Title: Voice Communication (for gamers!)

So, we've had some talk about playing Guild Wars, etc.  Some of the more hardcore gamers out there will have a mic on their desk, and can use it for voice communication.  I've been doing this for about seven years now, and cannot play without it.  If you want to join in the fun (and have the requisite mic), here's what to do.

1) Download Ventrilo (http://files.nihilist.ca/Apps/ventrilo-2.1.4-Windows-i386.exe)
2) Install it
3) Create a user profile
4) Create a server profile with the following information (no password required):
Hostname: vent.wsbw.net
Port: 3784
5) To hop in the Guild Wars channel, you'll be prompted for a password.  'mulenuts' (minus the quotes) is the way to go.

Note:  Click the 'setup' button, then click on the 'Global' tab.  Make sure 'check for new version' is UNCHECKED.  Or you'll continually get a harassing message.

Another note:  My Vent name is 'Mike L'.

Skype isn't really meant for this.  And TeamSpeak doesn't have nice quality compared to Vent.

I much prefer Teamspeak. Vent makes me lag like a paralysed donkey with no legs.

What kind of bandwidth do you need to be sitting on for ventrilo to work nicely?

You'll want at least 56k, though I've only really used it on cable/DSL.  The more people that you have talking at once, the more bandwidth you'll need.

The only problem I had with it last night was I could barely hear Muhr.  Other than that it worked VERY well.

Oh... well... at one point it gave me a sound error, but all I had to do was reboot it, change some of my settings, and it should be good to go from now on.

I much prefer teamspeak as well, but that CS:S server I posted, it has vent ant TS as far as I know.

about that server is claims it's still using 2.1.2? Are they just being retro or can I just change some settings to get in anyway?

I was playing a lot of CS : S before my computer died and teamspeak all the way, easy to use, once it's open its unobtrusive and no brainer to set up

It's not retro, it's free.  There was a fucked up license introduced with 2.2 that involved going to find a hosting company and pay for it.  We wanted to purchase our own server, but they only sell them in seats of 1000.  (WTF.)  Anyway, if you want to run both versions, like I do, install one version, then zip it up.  Uninstall it, install the other version.  Rename it, unzip the original version.  Voila, both.  :)
