Title: I have recently discovered that not all rap is terrible.
Post by: Micolithe on 08 Sep 2005, 10:16
It's true. I just got back from class and when I came back, someone I know wanted to send me a song. "Alright" I thought. I knew this guy liked rap (he's the equivalent of an indie kid that likes Rap and Hip Hop. He hates most of what's on MTV now with the exception of Kayne West.), so I humored him and listened to it.

The song was RJD2 - Aesop Rock - Kill Em All. It was pretty good considering that up until 20 minutes ago I hated Rap. The song doesn't think it's Gangsta, as far as I can tell. But then again I'm a middle class white kid living away at college.

Um, congratulations, I guess.
The song is by Aesop Rock, but was produced by RJD2, in case you were wondering why their were two artists.
I'm not quite sure what else to say.

I'll be dating black girls in no time.

And is that avatar Tilly & the Wall?  All three of those girls are hot, but that one looks espeically bombastic in the icon.

Aesop Rock is pretty good stuff.  There is definitely some pretty good hip hop out there.  At this moment my brother is at a Hieroglyphics concert.  Del The Funkee Homosapien is amazing, you may know him from the first Gorillaz album.  He's also in Deltron 3030.  J5 is definitely some good stuff.  Blackalicious has an awesome song that he did with Ben Harper called Brainwashers that everyone should check out.  Ozomatli is badass too.  For some reason I hold a special place in my ears for Black Eyed Peas and NWA...

I love ska...from Bob Marley, to Madness, to Reel Big Fish, to Catch22, I love it all.  Also Choking Victim is badass.

There should be a genre called 'skrap'
which would just be a fusion of ska and rap.

Forget I said that, its taken.  I'm going to register skrap.com, don't you even think about it.

I have listened to dangerdoom's new album and i must say it is great.  Not just because every song has a reference to ATHF and awesome soundclips from all the characters.  This is a must listen to.

MF Doom + DJ Dangermouse = basically some of the best rap music you'll ever hear.

being from tennessee, the majority of my high school (well i was a senior 3-4 years ago) rode around in either ricer cars or big-ass trucks listening to country or rap music. there were a few that were different, but i would say 70% of the school were into basically rap and/or country.

now, a lot of the rap they listened to was shit. but, there are a lot of unsigned and/or unknown people that are really talented with words. some of them have been mentioned already (dangermouse, mf doom, aesop rock).

and then there is the rap of the 'self-made' groups, where they basically decided they were going to live off rapping and producing... and now they are driving cadillacs. my favorite is three 6 mafia: project pat, dj paul, lil' wyte, frayser boy.... but whatever.

Oh my fucking god, Del's made a COMEBACK?!  Next you'll be telling me that there's a new Young M.C. album coming out!

(Bear in mind that I haven't regularly listened to the radio for about 10 years now.)

Indeed you do stand corrected. Bob Marley was actually playing ska before reggae was even invented.

you are very obviously a suburban middle class white kid if you think there is something unusual about a rap song not being gangsta.

Public Enemy = Greatest rap group of all time

Other rap I enjoy:
Del tha Funkee Homosapien
Michael Franti & Spearhead
NWA
Naughty By Nature
Immortal Technique
Dee Dee King (The Ramone's bassist's hilariously bad rap career)
MC Hawking (The renowned physicist's hilariously awesome rap career)

Yeah, I've never been big into rap, ever, but there are some songs that I either live with or actually like. I decided to be a corporate whore not long ago (and how) and I bought the new Gorrilaz album. For some reason they have somebody with them that appears to want to rap in every other one of their songs. Sometimes it's ok and there aren't too many obscentites, from what I can understand, so I don't mind.

all the uk hip-hoppers on here are going to lynch you.

i sort of get the impression that mike skinner's a latter-day hip-hop uk version of men at work. as in "please, no, international community! don't judge us! we actually have some good artists! it's just that xxxxxx is getting all the media attention for some unknown reason."

A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, Kool Keith (aka Dr Octagon aka Dr Dooom) and Binary Star are good too.

A buddy of mine who's into underground rap is trading CD's with me; I'm lending him indie stuff, he's lending me underground rap. We're calling it "The Underground Exchange" because we're unimaginative.

It's going to be rad.

The swedish rapcollective Looptroop is the bomb. Or atleast, they used to be. You should check out Modern Day, City Symphony. It is a masterpiece within modern hiphop.

Fuck the hip-hoppers. The Streets are just really, really, really BAD. Not to mention revoltingly chavvy. Americans don't get that I suppose, but really. ugh.
