Title: The 'Must Have' List
Post by: JJMitchell on 09 Jun 2005, 11:00
So, being a complete indy n00b, was wondering if there is a list somewhere that people would recommend for listening.

I'm cheap and don't like buying CDs, so I'm looking just for those albums that people would definitely recommend.

Now I know that there is no definitive list, but if enough people say 'You HAVE to listen to this' I'll do it.

Also, isn't this totally not indy?  I shoot!  I score!

I'm not sure that they're at all the same thing. I don't consider the Recommended Listening page as a list of the essential indie albums that everyone should have heard, especially as I think all of the records on there were released in the last 5 or so years

Mission of Burma - Signals, Calls And Marches
Slint - Spiderland
The Jesus And Mary Chain - Psychocandy
Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
The Replacements - Let It Be
Mudhoney - Superfuzz Bigmuff

All those are considered fairly essential 'indie' albums by a lot of people, and as good a place to start as any other.

Keep it Like a Secret - Built to Spill
Emergency & I - The Dismemberment Plan
Source Tags & Codes - And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead
Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain - Pavement
The Moon and Antarctica - Modest Mouse
Funeral - Arcade Fire
Mind is Not Brain - Mock Orange
Something About Airplanes - Death Cab for Cutie
Turn on the Bright Lights - Interpol
Mellow Gold - Beck
Relationship for Command - At the Drive-In
Deloused in the Commatorium - The Mars Volta

I'd recommend Frances the Mute (TMV), but it might be too much for someone just starting out.

I second the recommendation of psychocandy and crooked rain, crooked rain...pure awesomeness.  Also the following:

Air - Moon Safari
The Decemberists - Picaresque
The Dresden Dolls- S/t
Elliott Smith - Either/Or
Any album by The Mountain Goats
Any other Pavement album

Agreed.  Not only that, but also it is biased by Jeph's personal tastes.  Not to say his personal tastes are bad, but he does leave off some stuff I'd consider essential.

A good example would be the Velvet Underground.  There is no excuse for liking indie music and not listening to VU at least once or twice.  NO excuse.  AT ALL.  WHATSOEVER.  VU are brilliant, they are catchy, and they pretty much set the stage for everyone, everyone, EVERYONE in the entire genre.  Jeph's excuse that he "doesn't listen to anything more than 10 years old because there's so much good stuff out now already" doesn't really cut it in my book.  I still listen to stuff like Coltrane and the Duke and various classical (especially the Russian composers...Tchaikovsky brought the rock more than most indie bands, for example) and that's definitely older than a decade.  There's nothing wrong with going out and picking up a classic album like Piper at the Gates of Dawn or Velvet Underground and Nico just because it came out more than a decade ago.  Please.  Songs about gnomes and heroin and bikes are all the rage...why not go back and listen to the masters?

Also, there are albums Jeph just doesn't like that he doesn't include.  At the Drive In's Relationship of Command and The Mars Volta's Deloused in the Comatorium are both what I would consider essential even if you don't like that sort of thing.  I would probably have to include the Decemberists or The Postal Service on an essentials list even though I don't really like either band.  Similarly, ATDI and TMV are essential parts of the current music scene even if you don't like them (well,  ATDI less so, now that they broke up, but certainly TMV).

Also, I dunno how big they are in the indie acene, but I've been hearing a lot about the Black Keys lately, from folks who are pretty involved in the scene.  Also, I think they're awesome.  So, definitely...

The Black Keys - Rubber Factory

If you like rock or you like blues or you like any combination of the two, you will love these guys.  They bring the sex like Hendrix did once upon a time.

*high-fives for intense awesomeness*

VU is essential to EVERYONE. It's a shame that so many people don't know of them. "OMG IS TAT VELVET REVOLVER?"

Anyway, I would have picked those two, but since he was just starting out...

Also, just FYI.  Piper at the Gates of Dawn is early Pink Floyd (prior to when Syd Barret left and recorded his  solo stuff, then turned into an orange).  Piper and Ummamagumma are great.  Also, so is Barret's solo stuff, like Saucerful of Secrets.

Just FYI, you know.

I like Piper, but Wish You Were Here and Dark Side of the Moon were brilliant albums. No matter how "overrated" people may say DSotM is, it's still great.

I never liked Syd barrett.

Their early stuff is pretty much identical to a lot of current indie stuff.  They became epic psychadelic only with Meddle.

Also, every Pink Floyd album after The Wall pretty much sucked.  Whether the Wall sucked is debatable, but I'd have to argue that it probably did.

Their best album was Animals, hands down.

But, back to indie essentials...

I'd say they're pretty essential listening given their influence, whether or not you actually like them. Personally I don't really rate Psychocandy, but it is something of an indie classic and a very influential record, so I thought I'd include it as a recommendation.

But for something I do love, let's delve a little into the side of hardcore that was most influential on indie rock:
Fugazi - Red Medicine
Shellac - At Action Park
Big Black - Songs About Fucking
Minutemen - Double Nickels On The Dime

Here's what I recommend. Pick up as many label samplers and odd compliations you can find. You'll find cool bands that way. Don't worry about genere and some wil indeed suck, but at least then you found it all on your own. Either that or listen to apackofwolves.

A bit of a change-up:

Eels - Electro-shock Blues
Radiohead - O.K. Computer (not indy, just amazing)
The Sugarplastic - Bang, The Earth Is Round
The New Pornographers - Electric Version
Ambulance Ltd. - Ambualnce Ltd.
Spoon - Telephono (extremely rare, but it's the first album of it's type of brash, staticy post rock that a helluva lotta bands have started ripping off)
Pinback - Blue Screen Life
The Violent Femmes - The Violent Femmes

Many more... but these are all terrific.

The Residents - Meet The Residents, Third Reich N' Roll, Eskimo, Not Available, Fingerprince, Commercial Album, Freak Show, Wormwood, Animal Lover.

Frank Zappa - Apostrophe* is a good place to start.

Captain Beefheart - Anything but Bluejeans and Moonbeams and Unconditionally Guarenteed.

Not indie, but it's better than all indie music combined and multiplied by 6.

I'd definitely say go with The Dismemberment Plan's Emergency & I. First indie album I had ever listened to, and just got HOOKED. It has such amazing lasting value. It's catchy lively enough to get into and still quite different than what would one find on the radio. Hmm how would one call them? "Emo?" =P They have that ocassional self-pitying lyric but they are not like RAWR I AM DEPRESSED, and have more upbeat music. I can't describe it well, there's just something so fascinating about them like they have the essence of a 20 something year old's life encapsulated into a little disc full of the dejection, the excitement, the lust, and the wonders of it all. It's gorgeous.

Tracks to check out from that album: You Are Invited, Spider in the Snow, A Life of Possibilities.

2. The Smiths - The Queen is Dead
3. Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
4. Can - Tago Mago
5. The Stooges - Fun House
6. My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
7. David Bowie - Hunky Dory

don't forget the GBV.  indie kids love that drunken bastard, bob pollard.
"Under the Bushes, Under the Stars" was a pretty damn cool album.

the first time i saw guided by voices, there were cases of budweiser snaking their way through the crowd to be delivered to the band.  i think bob was responsible for at least one of those cases being drunk during the set.

Phill Niblock - Young Person's Guide to Phill Niblock
Masonna - Frequency LSD
Autechre - Gantz Graf
William Basinski - The Disintegration Loops
Kneale.Francis.Milton - Hiss Methodologies
Sunn 0))) - White-1

That's all accessible, entry-level, upbeat sing-along indie pop. All of it.
Seriously.

Not really. Instead, I second (thrid?) At the Drive-in - Relationship of Command. Jeph hates it, but that's because sometimes Jeph is a bad, bad man.
I'd do more, but i figure if I just plug one, there's more chance you'll check it out. Big lists are very intimidating.

I echo the sentiments about Cursive.

Rival Schools is also fun.

I wish to vastly expand the recommendation of Far to "Anything Jonah Matranga has ever done". Check out Far, New End Original, onelinedrawing, and his new (and super awesome) project, Gratitude.

Much as I do like that record and Something To Write Home About. if we're talking emo that's not the essentials. These are:
Rites of Spring - Rites of Spring
Dag Nasty - Can I Say
Moss Icon - discography
Embrace - Embrace
Track down some of The Hated if you can, I heard Troubleman might do a discog sometime but god knows when that'll surface and all their records are not only out of press but ebay gold.

Matranga has the same problem as Schreifels in that both of them have been in steadily worse bands all their lives. So Far and Gorilla Biscuits are essentials, New End Original and Project X are good but you don't need anything after that (okay, maybe Quicksand for Schreifels). Particularly not Gratitude or whatever that godawful new thing Schreifels is peddling is called. Walking Concert maybe? Whatever, they're bad, avoid. Listen to Start Today a lot instead, and remember the days when he had talent.

*GASP* Allow me to disagree vehemently over the inner nets! While I will agree that New End Original isnt Jonahs best work (though a number of his best songs, including "14-41" and "Hostage" came from this period), onelinedrawing is the Pinnicle of the jonah experience, as it is just him and R2D2 on stage. If you havent seen Jonah solo, you have not lived.

BUT!

I really cannot grasp how you could say Gratitude is not good. I mean really, I am dumbfounded. I am not one to argue with one about their own personal taste in music, but really the only thing i can think of is that you are a fan of Far, and not Jonah Matranga (in which case, have you checked out Shaun Lopez' new project, The Revolution Smile?). Gratitude is, in my opinion, Jonahs best work to date. Comparing Gratitude to Far musically  is just stupid, cause thats like comparing Apples to Quanum Probability Theory, but in regards to Jonah and his singing and songwriting, I think he is just as good, if not better, than he was in the Far era.

My friend said he wanted to show me a really hideous video by some band on Launch, and that they apparently had some big emo scenester in them. The video started up, and I was just saying that whoever this guy was he could never have been in anything good to make such bad cooker-cutter pop-rock when he said it was "some guy called Jonah Matranga"... I mean, Onelinedrawing, I didn't think that was much cop but I certainly never cringed at the thought of them. But Gratitude's a whole new level of predictable and bad. Not comparable to Far in terms of style, I agree, but in terms of quality... sorry, but he's just sunk to a massive new low for me with this one.

But hey, Tin Cans With Strings To You. Not everyone gets to write a record that good, so it's not like the guy's wasted his life.

Duuuuuuh

Master of Reality is great. Hell, Children of the Grave is probably my favourite Sabbath song with Ozzy on vocals.

Also, Jesus wept, but I don't know what you people see in Cursive. The best Cursive song I ever heard was a 6/10 in the style (Forced Listening thread on another forum. Some dude set them THREE TIMES). Not really a good band imo, but then I don't really like any of that cra...stuff.

Also, I think everyone in the world should own 'Speak English or Die' by Stormtroopers of Death. Even if they totally hate metal. And 'Chemical Invasion' by Tankard. I mean, fucking hell, the title track is a call for the purity of German Beer! What more could you want?

That's a nonsequitur and you know it.  To understand what makes a band innovative or new or whatever, you need to know where they're coming from.  Most music is just a simulacrum or a simulacrum of a simulacrum.  So you should be at least familiar with the early stuff, even if you don't like it.  I'm not saying it's better or worse.  I'm saying that you should be familiar with it if you want to be knowledgeable about music.

And Tchaikovsky was a rock star.  Dude brought cannons for the 1812 overture.  Tell me that's not fucking metal right there.

This is like saying "I like punk but I've never heard of the Clash."  You don't have to like them, but you damned well ought to know them.  This thread isn't "name your favorite album."  It is "name important indie rock must-haves."  Just as The Clash should be on any punk must-have list, VU should be on an indie must-have list.  End of story.

Actually, their keyboard player was the drummer from Coalesce and the two bands once released a split together where they covered each other's songs. Damn good record that, probably the best track the Get Up Kids ever recorded. But yeah, they're more indie emo pop sort of stuff (my, what a snappy genre name I've come up with) than emo hardcore.

Death From Above 1979 - You're a Woman, I'm A Machine
Metric - Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?
any Coheed And Cambria (or Shabutie, the eponymous EP of the band that later changed its name to Coheed and Cambria), for the requisite prog bit (TMV having already been mentione, by sp2 I think)
Hot Hot Heat - Make Up The Breakdown
agreeing with others, I am here... Pink Floyd - Piper at the Gates of Dawn (or A Saucerful of Secrets... or both :))
Iron And Wine - Woman King EP

that should do, when combined with all the other good suggestions

Older stuff that I find somewhat essential:

Lush - Spooky or Split (I'd actually argue that Gala, the compilation of the first two EP's, is still their strongest material, but both of these are a bit more accessible).
The Stone Roses - Self-Titled
Stereolab - Mars Audiac Quintet
Pizzicato Five - Made in U.S.A.
Ride - Nowhere
Cocteau Twins - Heaven or Las Vegas

Daydream Nation certainly represents some of the best of Sonic Youth.  I might argue for Sister over Daydream, but it'd be close.

But hey, Tin Cans With Strings To You. Not everyone gets to write a record that good, so it's not like the guy's wasted his life.

Since I already used an ironic "fighting over the internet" joke, let's move on to the mature "agree to disagree" stage of our relationship (I know, I know, I'm a horrible hipster, I should be calling you names and shit).

However, I definitly agree about Tin Cans. It's a freaking tremendous album. Definitly a highlight of Jonahs career.

Although I'm interested to know why you would choose Before the Dawn Heals Us over Dead Cities, Red Seas and Lost Ghosts for an M83 "must have."  I actually heard Before the Dawn first and was  ready to dismiss them as a more pretentious Vangelis rip off, but someone suggested I listen to the previous album.

I don't know, I guess Before The Dawn Heals Us just feels like more of a cohesive album for me. Don't get me wrong, Dead Cities, Red Seas and Lost Ghosts absolutely blew me away, and I would reccomend it highly, but I don't enjoy the whole album through the way I do with Befor the Dawn. I could listen to "Run Into Flowers" until my heart stops, but the album just isn't as coherent or consistent.

I don't think you can go wrong with either album though.

Unbelievably, I own all of those albums except for British Steel (which I probably WILL download now, all things considered).  And I also agree about Reign In Blood being on the top of the list.

Speak English Or Die is also essential as far as hardcore/thrash albums go.  Has anyone heard D.R.I.'s Dealing With It?  I'm about to download it and am curious to hear some thoughts on the matter...

Well of course, that's just a bare list for the uninitiated. A more complete list would have added:

Stormtroopers of Death - Speak English or Die
Running Wild - Under Jolly Roger
Carpahtian Forest - Morbid Fascination of Death
My Dying Bride - Turn Loose the Swans
Ulver - Nattens Madrigal: Aatte Hymne Til Ulven I Manden
Sabbat - History of a Time to Come
Paradise Lost - Gothic
Count Nosferatu Kommando - Ultraviolence Uber Alles
Celtic Frost - To Mega Therion
Orange Goblin - Frequencies From Planet Ten
3 Inches of Blood - Advance & Vanquish
Ancient Rites - Dim Carcosa
Finntroll - Midnattens Widunder
Children of Bodom - Hatebreeder
Blut Aus Nord - The Work Which Transforms God
Ewigkeit - Radio Ixtlan
Skyclad - The Wayward Sons of Mother Earth
Bloodbath - Breeding Death EP
Aborym - With No Human Intervention
Death - Human
Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse
Hammerfall - Glory to the Brave
Theatre of Tragedy - Velvet Darkness They Fear
Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus
Burzum - Burzum
Dark Tranquillity - The Gallery
Samael - Worship Him
Immortal - Battles in the North
Cradle of Filth - Vempire EP
Electric Wizard - Dopethrone
Therion - Theli
Tankard - Chemical Invasion

and a ton more. But seriously, that ^ audial feast of awesomeness, and a good set of bookmarks, sea-changes, comparisons, oft-copied efforts and simply fucking good music, although it lacks depth in death metal and thrash particularly, and has some more personal choices.

I'll avoid getting into the requisite debate over which Pixies or Pavement album is really the definitive one.  But allow me to throw in a couple that have not been mentioned.

R.E.M. -- Murmur.  I may be biased here suggesting this one, but it is a fantastic album.  This album, along with Automatic for the People, are considered their two best albums.  Murmur pretty much ushered in the "college rock" movement of the 80s.  They were a very unconventional band at the time.  Peter Buck wasn't a true lead guitarist and you've got Michael Stipes oh-so-unintelligible lyrics.  It's a very good album.

I also didn't see any Elvis Costello in there.  My Aim is True or This Year's Model are both great albums.  Most of his albums have been re-released and are packed-full of auditory extras.

My friend's sister is a big REM fan. Knowing this, I set off on a task to bug the hell out of her. It took one sentence.

"REM? Those guys are Hippies."

Well, technically two, but who's counting?

But yeah, that combined with after me saying I hated Weezer makes her think I have no taste in music.

Also, I really have no actual opinion on REM. Never listened to them. I just like bugging my friend's sister.

Anything by the Fall, but especially "Hex Enduction Hour"

Also, The first six Elvis Costello CDs (My Aim is True, This Year's Model, Armed Forces, Get Happy, Trust, Imperial Bedroom)

And I might have missed it, but I didn't see any Bjork either. Get anything by her, it all rules.

Mmm...to give my PERSONAL opinion (as in, what I personally think and not meant in any way to be taken as gospel because there seems to be a disconnect in this thread with expressing opinion and giving a command), I'd say that Life's Too Good by the Sugarcubes is definately worth a listen, as are Post and Vespertine as well as the remix albums.   Debut isn't bad, but many of the songs still had a "Sugarcubes" ring to them, as if she hadn't quite found her style yet.  Homogenic, which I think is stylistically some of her finest work (due largely in part to Mark Bell), suffers from lyrical ineptitude (a lot of the songs sound like something a wounded teenager would write in a bad poetry journal kept under his/her pillow), and while none of her songs are lyrically brilliant, I think I was expecting more from this album because it was such a leap from her previous work..  Medulla was an interesting experiment, but pushes the boundaries for eccentricities a bit too much.

At least, that's what I think.

belle and sebastian - boy with the arab strap/dear catastrophe waitress (delightful brit-pop)
olivia tremor control - dusk at the cubist castle (like beatles if they wore vintage t-shirts and had synthesizers.)
pavement - slanted and enchanted (my favorite pavement album.  should be yours too.)
the silver jews - american water (great album, was so good it broke up pavement.  silly stephen malkmus)
the moutain goats - all hail west texas/tallahasee (great great great albums.  lofi-indie-folk for the soul.)
mirah - c'mon miracle (you will get a crush on her, despite her being "mostly gay")
mogwai - come on die young (also amazing post rock.)
xiu xiu - fabulous muscles  (music to creep out your roommate to.)
sufjan stevens - illinois (if only for john wayne gacy.  so creepy!)
sebadoh - harmacy (good times.)
ryan adams - heartbreaker ("he's got a mouf full o' cookies."  it will make you feel better about the debacle that is rock n roll)
neutral milk hotel - in an aeroplane over the sea  (musical sex.  hands down best nmh album)
i could go on and on, but i shan't.  i left out lots of contemporary things, just because you can go on pitchfork and read up.  although tinymixtapes is far superior!

I guess that depends on your flavor of post-rock. Don't get me wrong, I definitely dig the album, but it's a beast to listen to. I usually play it ambiently.

I prefer Do Make Say Think or Explosions In The Sky. I guess because both bands seem to have more dynamics in a short period of time (6 minutes or so), whereas GY!BE stretches each piece way out.

Have you heard A Silver Mt. Zion? I think you'd probably like them.

i have indeed!  gybe is a bit of a challenge sometimes, i used to feel like i wasn't quite getting it, as trite as that sounds, but one day i was listening to lift yr skinny fists and it just sort of made sense, hence my appreciation.  incedentally, one of my favorite moments ever involving godspeed involved reading harry potter, and it timed perfectly with the climax of the action and song.  disconcerting, really.
p.s.- yo la tengo's prisoners of love is a great intro to indie, it ranges all over the place.  i am a fan.

I've always found tracks like 'H8red' by Killing Miranda and 'My Girlfriends Girlfriend' by Type O Negative infinitely more fun than pop music. Goth is actually a tremendously fun genre.

Speaking of goth, everyone should own:

Sisters of Mercy - Floodland
Siouxsie and the Banshees - Juju
Bauhaus - Burning From The Inside/Bela Lugosi's Dead (or just Crackle)

Minimum.

Also:

Dead Can Dance - umm.....ummm....actually, get all of Dead Can Dance's albums.

Yeah, if you say 'post-rock' most people will think GY!BE first. So, in that regard, i guess they would be THE post-rock to check out. They just don't excite me in the same way Explosions, Mogwai and 65DOS do.
If you haven't herad 65daysofstatic, you're basically missing out. They are totally, like, my favourite band evah. Epic post-rock with a glitchy electronica twist. I'll PM you a tune or two.
