Title: Female singers
Post by: Rilian on 28 Sep 2005, 21:49
I was searching through the archives trying to find good bands whose lead songers are female, and I found a few bands, but I could find no posts dedicated to female vocalists.

I figured I'd ask for some recommends, and plus anyone else who's looking for female singers will hopefully be able to find something that they will like as well.

Here are female singers I currently listen to:
Nightwish
Queen Adreena
Sleater-Kinney
The Fiery Furnaces
Juliana Hatfield
Angelfish
Neko Case
Poe
Ella Fitzgerald

I'll listen to anything once, so feel free to recommend whatever you like

For the sake of everyone who'd prefer not to look and see if a band has been mentioned yet, here's a list of everything else that has been mentioned.

Current ones I am digging:

Grace Slick (of Jefferson Airplane)
Gale Morran (on Chick Corea's "The Mad Hatter")
Carla Kihlstedt (of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum)
Patti Smith, as always

Also, I am now turning this into a revival of the "hot people in bands" thread with Carla Kihlstedt.

If you want something a little different, Hiretsukan is a hardcore group with a female vocalist. That threw me for a loop.

Also, Marianne Faithful and Controller.Controller are both pretty good.

But one of my all time favorites has to be the one-and-only PJ Harvey. The woman is a haunting presence and she caries on a friendship with Don Von Vliet, a.k.a. Captain Beefheart.

Under Byen(it's danish though)
Sorten Muld(again there's a language barrier, but their singer is good)
I hear Diamanda Galás is amazing in a pretty scary way.
Eivør Palsdóttir - Krakán(likewise about the language, she sings in føroyar on that one)
Gåte(sings in norwegian)
Julie Doirón
Jomi Massage
Martina Topley-Bird(recorded with Tricky on his early albums, but was miscredited as Martine)
Mirah(because she's so damn cute)
Nina Simone
Aretha Franklin
Portishead
Beth Gibbons and Rustin' Man - Out of Season
Tina Dickow(She's called Tina Dico in England and sung on Zero 7's latest, specifically Home, but her album Notes is good. But unfortunately the new one In The Red seems to be shit :( )
Yeah Yeah Yeahs(she's manic for sure and that's exactly why she's great)
Cocteau Twins(The voice of God as one journalist said it)
Low(Mimmi Parker has nothing short of an angelic voice)

Edited since I forgot both Cocteau Twins AND Low, shame on me.

Arch Enemy

I'm still not sure how I feel about her. She remindes me too much of Otep. I've not heard a hard metal band with female vocals that I've liked, but symphonic black metal has some good ones; Therion (2 girls, 2 guys, operatic), The Summoning, Tristania (has both male and female).

Try Matriarch or Astarte.

Apart from those, bands I listen to with female vocals include:

Inkubus Sukkubus
Lacrimosa
Nightwish
Siouxsie and the Banshees/The Creatures
Dresden Dolls
Cruachan
Within Temptation
After Forever
Epica
Sirenia
Tristania
Theatre of Tragedy
Sopor Aeternus & The Ensemble of Shadows (Anna-Varney Cantonadea is transgendered, so technically this is true).
Angelspit

And probably some more.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Evanescence.

Then again, I suppose they're considered mainstream, so probably nobody here would ever like them.

Melt Banana. Look no further.

Also, Spitting Off Tall Buildings. I admit that they're not very good and their lyrics are mostly really bad, but the singer's pretty good-looking, so ... wait, not a good reason? Aw crap.

Kira And The Kindred Spirits
Blonde Redhead
Erase Errata
And because I simply can't resist: Kittie.

edit: Goddamnit, what's the use of the search feature to determine if someone has already mentioned Blonde Redhead if it tells me nobody has and then I find out it's wrong? I'm not editing my post, damnit!

I just thought I would second all the Mint women (Cub, Neko Case and her work with the New Pornographers) that are getting shout outs on this thread. Other greats off this label are Carolyn Mark, a country-ish singer who recently released an album of duets, or young and sexy, who are along the same lines as the New Pornographers.

Hirut Beqele was widely considered the first lady of Ethiopian swing/r&b/rock/whatever back in the late 60's/early 70's. She is amazing, if the Ethiopian way of singing doesn't put you off. It's very, umm...sharp, and might sound a bit tuneless upon initial exposure.

Rita Abadzi recorded up until around WWII in the rembetika style (Greek folk music with heavy Turkish influence). R. Crumb loves her, and that's good enough for me! Seriously, this is powerful stuff.

Yanka Dyagileva recorded mostly solo acoustic material as well as material with her own group, Great October, and other groups like Communism and Survival Instructions. In Russia, she is considered something of a punk legend (having recorded during the CCCP period), although most of her connection to punk rock is through her association with Egor Letov of Grazhdanskaya Oborona (Siberian punk legends of the communist era), and his meddling in some of her albums. I doubt she would sound very punk to most people outside of eastern europe, anyway. She committed suicide by drowning in the Volga in 1991, but luckily all of her albums have been re-released on CD, as well as many live recordings. Check her out. Her music has a very unique atmosphere. Very russian, I guess.

I know these are kind of weird recommendations, but I noticed you had a non-english subcategory included in the initial post, which really does open things up a bit. I have music by these artists, if you can't find it/don't know where to look.

I'd forgotten that Sol Invictus, Ensiferum and Skyclad have bits of female vocals. Only on a few songs though. Sol Invictus and Ensiferum both have entire songs by female vocalists ( December Song, Tears) but they're session members in both cases. I think some of the female backing vocals on some Skyclad songs (ie Womb of the Worm) might be by the fiddler, whoever she was back then. The one before the one before Georgina Biddle.

They're an unsigned, Italian psych-pop band that take in more genres in the 25 minutes their EP lasts than most people listen to in their whole lives.

Their singer is called Noemi...and she is hot. As well as singing like the bastard child of Amy Lee and Bjork. In a good way.

By the looks of the edit list you've got WAY more than enough to check out, but because someone mentioned Tricky's 'Maxinquaye' album before, I thought I should add:

Martina Topley Bird

She's the female vocalist on that album. She also has at least one solo album, and it's quite good actually.

The Veronicas!!!!111!!21

Actually I wouldn't hate them so much if that tune of theirs that gets played on the radio here wasn't so damn catchy.

Not sure if any of you have heard of her, but I'm liking Emm Gryner right now.
I have a few of her albums, but I'm liking "Science Fair" the best.
Oh, and she Canadian!

Feist
I've only hear parts of her songs but it sounded good.  Recommended?
She's from Calgary too.

Does Robert Plant count?

No Robert Plant dose not count.

I have nothing to add to this , only because I don't listen to any female singers. Don't like them.

Oh man, this thread makes me really really happy. I heart female vocalists, and so many of my favourite bands have been mentioned in this!

Ones that haven't:

Jack Off Jill (if you like angry goth rock, and especially if you like Queen Adreena, which apparently some people do)

Rasputina (if you like non-angry goth rock. And cellos!)

Nedelle (formerly of Nedelle and Thom. If you like good music in general - some really nice mellow stuff, and she has an AMAZING voice)

The Delgadoes (honestly one of my favourite bands ever)

As well as Beat Happening and occasionally Belle and Sebastian!

Rasputina's really corny.  And lame.  For gothy cello stuff, seriously.  Matson Jones.

Go Betty Go has a female singer (and perhaps other female members).
I saw they weren't on the definitive list of bands with female singers so here ya go!

The Iron Maidens. They are one of the best Maiden cover bands, and they are all female. They are actually really amazing.

So. Uh.
No-one's mentioned Lauryn Hill.
Now normally I'd just let that kind of thing slide, as I'm sure y'all just 'forgot'. If, for example, she was just the female member of The Fugees, I could maybe understand this oversight. The Score was a freaking amazing album, but Blunted on Reality wasn't as good, so forgivable.
The problem occurs when you remember that she also made The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which is an 100% mega-awesome album.
So basically, get your collective shit together.

One more time, for the slower kids.

LAURYN.
HILL.

Sure, there was Miseducation, but then there was also her Unplugged album, which, at best, was hit and miss. She released two albums, the other being The Score of course, that were really good at spots. On the whole, though, her track record is patchy and the new stuff doesn't look all that good either.

a few more...

Shikhee from Android Lust; not just singing, she's the whole damn band.  Also appears with I, Parasite and on Monstrum Sepsis' album Deep Sea Creatures.

The Weekend: Lots of buzz here in southern Ontario.  Metric like, only sillier.

Horrorpops: not a fan of pschyobilly, but they can be amusing.

Lucia Ciafarelli(sp?) : solo career and female vocalist on KMFDM albums since MDFMK.

Sow: Friend of Raymond Watts <PIG>, lots of french, sultry and sleezy.

Die Form: Nice female vocals, german darkwave.

Flesh Field: the name escapes me at the moment, which is horrible, but they just changed up their female vocalist and the new one is much stronger and can do more than just goth-croon.

other bands/artists: Aryia, Neikka RPM, Claire Voyant, Drain STH, Kidney Theives/Free Dominguez, Black Tape for a Blue Girl, Echo Image, Faith and the Muse

The Extremely metal Fiance searched through his MP3 list and could only come up with one more band.

Flowing Tears- which are apparently "Heavy rock with clean female vox".

And are quite similar to Within Temptation

Broken Oath have a female singer fronting them, I think they have a MySpace page.

Also, is there not a female vocalist in Circle Takes the Square?
