Title: Good Mogwai album to start out with
Post by: coldcut on 12 Oct 2005, 02:23
So I've been staring at Marten's Mogwai poster for a good 200(?) strips and I figure it's high time I figure out what they sound like.  Generally I can figure out a decent starting point through Amazon and the like, but in this case I'm stumped.

Help me QCers, you're my only hope!

To be honest, it's all good, but I'd just get Young Team to startwith. It's a goddamn classic.

I started with Happy Songs for Happy People and that's what I ended with. Not because I don't completely love it, but because I have no money.

Rock Action, their 3rd studio album, is their most accessible, and a good starting point.

Although their best is probably Come On Die Young. It's their most difficult album, and requires a lot of patience, but it works so well as a whole.

Young Team has a few great tracks, but is horribly inconsistant. Happy Songs For Happy People is solid, if unspectacular.

Ok, I have an admission to make: I don't like "Like Herod." Can you guys tell me what justifies its being 11 minutes long? I will then use my superpower of letting other people influence my opinions to realize that I like that song after all. It's foolproof!

Come On Die Young was my introduction, and I love the band, so I assume that will work.  Though I can't really think of a bad introduction.

I'm having more or less the same problem. I downloaded 'Like Herod' because I heard it was one of their best, but quite frankly, it bored me.

It's probably one of their best once you've gotten into them and know what they're trying to do.

I say get rock action, realise they are awesome, then hurry out and buy everything else they've done. always seemed to me that happy songs for happy people gets kind of overlooked, noone ever seems to mention it...i think its marvelous.

then realise you love this type of music and go get some mono, silver mt.zion and fly pan am records.

My first one was also Rock Action, and I love it to pieces, but I think Come On, Die Young is a better album. Well, actually this is only true if you don't include Rock Action's song Take Me Somewhere Nice. That's one of the best Mogwai songs ever.

I got happy songs for happy people first, since it was the only one I could find...I like it alot but there's just other stuff I've wanted to buy more than more mogwai stuff...I'm sure I'll buy something else by them eventually...

Hello.

From my name you can probably guess my opinion on the Like Herod question. Its stunning and disturbing and raw.

I love my  Young Team cd, but my favorite mogwai cd so far is either Come On Die Young or Government Commisions. that being said they all kick ass

Can't stand Young Team. Come On Die Young would be the starting place for me. Maybe even Happy Songs For Happy People.
