Anyone as exited as I am at the prospect of a new Pixies album, I was a bit meh at Bam Thwok, but it grows and is actually a fun song.
-
Seriously, no. The Pixies were good 10 years ago. Their music is still relevant now. But the band themselves are a bunch of washouts.

I'm INCREDIBLY pleased by this
Either you're gullible or you're going to be seriously disappointed.
I don't really forsee anything good coming of this. The Catholics and The Breeders were neither particularly good, and pretty much rode on the Pixies' coattails (given, Cannonball was an awesome song, but most of the rest of that album was trash, and Pod wasn't much better, and nothing by the Catholics was particularly notable), so really, none of the band has produced anything significant in the last 15 years. If you've seen them on their most recent set of tours, you'd also know that they really don't play too well together anymore, they can hold a tune fine, but their playing is pretty much wooden. Do I think they have another album in them of Surfer Rosa/Doolittle caliber? No, I think they're pretty much spent.
-
The album is not out, and you're lambasting it?
anyways, I'm not going to argue musical taste.
I'm INCREDIBLY pleased by this.

I'm not lambasting it. I could be wrong and it turns out to be the best thing ever. I'm just not getting my hopes up. The prospect of new Pixies material has the potential to be really exciting, but it also has the potential to be really really really disappointing.

As with every other piece of music since the beginning of time. Some will not be your bag, others will rule. If your "Not getting your hopes up", say so. Dont go all "OMFG THIS IS GOING TO SUCK".
-
Let's put it this way:
Expectations for a new Pixies album are too high. No one in the band has really done much for a long time. Although the potential to record something amazing is there, the actual chance of that is small. If you go into this expecting Doolittle 2.0, you're going to be disappointed. If you go into it without high expectations or hopes, you're more likely to not regret the $13 we're all going to spend buying this (well, Khar won't, but the rest of us probably will).

The whatsies?
-
My point exactly.

My point exactly.
Actually, not your point. your point is that they're washed up and played out. His is that he's never heard of them. But nice try being contentious.
-
No, no, you're an idiot. I said that Khar wouldn't be rushing out and spending $13 on the CD. This is because Khar is a fucking metalhead, not a hipster, and he could care less about the Pixies. He responded saying precisely that, and I said "precisely."
It was a joke between Khar and me, and you obviously didn't get it.
-
Depends. I throw insults around like rice at a wedding. Only a fraction of the time am I totally serious about it. However, seldom do they not contain a grain of truth.
-
i saw them on their last tour in 93, went with an older cousin for the show. I pretty much fell in love right there. also saw them last year.
and THATS why i have faith that this release will be good. There a band that pretty much got me into Indie.
-
I'd always assumed they were grunge...they're the ones Kurt Cobain blabbled on about right? Or was that Pavement? Stoopid Mork and Mindy Rock, or whatever it is you bloody kids call it.
-
They're indie pop alternative, and yes, Cobain loved the shit out of them. He loved them so much that he pretty much stole their song structure.
-
What, long, rambling and repetitive?
Grunge > anything with the word pop in it.
-
The Pixies > Nirvana.
Why?
the line:
"YOU ARE THE SON OF A MOTHERFUCKER"
being played around my mom and grandma in the car while listening to them. really loudly.

Anyways...
I saw the pixies live less than a month ago at summerfest along with weezer. I will have to agree with sp2 on this one, they aren't ready for a comeback. I would have to compare their live show with something along the lines of say, the eagles' reunion show. They looked a little too old for rock and roll up there... it was a great set, mind you, but it was more along the lines of "let's clap because these guys used to be awesome back in the day", not "let's clap because I can't wait for the new pixies album".
But here's hoping they prove me wrong, eh?
-
I agree that it probably be on another level than back then, but I am confident they will make a good album, and yes probably not anything like Doolittle. Call it a hunch :)
-
Even though at the moment I'm loving anything even vaguely near indie pop I'm not really anticipating much. The Pixies never grabbed me, even during my last indie pop tangent. I think they just didn't strike me as arty enough, although I haven't heard much from them in a long time. (As in I can't remember much of what they sound like, not that they haven't released anything).

Seeing 'em at Reading in August, I shall reserve judgement 'till then.
