Title: The Black Keys
Post by: AwesomeAaron on 08 Oct 2005, 16:54
I've been addicted to this band lately. My Friend Ross gave me Rubber Factory and it just kicks sooooo much ass. It's like if the White Stripes were western. They've got simple (yet awesome) guitar lixx and aggressive druming which I almost always love. Aggressive druming is one o the reasons why I like DMST & White Stripes & The Black Keys. I want bands to fucking destroy their Drums by the end of their recording session. And if they're using a synthesizer destroy the Keyboard just to show how fucking hardcore you are. Listen to "10 A.M. Automatic" "Till I Get My Way" & "Stack Shot Billy".

Fuck that.  Don't compare the Black Keys to the White Stripes.

The White Stripes SUCK compared to the Black Keys.

The Black Keys are more like Hendrix if anything.  They can write one slick blues rock riff, and they just ooze sex.

You clearly need to get their other two albums.  Thickfreakness is hot shit.

I have no money. I spent it on a signed poster from Arcade Fire. and a bigass Mogwai Poster for Rock Action. I was more saying that they have the minimalist approach of the White Stripes than saying they're like them. They're not. They kick about Ten times more ass than the White Stripes. I like the fact that they recorded over not-quite-right commercials for Fried Chicken joints for Thickfreakness; That would be reason enough for them to be my favorite band if AF or An Am Set weren't around. As soon as I get some cash I get An Am Set's new album (Holy freaking crap, they had it at FYE wtf). I really have no cash right now. If I only had a fucking job I would own every cd I want.

The White Stripes use minimalism as a gimmick.  The Black Keys use minimalism because they record a lot of their stuff at home on beat up equipment (hence their "patented medium fidelity"...equal parts hot ass shit and broke ass shit).

Thickfreakness is the best Black Keys album. They are a much less popular version of the White Stripes, and much much better.

The White Stripes and the Black Keys are just in two seperate places as musicians.

The Black Keys draw from the old blues tradition while melding with White Blues wannabees like Canned Heat and shit to create something badass, while the White Stripes go more for a garage sound, for the most part.

Yeah, I just got my hands on Thickfreakness and The Big Come Up. That has to be the most rockin cover of "she said, she said" I have ever heard. It's hard to do a beatles cover and still be original.

The Keys are awesome.  Throwback, raunchy, thick blues.  Patrick Carney is insanely creative on the drums.

Jesus fucking christ WCT found the music forums!

And, in consensus with the OP, the black keys are beardy.

Well, the guitarist is, the drummer kinda looks like he could moonlight in Weezer in his spare time.
Anyone else think their most recent album was kinda overproduced? I miss the really rough sound on Thickfreakness.

Yeah, Attack and Release was a little overdone, but they originally wrote it for Ike Turner, apparently.  It was supposed to be collaborative.

But don't make fun of Patrick Carney's inability to grow facial hair.  He's a really really interesting drummer and very funny, too.  I was watching one of their DVDs and it had interviews with both guys.  This is what Patrick said about growing up in the same town as Dan:
"Dan and I didn't hang out too much.  He was more interested in going to parties and stuff, and I was more into wearing tin foil gloves at the mall and being antisocial."

haha i love Patrick Carney.

the drums in "Stack Shot Billy" still remain some of my favorites. plus, he is a skinny drummer with glasses and that is what i happen to be as well.

I'm a somewhat overweight drummer with glasses.  Hooray: I just realized, I'm a hybrid of John Bonham and Patrick Carney!  Alternately, I could be Pat Wilson, and that would be tragic.

And being John Bonham wouldn't be tragic? I'd rather not die of alcohol poisoning.

Well, I don't drink, so that would be a non-issue.

I've seen the tambourine thing on a DVD, and I thought it was an awesome idea.  I agree with you about the Attack & Release songs, they sound much better with just the two of them.

You guys should probably listen to Junior Kimbrough too.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lm06GowX3gU

And T Model Ford http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOGfbzmHVK4&feature=PlayList&p=6052030B3D1A0DFF&playnext=1&index=26

Fred McDowell http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54GNI2K3-ec

Black Keys are very much in the Delta Blues style like these guys, and are good stuff.
