Title: Wallace and Gromit
Post by: Stifled Dreams on 11 Oct 2005, 13:38: I haven't seen the new movie yet, but I have high expectations. I love those three other movies so much. I like it during the one where they are going to the moon and Wallace is just like, "GROMIT OMG WE FORGOT THE CRACKERS!" I don't know why, it is just so funny. And Gromit knits... he is a pretty cool dog.

Anyways, even if you think that these movies are childish and stupid (which you shouldn't!) you can't argue that they are well-animated. I experimented with claymation this summer, and it is really hard to make it not look extremely lame.

Although, I don't know if everyone else had it, but there was a short cartoon at the beginning featuring the penguins from Madagascar which damn near overshadowed Curse of the Wererabbit with guffaw-inducing jokes. Not to say Wallace and/or Gromit weren't funny, it's just that those penguins were really fucking funny. I just may see Madagascar now just for them.

I plan on seeing it a second, third, and possibly even fourth time in theatres. Well... okay maybe only a second time. I'm too poor to afford it.

Post by: Stifled Dreams on 14 Oct 2005, 18:30: I just saw it, and although the theater was overrun by loud (albeit somewhat cute) young children, it was fairly awesome. There were a couple of jokes that made me think, "rated G? Huh?" Like Jarne said, basically.

Good fun.

Post by: Valrus on 14 Oct 2005, 20:30: Agreed, there were a few pretty risqué jokes in there. I think it's safe to assume that they were done tastefully enough that they would go over most kids' heads though.

That aside, though, the movie was hilarious. I was skeptical about whether they'd be able to maintain the level of quality that was in the three shorts for the entire length of a feature film, but I think they actually surpassed it.

The technique of having a dog roll his eyes has never before been used to such comedic effect so many times in one movie.

Post by: Luke on 15 Oct 2005, 00:54: I don't get out to the theatre often, but I was with some friends recently, and we were going to see either this movie or Corpse Bride. We ended up seeing Corpse Bride, so I need to get back to the theatre ASAP to see Wallace & Gromit. I absolutely love those movies.

By some unbelievable coincidence, I witnessed that.
Me and my friend were going for our usual 'can't sleep, need exercise' walk at about 5am, and on the way back from the city-centre, we saw the smoke, followed the trail, and ended up watching the whole place go up in flames. It was pretty cool to see, really, it [was] a pretty big building.
I didn't find out it was the Aardman building until about three days later, however.

Post by: LeeZion on 18 Oct 2005, 19:54: Loved it. Loved it. Loved it. It kept the atmosphere of the three original shorts, and surpassed them. The story was great, and from a technical perspective it was absolutely brilliant. The Wrong Trousers is so entertaining that you don't even notice until the fourth or fifth viewing that there are only three characters in it. For example, the penguin cases the museum, but you don't see a single guard. The penguin is brought to the police station, but you don't see a single policeman. Still, everything is paced so rapidly, with a great chase scene at the end, that you don't even notice what's missing.
A Close Shave, meanwhile, adds a few new characters (loved the cyberdoggie!), those wacky sheep, and an even bigger chase scene. But for this film, Aardman animated not only a chase, but also huge crowd scenes. It was absolutely brilliant, and tons of fun.

I'm American. We had all three of the shorts on VHS back in the day, and I just saw the movie last weekend.

I absolutely loved all of those sly adult jokes ("May contain nuts") and how hectic it got near the end. Plus, it was nice catching the odd fingerprint in the models. Almost helps you to appreciate how much time went into the feature.
