Hey all,
I've just started to listen to the new Death Cab record on MTVu's The Leak. So far it sounds really mello, emotional without being overly emo. I want to know what y'all think. (PS: The Leak is here: http://www.mtvu.com/music/the_leak/death_cab_for_cutie/plans/ )

From what I've heard of the album, it's very much like you said. Unfortunatley, Death Cab forget that they only really work as a guitar band. They seem to be trying their hardest to get rid of their guitars in favor of the electronica, turning them into a Postal Service-like mutant. I like the new album, but I wish they'd go back to the sound of their first 3 albums.

Wait, where's the joke option that also means "I don't like Death Cab For Cutie and Ben Gibbard needs to choke"?
-
Where's the jokeoption that also means "I don't really care but people who bitch about selling out should choke"?
-
Now where is that "SELLOUTZ" comic?
-
Wait, where's the joke option that also means "I don't like Death Cab For Cutie and Ben Gibbard needs to choke"?
That's the SP2 Option.
-
What Kai said but with obligatory remark about selling out.

I need to make that smaller; best possible avatar ever! But I have no idea where my photoshop disc is.

With my compliments sir.

That's the BEST THING EVER. and Khar rules.

and now for some non-Gibbard bashing...
I listened to the album a few times when it first leaked, and, at first, I was impressed it. It sounded more like the older, slowcore Death Cab. Upon subsequent listenings, however, I found most of the songs to be rather muddling and un-impressive.
I think it's a decent album, and several tracks ("Marching Bands Of Manhattan", "Different Names For The Same Thing", and "I Will Follow You Into The Dark") are pretty excellent.
The funniest thing I noticed about the album is that Gibbard seems to have picked up some Phil Collins inspiration from the Postal Service's cover of "Against All Odds". Listen to "Different Names"... I totally hear ol' Phil on that track.

You know, Gibbard was a much more interesting singer when he sounded whispy and sullen. The contrast of the emotion shown in the instruments and the lack of emotion in the vocals made their music much more interesting. Old Ben seems to be trying too hard.
Bring back the jangley guitars and whispy vocals, please.

it's an alright album. I think Ben Gibbard is very talented.
-
I think it's terrible, and would say so if there was the option. I still like many of their early albums, but it's been constantly going downhill in my opinion. Transatlantacism began that, and Plans continues it.

I like their earlier albums alot more, but I don't mind plans or trans. I think that we have the facts and were voting yes is 1 of their best.
-
I think it's their best, since it's the peak of their sound. It was their most unique, I'd say. Something About Airplanes comes in at a very close second, as well.
-
I would have to agree with the general disliking of Death Cab for Cutie. but I don't care about selling out at all. For example, Blink 182 used to be an alright band, but they were never going to be anything great, so they just conformed, and they are filthy stinking rich. Sellouts are just poor musicians who know about using the system, and don't care about their music. Go sellouts!
-
I haven't seen anyone's rationality for hating Death Cab. It's annoying when people constantly attack Ben Gibbard. It's Chris Walla that I don't really like, in terms of how he's steering the band, quite frankly.
-
Yeah, I've never heard a reason for all the Ben Gibbard hatred. And he seems to be the reason for a lot of the Death Cab hate. It seems like it's just the current cool thing.
-
I like Plans but I don't love it.
So i put down PLEASENTLY SUPRISED.
Since i'd heard it was shite.
-
Remember when Ben Gibbard wasn't shit?
No?
Oh...right...
-
Yeah, see...that doesn't really tell me anything. Your post is even more idiotic after I asked what the reason was for all of the Death Cab hate.
-
Amen.
-
Ok, let's see: Everything Ben Gibbard's got his thumb stuck in has completely insipid lyrics. While this isn't necessarily a bad thing alone, he also has some amount of pretention, which means that what is shit and what should be accepted as shit is somehow thought to be, well, not shit. DCFC has been going downhill into the dregs of dull, dull music for their entire career. That's not to say they were interesting to begin with, but they were passable, and now it just keeps getting worse. If you're bothered by the fade-into-the-background music that eveybody seems to complain MTV forces on the general TV viewing public, you have no business enjoying Ben Gibbard. He and his band are like thousands of other boring, boring bands out there.
-
Remember when people cared about Weevil's opinion?
No
Ah well then...
-
Slightly off-topic, but: Damn man, why does everyone pretend like pretention is a bad thing. MORE PRETENTION, I say. When you are totally into yourself you are more likely to do really weird stuff, and really weird stuff equals new most times. Without pretention there would be no Doors, no Beatles, no (insert really good band).
It's weird that in the indie scene everybody is pretentious but likes to pretend they are not. I say let's just admit it, and enjoy the music. And let them admit it and make great music. If a couple of people with it suck, move on to the next who has it and is great.

After listening to the whole album a couple of times, I'm liking it more and more. I especially love the rendition of Stability (Stable Song) at the end. Other than that, it's actually pretty good. Once I got used to the changes, I really began to enjoy it.
-
Well, nuts to all this "yo man, Death Cab are such selloutz! They're so lame!" shit. I just got the album today, and I'm super excited! I thought Transatlantacism was even better than the previous (The Photo Album) a generally a great record. Whatever people say, I still think Ben Gibbard's lyrics are kinda sweet. But to each his (or in my case her) own. I'm gonna go put it on and enjoy!
-
I never understood the attacks on his writing. I think he writes some of the best stuff out there. I like the use of metaphors and the way he creates a story around an emotion rather than just complaining about it. I really feel for each character he creates in his songs.
-
Agreed! He's also the only singer that I can think of that has written songs aboout dumping someone as tender as though he was the one who got dumped (Tiny Vessels, Some Day You Will be Loved). Also, he's definately fast that age where people can say his metaphors and stories are "sappy teenage poetry-esque dribble" because they are obviously not.
I just listened to the new one and it's quite lovely, I Will Follow You Into The Dark, Crooked Teeth, Your Heart Is An Empty Room, Some Day You Will be Loved and Summer Skin are my favourites thus far! YAY!
-
Is it wrong that I had flashes of U2 in the beginning of Your Heart is an Empty Room? XP
I definently love Crooked Teeth. Unlike Sound of Settling, it's poppy, but not generic or awkward. They actually sound like an Indie Rock band with that song.
And Stability is a beautiful song, but on the EP, it was stretched to 12 minutes, with nothing but a reapeat of the lyrics and the same riff over and over again. It sounds better shortened and with a crecendo.
-
Deathcab's earlier stuff was better. Tiny Vessels off of Transatlanticism and A Movie Script Ending (I forget which one that's off of) are my favourites. I love Deathcab; it makes me feel like slow-dancing in the rain/snow.
And it is also rockin' that they are from near where I am.
(Note to self: find out where Ben lives and bake him a thank-you cake)
-
A Movie Script Ending was off of The Photo Album.
We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes is definently their best. It's pretty much perfect. It's on my favorites list.
-
I was happy with the album. Very good stuff.
-
I don't really care what people say, this is a pretty darn good album. I especially like songs 4 and 5.
