Title: Bluegrass.
Post by: Lutharion on 03 Oct 2005, 22:26
I was talking with my father the other day when he popped in this new CD that was really awesome. It was young people doing Bluegrass and it kicks ass. Nickle Creek. Look into it. They also at times depending on the song stray slightly away from usual bluegrass format. They are fantastic. As far as I hear many of the older bluegrass musicians see them as someone to carry on their art. They do a Bob Dylan cover on their 3rd CD. Not sure about any other great covers. I need to do research.

Yeah check out Nickle Creek.

Bluegrass is more thumbs up than I  have thumbs to . . . up.  Everyone should own a copy of Dolly Parton's The Grass is Blue.  Just swallow your pride and buy it, dammit!

I saw a pair of CD's called "Pickin' on Coldplay" and "Pickin' on Modest Mouse" while I was in the states - Bluegrass tributes FTW.

I heard a bluegrass version of Crazy Train once. With the guitar solo done on banjo. KICKASS.

If you want Bluegrass covers, try Hayseed Dixie. They started out as an AC/DC cover band, but then diversified out to other covers and original songs.

Plus, I heard an interview with them on the radio and they slagged off Coldplay.

"They that band that has that song 'bout how everythin's yellow? I never got that. Not enough sex, booze and dealin' wid the devil for my tastes..."

I heard Hayseed do "Fat Bottomed Girls" by Queen if I am not mistaken. That's... different.

I love it for the fiddles, but I could do without vocals in most of it.  Of course, that's the way I feel about a lot of music.

THERE IS A DISTURBING DEFICIT OF FIDDLES. WTF.

Bluegrass is pretty kickass sometimes. I really like what I've heard of the Amazing Rythm Aces. Awesome guitarwork.

I...think they're bluegrass...:P

On a similar note, I've forgotten who it was but what I heard of Dub Side of The Moon (A dub cover of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon) was awesome.

It's by the Easy Star Allstars. Also, that album lines up to the Wizard of Oz even better than the original. It is pretty cool. Try it! (http://www.easystar.com/duboz.html)

Also, the Tin Hat Trio have some pretty excellent bluegrass elements worked into their absolutely wonderful music. Check out this miniature masterpeice: Tin Hat Trio - Scrap (http://s26.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3NNL8SIHX1WPB0KSG9DX1CE3J5)

Having grown up listening to my dad play bluegrass cds I love having them in the backround and love alot of the stuff. But... I think it's just the mental barrier of my dad loving it but I realy could never bring myself to buy any of it.

Most of my musical tastes are from what my father has listened to while I grew up. He has all the CDs so why should I buy them? heh

Bluegrass is totally better than you; basically, from age 3 to 14 my parents took me to festivals and whatnot like, every year. That may have an influence; either way, I have a bunch of bootlegs and shit from too many people.

i have lived in middle tennessee my whole life and my dad has been in several bluegrass bands... i've been around bluegrass all my life. the best recordings out of the hundreds i've heard are live shows and collaborations when people assemble an "all star" team of sorts. here are the best in the business right now (check out "bela fleck - tales from the acoustic planet, vol. 2: the bluegrass sessions")

GUITAR - tony rice   or   bryan sutton   or   david grier
DOBRO - jerry douglas   or    rob ikes
BANJO - bela fleck
FIDDLE - allison kraus (she's just my favourite)
MANDOLIN - sam bush    or   chris thile
BASS - barry bales (plays in a.k./union station) - he is solid

i have to give chris thile (nickel creek) credit for being the virtuoso he is. kid has unmatched skills and he's 24-ish. and nickel creek has been playing together since the members were around 5 years old... single digit ages. it's ridiculous.
