Walking Concert- NY Hardcore godfather Walter Schreifels has been listening to a lot of The Kinks, The Smiths, and Elvis Costello. But still fast.
Biirdie- Absurdly cute and melancholy. Like throwing Bright Eyes, Mates Of State, and the Flaming Lips in a blender with a barbershop quartet.
Pilot Scott Tracy- Former cult members The Causey Way, still making fuzzed out surf/synth rock with dual vocals. More poppy this time.
Paint It Black- This is what emo used to be. Hardcore that blurs the lines between the personal and the political. Short songs, gruff vocals, former members of Kid Dynamite.
I Object- They stink. As in, needs a shower. Dirty dirty punk rock. Female vocals, radical politics, heartfelt and light hearted.
The World/Inferno Friendship Society- Fuck. I can barely describe them. Songs that tell beautiful/sad/bizarre/drunken stories, opera quality vocals, swinging horn section, mandolin, accordion, and more literary references than you can shake a stick at, yet somehow, still feels like punk rock. I have still not described them very well. Shares members with The Hold Steady.

nothing is ever going to top rival schools, dude. walking concert are playing here pretty soon though, so i'm definitely checking them out. it'll just be sad that i'll spend the whole set waiting for them to play undercovers on.

You know, what's funny is that Jade Tree seem to have some weird knack for finding really good hardcore bands for a label that isn't particularly associated with hardcore. Paint It Black, From Ashes Rise, Strike Anywhere, Damnation AD, Kid Dynamite and so on. But yes, particularly Paint It Black kick ass.

Am I to assume that Walking Concert has members of Rival Schools? WC came thru dekalb recently and I was unaware of this fact. They played a good set, I would also recommend them.

The Arctic Monkeys - Real British music. Perfect rock - witty, gritty and ludicrously Britty.
The Boy Least Likely To - ZOMGYAY! These guys are just awesome. Indie pop though, for those of you who go "eww" and run like a beetle at either of those words (and seriously why are you on QC if you do?).
That is all that springs to mind currently. I mean obviously The Arcade Fire. But obviously.

Thunderbirds Are Now! - Kinda like Les Savy Fav, but with ADD. Also: the lead singer tends to sound like a girl. Makes indie kids shake dat ass.
Song to hear: "Better Safe Than Safari"
The Russian Futurists - Fuzzy, dreamy indie-pop with phat beats. Wha? Trust me on this one, it's pretty.
Song to hear: "Precious Metals"
Kanda - Think Architecture In Helsinki (Twee Pop) done electronically. Male and female singers trade duties over sugar-overloaded synths and clickin' drum beats.
Song to hear: "They'll Need Cocaine"
Final Fantasy - This guy did the strings for the Arcade Fire's Funeral... obviously he knows his way around a violin, which is the main instrument on the album. It's really pretty music, but it can be a bit melodramatic at times, what with all the violins and whatnot. I'd still reccomend checking it out anyway.
Song to hear: "This Is The Dream Of Win and Reg"
(which, by the by, is a quasi-cover of DNTEL's "(This Is) The Dream Of Evan And Chan" written about Win and Regina Butler, singers of the Arcade Fire)
Edan - I don't know how many of you here are fans of the... "Hip Hop", but I happen to like me some underground flowin'. Edan's flow is flawless, but the real star is the samples. The beats are thrown under a cornucopia of guitar licks, vocal samples, and drum sections from the 60's/70's.
Song(s) to hear: "Funky Voltron (ft. Insight)" and "Fumbling Over Words That Rhyme" are both worth checking out. Don't know anything about hip hop? "Fumbling Over Words That Rhyme" is the complete idiot's guide for your ivory booty, tracing the history of hip-hop as it's evolved over the decades.
Can't really think of much else right now... But that's a pretty decent list of some recent good stuff.

There's loads of things I listen to, but these are the genre-transcending awesomecore bands most people are seriously missing out on.
Skyclad - Seriously the best band in the world ever. No contest. Gone downhill a tad under their new singer, but still good. Get the old singers stuff (everything between 'Wayward Sons of Mother Earth' and 'Folkemon') though. What should you expect? The attitude of Oi!, the rockingness of classic British metal (they progress backwards through their career from Sabbat, to Iron Maiden, to Thin Lizzy, roughly), the pizzazz of British folk music, the lyrical skills of a good modernist poet, and paganism, radical environmentalism, anti-capitalism, puns and whimsy to taste.
Songs: so hard to choose... I'd say 'Penny Dreadful', 'Vintage Whine', 'Polkageist!', 'Our Dying Island', 'Womb of the Worm' for a good cross-section. Their discography is HUGE though.
Ewigkeit - Lock a slightly unhinged conspiracy theorist in a basement full of recording equipment and hallucinogenic drugs. The result is Ewigkeit. It's like throwing Pink Floyd, Dark Tranquillity, Coil and a David Icke book into a big blender. Goodness knows what genre to place it in. Earache Records neatly file it away under 'post-metal', a genre which covers a multitude of sins.
Songs: 'Tired Face', 'Strange Volk', 'Journey to Ixtlan'.
Inkubus Sukkubus - Best goth band of the 90's, no question. Probably the best pagan band with any sort of mainstream appeal. Wonderful vocals, dancy machine drums, processed eighties guitar, atmospheric keys, odd flourishes of folk and classical experimentation. This is a band that still uses tubes to get that classic darkwave sound. One of the bands that, imo, most embodies what goth should really be about: playing up to cliches, writing some angsty poetry, then going out and doing the light-bulb screwy dance all night, with optional goddess worship on the side for your teenage female.
Songs: 'Beltaine', 'Midnight Queen', 'Woman to Hare'
Ayreon - Prog lives, and it's name is Arjen Lucassen. Great music with an intricate storytelling approach with up to about 15 distinct characters singing on each album. 'The Human Equation' is probably the best introduction to his work, but it's really best to begin at the beginning.
Songs: 'Day Sixteen: Loser', 'Carried By The Wind', 'Out of the White Hole'.
Star One - Arjen's also keeping space rock alive! Busy guy. There's only really one proper Star One album, but it's fucking amazing.
Songs: 'Intergalactic Space Crusaders', 'Lift Off/Set Your Controls', 'Hawkwind Medley'.
Nightingale - More great prog. Dan Swano brings broad touches of metal and goth rock to what started out as one of his endless solo projects. They recently ended a quadology of concept albums, their last release just being randomly themed songs. Again, you really need an album. 'I' and 'Alive Again' are great. 'The Breathing Shadow' too, but that's almost pure goth rock.
Songs: 'Forever and Ever', 'Losing Myself', 'Falling', 'Recollections'

World/Inferno Friendship Society, short version is a couple of the dudes used to be in Sticks and Stones, a seminal Jersey group. (They used to play with [and influenced] the Bouncing Souls and Lifetime, back in the day.)
On Paint it Black...Yemin used to be in Lifetime, who wrote the blueprint on modern emo.
Walking Concert-Its one of the guys from the Gorilla Biscuits.

Walking Concert is basically Walter Schreifels (SP? Guitar/songwriting in Gorilla Biscuits/Youth Of Today, vocals/guitar/songwriting in Rival Schools/Quicksand ect...) playing really fun and catchy 2-3 minute pop songs. Their record is really fantastic and I highly reccomend it.
ditto to World/Inferno and PIB. I'll check out the other ones listed sometime.
anyways, something I'm listening to a lot of nowadays is Fifth Hour Hero. Melodic mid-tempo punk rock with some damn fine female vocals. Think if Strike Anywhere was slower and focused more on intricate melody. Hot Water Music and Discount also come to mind.

Those guys did a song with Leftover Crack on LOC's latest LP. "Soon We'll Be Dead," awesome song.

Both those bands deserve to be listened to. Skyclad is excellent and the new Ayreon entitled "The Human Equation" is brilliant.

Lyrics Born- I don't care if you don't like hip hop, you WILL like this. No gangsta shit, clever word play, jazz inflected vocals, funk-rock beats. Seriously, one of the very few artists I have a hard time seeing anyone dislike.

Mock Orange : Inventive Indie rock which sounds like a mix between Pavement, Built to Spill, and Led Zepplin. They started out as an emo band, but even then they were good.
Bear Vs. Shark : Mixes Indie Rock, Post-hardcore, and punk into a terrifying concoction of awesome. If Right Now, You're in the Best of Hands was the sound of a Bear and Shark fighting, Terrorhawk must be the sound of the two having hot, passionate sex.
Retisonic : For some nice, riff-laden rock, check out this DC band. The lead singer/guitarist hails from Bluetip, if that's any incentive.

well... their first releases were stuff like railhed, pitchblende and turning point... so i guess, they were a hardcore label back then. and they always put out stuff like lifetime or yes, the afformentioned kid dynamite.

I was going to list them, since they ARE my favorite band, but I didn't think they were current, since they've broken up. I hate Spin for not including Emergency & I into their "100 Greatest Albums of 1985 - NOW" list. Stupid fuckers up The Strokes. THE STROKES. Fail.

The Boy Least Likely To - I've been addicted to this band for quite some time now... and everybody should be. I don't think I've heard songs about being afraid sound so happy.

danish music in general, but more specifically:
Under Byen - female distinctive danish vocals(childlike and ancient at the same time), but that doesn't really matter because their blend of folk, classical and avantgarde is memerezing and beautiful. Det er Mig Der Holder Træene Sammen has been released in a couple European countries, while their first, Kyst, is almost impossible to get by without a gun in your hand.
Jomi Massage - avantgardish noise-rock, again a distinctive female singer in Signe Høirup Wille-Jørgensens feministic delivery both in lyrics and presence. Her debut Aloud is actually both quiet and loud, should appeal to Sonic Youth fans, if more accessible you could say.
Lise Westzynthius - Her second album Rock, You can Fly is a gorgeous pop album wrapped in warming noise, ala Joy Zipper. She is a chanteuse you say, and Rock, You Can Fly is one fine piece of plastic.

I find them far too samey and arch myself. There just isn't the sense of fun I want from bands like that.
Anyway, currently rocking my socks:
Like A Kind of Matador - droney, arty heavyness with a flute. Features people also responsible for McWatt, Red Right Hand and Trees. Album coming soon, should be very good.
La Quiete - yes, overhyped screamo, but for once this band deserve it. Le Fine Non E La Fine is superb, but the insane live show's where they really excel.
Snowblood - um, post-rock sludge perhaps? Buggers to define or describe, but if the new album has material even half as good as Cape Wrath or that mammoth riff from Kali then I'll be very happy indeed.
Guapo - Black Oni is masterful and Five Suns with destroy the mind in a very very good way. And they have a gong. More bands need gongs. I wish they wouldn't burn all that incense live though.
I'll leave it at that for now I think. I second that Engine Down recommendation though, and Retisonic too. Although if anyone's planning to check them out avoid their debut mini-album, it doesn't do their live sound justice and you'll get a bad impression of what they're capable of. Pretty packaging though.

The Holy Shroud - Ex-North of America and ex-Contrived guys discover indie. Unlike their previous stuff, this stuff is pretty straight and melodic even if the songs are rather rhythm-driven, but hey, that makes you want to dance, so it's all good in the end.
Into The Moat - Technical Metalcore from Florida. Driving, complex and aggressive music with nice jazz interludes. They also have MP3s, I recommend A Settling Of Ways (http://server4.hxcmp3.com/bands/5037/index.php).

Hmm, sounds interesting. I saw Like a Kind of matador support Boris at Brudenell and they were quite impressive, although I think their music is better digested over repeated listens than being thrown into it live. I'll definitely check out Guapo and La Quiete though. Are they both from Leeds, or play there regularly?

The Residents - What a suprise, eh? While not exactly "current" (They've been around since the early 60's) they're still making records. And they wear eyeball masks and play more instruments than you can imagine. They don't play all of them really well, but if they did, then the music wouldn't be as awesome. Imagine Captain Beefheart on painkillers or Zappa on acid. Yeah.
Speaking of Beefheart and Zappa, listen to them.
The Disco Biscuits - I'm going to describe them in a way that makes many people angry or scared. They are a jam band. but no ordinairy jam band. The Best jam band in the world. Go download a show, they're free and awesome. ( http://bt.etree.org has some)

I don't know how many rap fans there are on these forums, but those who are reading this absolutely need to find a rapper named Louis Logic. He's frighteningly good.
You know all those people who never listen to rap but "respect Eminem for his lyrical talent?" They've never heard of Louis Logic (but then, since he's not very well known, "respecting him for his lyrical talent" doesn't get you any cred, so nobody would mention him anyway). This guy makes Eminem look like a hack, though. it's uncanny.

Tenacious D also made some of the greatest videos in the history of Rock and Roll. There are a good few bootlegs floating around containing songs by them that didn't make it onto the album, though be careful, as at least half of them are mis-labelled songs by Wierd Al or Green Jelly or someone equally improbable, p2p being what it is.
Now, to list some more bands nobody will listen to:
Orange Goblin Unsung heroes of Stoner Rock, their earlier albums are filled to the brim with seventies tinged, weed-smelling tracks about taking drugs and reading Lord of the Rings, neatly wrapping up the melodic end of the UK stoner scene dominated by doom metal and pure sludge bands like Iron Monkey and Electric Wizard. Recently they went through a big line-up shake-up and changed into a more Misfits-inspired punk outfit. Good shit whatever.
Recommended tracks: 'Magic Carpet', 'Saruman's Wish', 'White Night Cyanide', 'Crown of Locusts', 'You'll Never Get to the Moon in That'.
Bal-Sagoth It may just be that Bal-Sagoth embody everything you most loathe about metal: They are insanely pretentious (track names are sentence length and sprinkled with Conan The Cimmerian/Lovecraft style names, the singers stage-name is Lord Byron) insanely cheesy (They perform dressed as fantasy characters, waving swords and wearing chainmail, they sing about witch-queens and barbarians and space knights and Hyperboreans) and liberally sprinkle their music with both black metal influences and vastly cheesy keyboard.
But fuck, do they KICK ASS. All fantasy nerds, this is your music. Each album is a well-written stock fantasy novel told in song. Brilliant!
Recommended tracks: You do need to sit down with the lyrics sheet and absorb an album, but for individual tasters try 'The Dreamer in the Catacombs of Ur', 'To Dethrone The Witch-Queen Of Mytos K'unn (The Legend Of The Battle Of Blackhelm Vale)', 'Behold, The Armies of War Descend Screaming From the Heavens', 'In the Raven-Haunted Forests of Darkenhold, Where Shadows Reign and the Hues of Sunlight Never Dance', and 'Blood Slakes the Sand at the Circus Maximus'. (I wasn't joking).
Anyway, now I'm off to read some Harry Potter.

Ash - For those of you who like (or at any point used to like) the pop-punk genre and have since got extremely tired of it's repetitiveness or lack of intrigue or diverse mood, you will smile at the soaring chords and vocals of Ireland's Tim Wheeler and Charlotte Heatherley, the singers of Ash. If you have already seen the movie "Shaun of the Dead" (and if you haven't, you should), then you have already heard at least two songs by Ash (three if you watch all the credits). Most record stores that I know of still have copies of their 2004 release of "Meltdown", their fifth LP, but I would not reccommend this CD (even if their single "Clones" may just be the best song they've ever written). Instead, do a little more searching for their second LP "1977", as it, in my opinion, is infinitely suprerior to "Meltdown" as it has a much more diverse style and soundscape, from the Star Wars-sampling guitar-gnashing (even if Wheeler sings really softly) opener "Lose Control", to the mid-record, almost theatrical composition "Innocent Smile" (also written by their bassist), to the closer "Darkside Lightside", which is an appropriate title considering it changes almost completely halfway through the song, and ends with a little "bonus track" of the band's "conversation" after a show, though it is not for the faint of stomach. I guarantee you will absolutely adore these guitar-torching (yes, they do that at their shows) Irishmen (and woman), but if you hate most styles of punk rock (especially the jumpier, more popular style), well, these guys are definetely not for you.
(Rob) Overseer - This guy did what I could not imagine possible, he fused two genres that I otherwise dislike (or downright hate) and made them into the most amazing combination imaginable. This England-based techno-geek/rapper somehow managed to combine the moody raps of fellow countrymen Massive Attack and the intrumental rainbows of Moby and made an LP. Everything from club dance music ("Stompbox") to a growling rap ("Never") to a jazz lounge number ("Aquaplane") to a torch song ("Sparks") is available on his record debut "Wreckage". If you have any love at all for the glowing soundscapes of techno, or the awesome music present in the movie "Snatch", you will like "Wreckage".
Plastilina Mosh - I am not exaggerating in the least when I say that these two boys from Monterrey, Mexico, have done almost absoluetely everything. From the three LPs that Alejandro Rosso and Jonaz (last name unknown) has released to the US, you could identify almost any genre available from the songs that they have written. Jazz, disco, techno, indie, hip-hop, lounge, even a few more comedic tracks. It's all there, and (most of) it's in Spanish. Even if you can't understand, the language, you will probably enjoy the sheer number of styles these guys explore on their three albums "Aquamosh", "Juan Manuel", and "Hola Chicuelos". "Aquamosh" features most of their more rock-oriented, relaxed styles of music, "Juan Manuel" explores their perverse and playful infatuation with disco, and "Hola Chicuelos" is their most mocking and out-there album, with more styles and jokes than I can even begin to describe without writing a novel. In my opinion, you will like these guys at least a little. I don't see how it is possible not to.
Curve - Although not exactly "current", they did just break up his year, and they have been around since 1990, so I think they are worth mentioning. The infamous and haunting band fronted by Toni Halliday and Dean Garcia explores the most base feelings of humanity, love, hate, and innocence. With Garcia's ingeniously-tuned and altered guitar and Halliday's creeping and theatrical voice, The team cuts the human heart to pieces and explores it's every nuance in meticulous detail with their own unique style of techno-rock, present since the early nineties. Curve are nothing short of pioneers of an amazing style of amazing and emotional style of rock music, and I think everyone should hear at least some of their music if they will, in fact, cease to exist after this year.

Okay, I feel like I should have better described the Constantines. Alright.
Imagine the Arcade Fire. That level of energy. That general sound. Now, imagine them playing Trail of Dead songs. The good ones. That is the Constantines. Good post-hardcore with good songwriting, great attention to building and releasing energy, and enough experimentation to keep it interesting, but not so much it derails your attention. The recording quality is a little eh, but it works because they're pretty much trying to rock the garage band thing anyways. Also, they are totally awesome live. Go see them if you can. Really.

ROBOTS IN DISGUISE. British girl electro-indie/synthpopish type stuff. fun.
PATRICK WOLF- orchestrally trained young british dandy type who's put out one record that was electro and catchy hooks all the way, and another thats pretty much all classical instruments, lots of strings, ukelele and old-fashioned folky lyrics. just far too incredibly talented, a pure joy to listen to. you really need this.
JAPANESE TELECOM- pretty much another apple not falling too far from the detriot electro scene. simple beat and synth stuff with vocal samples. think adult. ,but a little less tense.
SYBARITE- really good ambient/postrock ish stuff. think album leaf accessible-ness with a little casino versus japan spaciness at times.
SAETIA - amazing old emo/emocore. i think a coupke of the members went on to hot cross when they broke up, and hot cross are really good too.

Hmm, sounds interesting. I saw Like a Kind of matador support Boris at Brudenell and they were quite impressive, although I think their music is better digested over repeated listens than being thrown into it live. I'll definitely check out Guapo and La Quiete though. Are they both from Leeds, or play there regularly?
Hey, I was at that Boris gig! It was fun. Sadly neither La Quiete nor Guapo are local. La Quiete are from somewhere in Italy, they played hear once at a house gig (always the best way to see a hardcore band). Guapo are British but I forget whereabouts they come from, they've done a couple of Leeds gigs in the past year.

Any electronica kids need to get their hands on some randomNumber. He kicks ass. Of all the big electronica acts, he's probably closest to Autechre. Given that I saw him supporting a band in a pub, I assume not many people have heard of him.

For anyone who doesn't instantly flinch when they hear the word (well, it's sort of a word) "metal/hardcore" and thus doesn't earn themselves a smack upside the head, I reiterate how urgent it is that you at the very least give Misery Signals (http://www.purevolume.com/miserysignals) a listen. Quite possibly one of the more original bands to surface in the last few years and are excellent musicians as well as songwriters.

More recommendations no-one will take up.
Burzum The name means 'Darkness'. You will find no more powerful statement of intent and purpose in any band name ever. Burzum is the be all and end all of minimalist music, mixing sparse, hypnotic keyboard compositions with writhing, rhythmic, bleak and wasted black metal to create an over-powering aura of spiritual darkness. To really get Burzum, you have to listen to it on an album by album basis, preferably in the original format (LP or CD) or approximation thereof. Each Burzum album is designed to put it's listener into a psychological mood-state: almost a spiritual experience. Forget what Varg Vikernes did, or what he said. Just fucking listen.
Recommended tracks: If you're GOING to sample tracks, 'Ea, Lord of The Depths', 'Beholding the Daughter of the Firmament' ('Erblicket De Tochter Des Firmaments'), 'The Crying Orc', 'Han Som Reiste' and 'Die Kraft de Mitgefuehls' ('The Power of Empathy'). But as I said, albums are really necessary. For people here, I'd recommend the purely electronic works 'Daudi Baldrs' and 'Hlidskjalf'. But it's all incredible.
And now, LISTEN UP, because here's pretty much the two Indie bands I like:
British Sea Power Powerful, atmospheric experimental rock music miles above most of the other stuff I've heard from the genre. I particularly recommend the album 'The Decline of British Sea Power', and my favourite track by them 'Fear of Drowning'.
Tan-Hauser Gate Small, local and probably quite hard to get hold of, I think there may be another band with the same name as well, but they're wonderful. Only released a self-titled demo. Subdued, keyboard driven hypnotic rock music with a liberal dash of goth and the same oceanic mood that draws me to British Sea Power. 'Not Today' is one of the songs irrepressibly associated with my home Island, in my mind.
