Hey I am like a complete n00b to the Indie scene and I am looking for suggestions on what I should start listening to.
I used to be big into classic rock and my first Indie band I have listened to is Broken Social Scene.
Please any suggestions would help.

That's where I started.
-
There aren't any bands you "should" be listening to. Find something you like and enjoy it.
But, ya. The recomended listening page has some good music which you might like.
-
Seriously, the indie scene sucks. In fact, all scenes fucking suck. Fuck the scene.
-
"Scenes" only suck if you limit yourself to them and they greatly vary from city to city. Use them as a guide and find a feel for the music you like and listen to it. Most of the music I listen to is either local or foreign but there is a fair amount of the big nationally defined "indie" (formerly known as alternative) bands mixed in.
Start with Jeph's recommended listening list and listen to some Indie Pop Rocks (http://www.somafm.com./listen/) on SOMA. Get a feel for things and see if you like it.
-
Listen to Scum - Protest Life (http://www.nocturnalart.com/scum/mp3/SCUM_protest_life_videoedit.mp3).
It's better than anything you've heard before.
-
That's a little to hard for my tastes but he can comparision listen to a bunch of different stuff at www.epitonic.com. Epitonic's list is hardly complete and it misses many of the best bands but you can listen to a bunch of stuff you'll never see get air time on the radio.

But . . . I'm already fucking the police. Now I have to fuck the scene and the police.
. . .
I feel like a whore.
-
Ok well thank you. I guess I will search around and find out what suits me best. If some were offended by the word Scene.... well I'm sorry but not sure how else to put it lol. But yeah. Will start searching for bands and sounds that I enjoy.
-
Not offended. I just think it's stupid. The indie scene really does suck, too. Sure, some of the music is good, but the scene is shit. Okay, yeah, I know what I want to do with my well-earned money! I'm going to spend $20 to go to a concert and PRETEND LIKE I'M NOT ENJOYING THE MUSIC!!!
Fuck that shit.
Plus, plenty of indie bands suck shit. You really need to sift through all the Interpols and Franz Ferdinands to find the At the Drive Ins.

corrected.

I'd suggest not trying to figure out the indie scene. Every now and then a good new band shows up, like Wolfmother, but for the most part the best music is still behind us. I say stick with classic rock, to be honest. Music shouldn't be judged on anything but whether or not you like what you're hearing, and you're more likely to find something good if you look into the past. The new stuff is all a tossup, but at least you know you'll find solidly awesome music in the past if you look hard enough.
-
A warning... people who like Indie also are terribly opinionated. Take everything we say with a few grains of salt. Or a whole bag of it.
-
Indie fans are not opinionated. And you're a dipshit. Who probably likes Coldplay.
-
Besides, this thread has been done a thousand times.
Look at the other topic "what should I play for my radio station" or something.
And look through this part of the forum.
There should be at least three or four threads just like this.
-
Basically:
A) Most of the music out there is shit. We all disagree on what is and isn't good. However, there are a lot of bands in the scene that suck that everyone likes because they're indie idols. But, sorry, nope, they suck. Just because someone says they're awesome doesn't mean you should believe them.
B) We're all pretentious twats. Don't believe a thing we say.
C) The indie scene is pretty lame. Head nodding does not a fun concert make.
D) Listen to At the Drive-In. They are the motherfucking bomb.
-

That's the sort of statement that would crash a computer's hard drive.
-
ever been to an Of Montreal show?
Arcade Fire?
There's no head nodding. At least not from the people who actually give a shit about the music.
I saw tons of "scenesters" there standing around talking and looking bored, but I was definitely front and center with all the other music lovers, taking in the energy from the band and getting down with everyone else.
-
I've seen Arcade Fire, and yeah, sure, there are a few folks in the front getting innto the music, but goddamn, there are waaaaay too many scenesters. It may be a Boulder thing, I dunno, but the scenester thing is a pain in the ass. There have been plenty of post-hardcore shows I've seen lately that were filled with fucking scenesters that did nothign but sit there when the band had plenty of energy and some folks (i.e. me and my friends) were trying to get down to the music. Part of me wants to just slam into the stupid hipsters but another part of me realizes that it will probably result in them getting hurt, because, you know, they're waaaaay too fucking thin.
I hate scenesters.
-
You really need to sift through all the At the Drive Ins to find the Interpols and Franz Ferdinands.
corrected.
That's exactly what I was thinking.
-
But . . . I'm already fucking the police. Now I have to fuck the scene and the police.
I was certain you were talking about Sting's Police. It took me a second to connect the dots and say, "Oh, he's talking about an N.W.A. song! I get it!"
-
check out Stars, Feist, and Valley of the Giants. they all contain members of Broken Social Scene, and are on the same record label. a good branching out, if i say so myself.
-
The concept of scenester boggles my mind.
Do such beasts really exist? I don't believe I've ever seen one! Or maybe I just turn a blind eye to them, or something.
Not all people who aren't very energetic/lively seeming are scenesters. I have a friend who is awesomecore, and she has awesome music taste and definitely spends a lot of her time looking for new music and you know, just enjoying it, but she's a total statue at a show. She just stands there, and nods her head. She doesn't care about people's opinions of her, she's not at the shows to be "cool" or whatever, she just simply enjoys the stuff but is rather very boring about it! She's not a scenester at all.
And advice for who's new to the indie "scene" and all, I think things are just pretty simple. Just keep looking for music whatever it is, and not let people's opinions get to your head. If you end up liking any band, no matter what kind of band it is, for whatever reason, then that's awesomecore. I don't think one should care about how credible or deep a band is as long as you simply *enjoy* them.
Don't shy away from checking out the "big" indie bands either, because- just because they already have a large established fanbase doesn't mean that they need less support or anything.
-
the word "Indie" JFYI, is derivative of "independent"... meaning that it's supposedly divorced from the more commercial end of music (Read: MTV).
I like to believe that it also means you should completely ignore what other people think and do your own thing. Nothing is more indie than liking the bands and music you like, regardless of wether other people like them or hate them.
Oh, and if anybody WAS offended by the word "Scene"... don't be so fucking over-sensitive. :p

Other bands part of the Broken Social Scene collective:
Do Make Say Think
Metric
K.C. Accidental
-
Try to get them to dance.
Me and my brother try to get people to dance to the music (if teh gig is small and teh music is good)
If they are a scenester then they won't dance if they reall enjoy the music and they nod their head a smile (i.e look like there having a good time) then they are good ask who there favourite band is.
-

This is because you're wrong. Sorry.
-
This conversation is as boring as men's tennis. What happened to that rule where we don't talk about whether we like Interpol anymore? That was a good rule.
-
taking in the energy from the band and getting down with everyone else.
"Taking in the energy" is so nouveau hippy. I'll hang in the back and dance a bit, but I don't need some other dude's beersweat getting on my arm while I'm trying to enjoy the music.
-
I listen to Modest mouse mostly. Find a friend with a ton of cds and sample them. find what you like and listen to it Its not rocket science, you listen to what you like and dont listen to what you dont like
-

Spoken like a true elitist. You know... the ones who spend $20 on a concert and pretend they don't like it. ;)

Seconded for Metric. And you really need to listen to Deerhoof. You have to go into it thinking "this is going to be the most awesome thing ever!"
Also, The Walkmen are way good.

i'd like to see you banned.
p.s. is there an ignore function on this forum? ive been looking (in all the wrong places?)

I see your sarcasism meter is not working. If you spend a little more time in this subforum you'll start to pick up on the paradies. ;)

I love you Will:Wanton Sex God. Will you have my retarded babies?
-
well i started out with bands like "At the drive in", but during that time my tastes have moved to prog rock and back to indie again, even though the line between the two is blurry at most times.
well thats just what i think.
the other thing is alot of the people i talk to associate indie with innovative sounds, that the sounds in indie are new and different to the sounds of the contemporary music mainstream.

NO. NO IT IS NOT. Prog Rock != indie. at all. The line never gets blurry, ever. It's like comparing Cheese Whiz and Don Knotts. YOu can never confuse them.
-
So you're saying that everything prog and prog-related is entirely seperate from indie, despite the fact that indie really isn't a genre and therefore has no boundaries and if, for example, the Fiery Furnaces aren't slightly proggy I don't know what is?
BLANKET STATMENTS = FOR YES
-
Basically, "indie" is the most pretentious term ever. You can pretty much apply it to any genre. By adding the adjective "indie" to any genre, you pretty much say "this genre, but more pretentious."
So.
Indie rock - rock, but more pretentious
Indie pop - pop music, but more pretentious
Indie hip-hop - hip-hop music, but more pretentious
Indie prog - holyshit pretention feedback loop
-
If they are a scenester then they won't dance if they reall enjoy the music and they nod their head a smile (i.e look like there having a good time) then they are good ask who there favourite band is.
Or they could just be a person who doesn't really like to dance, either because they feel self-conscious or because they feel like dancing consumes brain cells that could be used for listening.
I'm just saying. Not dancing at a concert doesn't necessarily mean you're trying to be a wet blanket or a pretentious prick.

I don't think I've ever heard someone say "indie hip-hop." Most people I've met either say "underground" or "independent" (but only in reference to the label). Pretentious hip-hop, on the other hand, usually comes from Anticon.
-
Any decent metal band would stab themselves in the eyes with their own hip bones before using the term indie to describe their music.
Even if their album was an audial interpretation of Ted Hughes anthology 'Crow' utilising the textures of minimalist second wave black metal, neomedieval folk music and ambient industrial*, and was distributed in a limited edition of 616 on hand-numbered cassette and CD-R by the bands own label run out of their bassists garage.
*Someone please do this.
-
well both genres are really part of the alternative music area, and in some of the "Lesser" prog bands it can really sound a fair bit like an indie band.
a funny joke, i had some stupid emo try to tell me the other day that at the drive in was emo...
-
Me: ...Flaming Lips... (I'm not sure what the context was)
This dude: Who are they? Some emo band?
Me: No... Just no.

thanks for that recommendation, it seems pretty good so far.
-
Anyway, why do these kids want so desperately to be indie when they probably haven't experienced anything else music has to offer?
Could it be that they're shallow trend whores who simply want to be cool?
zomg.
-
Could it be that they don't feel like beating their brains with the dark Scandinavian tones of whatever is currently fashionable in the metal scene, and would rather listen to some tunes that they can enjoy and rock out to without risking the loss of teeth in a mosh?
Surely not. :)
-
Could it be that...what...I...I...listen to things that aren't scandinavian metal?
NO!
Could it be that I value a diverse and...NO...not an interesting musical taste? Why on earth should a musical taste be interesting? I mean, good grief no, one should definitely, without a shadow of a doubt, stick to the pitchfork flavour of the month, and never explore things like, say folk, world, drone, metal, dance, rap, punk, jazz, prog, classic rock, country, industrial, classical and all those other niggling little genres! I mean, were people to shop around the almost infinitely variegated entirety of music there's a possibility they might find that they don't really like The Flaming Lips that much, but instead prefer, I dunno, Django Reinhardt, or Cypress Hill, or Throbbing Gristle, or Stiff Little Fingers or....GODS! They could like almost anything! BUT NO-ONE WOULD THINK THEIR MUSICAL TASTE WAS COOL AT ALL AND THEY WOULDN'T GET TO GO TO THE GOOD SHOWS AND NOD THEIR HEADS!!!!
TRAGEDY AND CALAMITY.
-
Could it be that I WAS TAKING THE PISS??
NO! SURELY NOT!
:)
Edit: Cypress Hill FTW. Well, Black Sunday and Temple of Boom, anyway.
-
My points still stand. STAAAAND TAAAAAAALL!

People coming to the forumz of an indie-music themed webcomic to ask about . . . INDIE MUSIC?!
IT MAKES NO SENSE! THE HUMANITY!
Hey, you now what is even more irritating than shallow trend whores? Music snobs whose self-esteem is so eroded they need to take down forum newbies! Those dudes need to chillax.
Good thing there are none of these here. :)

Khar and I had this argument when I first got on here. You should know that I lost. In fact, I admitted I lost at the time. :P
-
I am already chilled. My blood is so cold I have a court order banning me from going near liquid metal terminators.
-
i think you guys should remember one rule... most people are sheep!!!, if we were to tell them that high pitched wav files were super indy then they would probably follow, well at least till their ear drums burst into rifles of blood.
No offence intended mates, but there is more to music then a scene, like you know the music itself.
on another topic, i need some uptempo jazzy stuff for my girlfriend, she loves jazz but doesn't know any artists that perform that kinda stuff, and we live a fair way out of a city so there are no local jazz clubs, and i don't really know any either... anything that has caught your ears?
-
Khar and I had this argument when I first got on here. You should know that I lost. In fact, I admitted I lost at the time. :P
I wouldn't dream of arguing with Khar - his faith and steadfastness in the face of adversity shames me. I was merely lampooning, in the gentlest possible way, like his mother might. If she was Australian and tired. :)
