Title: The Mountain Goats
Post by: Mnementh on 05 Aug 2005, 21:40
*warning, this post contains some name dropping*

So I've been hearing a lot of talk about them around here lately and it makes me feel good that they're doing so well.  I've only been into The Mountain Goats since Tallahassee, but I've known lead singer John Darnielle's wife Lalitree (http://www.johnvanderslice.com/html/2002springtour/darnielles.html) for a good four years or so.  She used to post on my other place.

She's responsible for getting me into a crapload of bands before people had really heard of them.  The Weakerthans, Lightheavyweight (never really big, and now defunct), John Vanderslice, Interpol, and others.  She also got me into bands I wouldn't have discovered otherwise, like Jawbreaker.

I knew signing to 4AD would get them big, but even though they sold out shows back in 2003 in Boston I didn't expect the worldwide acclaim they're getting here.

One of my favorite bands. I kick myself for missing them the past two times they came here to Houston.

Their songs just make me happy...and hte lyrics are so descriptive. Some people dont dig the voice, but I love it.

True confession time: I only got into the Mountain Goats a couple of months ago, when I bought the Sunset Tree.  Well siree, that album just blew me away - hands down, one of the best releases so far this year, and since then I've been scooping up any of their/his albums I can get my hands on (so far: Sweden, the Coroner's Gambit, All Hail West Texas, and Tallahassee).  I am a bonafide fan - not a long-term one, sure, but a true one.  I also found out recently that they will be playing in Melbourne, where I live, on my birthday, and I'm very excited.

Not only are the Mountain Goats awesome, the cover of Neutral Milk Hotel's "two headed boy" is just as good (no more, no less) than the original. Which is incredibly rare.

Confession 1: I have never heard of the Mountain Goats

Confession 2: I hated the shit out of In the Airplane Over the Sea.

The Mountain Goats make me want to commit beastiality.

In a GOOD WAY.

I love the group, honestly. The lead is one of the best writers music has today.

Mountain Goats?  These are the mountain goats I remember from my last trip to Jasper National Park in Alberta.

I love The Mountain Goats. It took me a while to get into them. I'd had random mp3s sitting on my computer for a while, had heard them on Triple J radio a few times. I ended up buying We Shall All be Healed a few months ago for some reason (might have been because I  really liked Dance Music...?), and have since got The Sunset Tree and Tallahassee. I want more. So good. John Darnielle is up there with John K Samson as one of my favourite lyricists.

Hey, I'm seeing them at Northcote Social Club on the 11th in Melbourne. You going then, or on the 13th? In any case, I am also totally pumped.

I'm gonna be there on the 11th - and if I'm super-enthusiastic, I'll try and wangle a ticket for the 13th as well.  Do you look more like a Duncan, or a Sasquatch?  I'll keep an eye out for you!

EDIT: As for getting more Mountain Goats, I'd heartily recommend All Hail West Texas.  It's really good.

Mitch Clem was raving about them on his LJ a couple weeks back, so I checked out Dance Music. It's awesome and I must download more.

Most of  the lyric mistakes are minor, the mistake at the end with the "show you then leave you alone" instead of "take you and leave you alone" line is the only big one.

Their cover of Ace of Base's The Sign is the best thing ever. :P

I've known they were on absolutely kosher forever but the songs I heard were so so from them though I did not hear that much.  Maybe I should try to get some more.

Goddamn man. I LOVE THE MOUNTAIN GOATS! No, seriously, thought, if I could somehow create an anthromorphic representation of his music I would devote my life to putting a smile on her beautiful face. It feels like every other phrase which Mr. Darnielle utters send shivers up my spine and bores a hole into my mind in which it lodges itself permanently. Just fucking divine...

The Mountain Goats are playing Auckland in like September or something. I would love to go but of course I don't live in Auckland, so it would end up costing over $200 to get tickets and fly up. Humph.

The Mountain Goats seem like the ideal live band. Their songs are really simple, so they have the capacity to add ANYTHING and not put too much effort, and it would sound awesome.

Inspired by this thread, I went out last night and purchased "the sunset tree". I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet but I'm all a quiver just thinking about it.

That one, unfortunatley, is their least catharctic, but is their most beautiful. I love it to bits.

I'd disagree strenuously about it being their least cathartic.  I guess I haven't been listening to them for as long as you Merkava, but it's impossible not to be deeply moved when "Pale Green Things" brings the album to a close, after having listened to the whole thing and all the events it describes.  The fact that the songs are all factual rather than being stories only makes it all the more cathartic.

Catharctic is an expression of extreme emotion, like, say, the random chopping up of objects and people when angry. I think a catharsis involves heat and energy. I don't think you can be sad and catharctic at the same time, but I'm not sure exactly. My definition involved some Greek tragedy where a woman killed her kids to get back at her husband. I'll have to check on that.

EDIT: Nevermind, checked the real definition.

ca·thar·sis   Audio pronunciation of "catharsis" ( P )  Pronunciation Key  (k-thärss)
n. pl. ca·thar·ses (-sz)

   1. Medicine. Purgation, especially for the digestive system.
   2. A purifying or figurative cleansing of the emotions, especially pity and fear, described by Aristotle as an effect of tragic drama on its audience.
   3. A release of emotional tension, as after an overwhelming experience, that restores or refreshes the spirit.
   4. Psychology.
         1. A technique used to relieve tension and anxiety by bringing repressed feelings and fears to consciousness.
         2. The therapeutic result of this process; abreaction.

I guess, in some way, The Sunset Tree can be considered cathartic. I'm not an expert. I'd say it's more...moody, mabe?

Ehh, whatever.  Bottom line: it's a damn fine album!  And I think we can both agree on that.

I'd say I look much more Duncan than Sasquatch. um, I'm tallish and...I...wear glasses? Heh, in any case I hope to chat to some people there, as Mountain Goats fans can't be bad people.

and All Hail West Texas is probably the one I want to get next, actually.
