Okay, I decided to do one of Dora. Enjoy!

Damn man. That's nice! The folds on the jeans are great. My only big issue is the mannishness of Dora. Her chest and shoulders are much too large, her face doesn't feel very feminine to me and the size of the upper torso just ruins it for me. It's awesome artwork, that looks like a guy who feels sexy enough to feel his own ass with a smirk.
Terrible nit-pickiness aside, I'm SO gonna go check out your site right now! :D

wooboy
i have to agree with the above; dora looks hella-mannish... like a butch lesbian. i mean, i guess if that's how you see dora, cool... but it's not very feminine.
the man-ness is coming from all those flat, square lines. curved lines give a much better impression of femininity.
great artwork though!

Dammit, you're right, now that I look at it. That's what I'm saying, in reference to my fan art for Faye, that I just don't have a lot of practice drawing females. I tried softening up her features a little bit (her jaw did seem a bit square); let me know if this is an improvement or not:

I never thought of Dora as a butch lesbian, but she has a cool confidence that I tried to portray here. The big ass-stomping shoes are a throwback to her goth days.

Ehhhhh... Again, really awesome artwork, but yeah, too masculine... Even with the rounded jawline, she still looks way too much like a guy. I wish could I put my finger exactly on what it was so I could help out more, but I can't seem to... Also, I think you went a bit too far with her figure... Yes, there are many references made to how thin she is, but I never pictured her as quite that emaciated. Heh. Might just be me, though... Great job, nonetheless. I find it hard to provide any meaningful criticism to things that I know are far better than anything I could do...

IMO it the shoulders what make her look like une dude. try rounding the right soulder in particular, girls don't have delts as pronounced as that, normally anyhow.
still looks good though!
-
Sure she has pronounced deltoids! She just does a lot of seated dumbell presses, okay?! Nah, you guys are right. Lately I've been getting into Egon Scheile, which is why I tend to draw my figures very angular and spindly. Oh well, like I say; I should practice drawing females more. Thanks for the honest feedback!

Yea, the size of the chest and shoulders compared to the hips is kinda mannish. try plumping up the hips a slight bit(I know Dora's a skinny gal but maybe this'll help) and reign in the ribcage to slightly smaller than the hips. Just a thought
Two great comicky artists I follow are http://faith.rydia.net/ Faith Hicks and http://www.nickbradshaw.com/home.html Nick Bradshaw. I swear, between the two of them they could make a comic starring cactuses and rubber boots and it'd come out feminine and sexy.
hehehe sexy rubber boot wearing cacti :D
Anyone wanna draw that?
-
hey! twentyfour! stop posting and get drawing damnit, how long have i been waiting for a new damn comic!?
EDIT: nevermind...
-
Definitely the hip to shoulder ratio has to be changed. Plus, I think she looks too muscular and skeletal to be feminine and sexy. I think you just need to soften things up a bit, especially 'cause Dora is pretty girly - confident yes, but very feminine.
I dig the boots though.
-
I imagine Dora as dancer skinny. Kinda lithe.
-
i love your style! i feel like the mannishness might be in part because of the porportions between shoulders and hips but how to tweak it isn't immediately obvious..
-
This might be helpful- I hope this isn't nitpicking,...the neck muscles may just need to be softened...there is something with the neck. I don't know. I think the clavicle is good.
The more i look at her the more right she looks. It's probably just a stylistic thing.
-
As I was reading through this, I was planning on commenting on that. She's got too much muscle in the neck; try making it smaller and less triangular in that point. Also, you might try making the torso less triangular as well.
One more pointer, try making the eyebrows skinnier.
Enough of the crit, this is an awesome piece of art. I think all you need to do is tweak your visuals a bit.
-
i'm ok with the eyebrows.
-
I love that word, clavicle.

I like the style but it does look like a guy and her arms are very bony.
That out of the way its a decent pic and besides its the thought that counts

Hey man... I don't know if I can help about the Dora's maleness bit but in my experience it seems very very common the man-who-doesn't-know-how-to-draw-girls problem lol. I, as a girl, have trouble to draw MEN. My guess is that we start drawing what we know better - boys start drawing boys, girls go for girls. Female and male anathomy are very different on an skeletal basis and with different proportions. We have larger pelvis and smaller chests and the average girl body has a "8" proportion: chest and pelvis are the same size, waist goes for more or less 4/5 of the chest lenght in realistic anathomy, and way more thinner if you're into Jim Lee's wasp waist style of drawing. Indeed, many girls, even the skinner, have hips largest than their chests. Other important point: girls have softer muscles than boys. Indeed, most of the time they're not aparent at all, if you're not a gym maniac. Smooth the lines until it gets very subtile.
Funny how this is exactly my problem with male anathomy. I'm used to another proportions. Male body works well on the "t" shape. Larger shoulders, pronounced muscles, smaller hips and usually the waist line is the same lenght of the hips. I tend to not draw sharp body lines so my males always finish having a girlish look (I wish I drew manga style lol, thus would make my life easier).
If you want to discuss anathomy further, try me at MSN ([email protected]), I'll just love it :) - remember that I'm on GMT -3 btw :)
-
I LOVE the colouring/grading/shading on that Dora pic... absolutely beautiful!
I agree with the proportion complaints, but overall I'd give that a 95%!
(Docking 5% for large shoulders, but I don't see how her face is mannish... just the shoulders).
You must teach me in the ways of colouring/shading...
I am like an open book, educate me!

she is way too dark.. Looks like a guy... But the art is way cool... Great job with the jeans and mug... I want that mug now.....
-
Looks pretty nice... if I get around to doing some fan art I'll definetly post here.
