Well, the other night, I saw "Fearless Freaks" which is a movie about the Flaming Lips. It was really good, especially since I like them a lot. We had to drive to Cambridge to see it in this little theatre, though.
So, what movies about bands (or starring members of bands, a la Help!) have you seen? And how were they?
Sorry if there was already a topic similar to this, I've never seen anything like it myself, though.

Istrument
Fucking FUGAZI!!!!!!!! Worth just the live footage alone!
-
Instrument is amazing. I'm also a big fan of Smoke which Jem Cohen also made about the incredible Benjamin Smoke. It's pretty depressing though, it was such a loss when he died.
However, Rock 'N' Roll High School starring the Ramones is probably the greatest band movie of all time. It's a cheap Corman exploitation number but actually has a real innocent charm to it, and a lot of Ramones songs. Also worth mentioning is the absolute height of camp which is the Village People movie. Steve Guttenburg actually manages to look gayer than the band!
-
You wouldn't believe it, but yes, somehow Guttenburg manages it. At one point he's sporting the smallest shorts known to mankind. Sheer genius.
-
i've seen 'stop making sense' by the talking heads.. the concept was quite good, but i didn't know enough of the songs to truly enjoy it
EDIT: i forgot about the big suit.. it rocks my world
-
24 Hour Party People. Best movie ever made. Bonus points for being about the best band ever.
-
try the commitments. freaking aweosme movie.
-
o yea the commitments was great. i don't think i've seen any other band movies. i'll have to get on that...
-
1. Zappa & The Mothers: 200 Motels
2. The Monkees: Head
3. repeat
-
GUITAR WOLF - WILD ZERO poor bass wolf...
-
SPICE WORLD, Yeah! WOO!
-
o my god how could i forget about spice world! hell yes that is the coolest campiest movie EVER
-
Stop Making Sense is amazing. The Talking Heads rule.
-
Tommy.
The Wall.
-
Backbeat, it's about the Beatles in Berlin, and the original bassist.
-
1. Zappa & The Mothers: 200 Motels
Stop Making Sense is amazing. The Talking Heads rule.
Quoted for fucking emphasis.
-
BAAAAND ON THE RUUUUN
-
What about the Rolling Stones live at Altamonte.
Watching that guy get stabbed at the end by a Hells Angel was awesome.
-
EDIT: i forgot about the big suit.. it rocks my world
Seriously, why did the big suit never come into fashion? There are plenty of other styles derived from music! ;)
On the subject of Talking Heads, David Byrne's "True Stories" is kind of intriguing. It's no "Stop Making Sense", but that's not what it's supposed to be, even though it does have music by Talking Heads on the soundtrack.
-
The Wall.
Though I don't know if it actually counts as a band movie, The Wall is effing incredible.
Signum: You've seen the clip of Jagger watching that footage later, right? It's the most sober I've ever seen the fellow.
-
The Last Waltz
-
try the commitments. freaking aweosme movie.
You're awesome! Oh wait, I'm totally not good at this internet thing. I meant to say "We're totally getting married. FAP FAP FAP." Sorry, I'm still learning.
(seriously is a good movie, I have the soundtrack around here too)
o my god how could i forget about spice world! hell yes that is the coolest campiest movie EVER
Meatloaf as the bus driver. Score.
Anyway, I'm torn between The Last Waltz and Black & White Night with Roy Orbison.
-
The best thing about the Commitments is that singer. That guy has an amazing voice. I never tire of that movie, I see it every year or two and it still seems fresh.
-
They Might Be Giantsaruuuu! Gigantic was a great documentary, and one hell of a dvd package. Check it out!
Tommy.
Good album, horrible film. Just.... just horrible. Oliver Reed can't sing, and resolving the story so clearly when the album hinged on the ambiguity was a terrible idea. And there's only so much of Daltrey's blasted mug i can put up with.
The Wall.
Yeah, it rocked :)
-
DIG! starring the Dandy Warhols and the Brian Jonestown Massacre. Anton Newcombe is totally crazy, and it makes for a great doco. Lots of great music, with the added fun of drugs. Whoo!
-
Spinal Tap.
Fricken Funny
(Yes I know its a parody) (did you?)
-
try the commitments. freaking aweosme movie.
Damn right.
Also I like some of the other films that have been said like
24 Hour Party People
Dig!
Spinal Tap
and Instrument
-
Does Spinal Tap count? The band was originally fictional.
-
If we're gonna count Spinal Tap, then you gotta throw Blues Brothers in there, too.
P.S. My amp goes to 11. :D
-
Tommy.
The Wall.
Hell yeeeeaaaah.
Also, music-realated, Easy Rider, and music and hippies Woodstock: The Directors Cut.
EDIT: If Spinal Tap can make it, THE RUTTLES! (or whatever the movie was called)
-
P.S. My amp goes to 11. :D
Marshall JCM900s go to 20 :)
-
I took a sharpie and wrote 11 on mine. :/
-
The Clash On Broadway or Westway to the World
-
24 Hour Party People. Best movie ever made. Bonus points for being about the best band ever.
I really couldn't get into it. There were some cool bits, but it was actually pretty slow and boring for me.
Band movies I enjoy:
Hard Days night makes me laugh my ass off.
Closure = Awesome
And all that Could have been = Amazing
that thing you do = win.
-
Hard Days night makes me laugh my ass off.
Same here. "She looks more like him than I do!"
-
"Repo Man" is not a "band movie", however the Circle Jerks cameo is awesome beyond words.
"I can't believe I used to like these guys."
I fucking love that movie so much.
Edit: Damn, I forgot the greatest documentary ever... "Hated: GG Allin and the Murder Junkies". How Todd Philips went from a documentary about the craziest man in the history of rock 'n' roll to "Old School" is anybody's guess.
"Bite it you scum, here I come."
-
SCHUWL OF ROQ!!!1
-
I Am Trying To Break Your Heart
I really liked this documentary, am I the only one?
-
If we're gonna count Spinal Tap, then you gotta throw Blues Brothers in there, too.
P.S. My amp goes to 11. :D
We're on a mission from god.
-
Since it seems we are allowing imaginary bands
That Thing You Do
whenever I see Interpol's Daniel, i think of That Thing You Do when they have to quickly find a replacement bass player and while they play on tv it flashes 'wolfman - scary'
-
Does Spinal Tap count? The band was originally fictional.
If Spinal Tap counts, A Mighty Wind should also count.
-
And don't forget The Last Polka.
