I feel the need to post because most of the people I know who listen to a lot of indie music dismiss rap as Lil' Jon-style crap. I used to feel this way myself, as I'm more of a punk rock guy anyway. But there's actually a lot of good rap and hip-hop out there, a lot of stuff with very political lyrics (i.e. Michael Franti and Spearhead, Dead Prez, and of course Public Enemy). Unfortunately, none of it is played on corporate-dominated radio (on this I agree with you indie kids :) ), and most of the idiot kids who listen to rap don't bother looking beyond the pop stations.
So, anyone else like rap, and if so, what groups?
-
I'm listening to dalek right now and I've never like rap much at all, but who else namedrops Faust (The German experimental band) in his raps?
-
here's a list
Sage Francis
Cannibal Ox
Spearhead
Atmosphere
Eyedea & Abilities
Grand Buffet
Sole
Buck 65
Dilated People
Jungle Brothers
Melly Mel
Grandmaster Flash
Dizzee Rascal (Grime, I know, but close enough)
Aesop Rock
RJD2
J5
Public Enemy
-
MF DOOM
Madvillan
Madlib
A Tribe Called Quest
Souls of Mischief
Del Tha Funky Homosapian
Hieroglyphics
Wu-Tang Clan
Pharcyde
Gorrilaz (In general good, but specifically hip hop tracks)
Fat Lip
Jurassic 5
Chali 2na
Ugly Duckling
Handsome Boy Modeling School
Prince Paul
De La Soul
....I could go on if I wanted
There's lots of good stuff out there, it's just usually much more underground than the popular stuff.
-
Good hip-hop is a beautiful thing, not to mention an artform. Unfortunately it tends to get grouped with chart RnB and that godawful crunk bullshit by the general public, which doesn't help matters any.
Hip-hop I recommend as a good intro: (off the top of my head)
Roots Manuva
Blackalicious
De La Soul
A Tribe Called Quest
The Beatnuts
Talib Kweli
Mos Def
Ugly Duckling
And if you're in Australia or have access to Australian records:
Hilltop Hoods
On Inc.
The Herd
Downsyde
-
The Herd is likejesus in my pants.
-
Is that good or bad?
The first I heard of The Herd was 77% (Tampa Tantrum), and they just keep getting better.
-
Definately Good.
I need some more Aussie export! make a thread listing good Aussie bands so we dont off topic this one.
-
All of the above plus Lyrics Born and nearly anyone else singed with Quannum Projects.
And I'm putting in an epic second for the Hilltop Hoods and Buck 65.
On a side note, I have this theory that anything that comes from Canada that doesn't start with 'Celine Dion' is most likely pretty bloody good (in this case, Buck 65 and Eyedea & Abilities).
-
With the possible exception of the Swollen Members.
I bought one of their albums, loved it for about a week, and haven't been able to stomach a single song ever since.
-
most of the idiot kids who listen to rap don't bother looking beyond the pop stations.
So, anyone else like rap, and if so, what groups?
I feel I should mention this, not to be elitist or anything ('cause I hate musical elitists), but simply because not enough people are really aware of it. Hip-hop and rap are two separate musical styles - both have borrowed from each other and cross-bred over the years, but still.
As easy examples... Rap? Think N.W.A and earlier Snoop Dogg. Hip-hop? Think Jurassic 5 and Mos Def.
Disclaimer: my views may not mirror those of anyone else. And that's cool.
-
All of the above plus Lyrics Born and nearly anyone else signed with Quannum Projects.
HELL YES.
LB is hands down my favorite rapper out there today.
Murs is also really fucking good.
Damn, I think the new Murs/Atmosphere collaboration should be out now...
-
This thread has been done to death already. But, other than that, the only hip hop album I'll ever need is the rawkus records mixtape Soundbombing II. If you've never heard it, go get it.
-
I don't know if mentioning The Streets makes me a tool, but I'm going to anyway, because I dig 'em. Or him. Whatever.
-
The Herd is likejesus in my pants.
there's a new herd album in the works at the moment, 'parrently. but if you're looking for more, some of the members have done solo releases n stuff. urthboy's album 'distant sense of random menace' is pretty good. and unkle ho, one of the herd's producers/laptop jockeys, just put a out an album ("roads to roma"), but it's not strictly hip-hop. good though.
try prefuse 73 and el-p for some glitchier stuff, which i'm into at the moment...
-
As easy examples... Rap? Think N.W.A and earlier Snoop Dogg. Hip-hop? Think Jurassic 5 and Mos Def.
Disclaimer: my views may not mirror those of anyone else. And that's cool.
Uh, No. No, no, no.
But you know, it's your opinion and all, so I'm not going say any more. The only thing certain to be more retarded than 'WHAT SI EMOS?' threads are 'What's the difference between Hip-Hop & Rap' threads. Jesus.
Anyway, this topic resembled a comet for quite some time, as it perodically appeared every 3 months or so. Now it's more like the moon in its frequency. Suprisingly enough, everyone's still listening to the same stuff they were last time (me included). So I'll continue my quest to be a devil's advocate of sorts.
Rhymesayers, Def Jux, Anticon and Quannum Projects are all bullshit. You only listen to it because you're white pussies who want to be Eminem.
Instead, hit up the old shit:
NWA
Mobb Deep
Organized Konfusion / Pharoah Monch solo stuff
Smif n Wessun
Wu-Tang Clan (and solo stuff. At least 'liquid swords' and 'only built 4 cuban linx'). This is your number 1 priority.
Nas
BDP (If only for the legendery BDP vs MC Shan / Marley Marl feud)
KRS ONE
Public Enemy
The Coup
Kool Moe Dee
EPMD
Jungle Brothers
Eric B & Rakim
Then start listening to some serious Dirty South. Get 'Bouncin and Swangin' by the Down South Hustlers, as an intro. Then hit up some 8ball & MJG, Big Tuck, Hollow Tip, Project Pat, Gangster Pat (Especially the album 'Deadly Verses'), K-Rino, and some Devin the Dude for the humour. For the love of God pick up some DJ Screw.
Next, UK Hip-Hop. Lowkey, Jehst, Skinyman, Yungun, Task Force. Get one of the 'the answer' mixtapes. They're on volume 22 or something now, so there's plenty about. Some grime wouldn't go a miss (And yes, there are other grime artists. Not just Dizzee Rascal.)
Then listen to some 50 cent, and stop trying pretend it's not Hip-Hop just because you don't fucking like it.
Right. I'm done.
PS. I'd add TZU to the Australian Hip-Hop list. I like TZU.
My Aim is True: I was all over the Felt 2 advance. It's pretty good, much better than the first Felt. 20 answers is probobly the best track and it's not even on the album.
-
Anyone else fucking excited for this?
-
.Best.Colab.Ever.
-
Nobody's mentioned Common yet. Or Kanye West. Or The Roots.
-
not a single mention of cLOUDDEAD?
i felt like registering just to add them
-
DELTRON (actually anything Del Tha Funkee Homosapien has been a part of)
common
the roots (there, mentioned!)
Twalib Kweli
anything off of Rawkus Records
Jurassic 5
Pharoah Monch
all I could think of off the top of my head
-
Anyone else fucking excited for this?
Have you heard any of the tracks off it yet? TOP FUCKING NOTCH...
My friend has the two(I think) tracks that have been release and they are amazing. hell, DOOM tops my list as good hip hop. Even though I don't care for him too much.
Don't get me wrong, DOOM is excellent, it's just not quite my style. I can appriciate it, but I'd rather hit up some Hiero...
As far as Quantum is concerned, good shit right there. I must disagree about Lyrics Born though, again while being a great MC, he gets rather boring I feel. Off of "Later that Day..." I could only really get into Bad Dreams and Callin' Out. All the other tracks just seemed rather unimpressive.
And finally, there's nothing like two white guys (me and my friend) wandering around both sporting Blackalicious shirts, it's fekkin' hilarious.
-
Nobody's mentioned Common yet. Or Kanye West.
They've got some great stuff out there, yes. My listenees for rap & hip-hop are:
2Pac
50 Cent
Ashanti
Black Eyed Peas
Chingy
Common
D12
Dr. Dre (awesome)
Eminem
Game
G-Unit
Jadakiss
Kanye West
Lloyd Banks
Nas
Nelly
Nivea
Toby Mac
Young Buck
</mainstream>
-
you dont strike me as a Chingy fan.
-
DANGER DOOM FTW!
MF Doom is rpobably my favorite rapper, but LB has a place in my heart as he has a really hot wife who sings with him and his bassist was fucking sick. i don't have time ATM to expound on hiphop, but we've had this thread before and i did it there so.... i guess this was a worthless post....
-
doesn't exist.
-
Anyone else fucking excited for this?
So far all I've heard is Mince Meat, but its awesome. Have you heard Ghetto Pop Life? The only thing I've been listening to for weeks. I also recommend Sage Francis - A Healthy Distrust
-
you dont strike me as a Chingy fan.
If you'd seen Luke, he wouldnt strike you as any kind of rap fan haha.
Im really not much into any kind of rap or hip hop, some stuff is good to dance to, but not my style for the most part. Kanye West is ok for mainstream though i spose.
-
kanye's beats are ok, but i think he sucks, personally
-
Hmm... I see most of the stuff I listen to (that's not from Germany) was mentioned here already, but let me add:
Kool Keith, Dr. Octagon (and basically all other pseudonyms of Kool Keith), Necro.
Also, fun fact: Buck65's (tour) drummer was also in North of America (before they split up).
-
As far as modern hip-hop, I don't think anyone mentioned P.O.S - he's a punk influenced rapper, "A rapper who hates rap" as he describes himself. He's got an album out called "Ipecac Neat" so far, I think he recently signed on with Rhymesayers, as he's from MPLS.
And as far as older, two names come to mind:
Biz Markie, and The Fat Boys.
-
Where the fuck are you people getting the Danger Doom tracks? I gots to hear me dat shit.
-
you dont strike me as a Chingy fan.
I'm not exactly a Chingy fan, he just happens to be on the list of hiphop artists that I like. My fannage, so to say, is more towards Dr. Dre, Eminem, 2Pac, and the artists of G-Unit.
And Maui's right - I don't even strike myself as a hiphop fan; I just go through phases where I listen to it a hellofalot. Right now I'm in less of that phase, but that'll probably change when Detox comes out next year.
-
MilkmanDan to the rescue, baby.
DangerDoom leaked tracks:
Mince Meat
http://s47.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2DBMYDF1922G133L4TXZZR76Z4
Sofa King
http://s47.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1A00XT7VZU1IF0FZLOSGI5K59Q
Somersault (DangerMouse Remix)
http://s47.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1FYAYFJL4406S3FTHYX28MBMXW
Somersault is a remix of a Zero 7 song I believe, and won't be on the album. It's been around for a while, but it's still dangerdoom, so I stuck it on. The other two will be on the album, so get excited.
-
sektion kuchikäschtli
hip hop from switzerland in swiss dialect. awesome²!
-
kanye's beats are ok, but i think he sucks, personally
Why's that?
I like Eazy E. Some 2 Pac and some Biggie. One of my favourite songs out of the 90's though has to be Regulators by Nate Dogg and Waren G. Also I'm into a lot of the other stuff others have mentioned.
-
i think Kanye's rhymes are shite.
granted i haven't heard a lot of his stuff, but for the most part i don't like his lyrics or his voice. very bland and annoying to me
-
i just wanted to say that my hip-hop culture and knowledge is beyond weak, but i really enjoyed what i listened from Edan´s 'The beauty and the beat'. Now i´m listening to these Danger Doom tracks...
-

i don't know if these were typos or mistakes, just tryin to help :)
-
that was from typing too fast actually. thanks.
-
After months of listening to Kanye's beats, I've come to the conclusion that he sucks.
I just got Organix by the Roots today and it is a good deal of funky.
-
I'm really getting into Sage Francis. You guys are the bee's knees.
-
After months of listening to Kanye's beats, I've come to the conclusion that he sucks.
THANK you
-
*cough*BeastieBoys*cough*
Don't care where you come from, they are awesome. And Mos Def is one of the coolest people alive.
-
doesn't exist.
Git! I thought I was going to get to say 'OXYMORON!' first.
-
It seems silly to relate to a whole crew (and that sort of devotion seems like a necessity), but there are always standout artists.
I mostly hate the Def Jux folk, but Cannibal Ox's album is absolutely fantastic. So are El-p's beats for the most part.
I can't stand Sage Fran or Buck65 but their producers (some Anticon blokes and Sixtoo) are awesome. So perhaps check out the instrumentals.
EPMD is amazing always, but also check out Gravediggaz and Das EFX.
Old Busta Rhymes still rules hard.
The Soul Junk crew do some very awesome things with hip hop sensibilities. Kind of like Anitcon's Odd Nosdam thing but much more surface noise and more competent experimentation (they love jesus to boot).
Quannum: Usually awesome. Sometimes cheeeeesey.
New Stuff: Med, Daedelus, Busdriver, Diverse, Bigg Jus, prefuse 73
Okay.
-
Bring ODB back to life!
-
not a single mention of cLOUDDEAD?
i felt like registering just to add them
That's because, though I like Odd Nosdam's production, Doseone (ESPECIALLY Doseone) and Why? are subpar MC's who seem more interested in creating lyrical collages than in actually working out a solid flow. It's like listening to the asylum scrawlings of a schizophrenic over perfectly produced beats, though if their intent is to irritate the hip-hop fan they're succeeding quite well.
As far as "GOOD" hip-hop goes:
KRS-One has fallen off in recent years. Ever since he did that BS spoken word for Funkmaster Flex and that collaboration with Goldie, he's become something of a parody of himself. That doesn't detract from his earlier work though.
I'm confused about why Independent, Non-radio hip-hop is generally viewed as "Good", while someone like Missy Elliot, Timbaland, Kanye West or even Eminem, despite having the respect of the entire hip-hop community, is considered "bad." I think that, much like the "definition of indie" thread, quality can't always be determined by how mainstream or not an artist is.
-
It's purely because (for me) I like listening to the indie/nonradio kinda stuff more. I'd also like to point out that purely because it's independant or not well known doesn't mean it's good.
-
Where the fuck are you people getting the Danger Doom tracks? I gots to hear me dat shit.
there's, a, uh, leak ok the whole album floating around the interweb at the moment. haven't listened to it yet though.
>_>
<_<
for serious, though, support cool people n stuff. by buying their things.
-
I've said this on this forum before, but Louis Logic is SICK. SICK SICK SICK. Look him up, PLEASE. Albums = "Blame it on the Hooch" and "Sin-O-Matic."
Also, Pocket Dwellers make some very good hip-hop/jazz fusion. They've got a jazz band, a DJ, and a VERY talented MC, and their music basically gets split down the middle between the rap side and the jazz side. The best tracks are the ones that involve both. Their website has some good samples of their stuff.
-
I gotta say, "Music to Drink By" is definately the best Louis Logic album.
-
I pretty much listen to Nas, Public Enemy and NWA.
Music to shoot white people to :)
~ Basim
-
Public Enemy
Their new album is gonna be the crazies.
-
Although my motto of life is: 'I don't listen to hiphop', I was most pleasantly suprised by 13&God. It's a relatively new project combining the German electronica collective The Notwist with US alternative rappers Themselves. Check them out on the Anticon site: http://www.anticon.com/a-13god.htm and see if they're going to perform any time soon near you. I was at one of their first gigs in Holland and was totally blown away.

Good list, though words can not express the extent to which Snoop Dogg has fallen off. Though I think that sentence does a pretty thorough job.
-
Talib Kweli's Beautiful Mix Tape is completely awesome and worth checking out.
-
FeltFeltFeltFeltFelt.
-
CrotchdusterCrotchdusterCrotchduster!
No, wait.
Crotchdusters 'Mammal Sauce' is pretty much the only song with rapping in it I like though.
Kompressor's collaboration with MC Frontalot is pretty funny as well, and I thought some Gorillaz songs were ok, but they were off the old album, and might have been less hip hop or something? I dunno.
But as far as hip-hop goes, it's like ska. I don't get it.
-
Since they haven't been mentioned yet (and their album is the only rap album I own):
Digable Planets
Rapping over sampled Art Blakey with references to Jimi Hendrix = awesome
-
Felt2Felt2Felt2Felt2Felt2.
Actually, it's not fantastic. It's a whole bunch better than the first one though. I only really felt (Ha! Get it?) 'The Two' and 'Aneurysm' off the first one. It should have been better, with Slug, Murs, and Ant. The new Atmosphere album (4th October, baby!) had better be seriously fucking great, because Seven's Travels and Felt 2 were pretty poor. Stuck was awesome though, so there's still hope.
Anyway, Listen to One Self. I saw them at the weekend and they were hellacious. DJ Vadim, Yarah Bravo and Blurum 13 = quite a supergroup. Ish. DJ Woody too, with the greatest scratching I've ever seen.
-
They might be mainstream-popular, but Ъпсурт are pretty good. If you know Bulgarian.
-
I think you missed my two favourite hip hop arists,
1. Butterfingers from Australia, they are awesome, I love the way they combine their rock with hip hop, plus funny, and political lyrics.
2. I don't really count these guys as Hip-hop, but my friends know more about music than me, Cat Empire, they're so up beat and fun.
Personally, I think Australian hip-hop has quite a different flavour from other countries, I quite prefer it.
-
anyone ever see buck 65 live? Caught him at a festival in 2003 and then on his own at the night and day cafe' in manchester a few months later. Live up-tempo version of the centaur is amazing! :)
-
*cough*BeastieBoys*cough*
I went and saw Mixmaster Mike last night! Amazing.
-
anyone ever see buck 65 live?
Yeah, I've seen him twice. He was pretty damn awesome both times. He stopped rapping in the middle of some songs to do some scratching, and he was not bad, which suprised me.
-
The Roots
Common
A Tribe Called Quest
Mos Def
...and a whole lot of stuff you guys mentioned.
-
Busdriver - has a ridiculous flow. Clever lyrics, too.
Cool Calm Pete - Asian rapper from NYC. Good stuff.
Edan - Hip Hop historian. Uses samples from 70's stuff to make brilliant collages of sound. See: Beauty And The Beat
MC Paul Barman - sort-of goofy white rapper. humorous.
Northern State - Female Beastie Boys. DAMN good. Check out Dying In Stereo.
Prefuse73 - Surrounded By Silence is good, but Prefuse73 Reads The Books EP is fucking AMAZING.
-
The Black Sea. I was impressed. Definately worth a listen, but I'm sure someone mentioned them already and I just missed it!
-
I'd also like to say that I actually like Kanye West. Attack me if you must, but I find his soulful production (especially on Common's latest) to be very endearing.
-
Most people diss his solo efforts, and rapping. He's a good producer, and I think most people agree. His production on Be is pretty kick ass.
-
You know who I really like? He's only half hip-hop, really, but John Legend's name speaks for itself, in my opinion. Ordinary People had me going out to buy the sheet music for his album "Get Lifted."
-
I love that album.
-
what about the Jigga Man?
also, Th'Corn Gangg
-
Felt2Felt2Felt2Felt2Felt2.
The new Atmosphere album (4th October, baby!) had better be seriously fucking great, because Seven's Travels... (was) pretty poor. Stuck was awesome though, so there's still hope.
But we got "Reflection", which makes up for all the crap on Seven's Travels :)
Dan (and all atmosphere fans) - You may have already seen this, but if you pre-order the enw album thru 5th element, you get a autographed soemthing or other, and a bonus CD that Ant made. I'm pretty sure the url is fifthelementonline.com
-
And oh boy, oh boy, oh boy is the new album a winner. Seriously, yo, I gots the clean advance and it's crazy ill. Or whatever the youth are saying these days.
-
STOP TRIPPIN, FOO

i like the felt 2. at least it was inoffensive enough to add to the ipod.
-
I like NWA, it's pretty funny.
I'm gonna download some Public Enemy in a few minutes. I like what I've heard of Sage Francis and Atmosphere as well.
-
FUCK youi all like fucking dfilso yeah whateve
-
Anything by Mos Def or Talib Kweli (or both) is pretty good, in my opinion. Especially the stuff on Talib's Beautiful Mixtape.
Edit: Damn, I repeated myself.

There is no such thing as good hiphop/rap.
I'm sorry.
moron.
-
Yeah, hasn't she heard Goldie Lookin' Chain?
