Here's mine: Marcy Playground
well, at least their self-titled. sheer genius, especially "the Shadow of Seattle"
their last two albums have sort of hit the skids, but that first one is worth it, and you'd never know from "Sex and Candy"
so feel free to add your two cents

Bands I wouldn't expect to not . . . I'm confused. Are the bands supposed to be bad or good?
-
sorry...bands that really are good that either you had very low expectations of or conventional wisdom would say should suck
-
Vendetta Red. Their new single torches.
-
Dexy's Midnight Runners. Only because they're such an '80s band and everyone these days is all "'80s music sucks!" without bothering to actually think about it. But Dexy's are/were a bunch of arse-kickers. Just listen.
EDIT: Also, and I apologise in advance if this launches a wild and off-topic debate, but Nirvana. I've noticed a lot of hate about 'em in this forum, but as anybody who grew up through the early to mid '90s will tell you they were a brilliant band who pretty much single-handedly changed the face of modern mainstream rock.
-
The Deftones. Sometimes. Specifically, on the album White Pony.
Also, does Harvey Danger count?
And sometimes I hear things and expect a band to suck. Like for example all the things I'd heard about Neutral Milk Hotel led me to believe that they were overrated. But then I finally got In the Aeroplane, Over the Sea and realized I'd misinterpreted everyone and it actually was as awesome as they said.
-
Hell yeah Harvey Danger!
everyone thinks they were some cheap one-hit wonder...
-
The Monkees never get enough love.
-
I noticed one day last week that Marcy Playground's third album is cleverly titled "MP3." I'm not sure what to make of that.
Harvey Danger is awesome, and so are the Foo Fighters. I'm not sure why I think of them together.
I like Nirvana enough, though I havent actively listened to them in years. But I do agree that they pretty much rewrote the rules about what sorts of things could be big on the radio. Really, I don't know if mainstream music will ever get as radical of an overhaul as after "Smells like teen spirit"
-
"'80s music rocks!"
Correct'd
-
Shatner. Let's face it, his last record was pretty awesome. Not great, but certainly not crap. It spent a couple weeks in my playlist.
(Conversely, you could also say that shtaners last record was just a shitty ben folds album...)
-
Shatner.
Just because he is Shatner.
Is automatically cooler than anything.
-
*cough* Bryan Adams *cough*
OK, so his recorded stuff is pretty weak, but live... He's surprisingly awesome.
-
A Flock of Seagulls.
I walked along the avenue... I never thought I'd meet a girl like you-oo-oo, meet a girl like you-oo-oo.
Skillz.
-
The Monkees never get enough love.
Arguably they got enough love in 1967.
-
Fuck Bryan.
"Ryan Adams"
Well, actualy I never expected him to suck. Still he is better than Bryan Adams.
Hot Hot Heat, do to their popularity and bandages I always expected them to suck. They really don't though.
Elton John...Tiny Dancer. I am sorry I just don't care for most anything by Johnny boy. However, Tiny Dancer was effing amazing.

I think you can expand it to that whole album. Madman Across the Water is far better than I would have expected.

I get so sick of hearing about Nirvana, I live near Seattle though.. so I mean, it figures, but sometimes it just feels like people can't move on and listen to anything other than them.
I am in no way implying they aren't awesome, but sometimes it just feels like people think they are the only awesome band ever.
Sorry for the rant. On topic: I can agree with Harvey Danger and Marcy Playground. Also: Im a fan of Incubus, and while I never expected them to suck, I always thought their earlier stuff would be somehow worse then their latest stuff. I was wrong, Science blew any other album they ever did right out of the water.
-
I still like Nirvana, Melvins, and Mudhoney.
-
Man, you should just go shoot ypourself in the fucking face right now you sad cunt.
-
khar, no hating
this is a thread full of love
love for bands some may consider shit, but compared to inappropriate love for small children, nothing to shoot anyone in the face for
-
WHAt Csmallyt children are cute!!
Oh wait you mean like THAT?
fuick

Best drunken post ever.

I'm now tempted to dive into my C.D. collection and listen to Too-Rye-Ay, In Utero and Doolittle back-to-back.

yeah that first marcy playground cd is amazing, ancient walls of flowers is the kind of song that can stick in your head for a year or more and shadow of seattle is kickass too, and i was sincerely shocked that i still liked it after so long
i definitely could not get out my bush or korn or anything else i listened to in middle school and still say damn this is good
i feel like maybe its because marcy playground was kinda pavement influenced, i might be totally off the mark on that but its just something i thought of just now...will have to do some comparison listens and test this theory
on the other hand i still don't like incubus even though all my friends that listen to mostly indie/punk stuff are like, yeah they're awesome
so i guess its just not my thing
-
Tantric
only went to their show because they were in town, it was my bf's birthday, and he'd never been to a concert, so I decided to take him out
they're not spectacular or anything, but they put on a really good show and the record's not bad
-
The Fall of Troy. For a bunch of teenagers, they're a delight.
-
Third Eye Blind's first album was pretty decent. Incubus is good but overrated. And for some reason I keep liking Alien Ant Farm. They're weird.
-
I didn't think I'd be into Alexisonfire, I thought they were some stupid screamo band, but I actually really like them. Their lyrics are amazing.
-
I'd have to put in my vote for Mindless Self Indulgence.
You'd think by looking at them, that they'd be this horrible "I'm so angsty" band. After a few listens however, you realise that they have some pretty kick ass skills.
And music with an Atari for accompaniment is always kickass.

I live in Seattle, and I heven't heard a thing about since I moved up here a year ago. It's nice.

I was quite surprised upon hearing Limblifter for the first time. I had pretty low expectations when I saw them open for Matt Good, considering I'd heard they were just a "basic rock band", and their name seemed kind of generic too. However, it ended up being very enjoyable, and although they're nothing too amazing, they've got some very well-written songs.

I saw them live here in Ottawa a few years back. Totally blew me away.

I second Dexy's Midnight Runners. I have Too-Rye-Ay on vinyl somewhere.
There are a lot of bands that I think suck in general, but I would absolutely go see live if I had the chance (and was also paying to see a good band along with). I'm going to catch flak for this, and probably rightly so, but Fuel, Incubus, and Linken Park put on some pretty decent live shows, even though I can't stand them otherwise. I saw them back in 2001 at HFStival.
I remember when Marcy Playground first showed up, circa 1996. I throughly enjoyed them back then. I also remember when Live showed up with Mental Jewelry and Throwing Copper. They were pretty good back then, and though they went downhill after that (though I liked that one song with Tricky) they also rock live.

avril lavigne...
i'll go get my coat.
-
It's okay. We can start a support group. I own an Avril album, an EP, and a single...
-
awww, man. how many people do you think would join?
-
Definitely Kelly Clarkson. I saw the label "American Idol" and immediately sought to ignore her. But damn, some of her songs are SO GOOD!

I call this the "Ted Leo Exception" rule. Anything that Ted Leo likes and covers is okay. This category includes Clarkson and Rush. (Of course, you can have a pretty hefty debate about whether Rush is good outside of the Ted Leo Exception. But I'm not really prepared to have that debate.)
-
ashley simpson!
actually, i liked her first song from the get-go, so i didn't have time to expect her to suck. but still, her albums great fun, except for that shitty song about filthy sex.
-
awww, man. how many people do you think would join?
Depends on how many people are willing to be open about it. Probably a lot.
-
i'm sure most people, even if they don't like her music, really really want to have sex with her. i expect high numbers too.
-
I'd hit that.
-
hell yeah.
-
yeah, i really really want to have angsty sex with her
-
yeah, i really really want to have angsty sex with her
DID YOU THINK THAT I WAS GONNA GIVE IT UP TO YOU???
(We are still talking about Ms. Lavigne, correct?)
-
yay for dirty, depressing teen sex.
-
why? I have you seen her teeth? they're pointy.
Id probably do her though, and Im a chick, but it would mostly just be so I could spread rumors that she's a lesbian.
-
she could bite. jesus christ, bitey sex with canadian songwriters. anyway, avril being bisexual or out-and-out lesbian would only further her career anyway. it'd be like those losers tatu again.
-
Hells yeah to the biting! Woot for teh teeny sex!
......that sounds wrong, somehow......................
-
okay, back on track
no more angsty teen sex, before this gets locked
Kelly Clarkson third'd or fourth'd
