Sounds like my Dad when I was a teenager.

The only answer is: get your own computer.

Really, there's no other way.  Ask if you can use his internet connection, and get yourself your own computer.

They're not that expensive right now.  You can get something that would handle Guild Wars NICELY for around $800.00 (CDN).  You could probably build your own for less too.

The Guild Wars requirements aren't that high. You can probably build or find a PC that can handle it for under a couple hundred dollars. I've seen PCs on craigslist.org that would run it for around $100-150.

True enough.

I've priced out a low-end system (in CDN$) which will still handle Guild Wars well:

Tower - $40.00
Motherboard - $75.00
Hard Drive - $85.00
Memory - $69.00
Sound Card - $35.00
Video Card - $80.00
DVD/CD ROM - $65.00

So under $500.00.  Not bad.

Option 1: Leave home. Your parents obviously don't love you. Leave home and sell yourself as cheap labour on the streets. Waste the money on heroin. Die young. That'll show 'im.

Remember kids: running away from home and doing drugs are NOT COOL. The above was sarcasm.

Option 2: Shut up and put up. It's just a game, man. I'm quite happy without a copy of guild wars (my connection's too slow for online play to really be a feasible right now) So why can't you be? Just spend the money you would have spent on the game on something else - a couple of CD's or DVD's, another game, some cool T-shirts or shoes or something...

Option 3: Buy, build or otherwise acquire a computer. This could be expensive, so try a little dumpster-diving downtown first, just to see if any of the big companies are chucking out PC's and/or laptops that you can scavenge and call your very own.

Here's what you do: Get yourself a job, on weekends or something. Preferably something that will give you some exercice to offset all the time you will be spending immobile in front of your keyboard. Now, you start saving. Set an amount of money that will give you a reasonable system (you've got some ideas above). When you reach that amount, buy the best computer you can get for the money you have. There is no point in waiting for that new piece of hardware to come out, or for prices to drop, and so on. The Patton quote below applies here. And now, enjoy your very own computer.

also: your dad either doesn't know anything about computers or he doesn't trust that you know much about computers.  there's no way that installing a fucking game on your pc will suddenly infect it with virii.

As I see it, you have two options.

1. Tell your fater that there is all but no chance of etting a virus on guild wars. Try to explain the system to him and how you can't imbed viruses in the code of your character. (I don't play guild wars, but that's as much as you can customize, right?)

2. Get your own damn computer

I suggest a petition. Preferably offline as, from what I've read, your dad wouldn't understand anything remotely connected to the internet.

Seriously, just find someone he trusts who knows the slightest thing about the internet and have them explain the situation to him.

However, I have a slight suspicion that he's just acting ignorant so he'll have more time to use his computer - in which case getting your own is probably the only reasonable option.

Alternatively.. do it anyway and dont tell him. If he knows that little about computers, he will never know you did it.

Punch your dad in the face.

*laughs* or alternatively, explain to him that there is NO possible way in which guild wars could infect the computer. Tell him that the porn that he looks up has more chance of infecting the computer.

If that doesn't work...punch him again.

Do what I do. Play something else. There are better games than Guild Wars out there.

I'm getting the feeling that the game "Guild Wars" (which is actually quite good) is not in itself the problem but rather Fabio's father's fear of having "unnecessary" programs installed on his computer.

Free Online Games like Conquer Online are a lot bigger Risk that Guild Wars. I've played Guild Wars since the World Preview Event back in October (Halloween Weekend) and it has NEVER introduced a virus into my system.

Blackmail.

Yes, blackmail, that's your answer. Hop on your pop's PC when he's at work tomorrow and find his porn. Upon aquiring said pornogrphic directory information, write it down. Make sure to make a copy of the folder(s) should he attempt to delete it.

From there on out, you can be creative. Though I would suggest threatening him with the paper with such comments as, "What, isn't mom good enough for you?" when you mother is nearby and can hear his following outburst. OR simply just leave the paper where your mom can find it, and watch the fun that is guaranteed to ensue.

Here's what you do. Explain to him that the larger software companies are responsible enough not to put bugs in their programs. I take it your old man lets you play other things on his PC? If so, then let him know it is just as safe. Tell him to look it up or to let the eighty bazillion or so people who use it tell him the same thing.

If that fails, go Tyler Durden on his ass.

Whoo-Cha!

Have you tried convincing him that computer games cure cancer?

They do, I'm sure of it.

Leave some articles around the house that suggest that video games might mean he doesn't have to pay your college tuition.

If your dad dosn't have porn on his computer you could always plant some there.

OR

Explain with the maximin amount of technical jargon possible that there is minimal risk of getting a virus, make it confussing and say it as fast as possible. As he dosn't apear to know anything about computers you could throw in big technical words that are completely irrelavent. Then watch him crumble beneath your seamingly vastly superior knowledge. It dosn't realy matter if what you are saying makes no sense.

You: "The online code frequency is designed to conflict with RAID altering DD-R virus trojans that might attack your PC's operating system schematics, or accosiated interface LED memory clock central processing unit. Glae-vin!"

Your Dad: "Wha- What! Oh son I surrender to your superior knowledge. You are now the man of the house and can Install Guild Wars, not go to school, and eat candy all day. Oh and have my Car."

You: "Yay!"
