Title: good folk
Post by: Mikendher on 07 Oct 2005, 15:00
I'm looking for good folk music, if anyone has suggestions? I like quiet acoustic stuff (M. Ward, Elliott Smith, etc). Also voice is very important. For instance, Devendra Banhart is very good but I don't really like his voice so much.

Leo Kottke is awesome.  his voice is something of an acquired taste, though.  but his instrumental stuff is ace.  check out the song "Red and White".

You cannot go wrong with Nick Drake.  It sounds like you'd like Pink Moon the most.

I used to be a little wary of his more instrumental stuff, but for the past week or so I've been listening to Five Leaves Left obsessively.

I honestly thought that Nick Drake was black for awhile.

Also, if you are into Devendra, than Animal Collective or Joanna Newsome would be solid bets.

Definitely Nick Drake. And for my two cents, I'd suggest Leonard Cohen. Some people think his voice takes acclimating to, but I think it's fabulous. And with lyrics that good, who cares?  John Prine's also good for a more political spin.
