Title: The Dresden Dolls
Post by: Coreh on 09 Sep 2005, 16:01
My friend recently introduced me to The Dresden Dolls, and I think they're pretty awesomeful. For those that don't know what I'm going on about. They're from Boston. It's a guy and a girl (think White Stripes sans redundancy) and it's basically just drums and piano. But anyways. It seems that many of their songs are about relationships, and sad-sounding like a muh-uh-fuh-uh. Except for Girl Anachronism, that's like, the Heinz ketchup of lunacy. That is, it's 57 varieties. Also, it tastes good with fries. So like, if any of you want to hear any of their songs, I guess just... look them up?
Oh by the way, they paint their faces white. Like little china dolls. Hence the name.

Anybody else like them or am I alone?
Anybody hate them and feel like posting that they hate them to try to lower my self-esteem?

Someone's posting drunk.

Also, yeah, they're teh good.

They got mucho playtime on local radio (Boston area) stations a few months back. Mostly with Coin-Operated Boy.

This sorta desensitized me to 'em, even though they're still good.

("I liked them before they were big!" </poop>)

I saw that one of my female friends, who is one of the few people I know that has music tastes like mine, listens to them. I tried them out, I was quite impressed.

ditto on the gimckness.

Also apparently the lady singer used to do street theatre, she performed at the Adelaide fringe festival. I have only heard the few tracks that they have played on my local radio but to me I hear the street theatre coming through loud and clear.

I've seen her perform on the streets (at least I believe it was her).
It was creepy.

I love this band, I love Girl Anachronism, Half Jack and Good Day.  They seem like a deranged version of 'Fiery Furnaces'.

The two songs I've heard were utterly unique and utterly brilliant, I keep meaning to buy the album.

I like them because they sound so different. The only gripe I have about them is that sometimes their note compositions are a little grating on the nerves. I heard that she didn't have much training in writing songs, most were created out of the blue.

Fun band though.

How do you train at writing songs??

Music theory is quite complex, or so I hear.  I imagine that it's something to do with that.  Thing is, how many popular bands have had actual training at writing songs?  I mean, obviously the people that write songs for big pop acts will have had training.

I quite like their second cd, was quite gutted that I missed Nine Inch Nails a few months ago, 'cos they were supporting.

Theory is quite complex, but it's also almost totally irrelevant for writing good songs.
