Title: stephen malkmus (and the jicks)
Post by: spizzletrunk on 19 May 2005, 12:51
I shall be seeing SM&Jix on June 9th in Cleveland.  I'm wondering what kind of show I can expect to see since I've never seen them live before, and if anybody else is hitting up his concerts this summer.  Eh?

I'm new to forums, by the way.  Hi!

Tour dates are at matadorrecords/tours.  Not very many, though.  Most of them are in June, and he was kind enough to cover most of the major US cities.

crap... they don't even get close to Texas.  That makes me sad.

They have a new album coming out in a couple of weeks don't they?

Yeah, it's called Face the Truth.  It leaked online last month, and I daresay it's pretty damn good.  Just not what you would be expecting, and not nearly as good as Pig Lib.

You can expect it to rock. I saw them open for Radiohead a couple years ago. It was before I'd really listened to Pavement (I wouldn't have recognized the name Stephen Malkmus).

Actually, I can't think of anything spectacular about the show itself other than the music. They might not be the best at showman(/woman)ship, but if you have a good audience and like the music, it'll be an awesome show anyway.

Three words of advice: GO SEE THEM!
Dude, for real.
I saw them...um...2? years ago (whenever Pig Lib was released) in Cleveland, coincidentally and at the Beachland Ballroom (http://www.beachlandballroom.com/), coincidentally.  Seeing you're from Pa, I doubt you've been there.  Great little venue.  It used to be a Polish/Slovakian/some other Euro-ethnic meeting hall.  So the place has character to it.  But onto the topic at hand.  Yes, SM & the Jicks rocked the house down.  I've enjoyed both of his solo releases and I'm anticipating the third.  The one thing I liked about them was that they didn't take themselves too seriously.  They closed out the show with a blistering rendition of "Jenny and the Ess-Dog" which turned into a big jam session that featured one of the band members climbing the drum set while jamming on the cow bell.  One thing that is guaranteed by them: a good time will be had by all.

Man I really wanted to see them. Unfortunately, they are playing the same time as Wilco with The Roots, in LA, and that's too exciting to pass up

the beachland ballroom is an awesome venue.  i saw idlewild there two years ago - rocked the place.
too bad the jicks show is before school gets out for me - i doubt i'll be able to get down there in the middle of exam week. :(
