Title: Local awesomeness goes national
Post by: sp2 on 23 Aug 2005, 21:16
So, there was a "pimp your local bands" thread a while ago, but I'm too lazy to dig it out, plus, it pretty much sucked anyways.

ANYWAYS.

One of the really awesome local bands from the Denver area, DeVotchKa, are going to be touring with the Dresden Dolls for a leg of the Doll's tour in October.  Dresden Dolls are worth seeing on their own, but DeVotchKa have an amazing live show (which is why they sell out large venues in Denver and Boulder) and are definitely what anyone would have to call "musically adventurous."  SEE THEM.

So, any of you have some really good bands from your local scene that are going to be out and about that we should make an effort to see?  I'm not talking about the "Well, I'm from Montreal, so I guess Arcade Fire is a local band!"  I'm talking about bands that are really well-known in the local scene but have virtually no national recognition that damned well deserve it.

You know, so we can go to their shows and buy their CDs and spread the word.

Psh, America-centric no?

Fuzzed up Isle of Wight dwelling bastards of sanity Overlord are doing (or maybe just have done actually, meh) a tour of Scotland and the North of England sometime this summer. A far hunting ground, but necessary, they're far too extreme for the south. There are literally five people on the island who appreciate them musically. I recommend seeing them if you have a chance anyway. The idea of seeing them live with a decent PA system makes me wet, especially now they've kicked the shit members out the band and roped in crazy Mike, and can actually perform their best songs.

Well, hey, if you know any bands touring the US, shit, let us know.  But unfortunately, fewer bands cross the pond than anyone would like.

I don't know. I've seen a fucking mind-numbing number of awful American metalcore bands.

Didn't you know?  Americans can't make metal.  We just sucks at it, is all.

To be fair, to be fair, you can occasionally produce a band that puts out a few decent solid albums. Then they get their own line of shoes.

Damned fine shoes though.

There's really only one local band that I'm really caring about here in Kansas (although DeVotchKa are ace; Why are they touring everywhere else in the midwest?) and that would be the Three Businessmen. Basically, it's these three 40 year old guys who work at a record shop here (one owns it) and make songs about Hunter S. Thompson wishing he shot himself in the foot and Mobsters and rapists and people cutting off their foot with lawnmowers. It's amazing.

Well, what's national in little ol' Belgium here is merely local in the States. Over here, you're making it if you can afford a van to transport your crappy punkrock band to the next big town over, to be the support for the crappy punkrock band that did the same before you. And there's a genuine chance the headlining band's drummer is your bass player's big brother. Needless to say, no one really cares more than they have to by bloodline.

Then there's your occasional surprise, that makes it big times in what seems less than a finger snap. K's Choice, Hooverphonic, Soulwax/2 Many DJ's, to name a few... But those are just exceptionally good bands that made it outside of the plebs's sight. We don't have anything in between, just real crappy or real good. But if I have to hype one band that most surely deserves an international career, it's http://www.fiftyfootcombo.com. Pure awesomeness, they are.

Kai: heh... Those Three Businessmen guys sound exactly like the kind of band Rob and guys from High Fidelity would have, if they were 40. That definitely sparked my interest! Site? I suppose I could look it up, but the laziness bug bit me. Like, when I was born. And yay for human interaction!

Well, there's DeVotchKa and then there's The Devotchkas.  DeVotchKa is a denver avant rock band with a lot of easern european influence.  I think the Devotchkas were a shitty riot grrl band, but not certain, cause I've never heard of them.

But yeah DeVotchKa are awesome.  Both Una Volta and How It Ends are completely killer albums.

Unfortunatly, they don't have a site. They pretty much just write the music and the shows for themselves, and I've only found one record In their own shop. Although one of the guys (who I'm a good friend of) has a tattoo of Zappa on his leg.

Ah, probably the second.  I've never heard them just of them and I reckon they are a shitty riot grrl band, considering who I may have heard of them through.  Right on for them being able to tour abroad more though.  Good bands becoming more known is potential goodness.

Hey Everest, I'm having trouble getting their website to work,  but I did some google research and it sounds like they're pretty sweet....you have a link to any mp3s somewhere?

Dear Everest:

Firstoff, Fifty Foot Combo: I go to their page, and I see what looks like five of the Residents' Eyeballs (www.residents.com, best band in the universe) with a shriner's fez I have sitting about 3 feet from my head I bought off an old guy who kicked the bucket. This is easily the best first impression you could make on me.

Then I went and listened to the music. Good stuff. Very good stuff. I'll have to get one of their albums somehow.

Ah.  The website's working for me now.  SWEET.

I just went to check and it seems their website if offline or something... The link worked when I posted it; I copied it to post here, so yeah... Weird. But either way: I don't think you can download entire songs from their site, just some samples, the kind you probably found while googling to assure yourself they're "pretty sweet" ;)

If you're really interested, I could send you the one full mp3 I have by them. How's about that?

Edit: lol. I took so long writing this post, that you caught up with me... Ah well. Offer's still up, if you can't find any mp3s :)

I heard two clips, and they're good enough for me to warrant that they won't suck and deserve my money. So yeah. They just earned themselgves like, 15 bucks.

Hey, if I'd get 15 bucks from someone after listening to 2 of my clips, I'd be goddamn happy! :)
