Who wins with the "Such Great Heights" versions.
I am going to say Iron & Wine, by a longshot. I mean I love postal service, it was the CD me and my girlfriend listened to when we first kissed. Yet, something about Sam Beam's vocals and guitar playing that just make his version stand out so much more despite the awkward chorus section not fitting in.
-
I prefer the Postal Service version - Iron & Wine's is lovely, but the tempo of the Postal Service version suits the song better, I think. However as far as voting in the poll goes, I clicked on the final option - gotta help out a beard-brother!
-
Hahaha, Inlander I chose the beard option aswell!
I love the cover art for our endless numbered days...
But as to deciding which song is better... That's just so hard because they're both good in DIFFERENT ways.
Don't make me choose :(

I don't think this forum understands the comedy option clearly.
Comedy Option, is a humorous version of a "No Opinion" or "They are the Same" vote. Note an actual ballad for a whole new candidate.
However, I understand Sam's beard is quite mighty, and makes him look like zeus.

Speak for yourself, my post clearly does that.
I can't help that his beard is super awesome.
-
Pfft, get on the beard train, Patatat, it's 4-nil!
-
impressively big beard or no, i prefer the Postal Service's version. i am not all that overly fussed with Iron + Wine. i can listen to it, i just don't go out of my way to do so. i am completely aware that this is something that Heather will probably be beating into/out of me once she gets down here, as she is positively enamoured with his music.

Est, have you heard The Creek Drank the Cradle? I'm just curious, 'cause everyone always raves about Our Endless Numbered Days, but Creek is actually much better in my opinion.
-
Not having heard either version (to my knowledge), I went with the beard option. If I had heard them, something tells me I would still have gone with the beard.
-
Even I voted for the beard.
I just can't help it, the mans beard is magic.
-
It is some fine hair.
-
I'm pretty sure this is one of those situations where no matter who wins, we all lose.
I'm back, bitches. You miss me?
-
If they didn't even remember who I was, I dunno if they missed you.
I missed you.
I missed your scent.
Anyways, since Sam Beam's beard is officially recognized under the Geneva Convention as an entity unto itself, it gets my vote.
-
ho wait a minute, are we saying that Sams beard is better than both his and whatsit smartass Gibbard's music?
... I guess we are...
-
Postal Service for me, the awkward chorus isn't that great like you said, plus I feel it doesn't keep the right mood of the song.
The only cover version I think is better than the original is Nico doing Jackson Browne's These Days. (And maybe Elliott Smith covering Nico's cover).
-
When I heard the Iron and Wine version it occured to me that it sounded like the original version rather than the cover, and I've had that comment from someone else as well. As to which is better... it's a tough call. I enjoy the Iron and Wine version more at the moment because the original brings all kinds of things to mind which I would rather were not brought to mind. I can't decide.

Aww how cute, Emo love!
I definitely have to go with The Postal Service on this one. Sam Beam does a nice take on the song, but to me its a cutesy love song. Its a GOOD cutesy love song. I think that Jimmy's music and Ben's voice make it a complete cutesy love song. I especially dig the electro-beeps and bips, especially at the beginning. I love listening to it on my iPod as I get the beeps and bips in each ear. It gives quite the auditory pleasure. Plus when I hear teh Iron & Wine version I see floating M&Ms.

Oh wow, I never noticed that O_O; Oh wow. That is... really insane. anyway.
I'm going to go with the Postal Service. I like Iron & Wine... I do. However, I just feel like the Postal Service puts an edge on the song that suits it slightly better.
But, I almost voted for the beard. Almost. It is quite mighty.

My friend likes the iron and wine version better but I gotta agree with inlander.

Woman King beats both of them, and that's just an EP. :P
I'll have to go with Postal Service. I&W's case would be helped if he didn't use that picking rythm or that tempo in more than half of his songs. I like Mr. Beam's work, but come on. :P
-
I think comparing the two versions is like comparing apples and oranges, so I voted for the beard.
I like them both, and sometimes I like them back to back.
-
Postal service. For some reason the pacing of the song just seems off in the Iron & Wine version, and Sam Beam's drowsy vocals don't help.
Also...
I don't really like Iron & Wine
-
I kind of hate the postal service, so for that alone I vote Iron and Wine. Also, the creek drank the cradle is a fantastic album, oh my god it is. Also, check out the touring bassist's own album. He records under the name langtry but his name is Patrick. He is my neighbor and a lovely dude.
-
the iron & wine version puts me to sleep. it brings out the flaw of repetition in postal service's music, i think.
plus i like fast pop music to slow acoustic most times.
