Who are they, and why is the "scene" all abuzz about them?
-
They're two chicks with bad haircuts. I think that answers both your questions.
-
Tegan and Sara are twin sisters from Calgary. There is "scene buzz" because, quite frankly, these girls are simply awesome. They've been around for quite some time, but have only recently been getting a ton of press because of "So Jealous."
-
They are pretty damn awesome.
-
Walking with a Ghost is probably the catchiest thing since Jesus.
Plus they are darn fine....
-
...for two chicks with bad haircuts.
Their music is decent and yes, catchy, I just need to give them a real chance or something. They're not really my style though.
-
Besides the awesomeness that is Walking with a Ghost, I have only heard If It Was You, which is a okay album but not really that great. I don't think they can top Walking with a Ghost to be honest...sadly enough...
-
They so do not have bad haircuts .... they have the sort of cutting edge style which costs ridiculous amounts to get done *sigh* (not that im trying to defend my own very similar haircut or anything :-P) and their music is good but not good enough to warrant a trip to brisbane to catch one of their shows with Little Birdy
-
It's okay, plenty of rockers have bad haircuts. I think that's pretty much a requirement. In order to rock, your hair can't.
-
but but but their hair is not bad ..... the irony is those sort of haircuts take ages of precision at the hands of a very specialised (and often exspensive stylist) I mean the layers and the razoring and the perfect unsymetrical lines ..... and I have really got to stop hanging out with my hairdresser apprentice best friend
-
So it takes a long time and careful precision to make it suck? Man, sounds like Rush.
-
Despite how much I love Rush (Man, first phish and now Rush. What's the deal, crazy indie kids?), that was totally awesome.
-
Part of being indie is shitting on any band with popularity, no matter how time-tested and approved their music may be. Didn't you get the memo?
-
The other part of being indie is shitting on any band which is really obscure because if you haven't heard it it's obviously for tin-eared dolts with stupid haircuts. Also the people who love it should learn to lighten up and embrace some more mainstream stuff, geez.
Anyway, I like Tegan and Sara. If It Was You was a pretty sturdy album.
-
I gave it a listen, and that Walking With A Ghost song is DAMN catchy...
but I'm sure that nothing else on the album compares, right?
-
As awesome as If It Was You is, This Buisness of Art was also quite the album in itself. Especially considering Hawksley Workman played all the instruments for them, and produced it (and I simply love Hawksley Workman).
-
I have heard a lot of buzz about them from others, but I guess I'm just not in the mood lately to check out new music.
Hell, I'll probably get around to it in a few months then be crucified for being 'behind the trend' for starting to like them later.
If I happen to hear something from them I like, I'll get into it. I'm not going to go out and buy an album because its "two cute girls that do music". It didn't work for TaTu and this gimmick isn't going to work for them, either.

Hawksley Workman
I thought I was the only one!
-
I've heard of then before, but never really thought much about them until "So Jealous"... is it bad to like them now that their music suddenly got better and people actually like them?
I heard someone mention that a mullet was a "Canadian Passport" once.
I guess they think so too, eh.
-
They do have fairly bad hair cuts.................
-
I thought I was the only one!
that you are not, Last Night We Were(The Delicious Wolves) is a rock solid album, he reminds me of Rufus Wainwright except he's more fun :)
-
man
i bought "so jealous" while heather was down here, and it's so goddamn good. their voices remind me a little of the good Sinead O'Connor songs i've heard. their voices just have the same tone and quality.
i saw one of their filmclips (speak slow) once one time and basically bought the album on the strength of that one song, and i totally don't regret it. since then i have listened to the album umpteen squillion times. i love just about all the songs on the album, but especially "you wouldn't like me", "i know i know i know", "so jealous" (awesome start) and "speak slow" (80's-tastic & awesome bridge).
also: i cannot listen to "where does the good go" without crying. yay for being emo!

I've been a huge fan of Tegan and Sara's for about two years, back when "If It Was You" came out and they were on Zed Tv. I was so afraid of forgetting their names I wrote it on my floor (cement) in nailpolish because I couldn't find a pen at two in the morning.
As much as I like "So Jealous" I think it's a little too mainstream/pop pleaser for me... Business of Art was much better as was IIWY. Their best songs are Frozen, More for Me, and probably My Number and Come on Kids... Seriously- awesome. And yes, their hair is bad, even by Canadian standards. My sister did better when she was six with safety scissors.
-
Guess we're going to need a Hawksley Thread, boys.
-
filmclips
Completely off-topic: I'm so glad I'm not the only person left in the world who uses this word instead of "video"!
-
They're coming down to Nashvegas on July 21st.

I saw Sage Francis last night, and he was supported by Grand Buffet. They were pretty awesome, and one of them was wearing a Tegan and Sarah Tshirt. So I guess they must be cool. Anecdotal evidence doesn't lie!
