up with a logo for it??

You have a 135x135 canvas to work with (.png format, please use transparent background) Ideally it should have a picture of pintsize and the words "AnthroPC Handbook" on it...

Wanted to see if transparency held, and if text was legible before adding any more stuff in, and having to do it all over....

Though... that DOES look good like that....

Feedback, Questions, comments, all appreciated.

Uhh... Okay, if it gets slash dotted and swamped with hits I'll have to take it offline, my bandwidth isn't limitless...

That's why I was hoping jeph wouldn't link it from the main site! (He hasn't yet)

This month in the first 6 days, I shifted more bandwidth than the entire month of Jan.

No worries though, I probably won't take it down - it's too cool.

Edit: Forget that, there's a possibility i'll be getting upgraded to 50gb a month so :P
Title: Announcing: The AnthroPC Handbook
Post by: lb969 on 09 May 2005, 18:36
If you do get swamped i MAY be able to get my buddy to let me scam some space from his server.

I'd be a ProQStudio.net address tho....

and it would have to be PHP.....

PS:
If you like what you see at ProQ, i can do/redo the graphics for your page.
I do site design, web graphics, and a small amount of programming (PHP, http, and Java)

Heh, not that many...

Anyway, it matters not! I scored a 50gb /month dedicated server.. No worries at all. Once it's on there, I'd be prepared for linkage off the news postings I reckon, I'll get in touch with Jeph when the time comes!

The handbook needs technical diagrams, showing the location of the holding tank, laser, power supply, RAM, etc.

And not diagrams done in Paint, either.

No, someone has just been mindlessly deleting things. Vandalising a wiki is NOT cool.

Would people mind if I enabled having to register to make changes? It doesn't take 2 seconds to register and it makes it easier to ban people and stuff like that. It would at least help with the problem...

It's either someone from this board, someone who found the link through the wikipedia page or a bot. You think I should take the link off the wikipedia? :(

Edit: I think I've fixed it and from the look of things, it was someone who didn't know what they were doing because previously they made some good edits. So, please be careful and don't wipe the pages whoever you are!

Ok i added a rough Malicous Software page but i'm afraid in the process i made a bit of mess. There are two pages "Virus" and "Malicios Software" which are dead and empty atm. They should probably be deleted, sorry :(

Keep adding to it as much as you can! I'm sure the 'underwear' incident from todays strip can be worked in somewhere ;)
Title: Announcing: The AnthroPC Handbook
Post by: Sydney on 23 Jun 2005, 15:03
i like your additions, very good.
Hopefully i can add some more fluid stuff this weekend, i was mildy distracted while typing that page by a headache that laste on and of for about a week (some of us get all the luck :-/)
I do hope the underwear incedent can get worked in somewhere.

(edit)
Added a brief and rough note to clothing (influenced by todays strip). Needs refining for sure. (resist temptation to say "fo sho")

A syblings section needed? Owning more than one AnthroPC, brothers, sisters, arguing, ganging up on you/unsuspecting passers by ,etc.
Should fit under the "Relationships" heading i guess. Maybe create a "social" parent section, put everything else, sub-pages and all underneath it?

( edit (again) )

There was a mention somewhere (i think) of AnthroPCs being bisexual (reference to ps's last packet sharing session) somewhere but i can't seem to find it now, anyone help? Wanted to mention c3po (cus he's gay) and ps2 bots (also gay) (i'm sure someone will get the reference)

Yeah, I put in the vibrating chassis. I also added a little something to the cleaning you're AnthroPC section, what to do if it wakes up while you're taking the head off. You know what might be good, a downloads section, or the like. Maybe various programs to make your AnthroPC more fun.

I was thinking, things like the OED. Make scrabble more of a challenge by storing every word in the english language on your AnthroPC's hard drive. Or if you're not that good, the OED, abridged version.

Put in the downloads section, to tired to do much with it now. Go for it people, invent programs. Oh, and the links that I put there are real, try them.

P.S. Sorry about jacking your credit switchblade. I only meant that I had put in the words vibrating chassis. All hail switchblade for the awesome stuff below that.

I LIKE[/i] those words...

Yeah, no problem dude.

Anyway, I tweaked the "warning" in the accessories section, and added the following to the "Relationships" section:

Quote
AnthroPCs running AnthrOS versions IV and earlier have been shown to develop certain personality disorders if not outfitted with clothing (see our section on Accessories.) Although this problem is being adressed in AnthrOS V, it is strongly recommended that, if your AnthroPC exhibits the symptoms of this glitch, you download the "naturist" AnthroPersonality. This will temporarily resolve the conflict, but will leave your PC with an insatiable desire to listen to John Lennon.

EDIT'd toavoid double posting'd...

Turns out the chassis with a laser is in fact a prototype M-31 battelfield robot chassis (thankyou comic 147). Trivia fixage in process.

EDIT v2.0: fixed. I got a little creative.

Jeph i want to draw some pint-size variations (for a list of models offered by "Anthri Corp or whatever we called them).

Can you tell me how come everything antialiases nicely for you and how you draw perfect pintsizes with no pixely look? I'm gonna guess you start with a 10000087037037x07992737838 image and scale down with some cool program that scales everthing just right which i don't have and will never have. You use ane elipse drawing thing for some parts don't you :p.

Basically, my webhost migrated my entire website to a better server and in doing so a couple of things mucked up. The gallery has been fixed, so the QC wallpapers are all safe, my blog has been fixed but I'm not sure how to fix the wiki - I'm not experienced with the software.

I think that when your server migrated it screwed up the coding at these points (lines 22 and 27)

More specifically your new setup does not include "/home/sites/sionide.net/www/anthropc/skins"

I'd go in and try to remake the file with your new directories.

No sionide, i was serious, Skin.php isn't at that path. Thats about all i can think of. So you gotta put a new path in. The right one. I would try to help but i don't know the code so i can't. Unless you paste a little extract of that page, tell us the url of the page and the url of Skin.php that might help.

OMFG IM SO STUPID!!! I realised this in the cold light of day*, while i was in school, but QC is blocked by some stupid filter crap, so i couldn't post....
The error is in the page Skin.php (Which really is there.. uhm, i think?) on line 22 it references /home/sites/sionide.net/www/anthropc/skins which is the directory path used by the old web server. The new one uses /home/sionide/public_html/anthropc/skins
You could just open up Skin.php, go to line 22 (or there about-ish) and replace home/sites/sionide.net/www/anthropc/skins with home/sionide/public_html/anthropc/skins.
I imagine you will run into more errors like this though, so maybe you need to mess with the wiki config or you might even need to re-install the wiki (erk, be carefull with this, backup THE WHOLE THING first.) I don't really know because i have NEVER tried to run a wiki. You could always go around changing EVERY reference to home/sites/sionide.net/www to home/sionide/public_html but that could take a while, or it might only take ten minutes.

*Well it was cold this morning, but actually i was in the toasty warm computer room and the sunlight (shining on the moniter because the blinds are broken) was quite pleasent and warming.

I am a computer engineering student and robotics hobbyist who is working on a project that I think the readers of this thread would be interested in.  For the past year I have been working on developing a simple biped walking robot.  I recently got the idea to apply my work to developing a working prototype of an AnthroPC.  Right now I am focusing on creating a stable walking pattern that fits within Pintsize's design constraints.  Once this is accomplished, I plan on adding components to give the robot a personality.  My hope is that this prototype can become a platform for me to apply what I learn in school in an entertaining manner.

Its near impossible though. Pintsize is a top heavy bugger, since most of the electronics are going to have to go inside his head. Also, his feet are the most useless shape imaginable, and his body is a aproximately a cube, little more than 120mm.  Getting ANY kind of bipedal robot to stand up and walk properly is a pain in the arse, and getting a pintsize to support itself would require as much processing power as a segway uses, since the design has no stable standing position. You can count the number of off the shelf PC designs that will fit that chassis size on the fingers of a blind butchers hand anyway, so theres essentially no room for the movement processors, the servos, and the batteries.

As for an AI? your going to get as far as a glorified eliza, nothing more.

The anthro PC is probably 20 or 30 years away, but one day we will see things like the sony abio evolve to that level. Right now its just a fictional character in a webcomic.

First of all, the fact that Pintsize is top heavy does not necessarily make walking impossible.  In fact, humans are top heavy, and we do a very good job of walking.  The key is shifting the weight to the right place above the feet.  Also, I will not be using feet that are shaped exactly like Pintsize's.  I plan on using hemispheres with flat bottoms.  Much of the electronics for balance and basic motion control will fit into the feet and torso leaving the head free for sensors, voice recognition circuits, a processor, etc.  My goal in this project is not to make an exact replica of Pintsize, for I agree, that is nearly impossible right now.  I can, however, use the Pintsize design as a base to experiment with things such as AI and human/robot interaction.

I've drawn up some diagrams to show what I've been talking about.  Yellow lines are for servos, gray lines are brackets and aluminum tubing, and the cyan is the outer shell.  The first picture is the robot in a standing position, and the second picture is the robot shifting its weight before a step.

Accessing the web.archive.org page under Firefox doesn't (quite) work --- you get the base page, but all the subheading links refer back to sionide.net, which still comes up with that same redirection error others have noted.   Accessing the archive page with IE7 (or using an IE tab under FF if you have that extension) *works* because all the links on the base page are altered on-the-fly to their web.archive.org counterparts!  It's IE chauvanism!

Now, I have to wonder if sionide.net will respond to IE7 acesss, because everyone who's complained had been using (the uber-cool) Firefox.  (EDIT:  It doesn't.   It sits there, spins its wheels forever, as Firefox anticipated )

Just want to say, I only allow IE7 on my systems as passive defense, to incorporate and include M$'s  manyfold security patches...or for when is really is the only program that can be used....

So, what's the deal?  Busted PHP program?   Would updating that help?  More daily vandalism?  Has Sionide given up?

Hi everybody
i cant believe someone hasn't done this already, but since Sionide lost his mysql database entires (as said on his blog) and he hasn't bothered to re-create the media wiki, I've re-created it here

http://anthropc.freehostia.com

Now obvisouly this is just a cut and paste job from the webarchive.org backup that battyone gave. and i deserve no praise. But this it at least gives us a starting point again, instead of starting from scratch
it also allows everyone to view it, reguardless of Web Browser Choice.

there are some limitations and things to note to the media wiki I set up.

-THERE IS CURRENTLY A BUG, clicking on the edit links on the side of the pages DOSE NOT WORK, click the "edit" tab at the top of the page in order to change something, i will look into fixing this shortly
-due to filesize limits by my host, image uploading is disabled
-account creation necessary for editing (to prevent vandalism)
-Wiki Formating needs to be done in most (if not all) of the Pages due to formatting being lost in the webarchive backup
-A Logo needs to be made

I am perfectly willing to re-locate the wiki to a better server if anyone offers

Obivously up untill this point all the edits have been done by me, but i encourge the original Authors of the pages/sections to re-edit, or comment their work
Please inform me of any other problems you run into with the wiki (since this is my first time setting one up)

Oh.... Wow.

I didn't realise people were still trying to play with the AnthroPC Handbook!

Yes, the webserver my site used to be hosted on bombed a while back and I never re-created the media-wiki hosting the Handbook. It was getting bombarded with so much spam too and rarely any proper updates.

If there's call for it, I'll make it again! It was just a bit of fun.. I had no idea people were still after it!!

--------

Edit: Great work resurrecting the Handbook Matty3d! I notice the freehostia.com site is fairly slow though. If you don't mind, I'll re-deploy media wiki on my server and people can contribute just like old times.. :)

Edit 2: It's back up and running! http://sionide.net/anthropc/ (http://sionide.net/anthropc/)

:-D Update: This time I've set a spam blacklist and a few other anti-spam measures. So hopefully we won't see the wiki drowning in spam... The easy solution is the lazy solution, just restricting it so only registered users can edit but that's hassle for you guys who might just want add something funny you've thought of. By all means make yourself an account though..

Update 2: It appears the original AnthroPC Handbook Logo has been lost in the midsts of time... So, this is a call for talented peoples to come up with a new logo for us!!

Title: Re: Announcing: The AnthroPC Handbook
Post by: Matty3d on 08 May 2008, 00:45
Thanks Sionide for recreating it, freehostia is free.. hence its slower,  but now i understand what you ment by the spam, someone had edited the front page with spam again, i took the liberty of fixing it. I really think forcing login is a better way to go, it means anyone who wants to edit the wiki has to go through the trouble of signing up to do it, instead of just clicking the edit button. Anyone who seriously wants to contribute wont mind it, but someone who just wants a quick edit to spam will be less inclinded to do so.
Ill keep my copy running for backup purposes.

also, if anyone wants to tackle this problem for the wiki, maybe someone can try explaining that even though AnthroPC's are appearantly made by Apple, why do they use Windows (dos/NT) fileing structure? (as denoted by the title of this comic http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=964)
Apple OS's paths normally look like "/localhost/Users/anthropc/mp3/indianijonestheme.mp3"

also strange that jeff would make this mistake with the comic since he uses a Mac to draw QC
http://www.questionablecontent.net/tutorial.php (of course its possible he ment to title it that way)

After the "birth" the "Child" will go through all 6 patented stages of childhood existance audioaninfancy, toddler file, child.html, tween disk, run.moody//find:teen, and finally man-childom. After this stage they will thank their respective parental units, and send them nice e-vites to their own childrens various inconvienient events. Now this is a difficult, expensive, and unrewarding project, so don't say we didn't warn you. You can also install diferant idols and music tastes into your child anthropc's , allowing them to rock out more awesomly then normal anthropcs. Be warned however that if you install the following: any member of the who, rush, jimi hendrix, eric clapton, bb king, nirvana, the allmen bros, santanna or eddie van halen as their idols, and supply them with music, they will gather their friends, dress up as the respective musicians, rock out perfectly , there will be an enourmous influx of the EPICxion particle into the enstienion, chronoton feild, and then the universe will implode as a result. Making their idol the dave mathews band will do the oppisite of the major rockign"

That is all, thanks guys and please put this on the wiki

I added some stuff, but you need to lock the main page or it's not coming back. Spam comes in every single minute to that page.
