Title: Electropunk/Futurepunk
Post by: Rizzo on 03 Oct 2005, 00:13
Hey folks.
I was wondering if people could recommend some good futurepunk/electropunk/synthpunk.
For those who don't know Futurepunk is an infusion of industrial ideals with punk style. Make it fast and brutal.
Click here (http://www.futurepunk.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=7) for a better outline than I can give.
I personally recommend Katscan, Error, Sexpositions and NZ's own NUTE as good examples of this.
Sometimes known as Digital hardcore, ala Atari Teenage Riot. I personally don't see any similarities with hardcore so it's Electropunk for me.
There is also the slightly similar genre of synthpunk, combining punk style and attitude with electronica. Probably best known for this are The Faint and The Epoxies.
Basically I'm looking for more. Sites with free mp3's preferably.
All the sites below have free mp3s.
Katscan:

Error:

NUTE:

Sexpositions:

Probably a bit too tilted towards industrial though. Still a great band.

Yeah, I've downloaded all their mp3's from their site. Pretty good. A bit generic in places but I really like the layered vocals.
Try NUTE, you can get their entire first EP from their website, and their most famous track "Reflecting on Skin and Bone" or ROSB as it's commonly known. They're pretty industrial.

NUTE reminds me very much of a slightly musically superior Marilyn Manson, in terms of the vocals/mood. No that it's a bad thing in my perspective. Yup. A heavier, more industrial Manson.

I listened to a couple of the Katscan mp3's, and it just sounded like darkish breakbeat. Maybe I'm missing some crucial elements, but if not, I'd try Evil Nine and B.L.I.M.

Nothing wrong with Manson, as long as you don't say he's goth.
They're pretty well known in the goth/industrial scene in NZ. They've just released their first album which is doing really well. Even made it into Rocksound which is an international magazine(Big deal for NZ).

Cheers though.

The Mad Capsule Markets.

It's kind of electro-j-punk, but it's utterly bonkers and utterly brilliant. I'd recommend their albums OSC-DIS or 010, or maybe even the recent live or best of packages.

I remember seeing Manson's Personal Jesus cover when it first came out. I thought 'geez, he's taken another band's song and it STILL sounds exactly like every other song he's ever done.'

Then, about a week ago, I heard Depeche Mode's original version of Personal Jesus.

It turns out, Manson's just been off Depeche Mode this whole time.

I'm still looking for more!
Surely there's some other people here who don't just listen to Modest Mouse on repeat, wishing that their lives were as exciting as Marten and Fayes....
Get some Venetian Snares down ya!

You've clamped down the genre a bit, 'tis all. How about Contrastic?

http://     http://s37.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=26QPQRAURW5091THLVPST49H7H

More electro-metal, but still has a similiar feel to it in my mind.

Pretty rocking as well.

It's true. I'll broaden up a little.
I'm looking for things that are fast, electronic and agressive preferably. Electronic and agressive are the buzz words here.

I couldn't get that song cause it's in wma... I don't go near that shit. Cheers though.

Post by: KharBevNor on 08 Oct 2005, 05:08
Bit cutting off your nose-ish imo. Also, won't touch microsoft but embracing apple? Makes me chuckle for some reason.

Well, this is an mp3. I think this gets electronic and aggressive down well enough:

Count Nosferatu Kommando - Jim Beamed Ahnenherbe TV (http://s38.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0GUK3KL9XGPJ30K4LJXYF53KGO)

If you like the Count, go for early Anorexia Nervosa, Aborym, Trollheims Grott and the aforementioned Contrastic.

Also, are we allowed self-promotion? Of course we are!

http://www.myspace.com/deaththroes

One of my projects. Electronic, aggressive and extreme. You can listen to the whole Signal Decay EP at http://www.last.fm/music/Death+Throes/+albums.

Probably a bucket-full of white noise above what you were looking for.The first minute of the autoplay track on the myspace page is just the intro btw.

Also, as a final note, being aghast at the blandness of peoples musical tastes round here doesn't get you very far.

Electronic and agressive? Why didn't you say so in the first place?

Personally, if you're looking for that kind of stuff, I'd skip futurepunk or whatever the hell it's called and get some Breakcore, Breakbeat, DnB and Dubstep in your life. Breakcore you seem to have a start in with Venetian Snares, but you could also check out Chevron, Doormouse and Epsilon. Maybe Kid606 and knifehandchop. You can get samples for most of those guys off http://www.boomkat.com.

Breakbeat wise, I've already suggested Evil Nine and B.L.I.M. Ideally you want to get the Essential Mix Evil Nine did, if you can find it. It's a mix they did for Radio 1, so it should be around on your favourite P2P program. It's number 603 [20/03/2005], which might help. It's got a bunch of tunes by both artists along with a bunch of other darkish breakbeat.

DnB wise, Evol Intent (http://www.myspace.com/evolintent), Exile, DJ Craze and Diesel Boy are all pretty agressive and such. To be honest, there's entire record labels releasing agressive, downright nasty DnB. Renegade Hardware spring to mind, but there's plenty of others.

Dubstep is pretty obscure, but you should be able to find some around. It's basically instrumental Grime, as far as I can tell. Take Dizzy Rascal and replace the lyrics with mountains of sub-bass. Good stuff.
It's all about Digital Mystikz, Skream and Loefah. It's all about this CD (http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=18568)

I don't use a p2p, don't want adware on my computer. I tried to find BLIM and Evil Nine but all I got was this bizarre flash animation.
I've been listening to D'n B for a while but it doesn't really do it for me. I find it too controlled I guess. I'll check those bands out though.

As for microsoft, I don't touch their music software, I've had it delete my files too many times. I do use some of their other software though.

Try DC++ or IRC filesharing if you don't want adware. Neither has ever given my comp anything, and indeed, there's no way it can. I do use Adaware and Hijackthis. There's such a thing as being too paranoid.

It's a lie, I'm terribly uncool as all of my friends(Non myspace o course) can attest.
I'm really liking this CNK. I could listen to this for ages. Not what I was looking for but still good. More metal should sound like this. I'm pressuming this would be classified as metal.
I advocate Zyklon for something slightly similar.

I highly recommend their full-length as CNK, 'Ultraviolence Uber Alles'. The two demo/ep thingumies released as simply Count Nosferatu aren't as good, but ok. They deserve respect simply because they have a song about how much they hate black metal scene kiddies, and they call themselves 'Hellektronika'. Not to mention their schtick is nazi satanist cyborg vampire anarchist fetish terrorists. Or something. All I know is it involves a lot of shotguns, motorbikes, blood and gimp masks.

Their almost impossible to find via google website (http://thecnk.free.fr/index1024.htm)

If you want some very insane industrial black metal on the same plane of existence as the count, Aborym is your safest bet. This is by far their most EBM track, but the rest of their stuff is just as skull-crushing, only in a more metal fashion (normally...they're experimental as hell)

Aborym  - Chernobyl Generation (http://s37.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3NBWG93ZP2JVI2PGLXCW6ELS8I)

These guys mainly deserve respect because of their day-glo raver corpsepaint:

Nazis for the lose.

Bands that include random nazi/fascist imagery for shits, giggles or to satirise the right wing (CNK, Hanzel und Gretyl, Laibach, Current 93, Death in June, Marduk, Rammstein to an extent) for the win. I must point out that the bands 'nazi' schtick was almost entirely contained in the song that you just listened to, and you seemingly didn't notice it (The Ahnenherbe were the wierd supernatural division of the SS, the guys Indiana Jones fights). Mainly they dress as terrorists or gimps. Offend! Offend! Offend!

Yeah, I haven't listened to the lyrics really, on listening again I can hear it. Still like it.
It's just that using Nazism as a shock factor is totally repugnant. Millions of people died in WWII so those scum wouldn't take over and yet we still have people parroting their stupid ideologies even today. I find it utterly ridiculous that people can even begin to lean that way in this day and age. Really it's just a matter of ignorance.
On the otherhand, they seem to be doing it just for the supernatural factor so it's not so bad but I still don't like it.
I guess in the long run as long as people don't get tolerant of it then it'll all be ok.

That Polysics song rules! I wish I could understand more of it... my Japanese is pretty terrible.

i never really paid much attention to this thread until now. which is a pity, since "electronic and aggressive" has sort of been my main thing for a while now.

i haven't read anything, so forgive me for any unnecessary repetition.

electronic, aggressive, but usually quite silly: toecutter, shitmat

and venetian snares are kinda a staple. check out the µ-ziq (mu-ziq) label for some cool stuff (not all of it's aggresive electronic stuff though. mostly pretty good regardless). hvratski, who is signed to µ-ziq, apparently produced some pretty abrasive dnb-esque stuff in his early days. haven't heard any of it though.

if you can find some of amon tobin's earlier stuff, that can get a bit edgy sometimes. pretty fast, and on a sort of jazzy tip. even better, stuff that he recorded as cujo, which is much more drum and bass focussed.

atari teenage riot, but you mentioned them at the start.

jungle / ragga / dancehall influenced stuff: bong-ra, kid 606, cex

drum and bass-ish: evol intent make some of my favourite songs right now. killer. also spor, noisia, gein, dj hidden. labels to check out for heavy dnb: barcode, renegade hardware, freak recordings, outbreak and maybe metalheadz and moving shadow.

and if you're looking for audio without getting into p2p stuff:

grindthieves international (http://www.grindthieves.com/) have a bunch of excellent breakcore / heavy jungle / dnb mixes in their "exclusive audio" section. good for listening to and finding new artists.

dnb-sets (http://dnb-sets.de) is a drum and bass mixes search engine, cataloguing loads of stuff from all over dnb -- live sets, promo mixes, amateur stuff, and so on. just punch in and artist name (you can also set mix / max bitrates and times).

the mixing bowl (http://themixingbowl.org/) is a bittorrent tracker for mixes and live sets (hip-hop and various electronic music mostly). i only just found this place last week, but it seems ok for live sets etc. there's a bbc radio 1 'breezeblock' show up there with evol intent, and noisia and spor sets on it. radulous.

never seen a bittorrent tracker that installs spyware, but caveat emptor or whatever.

local stuff you probably won't know, but then maybe you will since you're just over in nu zillund:

artists: paul blackout, epsilon, xylocaine, patricider. also fraughman, toecutter, rank sinatra, and the rest of the 'system corrupt' crew.

labels: killing sheep, hardline, and the now defunct bloody fist. noisexchange (http://www.noisexchange.com/) is a melbourne record shop (run by the dude who used to run the bloody fist record store and label in newcastle). they sell a lot of breakcore, glitch, noise, loud dnb, and other forms of fairly painful music.

anyway. i should be studying, and that's all i've got at the moment. hope it helps.

NINJA EDIT! to fix up some bbcode.

DOUBLE EDIT! listen to nonprophet's "sound murderation" mix (http://www.grindthieves.com/tunes/nonprophet_-_sound_murderation_-_mixset2005_-_192kbps.mp3) on grindthieves NOW. i am. it's awesome. tracklist here (http://www.grindthieves.com/tunes/nonprophetmix.txt).

You mentioned Atari Teenage Riot so I'm guessing it's a pretty safe bet you've heard Panic DHH? That's probably my most relevant suggestion on the offchance you haven't.

Actually I've only seen those guys live, not given the records much of a listen at all*, but if they're anything like as good on CD as in person it's worth a shot.

Soman's album Mask from this year is a must.

C-Drone Defect are pretty aggressive if you don't find the whole EBM thing too cheesy. Also, their remix of Unter Null's 'Sick Fuck' from the SF EP is absolutely outstanding, worth checking out even if you don't like their own (rather more formulaic) recordings. The latest Tactical Sekt CD (Syncope) is also awesome, as is the Tac Sekt remix of 'Pax Psychosis' by Grendel.

Terrorfakt and Empusae do some pretty good beat-driven 'powernoise' (I am not good with genres it's like OONTZ OONTZ SCARY DISTORTION (film sample) thudda thudda OONTZ OONTZ) which certainly sounds aggressive to my ears.

You still not doing the whole downloading thing? I can upload any CDs mentioned/similar stuff to the Sendspace thread if ya like.

*Heard a couple of tracks before the gig but seeing PDHH in a small underground bar the size of yer average basement blew my mind so hard I pretty much never had the urge to listen to 'em on record, 'cos it couldn't possibly be that awesome.

edit: f'k it, I'll upload Soman anyway.

Panic DHH are on DHR right? I know the name but not the band. I shall investigate.
Thanks again.

Yeah that's cool, no one ever uses the uploady bit of the internet here except me so I'll get a few of 'em done tomorrow.

They are indeed on DHR, one of their members is Alec Empire's guitarist or something. Absolutely tore the place up live, the singer was swinging on pipes on the ceiling screaming into people in the 5th row's faces by 10 seconds into the first song. Awesome. Couldn't hear shit for a week mind.

edit: also since you know/like Terrorfakt I feel obliged to mention Tarmvred since I was recommended 'em at the same time and I can't see anyone liking one and not the other. Similar shit, still awesome.

Hmm, let me think here...there are of course, the coldwave peoples.  Chemlab and the like.  I'd say get 16 Volt's new album Full Black Habit.  It's pretty durned aggressive.  After that, Christ Analogue's Everyday is Distortion and The Bitcrusher Remixes are also very good.

Oh, and the earlier I, Parasite albums Horseslayer and Turin are right up this alley; and his latest, On This Cold Floor is aggressive in parts, unbelieveably heartbreaking in others.

What else can I throw out in good faith?  The new Noise Process disc, Endif's Meta, Acumen Nation, Cyanotic, Stromkern...there's more, I'm sure, but I'm blanking.  I'll post more later.

I hate to needlessly commit thread necromancy, but this thread has lead me to discover the Epoxies. I am thankful for this.

So in return I'll recommend Dead Inside the Chrysalis. I get the feeling that they're not really what this thread has in mind, but I think they're pretty rad.
