Dragonforce is pretty good silly power metal, but to be honest aside from Herman Li's crazy solos they aren't that great.  Their song writing is mediocre at best.

If you want awesome fucking power metal check out Blind Guardian.

pfft, Manowar is the way forward!

Admittedly though, watching queues for Dragonforce, WASP, etc gigs is the best thing ever.

So many middle aged people with bad haircuts, leather jackets shouting stupid stuff.

Top ace fun.

3 Inches of Blood, Bal-Sagoth, Blind Guardian, Rhapsody, Therion, Nightwish. YAY power metal but deep down we all know that it is the lowest form of metal besides nu metal and metalcore.

Just for their cover of "Mr. Sandman", I'll give 'em that.

I've been digging a band called Powermad recently to fulfil my power metal needs. Also, for ridiculously great thrash, I have vowed to start listening to more Sabbat.

Dragonforce (I've only heard 2 songs, "Disciples of Babylon" and something about Apocalyptic Fire or something) are good fun. Kinda Helloween'ish. And who doesn't love Helloween?

Come on, how can you utter such blasphemy? :) Power metal in the same sentence as nu metal?

I do actually appreciate the cheesiness of power metal, but it really doesn't mean I love it ironically or something.  Dragonforce is ok, but from what I've can get sort of samey and repetitive.  Blind Guardian on the other hand ...
Also Rhapsody is simply amazing, though not as cool as Blind Guardian.

Dragonforce is awesome.. in small doses. Listening to the entirety of Sonic Firestorm without stopping is a bit tiring. The cheesiness of it doesn't bother me at all. There's something about that kind of unashamed cheesiness that I find appealing. :P

Yeah... I don't agree. There's much better power metal out there; Three Inches of Blood, ManoWar, Rhapsody, Gravedigger, etc. I feel that there are better bands than Blind Guardian to recommend to people and for me atleast, DF's songs come in much higher than BG.
No offence meant, I should have put forward my own recommendations.

Also, Never forget Running Wild, PIRATE METAL FOREVER

I remember listening to Dragonforce for the first time in my friend Tony's 1963 Ford Falcon (he put a CD player in it and put in a sweet sound system so nyah) when he drove me to school every morning. It was "Valley of the Damned" and the drummer's double bass was slamming the everliving shit out of my eardrums.

Best day ever.

No worries.

I don't really consider Manowar to be power metal, personally.  They're more traditional heavy metal.  But still they rock.  Other bands play, Manowar kills!!

3 Inches of Blood and Rhapsody are both good.  3IoB has those "core" screams in the background that I'm sort of iffy about though..

What is Gravedigger like?

I listen to a lot of metalcore so I kind of dig the screams...

Gravedigger is pretty grym. Good fun and a bit more serious than most power metal.

Getting off-topic here: Trier is a fucking shithole full of right-wing assholes. The only good things about Trier are Karl Marx and the Ex-Haus.

And as for the Krieg thing: I didn't get it at first either, but you just have to watch the usage of Krieg in here and ignore the actual meaning of the word. After a while, it starts to make sense. For example, Avril is totally not Krieg.

Although ... I'll make myself an avatar. Avril ist über-krieg. (krieg in this case is an adjective so there is no capitalization, damnit)
Title: Dragonforce
Post by: KharBevNor on 10 Oct 2005, 18:17
Basically, if you want a guide, all usage of the word Krieg by black metal fans stems from, essentially, a mockery of the seriousness of the Nargaroth album 'Black Metal Ist Krieg', and anyone who has ever seriously used the statement 'Black Metal Ist Krieg' and meant it. Many things are Krieg, more things are not. The cat is Krieg because he's wearing a Morbid Angel hat and looks mean as fuck.

I dig all cheesy power metal to some degree but Blind Guardian is a band I love with absolutely no irony.  I saw them in St Paul and they brought the place down like true metal warriors.

If Blind Guardian is Tolkien then Dragonforce is the DragonLance saga.  Still fun, but it doesn't quite resonate the same way.

Most power metal nowadays seems to suffer from a serious lack of power...I therefore support Satan Stole My Teddybears suggestion to rename the genre "pitifull metal", with the possible exception of Rhapsody for being so cheesy they actually got Christopher Lee to narrate. That's so cheesy it shoots right through cheesy and ends up in awesome \m/

I just realized why I like Dragonforce more than some of these other bands that are grouped with them, like Dragons & Wizards and Twinlightning. Dragonforce is ridiculously upbeat. They're just happy about the cheeziness.

On that note, what can you recommend, oh ye gods of metal?

Power metal is awesome.  It's probably one of my favorite subgenres of metal (right behind prog metal, I'd say).  However, it has to be along that thin line of being all classically influenced, but not hilariously cheesy.  Dragonforce crossed the line, as did Rhapsody and Manowar.  Blind Guardian is really toeing the line on a lot of their songs, but I like them.  Nightwish is the same way (I wonder who they're going to get to replace Tarja.  I personally hope it's someone who completely doesn't try to imitate her).  Iced Earth is well back from the line, more towards straight metal, but I like them, too.  I could go on, but this seems to have already been gone over in the thread's first life.

But whenever I hear a Dragonforce song, I just want to run away in the other direction before my ears implode from the sheer stupidity.

Yeah, power metal... Don't get me wrong, I pretty much love it all, but sometimes it is just cheesy. Dragonforce is the worst offender I can think of.

Manowar seriously makes me believe they're about to go pour oil on themselves and charge into battle naked with braids afire, so I guess if you're not convinced it would be super-cheesy. (their album art is HILARIOUS, though.)

Wow, I totally didn't know tarja had left, shows how little I follow bands I like. I like where their sound has gone in more recent albums, it's gotten away from overly synthy ballads and into a more conventional metalish sound (with the notable exception of tarja's vocals, of course.)

Hmm, thanks. After the last post I started pawing through the nightwish site looking for something like that, but didn't find anything other than that they had fired her for taking actions against what the band stood for, or something.

*edit* Just read it... that really is sad. I knew that she stayed a little bit seperate from them sometimes, but just showing up to hit the studio then dissapearing again? :(

I hope they get an awesome high male vocalist or another good female to counterbalance marco and make more good noise.
