Short question: Is the 128 MB PCI Express x 16 ATi Radeon® X300 SE card more powerfull than the 256 MB ATi Radeon 9600 pro?
-
After a google search, I found this (http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/131).
ATi Radeon 9600 Pro
Core Clock: 400 MHz
Memory Clock: 600 MHz
Memory Interface: 128-bit
Memory Transfer Rate: 9.6 GB/s
Pixels Per Clock: 4
DirectX version: 9.0
ATi X300 SE
Core Clock: 325 MHz
Memory Clock: 400 MHz
Memory Interface: 64-bit
Memory Transfer Rate: 3.2 GB/s
Pixels Per Clock: 4
DirectX version: 9.0
As you can see, the Radeon wipes the floor with the X300 SE.

Basically, the X300 series is completely useless for gamers. And the 9600 is old.
In case you consider buying either of these: Don't. Get an nVidia 6600GT instead, they're cheap and a damn lot faster.
That is, if you want to play games.
Note: There are no PCIe versions of the 9600 out there that I am aware of. In case you have a PCIe motherboard, getting a 9600 is useless anyway. In case you have an AGP motherboard, getting a PCIe card is useless.

Im buying a new computer, and I was looking at a Dell. It had the X300, now I got 9600 and is rather satisfied with it, I want it partly for gaming. But with the 9600 pro Ive been able to run FarCry at max with very little fps drop and my processor is just 1,33 ghz, so with a 3,33 ghz, Farcry (along with HL2) should run steady even at max, right?
(dont want to spend that much money, keeping the 9600 and buying a new comp without a graphics-card should be cheaper)
-
buy a 256mb x800 XT, it's only about $400 and it's superb.
-
Since you mentioned the Dell came with a PCIe video card, the 9600 won't work anyway. It's an AGP card, they're not compatible.
So I guess you have to get a new one anyway. Since you don't feel like spending metric assloads of money, look above for my recommendation. You can get 6600GT cards over here for about 140 €.

Build it yourself instead of buying a Hell...I mean Dell computer. It'll only last a few month before all kinds of shit hits teh fan and you'll ONLY be able to upgrade through Dell, since they make their computers with many parts designed ONLY for Dell computers.
-
Its just that I dont know shit about computers really, so building my own is out of question =(.
-
What Dell model are you looking at? It might have PCIe and AGP slots. PCIe is the new thing, but AGP isn't completely dead yet.
-
There are no good motherboards out there that have both AGP and PCIe. They're PCIe motherboards with a fake AGP slot connected via PCI, which is extremely slow.
ALi is working on a chipset that will offer both, but so far, no motherboard has been released.
-
i just bought a 9600
go me
now to install it
-
"Only" $400. No thanks.
I use a Radeon 9800 XT with the BIOS re-flashed with something a little better performing, then overclocked. I get 410 MHz easily 24/7 with it. And Ive owned for a year, and it cost $200 when I got it. Yes, I still use AGP8x. Everyone hopped on the PCI-x bandwagon as soon as I bought my motherboard (to a rig I still cant afford to finish, one year later)
-
(sorry, double post, this stuff happens)

Ah, I stand corrected then. I'm still not completely up to date in the PC world. I'm mostly a Mac guy who uses PCs for gaming.

or better yet, an AiW X800 XT
-
Update: First motherboards with the ULi (which I incorrectly called ALi before) M1695 are coming up.
Given the reviews I've read so far, it's as fast as the Nforce 4 and has both PCIe and a normal AGP slot. If anyone feels like upgrading from a current AGP-based system to a Socket 939 system in the near future, wait for motherboards with that chipset, it looks very promising and you can keep your current video card and upgrade to a better one in the future.

If you must have PCI-E, then get a Radeon x700. Its cheap and effective.
Forget dell. Even if you cant build your own PC, there are PLENTY of better places to buy a gaming rig. Try alienware first, they cater for that market.
-
Alienware is also about 5 times the price of a Dell machine...
I do agree though that there are much better computers out there than Dell.
-
Why does one need a gaming rig? What games could anyone want to play that is not Starcraft?
-
The old Lucas Arts adventures, of course.
Not that you need a faster computer for that.
-
Oh man, I can just imagine someone running out and buying an Alienware computer to play Monkey Island on. Talk about overkill...

Well, this is the best deal Ive found:
Radeon 9800
3 ghz processor
1 gb RAM
120 gb harddrive
5.1 surround
17 t nonflat screen
dvd-r
+ all the things Ive failed to mention like a soundcard
and a motherboard wich will be able to handle atleast doubled memory and alot heavier processor and videocard.
for 13.000 swedish kronor, (1 dollar is 7 kronor). Its alot more expensive than I thought, but Ive checked around alot, cant find anything better.
-
Thats horrifically expensive if ive done my maths right! Over twice the cost of an equivelent in the UK.
At that kind of cost, its worth asking a UK retailer if they will ship to sweden.

Holy crap! That's about $1800! Definitely keep looking.
I configured a system at the Alienware site that is a little better then yours. Price: $1669. You can probably even find one for less. Alienware computers are always overpriced.
