Title: strange musical recommendations
Post by: sp2 on 09 Sep 2005, 15:10
So, anyone who's sufficiently a music geek will probably have had some instance where they got musical recommendations from the last person they'd expect.

So I guess the question is, what's your story?

Me, the weirdest person I got recommendations from was my shrink, who suggested Jawbreaker.  True story.

My ex-girlfriend reccomended me Sigur Ros (though I had already listened to them), which was different because usually I reccomended her music. Though it kind of makes sense because the people she smoked with always listened to Sigur Ros when they were high.

Also my other friend who is (or used to be) mostly into Blink-182 and The Used reccomended me The Books.

It seemed that every time I went to her house, my ex-girlfriend would be listening to Simple Plan or something like that. She even tried to convince me one time that I'd like them.

Not sure why we didn't break up sooner than we did.

BOOBS LOL

Er, anyway, a better story that I thought of was a friend of mine that just randomly decided to give me a copy of "Whatever and Ever Amen" by Ben Folds Five. I ended up loving that album, and the 2 of us and his sister even ended up performing "Fair" at the school jazz concert later that year.

Acid Bath from my old internet boyfriend.

Yeah, that's about it. I got most of my music from my parents, friends, or just went out and fucking got it myself.

Most the music I've been recommended have been by friends I am not surprised by considering we became friends based on music taste.

There was one time when my one mainstream friend brought up The Jesus & Mary Chain though... that's perhaps the closest we got to understanding each other.

Yahr. I thought it was just a bit more unusual because, y'know, you don't really imagine many same-sex couples whose 'song' is 'The Leper Affinity' by Opeth.

LEPROSY

Okay, I've done enough caps talking for tonight. In other news, I got 3 Rush albums on vinyl for 3 bucks and I found a perfectly good copy of Half Life on the ground in some bushes near the nerd store here! RAWK

My Philosophy Teacher got me into Iron Maiden(I wasn't really into music at this time and as such never listened to them. This was about five-six years ago, when I was eleven or twelve and for some reason, disliked all music).

Obviously pretty fucking cool.

My mom got me into Roxy Music, and she was really not glam at all* back when they were the fucking KINGS of glam. Still, they are terrific.

*She was a hippy art student. Goddam pinko-commie hippies and their goddam freedom of expression!

A couple of days ago someone I know from school reccomended me Patrick Wolf, and later another reccomended Kraftwerk (both of whom I'd never heard of before), then that evening I logged on here and saw both of them mentioned in the Electronica Anyone? thread. I found that quite odd, because I've never actually heard any bands mentioned here mentioned by people I know at school, other than the mainstream stuff that's occasionally mentioned here (because obviously I'm going to have heard people at school talking about bands like Coldplay and Green Day).

Also, a friend of mine who I've known since I was about two, but in the last few years has become a chav, reccomended the Kaiser Chiefs to me, which was kind of shocking because I was under the impression that her music taste consisted of about 100% RnB.

My Philosophy teacher got me into Sun Ra, The Congos and Karlheinz Stockhausen. In return I gave him Venetian Snares, Autechre and Masonna. Clearly, he is all kinds of crazy awesome. In fact, the only time he even failed to impress was when he tried to get me listening to Serialism. The mighty Stockhausen and Iannis Xenakis were winners as usual, but Arnold Schoenberg was a step too far. So, yeah. Early 20th century avant garde for the win, I guess. Olivier Messiaen was pretty good as well, but not good enough to make me like Serialism.

My year 12 philosophy teacher spent just as much time tutoring me in the life and works of Radiohead, Joy Division and My Bloody Valentine as those of Sartre and pals. :D

edit: and flipping back through the thread again, this doesn't seem to be such an uncommon occurrence...

I just realized that  a ska kid was the first one to really make it clear to me that I need to listen to more Zappa. That guy is my hero.

My school does not offer philosophy. Because LAUSD is 12 wangs of gorilla.

I guess I'll be taking Physcology next year, and the psych teacher definately listens to good stuff. I always hear him blasting Faith No More and Miles Davis and X out of his room in the morning. He is a little Chilean man and he dances around to the music. He is also my hero. He was playing "Clackity Jones" (by the Pixies if you don't know) this morning. He is my hero 9 times.

A teacher of mine, who normally while in class listens to all this really cheesy crap, got me into a bunch of classic French pop from the 60s and 70s like Charles Aznavour and Serge Gainsbourg. And anyone who has listened to Serge knows how weird it would be to hear a teacher recommend this to me.

On another note, my PE teacher was obsessed with Rowan Polanski's The Tenant, where Polanski crossdresses and throws himself out of a window at one point. And he shared this obsession with us.
